  • Well you asked for a longer episode so this one should make good on that at nearly an hour long! In this episode I tackle to massive job of reconditioning all of the engine parts and getting them put back together in the way Honda intended. The first stage of this process removing all of the scale build up from the water jacket, I done this by using a central heating cleaner in a bath of hot water and it done the job nicely. The casings were also all striped back to bare alloy and refinished to better than OEM spec and all of the mechanical parts have been inspected, cleaned, machined or replaced as necessary and all of that added up to one fully rebuilt engine that's fit for another 40,000kms... hopefully.
    Enjoy.

Had one of these. Best motorcycle ever made imo. Have a newer one now but I would trade it for a good condition 98 99. It is hard to find one that hasn't been trashed or affordable. Had a guy selling a garage princess a year ago with less than a thousand miles on it! He wanted more than I could afford. Wish I could have bought it.

suggestion. for future restorations consider getting a wheelie bin/large swing top bin. those are cheap and sturdy and importantly are very deep. and of course arent round. so you can submerge large objects like an engine block completely in cleaning fluid. I've used a large bin to store my fish whenever I clean out my fish pond.

I remember these super little motorbikes when they were introduced back in the 80's.
I was asked by Honda UK to take all the new bike to Ireland...and what a lovely time that was.
People were so friendly... Ladies came out with tea and sandwiches...
The Police were doing circuit escorts with the new bikes... great memories..
And that 400, was as sweet as the Irish..
    Wonderful...
Thank you Ireland...will never forget it..
So please put the love and care, as can be seen into this great bike..

I must tell you that between my mechanics and yourself, these two channels I have been watching over the last 3 years and I have recently decided to pick up restoring. I'm going to start a job in powdercoating in january coming from no technical background whatsoever so I can do one or two activities from home I can build a business with. I would love to take a banged up ZX-12R one day and fix it up new much like you did this and the 916. You are very miticulis in the way you lay everything out so reassembly is a no brainer, you know right where everything goes, smart, I can see this isn`t your first rodeo. You have a lot of nice engine related rebuilding tools, like those vicegrips that hold the gears from turning, I have never seen those. I completely rebuilt my jet ski engine, the dealer had an exchange policy for the crank, you give them your old one and they give you a new one with the bearings all pressed into place for you, $840 later, everything else I did myself. I bought new stock pistons, the cilinders where great, I just rehoned them like you did, and when I got it all back together in 3 weeks, it fired right up, I ran some extra oil in the gas for the first tank because it was a two stroke, and it ran like a top for years. I had everything so spotless clean , like you there wasn`t even dust in that engine when I reassembled.

Love the long format! This bike is going to be a real treat when you're done with it. Very envious as I've always wanted a little NC30 - hopefully some day.

Fantastic showing as usual…..Am I the only one that feels that the putting away all ur tools in the right order is just as important?

Thank you glad you liked it. I think its like a ritual and it doesn't feel right moving on until the workshop is back in order.
