You are supposed to break them loose in a specific sequence and 1/3 at a time.
where does the breather hose connect to? I followed your advice to a T but now my engine vibrates. I have a feeling is that hose, mine had nothing attached at the other end of it.
That sounds like a misfire to me. I don't belive that misrouting the breather hose would cause that. I'd start by verifying the ignition on all cylinders
What length driveshaft did you use
This ended up needing a 53" driveshaft (face of 8.8 yoke flange to tip of trans output shaft)
You’re a legend, I’ll always come back to say this.
How does it handle and drive with the poly bushing kit you installed?
Sorry just saw this. This is still a work in progress, so hasn't seen the road yet. I've had good experiences with them in the past
How’d you purge your fuel system of air? Not sure if i missed it or not. Thanks
I usually crank for ~30s or so, let starter cool and repeat until the air is purged and it starts. If it's stubborn you can crack the lines until diesel flows and tighten them back up.
Yes!!! I did the same dang thing putting the ground on the alternator. I was demoralized when I turned the key and it didn’t start. Thanks for sharing!!
I’ve been enjoying ur 2.4l rebuild I’m rebuilding a exotec engine and can’t find what brand of pistons u used. Could u please txt me the brand u used. Thanks
I used DNJ pistons (p/n P336)
By my book the notch on the cam on the intake side should be at 10 o clock 2011 and newer
Yep that's correct
Nice 👍 thanks for sharing. I’ve been buying old unloved and abused Miata’s and fixing them and selling them. But recently the value of them has been skyrocketing so it’s hard to find good deals out there. ❤
Yeah it's crazy how much they go for, even in terrible shape
I just got that exact model been struggling in the parts getting department though
Nice! Some of the parts can definitely be hard to find
Just picked up an old f250 with a 7.3 idk. Was missing injectors when I got it. Have new ones in and ready to go. One hard line dosent want to line up with the injector. Any tips to getting it line up?
If you're still fighting it, I've always found that lostening up the clamp that holds them together gets them to line up. If it still won't, it may have gotten tweaked and need a slight bend
Has anyone any idea if this solves the problem? I would guess other type pistons with old style scrape ring would have my vote
On this car it did solve the oil consumption problem. I'm not a big fan of the new style oil ring, but I think the biggest thing is regular oil changes to prevent the build up that clogs them.
U shud have cleaned it well prior 2 reassembly.. it looks so shabby and dirty!
Yes, should have. But this one's never going to be a cream puff 😂

😅
Beautiful motorcycle; I own a 2000 Daytona 955i 🎉😊❤
I just blew up my engine on 11lbs of boost. Wonder how hard it would be to just pull the engine not the transmission too ? I don't have room for all that in my work space. I'm a retired aircraft mechanic, and a certified GM mechanic also , and you would be about the only one I'd let repair my engines with your attention to detail , I'm the sane way. Keep up the good work, not like the hacks out there, and I worked with many of them.
Thank you! You can definitely pull motor only on these, aligning the trans and motor back up is just tricky with how tight it is. Also need a very long extension to get to the top bellhousing bolts
Always double check machine shop work. Can't even tell you how many times they screwed my job up with piss poor machining . Last one was a gave them a crankshaft to grind, I get it back in the vehicle, to find there's a snapped off flywheel bolt in the crank. I had all the bolts, so it must of been someone else's crank, not mine. One time I had my Harley jugs bored, they way over bored them, then I had to buy more pistons, and go to a larger bore. Once a had a crank returned to me so tight , I don't know what they did to it.
Absolutely! I've had to get work redone even with machine shops I generally trust.
It’s like listening to Jeffrey Dahmer teaching me how to tear down a miata motor 😂
I don't know how to take that 😂
@@NotEnoughProjects 😂 ❤
thank you for this video. instructions were so clear and helpful omg
Glad to hear it helped!
I own a 1998 ST1100 with ABS and this year in June with my wife we rode around France and Spain. The bike was faultless and very comfortable except a bit heavy when fully loaded and on those twisty mountain roads.
Been planning this swap for my 85 2M6 and this video was really helpful.
Glad to hear it, have fun with the swap!
i wouldve 100% electric converted it
Would be an interesting project!
This video saved me from many mistakes. Question. I removed the cam adjusters before sending the head out to be redone ( I did not make their location in reference to the cam itself). The cam end where the cam adjusters install on to are not keys so I have no idea how they should be. Any suggestions on how to install the cam adjusters back on the cam? Thank you.
Sorry I am just seeing this. I belive the position of the adjusters does not actually matter functionally. To get the marks lined up, you will want to use the crank and cam locking tools
Wow, I cant believe the size of that air cleaner! Sweet ride for $200!
The engineering on this machine is 🤯
I had an 84 Goldwing I had to rework completely... then rode it for years. I would love to get my hands on a ST like yours. You did a nice job diagnosing the problems. Fun fact...I met a man and wife on The Blue Ridge Parkway riding an ST, and he was a regional president of The Goldwing Road Riders Association.
Very cool! Thanks
Watching you bring this bike back step by step was very satisfying to watch. Keep up the good work.
YOU CALL THAT GOOD WORK ,,,?????? i am getting nervous just by watching this guys strugle
Great day job, I enjoyed every minute. What is that windows app you are using?
Thank you! Glad to hear it. That is VIDA, volvo's dealer software. You can get a copy here volvodiag.com/
Thanks
Sounded like an ole Ducati twin there till the 4th carb was fixed
😂 It did
Don't worry, you're not alone. Man, I'm in Wiring Harness for our 2011 2.4 ecotech engine chevrolet equinox. I don't know what this car have no matter what it takes i need this car back on roadt .i did overhaul by myself in a 3rd story bldg part. And putting it back on down to our parking spot by my self without any engine lifter. You're video is my reviewer at this time. Tomorrow mor ing hopefully I can crank Trough the starte. Thanks for the video
Good luck! Hope it goes smooth
@NotEnoughProjects strick one redo i expect that anyways short of information there is a "good car mechanic that says he can fix this an easy going person I trusted but damn dude I thought German mechanic got higher quality anyways when our car returned it already been like peace by peace.
Put oil in the reservoir. At all times 26:45
Nice work! Can’t beat the price 🦅😢
Thanks! That's for sure
VTEC just like Honda cars, at high rpm, valve lift is huge.
Would be cool if they put it on a bike!
You could’ve offered more under the circumstances 😢
They didn't need/want the money. Just wanted it gone. It will be ridden and cared for, which I hope would have made the previous owner happy
are you from oregon?
Treasure Valley Idaho
@@NotEnoughProjects i saw the fresh squeezed box made me wonder lol
Good eye 🙂
Some general tips: • Remove all the old gas, add Berryman's and top it off with new gas • Flush the brake fluid, flush the radiator fluid, change oil and oil filter • Pull the plugs, check condition, squirt some Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders, turn over the engine a few times • Compression check, lube throttle cable, lube swingarm, lube clutch and brake pivots • Do not use grease on the carb seals, use silicone grease. Pure silicone spray will help soften them up • Check alternator output • Tire pressure check. How old are those tires?
All good practices!
Absolute bargain. I had a 1992 that I paid $2000 for. I rode it from Texas to Colorado and back and all around the Texas Hill Country. I raced a 700 HP Mustang from a dead stop and smoked him at 50 yards and let off at that point. It wheelied which surprised me, only time I ever got on it that hard. You know the ST is called Pan European over seas. Phenomenal bike.
Lucky man love it😊
Looking good and it drives😊
Yep, getting there!
You are smart
Thanks man!
It looks not an easy motor to work on
Once you peel the layers away it's not too bad!
Aw man I see this bike like its an equal to the Ducati 748/916/996 design, those fairings cover 95% of the bike, a true "fully faired" bike. Nice repairs! and SWEET BIKE! SUBBED!
Thank you! They are very cool bikes
You just need to fill this bike up with 98 octane and then RUN IT. And its in awesome shape, and instead of trying to move it while not being on it with the bodymass you have it will be much better to just get on it and that way have control better of the weight. If you run it with the good stuff it will be clear within a half hour like it was new. But you should give ut the beans. The American donkey fuel with so less octane is crap for these bikes. Anyway, good effort.
For the idle jets, you take some strains from an electric cable and get one strain of copper inside it and then you scrub the jet up and down on that copper removing old gunk you can't see. It's like you have put all the effort in but all these small things... You will learn. And please don't poke everything with the screwdriver. I almost get triggered seeing the screwdriver on the carb pistons, and on the brake master, wow, that was hard to watch.
My comments may seem salty I'm sorry about that, you should reward us with a 2 minute clip were you pulled through a couple gears or three at WOT.
Great find!!!!
No worries! Thanks for watching and the suggestions
16:15 you all can thank me later.
200 usd. The family robbed the old man and sold his baby for this measly amount and i cant blame you for scooping it up, but that old man im sure is turning in his grave. Guess the family was wealthy and this is worth 10 times the amount.
No doubt! They didn't need the money, just wanted it gone
BG makes great oil & fuel treatment products.
Oh , I'll just got to some old peoples house , where someone just died ,.and give them a pissy 200 bucks for a nice motorbike, because iam a poor bastard with a house full of shit , and iam so kind. Fk you and your shit story. Your an asshole😂
Love to see these being saved,i have a 1998 one converted to the speed triple (no front plastics and motocross bars) such a underated and undervalued bike, not too mention extremley good fun to ride. only issue i have is the plastic tank & ethanol causing bubbles but they can be lined and painted.
Tons of fun! I've heard of people having issues with the tank, luckily this one seems to have held up
Nice video! I have the identical bike, same year, but with 134k miles. If you decide to keep it, do yourself a favor and add a voltmeter. The early ST's (91-95 I believe) have the oil-cooled 28A alternator that is known to fail at some point, the Achilles Heel of that bike. Mine is in the process of being converted to a 40A unit, but its a lot of work.
That's a great idea
