  • Last time we worked on this project, we finished up assembling the 360/5.9 magnum that will be going in this 1973 Dodge Dart. This time we will be going through a Torquflite A727 transmission and getting it ready to go behind the fresh motor. Let's tear it down and inspect the insides.

I rebuilt many of them over the years. I started working as a mechanic's helper in 61 at the age of 14. By the time I graduated from college in 1980. I was a fully licensed mechanic. The majority of my work was normal maintenance, but I still rebuilt my share of automatic transmissions and engines, more rarely a rear differential. If memory serves there were certain areas of the input and output shafts that were prone to wear, which meant the transmission would not work properly if it was excessive. We checked those areas with a micrometer to make sure they were in spec. That transmission looks very good, and if I had to guess would say it had very little mileage on it. If the fluid was changed at recommended intervals those transmissions could go over 300,000 miles before needing repair., unfortunately, few people followed the recommended service intervals. I took apart transmissions with over 100,000 miles that had never had the fluid and filter changed.
