QuasiMotard also did a video of adjusting the front and rear shocks on the Rebel 1100 DCT. He put a zip tie on the shock piston rod so that he could see how far down the shocks compressed. He said he is 170lbs and liked the shocks with a 7 click preload. I am about the same weight as you described and was compressing the shock 1/2 way just sitting on the bike. Driving on normal roads bottomed out at least once because the zip tie was all the way at the bottom on the bump stop. I added 7 clicks to the preload (actually backed off to 0 and then counted up to 10 clicks) and then road around again with the zip ties on and this time when I rolled into the garage they were sitting about 1CM above the bump stop. I did not go looking for speed bumps or potholes, just my normal driving. So a setting of 10 clicks on the rears seems to be a good place to start to prevent bottoming out for a around 200lbs person and according to QuasiMotard 7 total clicks was good for him at around 170lbs. More weight on the back, add a click. Want it softer, take a couple away. Adding a passenger and you probably want to add more than a few clicks of preload. 18 clicks is the max.
Yeah I put a zip tie on my front forks on my track bike to see how far my travel is and adjust from there. But if you ride and don’t wash it all the time you can see how far the travel is also from the dirt ring.
@@pmh1nic I’m not a suspension expert . But in my opinion that means it’s too stiff and I would reduce preload . Assuming you are not bottoming out the spring . these suspension are budget but having the right springs for your weight can make a huge difference.
Wait when you are adding preload to the front. Do you turn clockwise as well? or it's counter clock wise.. lol.. sorry if this question is really dumb.

Watch out with the assumption that preload does anything for your ride to be firmer or stiffer. Preload ist just for spring travel adjustment. There are many good videos on preload adjustment using a measuring tape. You should know your total suspension travel, your static sag (when just the bike is pusing on the suspension) and your sag with you and your luggage. Usually your suspension should be 1/4 to 1/3 compressed so that is can react to both compression and decompression. Cranking up your preload to stiffen your ride will eventually leave no negative spring travel and lead to a dangerous ride. But as you said, you should adjust preload depending on your weight, luggage and/or passenger. It might be that you are to heavy for the standard suspension, the way to go is a stiffer spring or a suspension that also lets you adjust rebound and dampening. The Rebel does not have this on the stock suspension and therefore you cannot actually make your ride stiffer or softer.
It’s a cheep one they don’t make it anymore. I have a new set I’m getting tomorrow. Just standard front fork and rear spool most should work with a little creativity

Lame ! I’d tell the dealer you want one . You can probably figure something out that will work but the tool makes it a lot easier and won’t damage it either. They might have one at the dealer they could give or sell you in the mean time ?
thanks.. super clear explanation.. i adjusted my 300 with my hand.. i’m glad they gave us the tool

I'm 160 pounds and getting bounced off the seat when I hit anything more than a moderate bump. Should increasing or decreasing preload?
