The Song of Wandering Aengus BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS I went out to the hazel wood, Because a fire was in my head, And cut and peeled a hazel wand, And hooked a berry to a thread; And when white moths were on the wing, And moth-like stars were flickering out, I dropped the berry in a stream And caught a little silver trout. When I had laid it on the floor I went to blow the fire a-flame, But something rustled on the floor, And someone called me by my name: It had become a glimmering girl With apple blossom in her hair Who called me by my name and ran And faded through the brightening air. Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done, The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun.
...this is how it ends. Poetic, inevitable and final. I was lucky to come back, after I heard my name called out, followed by a fade-to-grey. There is a lady whom I have and will always meet, from life to life. She has always forgiven me.

Gambon manages to create the perfect combination of lilting voice, and earthy voice, natural and then trancelike inflection. The sound track interferes.
Such great poetry does not need loudly intrusive music, and certainly not a rendering in which the metre of the verse is held up between lines. A shame to misuse a great actor.
The Song of Wandering Aengus
BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS
I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.
Aengus was the Irish god of love
The words of a master, read by a master. Beautiful.
Simply beautiful. A perfect combination of voice, words and images
One of the most beautiful poems ever. And what a perfect rendering!

Is my tear not but a contradiction, to those who claim no wonder hides within our cardinal design?
Thank you for this,
Great rendering of Yeats poem.
Michael Mecava Great rendering of Yeats’s great poem.
How magical
Wow, how lovely.
Wow. Just wow. Would love to hear Yeats' "The Withering of the Boughs" read by him.
That was magical.
I have also heard this sang by Christy Moore. Beautiful❤
Damn, my son! Beautifully read! This was an invocation of a poetry spell!

No, I think the music/video complements it beautifully.
I don't like the sounds as much but I like the music with it.

Devastating oh wow
La Belleza existe, no nos conformemos con menos, no caigamos en lugares comunes y estulticias.
Beauty exists. Let us not be satisfied with less. Let's not fall into common and ignorant places.

Kiki Perry indeed it does
Agreed, the Voice does it all in this rendition, music is an unnecessary distraction."Less is more"
Genius is a word attributed to all kinds of mediocrity nowadays. Listen to the words of WB Yeats and understand what genius really is.
Anyone know what the soundtrack is?
Doctor Who recites this in The Leftovers. That scene sent shivers down my spine.
Beautifully read by a dubliner.
franco sixtynine Yes, that’s as it may be, but he doesn’t sound like a Dubliner.
I was about to say the truth. But the truth came first...... There is no Irish voice in him....
And a Cabra man at that. ❤
