I don’t agree with many points with this video. One. you’re comparing the Sony speakers with studio monitors. The Sony speakers have a character to them which is favored by many.. 2. Just because a speaker cannot play loud doesn’t mean that it doesn’t sound good. Not everyone listens to music at 85Db plus. 3. Have you actually listen to the Sony speakers with your stereo? If you already own them, they should be fine for rear duty, especially if your AVR has PEQ and can control the brightness. If you don't own them, I wouldn't buy them.
I imagine that you are familiar with Gr Research and their take on modifying the Sony's. Danny does include a lot of graphs of b-4 and after modification. I just looked at his website and noticed the modkit now costs a whopping $480.00 plus tax, shipping, and the fact that it's up to the customer to build them. I want to talk to at least one person who has done this mod. Hell, it's even more than the mods to ATC's where the expenditure may actually benefit a nearly five grand pair of speakers with insane dynamics and clarity.
I installed the GR Research crossovers in the Klipsch RP-600m (original ones). To my ears, in my room, it sounds more balanced. It is definitely much lower in efficiency with the new crossover. FWIW, the CSS 1TD-X speaker (kit) absolutely crushes the modded Klipsch. I believe they even beat my Magnepan 1.7i, but I'm still testing that out. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't spend $500 to upgrade a $200 speaker. The money I spent on the Klipsch mods would have been better spent on another pair of CSS, the 2TD-X for my main listening room.
I did the GR Research mod on the Neumi BS5s and CS5. Very happy with the results, and for me the fact that I got to work on them myself was actually a selling point (I enjoy tinkering with electronics as much as listening to them 😂). I have them set up in my living room home theater and they have excellent clarity and detail. The before vs after was startling, absolutely obvious in the first 10 seconds of listening. They're still not as exciting as, say, the full size vintage Advent speakers my dad has and won't blow you away with volume, but I don't really rock out hard anymore, and prefer listening at moderate volumes which these can do very well (with a properly integrated sub or two, of course, for that low end extension).
I bought CS5 3 years ago when it was $73, then sold them. They sound balanced and neutral than BS22 at mid-range, not that "shouty", but, as you said, CS5 definitely lack of bass. Both BS22 and CS5 are good at $100 range. But neither of them can beat decent $200 speakers
I agree I got the sc5s and the STRDH190 for 200 bucks with 100 ft of speaker cable......black Friday deal. Then Santa brought me an RT85. 6 months later I now have an R-N1000A a PB2000 and the new SVS Evolution Bookshelfs. I whole new ball game.

He said his favorite speakers ever, I believe. Just because the Lions are my favorite team doesn't mean I think they are the best team ever. Just trying to keep things in perspective.

I agree on the Adams (T5, T7, T8 series) if you feed them with a proper balanced dac. On the other hand, making fun of other youtubers isn't the way to go.
Funny I thought he was going to do the Danny Richie Crossover, over haul. If you have issues 😂 with the CS units see his overhaul. Danny obviously runs a Spectral analysis, points out the Box needs No Rez and a good crossover. He has the Super Tweeter become the tweeter the original tweeter he turns it into Mid Range, and gets rid of all the cheesie parts. While he doesn't like the woofer frame as it's stamped steel. He then gets rid of Sand cast resistors, then offs the iron core inductors, gets rid of crappy Steel in the signal path, and the crappy PVC cableing. Yes, the upgrade is spendy. But you honor what you have. And while you can get a pair of Warfdales and regardless of a better Woofer you will still if you want to upgrade them to a better sound quality you are going to get rid of their crossover cheese. So, there is that.
And I didn't think specifically Randy was trying to necessarily say that the upgrade would manditorily make the speakers exactly equal. But in comparison the may get close and certainly better than their present state. And the end result or results really depend on your ears and budget. When you have the basic knowledge of spectral analysis and the fundamental design you can make an educated assumption and either proceed or look elsewhere. No one has the same ears or hearing mechanics let alone personal preference. Speakers in combination with good or bad amplification not to mention room acoustic all play their parts on what you like or will accept.
The best deals in hifi are always the used deals. That said I saved up and paid a princely £700 for a pair of brand new Revel M105. £1800 speakers. Many speakers are like fashion, and prices drop very quickly once they are not the new thing any more. This bodes very well for us users.
I have owned the Sonys (found them for $35 at Goodwill) and now own the Lintons. I don’t have measuring equipment, but there is no way in hell that the Sonys would ever be as good as the Lintons. Thanks for exposing the truth here SA.
In Europe, Thomann sells the T5V for less than € 300 a pair and the T8V for less than € 500 a pair. The T8V goes straight to 45 HZ and -6 db dip is about 30 HZ.
It’s funny how polarizing these Sony speakers are. I blame Sony for putting an overpriced MSRP then putting them on sale for 50-60% off MSRP every other week. About 6 years ago I was shopping for a soundbar for movies in my living room. I have a modest stereo system in a spare room. These Sony’s were on sale for a ridiculous price, so I opted for them instead of a soundbar. I bought the tower version of these, the center channel, subwoofer, and a the respectable STR-DN1060 receiver for $800. Basically the entire 3.1 speaker system was $300. I love that the towers are front ported as my wife has a neurotic compulsion to place all furnishings directly against a wall. Anyway, I’ve set the crossover point to 90hz and don’t generally listen at high volumes. I’ve managed to convince my wife to keep the speakers about 8” from the wall. And the speakers are broken in. Yes, speakers do need to break in. The rubber or polyurethane in drivers can be stiff from factory and do benefit from 20-30 hours of break in. Electronics DO NOT need a break in period. Anyway, after setting them up to play with their strengths, they sound decent for the price. It’s just funny that people act like these are either total trash or the best speaker Evaah! When in reality they are just a good budget or entry level HOME THEATER (I.E. designed to work with EQ and a subwoofer) speaker if you get them on sale. They are fairly dynamic with good separation and low distortion at low to moderate volumes. A side note, the super tweeter is admittedly probably just a marketing gimmick and part of Sony’s “HiRes” sales pitch. But I have wondered if the 20khz and above sound waves somehow affect the audible hi frequency sound waves in some way? Perhaps they have a phase interaction with the audible high frequencies that wouldn’t measurable on a Klippel near field scanner, idk.
Probably the biggest shortcoming of that Sony speaker is the cheap light cabinet. Anyone who has these should add a dowel brace between the side panels.

Why so negative personally towards Randy. You could have said the same thing without attacking him. Shame!!! Also I own these speakers, they are very good for the price, better then almost anything for less then $200 a pair. Easy fixs for the treble, don't tow in and turn down the treble by 2db. Bass is reinforced by moving closing to a wall, about 10-12 inches and turn up the bass a couple db. They will hit hard! Also 85 db is plenty loud enough for a small to medium sized room. Who really listens to music much louder, you can cause hearing damage plus piss off neighbors. You, sir, are completely wrong, do better!

I did buy a pair of the Sonys I have many large Klipsch HERITAGE line including Cornwalls / LaScallas. So I wasn’t expecting much from these little Sonys. I was somewhat impressed and not a hater on bookshelf speakers. Many nice ones out there. Personally I would leave them alone. The Sonys or any bookshelf speaker will never overcome physics. IMHO.
Right. In the grand scheme, all bookshelves suck. I'll take a 15" 3-way, or really any good true full range speaker that can pull some real power. The only way to make a bookshelf sound proper is buy a sub to reinforce them. Having said that, the highest quality bookshelves I have seriously listened to were Elac DBR62 that I bought my daughter. Really nice speakers, quality drivers, sounded great, but still lacking. With a sub they are exceptional for use in a smaller room. But when it's all said and done, in my eyes, bookshelves are for surrounds. Floorstanders are the way to go.
But for some applications and kids rooms , a nice bookshelf will at least help pass down our passion to the next generation and get them away from the junky overpriced Bluetooth “speakers”.
Bro, you have a lot of hate. I get it,use an Up an coming reviewer for clickbait. Why bring hate to the table, Do your reviews and let people want to subscribe to you because of your style.
Why would I give any credibility to a guy who's got his (weird looking) speakers hanging on the wall in a completely senseless configuration? Oh wait, tell me there are two more hanging from the other walls so you can have "Surround Sound"!
Honestly, these reviewers should be subject to critique. They have a million financial conflicts of interest and make a lot of money selling products to the audience. I have no strong opinion on cheap audioman but in general there is way too much deference to celebrity creators in this hobby.
Why are audio nerds always so angry? When I walk into a high end audio store they're always spitting in my face about how much I don't know about audio, and now I turn to youtube and get the same treatment. It's just a pair of speakers in a very affordable price range, of course no matter what you do to it, it won't be perfect. Installing an upgrade to an inexpensive speaker may be the spark of creativity someone wants or needs to get deeper into audio, or design their own systems. Yes people have "untrained ears", but who cares when people are trying to enjoy their lives rather than trying to put other people down about their own subjective opinions about things.
When those "subjective" opinions are based on making money through links to buy those speakers, links to the other products they are schilling, someone needs to let people know they aren't just "opinions". If CheapAudioMan can make a buck selling the worst speakers available, he will do it.
@@scientificaudiophile I completely agree.Randy is 100% getting kick-backs.. This is precisely what troubles me about these influencers - they lack honesty with their audience.
I would only mod if the mod kit was $50. Most people would spend $450 on a new speaker.

Try the "Revel m126 Be speakers" they are about as good as it gets for bookshelf.

My infinite rating system now makes best of videos obsolete.
He then gets rid of Sand cast resistors, then offs the iron core inductors, gets rid of crappy
Steel in the signal path, and the crappy PVC cableing.
You're absolutely correct here, thank you!

For people with a decent sub, a bookshelve speaker doesn't need to have extended bass. In thia case the mids and highs matter most
Thus the problem with the Sony CS5 - highs.
