I like both channels just as in stereo. So I’ll try to be fair. Few of us can ever buy the “right speakers” especially early on. Simple. So upgrade or buy “better"? Not an easy decision. How much can Danny’s upgrade improve the originals and how much would an “equally good sounding” replacement cost? As we all know, there is the law of diminishing returns. It is possible Danny’s 145% upgrade could be better. It is also possible that it won’t. And it is probably definite that this will be on a case by case basis. That is why Danny’s specifics on how he does this for people is imminently fair, I think.

I still back up Danny and what he does. He rarely upgrades any new speakers . Most of the speakers that come in are vintage or neo vintage . Danny just shares and recommends what can be better for any speaker new or old and no force sales. Andrew only reviews new products that he gets from companies and doesn’t own most of them. Andrew doesn’t run any audio related company neither has any experience nor creative. Andrew just expresses what he feels about any product and is all subjective. Danny’s services have made many people happy. This video was just boring and won’t stain Danny. I collect vintage gear and yes they do need upgrades. Cheesy parts are cheesy parts and it MATTERS.

I think you're very limited in your thinking. They are clearly aiming for a wider audience than those who want a single mono-block. The amplifier can be a low-pass subwoofer amplifier. It can be a mono amp and with the trigger connection, both amplifiers will work in unison just crank the knob all the way. Snobby reviewers like you are the problem with audio. The rear panel clearly states the low frequency knob. You are completely biased. Chassis, not Chacciss! Pronounce your words properly. There are dip switches underneath that are self explanatory. Are you for real? Let's take your arrogant attitude and shove it where it belongs, the bin! You're opinions hold zero worth as you are completely biased.

There are also folks who purchase used (like me), and yes I consider myself an audio hobbyist, not an audiophile (unless we use Steve Guttenberg's definition). As an audio hobbyist some of the things I enjoy include; Listening to the systems I have. The thrill of the hunt for used (and some new) parts for my systems. Restoring parts of the systems. Improving my systems by mixing & matching components. (By way of example who would have thought that a pair of Carver Amazing Loud Speaker Platinums would pair and sound great with an NAD 2200 PE amplifier?) Building speakers. But back to the point, if you purchase used and pay fractions of retail for the speakers then upgrades can make sense. For example, I purchased a pair of Magnepan .7s for ~$400 and they sound pretty darn good. If I were to add the GR Research kit at $289 I would have a pair of speakers for ~$700 which will sound as good as or better than speakers in the multiples of, if not 10s of thousands of dollars. This assumes Danny's kit performs as advertised, which I have not heard any reviews where his kits made things worse. So I agree you probably shouldn't buy a new pair of speakers with the intent of upgrading them (there are probably exceptions to this broad statement). However there are reasons to purchase Danny's kits, including the reasons above. and perhaps you just have speakers for decades that you like and find aesthetically pleasing but want to make them better. An analogy might be the '68 Mustang you bought in the '70s, but all you could afford was a 6 banger with an automatic. Now you have money which you could buy a Tesla Model 3 with. Or for less you can put a 351 Windsor, four speed stick, beef up the suspension, a posi-traction rear end, a new paint job with a tricked out interior in the '68 Mustang. The Tesla will be faster, more comfortable, more reliable, safer and technologically superior in many ways. But you don't get the same feeling or the same head turns and nods of appreciation as you will from the Mustang. So I believe for some people Andrew is right and for others Danny is right. Also I think the reason Danny believes Andrew may be referring to GR Research is because most of Danny's RUclips presence is his upgrade videos, irrespective of what percentage of his sales it comprises. I suspect the reason for his video has a lot to do with many of his subscribers messaging him that Andrew was talking about him. If your followers believe someone is talking about you then the perception is there and perception is everything on RUclips.

No you dont have to use just Dannys parts . Danny makes profit of crossover redesigns work and parts mark up thats where 549usd comes from , no one knows his markups on parts. I think 549usd for pair of upgrade components on Debut 2.0 that was often sold for 350usd makes no sense. This clown will pick apart x speaker and then want to sell you his "magical upgrade kit" that effectively drives the cost to up to double what you just spent. Yeah, no thanks. He wanted to argue with me and actually insulted me telling me there is something wrong with my hearing just because I said I liked the sound of my Lumina II speakers as they were. Well guess what, clown - there IS something wrong with my hearing! I basically told him to go screw himself and moved along. I do not discount what he does - He seems pretty knowledgeable. @ilaion11 День назад

You're wrong too when you say like Andrew to buy something that you don't need to upgrade. Remember, the final price of speakers is usually 5 times what the producing company gets for them. This way, you also pay 5 times the p[rice of a better component when you can make it by yourself for 5 times less. Good crossovers tend to cost more then the drivers themselves sometimes, so if a speaker has good drivers but poor crossovers, it is worth the upgrade for sure! Now, I would never buy a pair of speakers when I can build them myself for 10% of what they would cost made by a company that buys the same drivers from Seas or Scan-Speak or whatever for less than I pay for them. Beryllium tweeters come as cheap as 250$, yet companies still brag about the fact that they use them in their builds like they are some kind of rarity, exclusivity you can only get a hold of if you pay them. Then they charge you 20K for that frickin pair of towers! Shame! For about 20k I can have an entire audio setup, 4 way, active crossover of the finest, including the best class D amps, crazy good DAC and preamp plus a streamer. I would not even bother with passive. This is what you should talk about, how can Danny brag so much about passive when active got so good, and I am not talking about cheap Chinese 3 way active amps. How is there still a business of passive when active is the future. Same goes for class D amplification.

I believe Andrew Robinson, when he says "their entire business model is selling upgrade kits", even though GR Research's business model isn't entirely about selling upgrade kits, is still referring to GR Research. Having watched plenty of Andrew's videos, he is not above pandering to his "anti-audiophile" base (the nickel, paper clip crossover is an example). And since most people who are aware of Danny's videos, are aware due to his upgrade videos, I believe Andrew is being a bit facetious by making his statement, "their entire business model is selling upgrade kits", but he is still referring to GR Research. Who else besides GR Research is selling any speaker upgrade kits, besides GR Research? Are there any other "boutique" businesses who's primary model is selling speaker upgrades? If there are others doing this, do they have anywhere near the RUclips presence as Danny?

    • @pandstar

Let me add, that I am not a Danny Richie fan boy, although I do respect his technical knowledge, nor do I own any of his products. However, I did help a friend of mine upgrade his Klipsch using one of Danny's kits, and the end result was pretty dramatic. The kits turned an unlistenable speaker (for me) into a pretty reasonable sounding speaker. Let me also add, that a friend and I used to upgrade speakers for friends and others for some extra pocket change. I have been inside more speakers than I can remember, and almost every speaker we worked on was improved by our work. Sometimes we just swapped out better parts in the crossovers, added bracing, added some mass loaded vinyl to the inside walls of the enclosure. Others we did a bit of redesign.

I agree, at least as far as in the US. There are other speaker kit companies, but not so many upgraders. I have felt there is a little snake oil in some of the GR Research pitches, but Danny DOES do videos where he basically says XYZ speaker is not worth even trying to fix. That does give the appearance of some credibility. Without double blind before and after listening tests, however, I remain skeptical. I think the best point some one else here made is that the upgrade kits might make sense for someone who has purchased used equipment, so doesn’t have the new $ investment someone else has.

My opinion that you are wrong on this one. I spent $600 on Klipsch RP600Ms and the upgrade for both speakers (including sound dampening material which is in all of his upgrade kits) was $200 (at the time). Noticeable upgrade. He redesigns the crossover to fix problems with the response as well as upgrade the parts. If I had instead sold them for even $400 and put the $200 that I saved not upgrading towards a new set of speakers, I'd wind up with another $600 pair of speakers with cheap parts and likely some sort of issue (at that price). You cherry picked an expensive upgrade kit and Danny himself frequently says in his videos that those don't really make sense. Also, do we really think that Andrew was talking about the other RUclips channel that puts out videos showing what's wrong with speakers and offers upgrade kits? Do we also think that Andrew knew the percentage of GR Research's business that comes from upgrade kits? I love Andrew's channel and content, but he was OBVIOUSLY talking about Danny. I like your channel and vids, but really disagree with you on this one.

Andrew is not 100% correct. You cherry picked data to make you point about upgrade expenses. Many other speakers that cost more, say 2,000 to 5,000 $ have upgrade kits at $500. So the upgrade may only be 10% of the speaker cost. I would not upgrade the Elac, but I may do so with other speakers. Your argument is disingenuous. "If you are serious about audio there is no room for a hobbyist." That's an opinion, not a fact and it comes off as really snobish. Andrew calls out GR Research by name in one of his videos so it's reasonable for Danny to believe that Andrew is pointing at GR Research as one of the small companies that has their business model as being speaker upgrades, yet correcting Andrew that in this case GR Research only does 10% of their business in speaker upgrades. So your aha gotcha moment is flawed. Additionally I take exception with your critique of Danny's video being too long and meandering. I thoroughly enjoy Danny's videos, he approached this one as a learning experience and was very gracious in inviting Andrew down to GR Research for a listening session. A real class act IMO. And an interesting video too. I am sorry that you found it boring and have a short attention span. While you do acknowledge parts matter in terms of reliability and consistency, it appears to me that you have an axe to grind with Danny. If your make the argument that iron core coils are ok for high end speakers crossovers for mid range and treble drivers for example, then I conclude that you don't know much. Also you repeated several of you statements multiple times so you aren't the the paradigm of brevity yourself. Not really very impressed with your video.

When people try to challenge Danny, ... it reminds me of a guy that collects sports cars or muscle cars, trying to argue with their mechanic. I think most audiophiles enjoy switching out different equipment to get the best performance out of their system. (speakers, amps, D.A.C, etc... even cables.) It is part of the hobby. Just because someone is serious about the performance of their system (serious about it is still a hobby. I think the S.A. is wrong here. He is just simply pointing out why upgrade kits only account for 10% of sales at G.R. The value is in building out their speaker kits not their upgrade kits. Speaker manufacturers are not using high quality parts in their crossovers. Maybe in $10k+ range you can get the kind of components that G.R. offers in their kits. The audiophiles that are willing to build out their own speakers are the ones that are serious,... not the people willing to throw $100k+ into a system. If you"re not willing to experiment (tinker) to strive for better performance,... then it is not a hobby..I.M.O.

Like when a real engineer, like Amir @ ASR rips Danny apart- is that what you’re referencing?

@scientificaudiophile he didn't rip him apart. When Amir overloaded a 3" wide ban driver??? Duh, it wasn't meant for that... Or when Amir tested that power cable w no current running thru it? Capacitors, resistors, and coils.. Amir would agree that an air core will perform better than an iron core coil inductor? Ferrous metals don't belong in the signal path b/c they hold a residual charge. Any engineer is not gonna disagree with that. I am actually an electrician, I understand capacitance and resistance in a circuit.

I like both of them, but Andrew dipped his foot in waters that he has no experience in. I haven’t watched him in a while and it seems like Andrew is pushing you to a conclusion as if trying to sell you the latest thing and trying to keep you at a certain price point in which he and Kristie agree with. Andrew is right about buying once, but you don't know if your choice is good or bad because even reviews aren't real. Most have no measurements, and there aren't any local stores for these brands, just online. Andrew doesn't do measurements, but Danny lives by them. If it costs more, he has an opinion without even testing the product. Danny does do more and has a ton more knowledge in speaker technology than Andrew will ever have. If I’m not mistaken Danny called out some reviewers and offered a challenge to reviewers to come to his home and maybe this is Andrew’s way because I think he was one of the reviewers Danny talked about and maybe Andrew never forgot him. If Andrew was being honest here he would take Danny up on this do a podcast, send Danny one of his speakers and have Danny do measurements before the upgrade treatment and then one after Danny’s treatment and then give an opinion. This won't happen because that would be too much like being fair. Danny has his own product line, and yes, he sells upgrades, but it is for some that can’t afford the speakers that Andrew speaks of, and this customer likes to tinker. Parts in almost any industry matter, as you explained. Andrew had an opinion where he wanted to with his subscriber base draw a conclusion, which is probably why I haven’t watched him in a while. I still like Andrew, and no I don't think you should upgrade cheap speakers with expensive parts, but even expensive speakers use cheap parts because they build to a price point. Danny gives you a choice, he doesn't make you choose.

Why is everybody making all these serious comments on this topic over here. SA is a satire / entertenment channel that exposes ridiculousness in the industry. I am looking forward to more 100% drunk reviews and Diane Bish ... ;)

Correct me if Im wrong but most of Danny’s videos are upgraded speakers.

Andrew is not correct because I can buy a pair of speakers _that I like_ while knowing that I can upgrade some x-over parts and make them sound even better. That is true for almost any speaker not costing a fortune. I'm not talking about creating a new x-over design but replacing cheaper parts with better ones of the same value. I've done that for 25 years, way before YT was ever created and never heard of Danny.
