  • Hi Guys!! I share this song (again) with you all, because singing 'The Future Ain't What It Used To Be' has 's become sort of ritualistic for me and how I like to celebrate and tribute Jim on this day each year.
When I heard of Jim's passing back in 2021, I had coincidentally been listening to (and singing) this song A LOT (ok, all the time). So, in that moment, this song felt like the perfect choice.
I believe music can save you from anything thrown your way, and that is one of the (many) reasons I now choose to revisit this song in April each year since.
I was pretty darn sad leading up to the first time I posted this and really alone. But this song made me feel... not alone (if that makes sense). I can’t thank Jim enough for this.
And that is why, each time I sing this tune, it sort of feels like a rebirth. (And, I kinda think Jim would get a kick out of that, right?)
Every time I sing this, I am instantaneously taken back to that place when I initially sang this song and while also appreciating the now and that I'm NOT in that place, 'no more.'
Jim, FOR THAT I THANK YOU.
If only I wrote that thank you e-mail to Jim I had already written in my head. But, I didn’t.
In hopes that my actions will speak louder than words, here is my annual ritual for you, Jim. I don’t think I could ever thank you enough.
    Lyrics:
I never knew so many bad times
    Could follow me so mercilessly
    It's almost surreal
All the pain that I feel
The future ain't what it used to be
It doesn't matter what they're thinking
It doesn't matter what they're thinking of me
    It's always so cold
I'm to young to be old
The future ain't what it used to be
Were there ever any stars in the sky
Did the sun ever shine so bright?
Do you have any dreams I could borrow
Just to get me through the lonely night?
Is there anything left to hold on to
When the rivers wash it all away?
Is there anyone left to hold on to
Is there anything left I can say?
Say a prayer for the falling angels
Stem the tide of the rising waters
Toll a bell for the broken hearted
Burn a torch for your sons and daughters
The endless night has got a hold of me
Dark days are pulling me forward
And all the tears are washing over me
    I'm crying, lost forever
In a future that ain't what it used to be
No more no more no more
    It's like a storm that's never ending
It's like a shadow on the land and the sea
    There's nothing so sad as
    A tomorrow gone bad
The future ain't what it used to be
Some days I feel so numb and empty
And those would be the good days for me
    Nothing gets to me now
    Unless I'm thinking of how
The future ain't what it used to be
Is there anything left to hold on to
When the rivers wash it all away?
Is there anyone left to hold on to
Is there anything left I can say?
Say a prayer for the falling angels
Stem the tide of the rising waters
Toll a bell for the broken hearted
Burn a torch for your sons and daughters
The endless night has got a hold of me
Dark days are pulling me forward
And all the tears are washing over me
    I'm crying, lost forever
In a future that ain't what it used to be
No more no more no more
The future just ain't what it used to be
It's never gonna be like it was
The future just ain't what it used to be
Wish it wouldn't come but it does
The future just ain't what it used to be
    Wish it wouldn't come
    Wish it wouldn't come
    I wish it wouldn't come
    but it always does

    Updated cover - updated comment!
Jim Steinman died exactly two years ago, and on that day we lost the grand architect of our “rock and roll dreams” - our “secret dreams” - the ones about wasted youth, and wolves with red roses, words being taken right out of our mouths, and making a mess with those wonderful toys :) Talk about a dream engine; he was talking about himself! Jim’s music ignited our visions, and the shimmering glow illuminated the most “outrageous” of outrageous things - things like “infinite gladness” extinguishing “infinite sadness” (dancing on the edge of a grave beats never knowing how many bad times can follow you so mercilessly). Things like alchemizing salvation from solitude. Things like getting everything you were hoping to give when you ask: Do you have any “sparks” I can borrow just to get me through the lonely night?
Jim’s death took him from us, but his death didn’t kill his marvelously bombastic spirit. It remains alive through Lauren Bradley’s exceptional cover performances! And this version of “The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be” is an even more superb example of that than last year’s. Yes, it’s another wrenching condolence, another tour de force homage to Jim and his music! But it’s even more wrenching, more tour de force-y this time around! Lauren’s astonishing evolution as a vocalist is on full display here! Her singing is even richer. Her connection is even stronger. Her performance is even wilder. And as we all know, when it comes to singing in the house that Jim built - the bigger, the bolder, the braver, the better!
Two years after Jim’s passing, Lauren has now established herself as a She-Bat Out Of Hell with some serious “witch doctor” alive in her blood. She hurts and heals at the same time! Although she sings about endless despair and the inexorable surrender of hope, her singularly inspiring voice assures us that everything will somehow be okay - that the Future Ain’t What It Used To Be, but it might actually be getting a little bit better!
Here’s to you, Jim and Lauren, for all of the “outrageous visions” - the ones that we’ve already witnessed and the ones that are yet to be seen!

AMAZING VERSION! The passion in your voice is what Jim had in mind when he wrote all his songs. He never had in mind, in my opinion, for someone just to be "voicing" the lyrics, and all your songs, you put 110% passion in them!! **** Update: Just re-watched your last year recording, it is like "Sophies Choice"- I love them both!

Yeah, if Jim hears this song today, he is probably saying something like, 'Wow, that was one incredible performance! Lauren Bradley. I will have to remember that name. *smiles*
And for some strange reason, this song has my mind playing the" “Bless All The Girls” section in: I'll kill you if you don't come back to me. And like always whenever I play that song, it plays over and over in my mind for the foreseeable future. *smiles* Bri

Bri!! Great to hear from you as always! Thank you so, so much for saying this!! And, ‘Bless All The Girls’ I know what you’re saying! Are you hearing it in the verses, or somewhere else? Curious to where you’re hearing it!! Thanks so much again for this tremendous comment! :) :)

@@LaurenBradleyGivingOffSparks It was definitely the music that had my mind hearing the music of Bless All The Girls, after I listened to your latest rendition of: The Future Ain't What It Used To Be. I think that it was the piano that drew me to 'that' other song.
I always like to rearrange songs in my head. And when I allowed myself the pleasure this morning of listening to both of these songs that 'we' are talking about, although it might be a bit of a stretch to do so, but I can see/hear the verses from: The Future Ain't What It Used To Be, fit into the Bless All The Girls.
When I look at the words: Say a prayer for the falling angels
Stem the tide of the rising waters
Toll a bell for the broken hearted
Burn a torch for your sons and daughters
The endless night has got a hold of me
Dark days are pulling me forward
And all the tears are washing over me
      I'm crying, lost forever
In a future that ain't what it used to be
No more no more no more....
And of course there is the similarity of both songs living in pain, looking at a future that will never be the same...even though in one of the songs, one desires to live in pain, even though it is torture. I'm not sure if the one in: The future ain;t what is used to be: was living in pain in the relationship. *smiles*
And I'm thinking, one never really knows what the subconscious is thinking. It could very well be that the pain in the verses of: The Future Ain't What It Used To Be drew me to: I'LL KILL YOU IF YOU DON'T COME BACK TO ME.
It's so good to experience, again, the sweet voice of yours, Lauren! *smiles* Bri

@@nicksantus5307 Hey, Nick. I just posted a comment to Lauren's incredible new vid, "Alone," which I understand you (awesomely) suggested! :) I was surfing her other videos and comments and came across this one. I'm guessing that you posted this here by mistake - that is, unless this guy (I'm hopefully not fatally assuming it's a guy :) who has adopted the rather cool alias of "onpointe6404," is also a super-fan of Nightwish and fully appreciates how amazing it must have been for you to be on stage with Troy! As usual, thanks much, Nick, for the very kind words - things are great here and hope the same for you!
