Hey, you guys! I know that this is the same song that I chose to sing & share on here around the very same time last year. Last year, the post was to express my massive sadness when I heard of Jim Steinman's passing.
I just HAD to go with this one a second time.
(even if the backing piano is too loud - not much I can do about it while using the smule platform, unfortunately).
This song, as many of Jim's songs are, is so important to me.
Ya know those times, when you play a song on a loop for countless hours to help you get through something, "when you really, really need it the most?" Last year, around this same time, was one of those times for me, and 'The Future Ain't What It Used To Be' was one of those songs.
When you've been "through a lot of pain in the dirt" it can make someone feel alone, and thanks to Jim, during those really bad times, I never did feel alone, because I knew through his music, and at the time, this song, he and many others shared the same downhearted sentiment at one time or another, just like me, and it's OKAY.
And like I always say, I don't regret it or look back on it or feel bad, because, "there's always something shattered when there's something breaking through." That is for sure the biggest lesson he's taught me. I'm forever grateful to him for that.
    Godspeed.

Jim Steinman died exactly one year ago, and on that day we lost the grand architect of our most “dangerous dreams” - our “secret” dreams - those about cars and engines and inches and heroes and angels on beaches - about boys in castles and mirrors and cages and hunches and crowds and summer and rock and roll! Jim was an outrageous visionary, a modern day musical wizard who dreamt up storms, spun magic out of nothing at all, and alchemized the richest adventures from the simplest nuggets of pure imagination. He was the one who blessed us with his incomparable songs, the one who grew wonder in that rotting old hole, and perhaps most importantly, the one who we went to when we needed to … yep, that’s right - borrow some dreams just to get us through the lonely night!
Jim’s death took him from us, but his death didn’t kill his marvelously bombastic dreams. They’re being kept alive by Lauren Bradley’s stupendous cover performances! And this version of “The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be” is a superb example - an amalgamated super-force of achingly irresistible condolences. Equal parts “solemnly somber” and “strikingly savage,” it’s a hostile wailing, a brokenhearted yowling, a desperate tour-de-force weeping homage to Jim and his masterful music. Through her magnificent singing, Lauren artfully entangles a humble dose of piety with an ambitious slice of piledriver oomph to actually make us bow as she knocks the breath right out of us! At the one-year mark of Jim’s passing, Lauren emerges as a ravishing conquistador-ess with some serious Florence Nightingale in her blood - she impossibly thrashes and comforts at the same time! Although she sings about misery and anguish and vexing uncertainty, her singularly inspiring voice assures us that everything will somehow be okay - that the Future Ain’t What It Used To Be, but that it ain’t as bad as it could have been, either!
Here’s to you, Jim and Lauren, for all of the “dangerous dreams” - the ones that we’ve already dreamt and the ones that are still to be dreamed!

What a way to mark this sad but special occasion! Wonderful rendition!! There really is nothing as sad as a tomorrow gone bad, the future just ain't what it used to be. Remembering the genius Jim Steinman.

Thanks, Kai! And thanks for taking the time out to read the video description (wasn’t sure if people generally do or not). So, I only say it’s too loud bc Smule (the app I use to sing and record the songs as a video) doesn’t allow you to adjust any of the backing track volumes along with your vocals. Some songs it works out fine, but sometimes other songs, it is a bit of a challenge! :) ✌️
