There was never a single blue tone. Every batch of cords or fabric dyed with Tekhelet comes out with a slightly different shade at least. This depends also on the material. Woad has been proved to be the authentic source of this dye, but this will not faze the Orthodox Jews, who are trapped with the Rabbinic decree, recorded in the Tosefta, that the source must be the elusive Ḥilazon.
