Has anyone heard the theory of white and red being associated Christmas being related to the toxic mushroom Amanita Muscaria? Also heard it may have something to to do with the Saami. These are just fringe theories however if I recall correctly. Interesting all the same tho.

I love the way you are always blown away by these old buildings like the cologne cathedral 😊
I reminds me when i stood for the first time in front of it, 515ft high and 472ft long... it was really overwhelming 😂, I would like to see your reaction to "This is Germany" by the channel Dr. Ludwig. It's an Beautiful compilation about Germany's old citys and sights.

I'm trying really hard to not laugh every time you're like "wow it looks so cold". It's Northern Europe, during winter. It's like if I were shocked at Texas for being hot in summer.

in germany are of course many markets that are flooded by tourists. to get the real magic of german markets you need to find the smaller local ones. almost every town in germany has its own market and some of them are just great.
    greetings
p.s. this markets are there to have a fun time with familiy and friends. just to enjoy life.

I'm Irish. The British Royal family attract thousands and thousands of visitors daily. Go to any of the prime locations Buckingham Palace, Windsor etc and its like the whole world is there , some people particularly from some African countries identifiably by their ethnic clothing, also lots of tourists from Japan and China.all Royal sights draw visitors, an interesting one is Hampton Court Palace, about 20 mile outside London, Cardinal Wolsey's residence, later acquired by King Henry 8th. It was home to many other later monarchs as well, but not the more recent monarchs.. I found it very interesting. Now that Covid has gone ( tongue in cheek) see they are again running 3 or 4 day trips to British and Continental Winter Markets again. have never been to one, thinking might venture this year. Cost between about E 250 and E350 including flight and bed and breakfast ,probably a bit extra for a single occupancy in a room. Just thought I would give you a rough idea of the prices, probably cheaper starting out from Great Britain and they may do coach trios to the Continent via the channel tunnel I don't know. Cheers for your future travel .Gorgeous architecture in England loads of Gothic Cathedrals

Laurie, as a foreigner who has traveled to England and has immigrant family who live near London, we come to see the red busses, telephone booths, and pretty palaces. NOT the royal family 🫤 there is a difference. Haha

Little fun fact, that cathedral in cologne you liked took 632 years to build.
Another fun fact, christmas markets actually originated in Germany, its a huuuuge cultural thing.

  • @jochendamm

Especially in Germany christmas markets mainly are for the locals but the bigger ones for tourism as well. The markets in Cologne alone have about 4 million visitors per year. In all over Germany are thousands of markets. The tourism association of my state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) lists over 100 special markets worth to visit. Some of them last only one day or weekend, are located in castles or other special places and have their own charm. Dortmund for example has the world's highest natural christmas tree put together from about 1,700 trees as one giant one. These markets basically are themed trade fairs. But the majority are food and beverage stalls. Typical street food and beverages to warm you up and sweets and candy for the mood. These are gatherings for friends or families having a good time in the grey, dark and cold season. That's why mulled wine is almost everywhere among other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages like punch/glogg or hot chocolate. And the the hearty food items like grilled sausages, potato dishes, fried mushrooms or deep-fried goods.

Use to go almost ever December to a mainland Europe Christmas market. Our most visted was Munich and we also included Nuremberg which was just a hour or so away by train. My favorite was Vienna Austria, but also been to Lille France, Krakow Poland and another German one in Cologne. They are more than just a market friends meet up for drinks and bratwurst. Also there is often a main market but also smaller markets are often scattered around the city and in suburbs. Certainly an experience.

Best christmas market is always at your local village or town. The youth club will sell sausage and Glühwein and you meet your friends and neigbors.

Many christmas traditions in different countries are older than christianity in these countries. In many cultures in December were very important holidays, for example about sun, and when christianity came to these countries, they taken people's beliefs and tradition and gave them christian names... So, that's why there are so many different traditions between countries. ;) For example I'm from Poland and here christmas looks almost like old slavic holidays in December, the same meaning, the same traditions, just different name.

Where I live we have four nice, solid seasons. The constant 38 C sounds exhausting, and I imagine it’s humid also in Texas. It gets like that in the summer here, but you go to the coast then :) Now we are getting into 0-10 C temperatures, the winter is getting closer, for sure. Personally, I preffer spring and autumn, early and late summer... best temperatures and weather.

As a Spaniard living in Germany, i knew from the beginning that a German city would be the no 1, but it’s actually an insult to all the other cities on the list and especially to other German cities that it’s COLOGNE. The city we’re the least proud of. I could list 20 Christmas markets in Germany that are more worth visiting. The best ones are undoubtedly in Dresden and Nürnberg

How to build a cathedral? Just when it has been finished renovation starts and there is a permanent workshop (Dombauhütte) rebuilding what is too old. Most of the time you can see scaffolding at on or the other point.

not them using a video from the Czech Republic for part of the Manchester Market...there is a word: STAROMĚSTSKÉ on one of the stalls..that doesn't sound so English, does it? XD
and when I found the video and watched ahead they did it again with Posnan, where is clearly visible TRDELNÍK, VESELÉ VÁNOCE, or the beggining of the word ČEPOVANÉ
I am not mad at them only because you have Prague on the first place...the Czech republic deserves the credit

If you wanna come to Europe and not be freezing, you can always come to Spain, It is one of the warmest countries in Europe, specially the south of Spain. It is also beautiful, it has so much history and,of course, it has cathedrals and palaces and other very very old monuments too, so you would love it. The temperature is from 77 Fahrenheit to 104 Fahrenheit in some places, so you definitely wont be freezing haha
Im sure you can also find other places like this in the south of italy, portugal, greece...
So, theres many countries in Europe for people who dont like the cold :)
(My favorite city that Ive been so far is Granada, it is in the region of Andalucia in southern Spain) its gorgeous!!
