In recent years tourism to this part of Wales has exploded and its putting a lot of pressure on local infrastructure, many of the beaches are now inaccessible during school holidays due to large visitor numbers, it was a well kept secret in the past with Cornwall being the default go-to for most brits but that secret is now well and truly out.

My Dad was born in Tenby in 1914. He lived there till he was 12 and then they moved to a city in the Midlands. He hated it so much that he ran away back to Tenby and camped on the Rectory Field (now a car park) till he was found. His parents moved back to Tenby for their retirement. I went on holiday there every year from aged 1 to 19.
It is a wonderful and uplifting place. Dad's ashes are scattered off Giltar Point at the end of the South Beach. There is so much to see round Tenby and it also has the best Fish and Chip shops in the country! It also has the largest parish church in Wales where Robert Recorde is buried. Who he? You ask - he is the man who invented the equals (=) sign.

I live in Tenby in my family's old house, retired here 15 years ago. I volunteer on St. Catherine's Island and I am on your video collecting the money at the bottom of the steps. Some questions you asked... How much are houses? Expensive! Tenby has been discovered by Londoners. The houses you see from the fort are more than £1 million each. There are cheaper houses but a lot are second homes or rented as AirBnB's so the cheapest are £250,000/350,000 plus. So to answer your second question there are plenty of places to stay and many hotels as well. The peak season is traditionally Easter to the end of September for visits but many people prefer staycations outside the season when Tenby is less crowded and prices are cheaper. If you come to Tenby come and say hello if you visit the fort.

Most of us in the UK stay in Bed and Breakfast Hotels when we visit the seaside. Small, cosy hotels with a welcoming landlady, often family run, that provide Bed, breakfast and often an evening meal, communal lounge and bar. People keep returning year after year because of the friendly more personal service. You'll find many to choose from in every seaside town.

You are right - you would think it was somewhere abroad. After so many years going to Europe, there are so many stunning places in the UK which I now want to visit. In your video about holiday plans, you mentioned coming over during the school holiday period (which in England is 6 weeks from approx 21-25 July to first week of September). I lived there for a year and a bit in 2007 for about £50 a week. I am local though and had connections. Now Tenby is getting more attention, it becomes increasingly difficult for locals to buy a house etc. Most move away for employment as it is the arse end of nowhere with nothing outside of seasonal work for the young, and maybe the building trades for the homes of the rich who move there. Once gone, you can't get back unless you live in your parents house.

My wife and I love Tenby. We have been visiting for a few years and it is really great on many levels. Plenty of restaurants and eateries, beautiful beaches and walking and an ideal base to explore more of Pembrokeshire, which is (mostly) a beautiful part of Wales. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path is really beautiful. A visit to St Davids is a must see, and if you are interested in history then Pembroke Castle is worth a visit.
However, a few words of guidance. It gets very busy during the school holidays - late July through to the start of September ( book well ahead if you want to eat out). The weather can be quite variable, so come prepared for sun, rain, hot and cold. Our favourite time is early July. A boat trip out to Caldey Island is recommended - a monastery dating back 1,500 years, it is now mainly a nature reserve with red squirrels and other wildlife. It’s only a 20 minute boat ride from Tenby and makes for a lovely day out. For visitors from, for example, the US, please bear in mind that it is a 4-hour (plus!) drive to Tenby from the western fringes of London. We live in Surrey and we break our journey for lunch in Chepstow, which is a destination in itself. The M4 through South Wales can get very very busy so don’t expect to be driving at 70mph! It’s worth it though 😎
PS: If you can book It, we can recommend the Ocean Suite at the Atlantic Hotel - a well hidden gem.

What wasn’t mentioned in the video that is a must to take the boat ride to Caldey Island. Caldey is home to a monestery. The monks are still at the monastery. Loved Tenby, wandered into a pub and the landlord said 'Aw, we're not open for another hour.....would you like a drink while you wait?' - They're very friendly in Tenby, brilliant. Love Debbie's 'We can buy that'. I'd definitely pick end of May/June for your trip over - the weather is likely to be good & it doesn't get dark till gone 10.30pm in Scotland, perfect for sitting by the side of a Loch. All the gardens & parks will be in full bloom. Yes, the sea is cold, it's always cold. When booking accommodation don't overlook Caravan Holiday Parks - you can rent a self-catering static caravan/lodge for a good price and within easy reach of lots of stuff to see and do.

I live 3 miles from Tenby, lovely place to visit, gets extremely busy in the Summer especially within the 6 weeks school holidays (end of July to 1st wk in Sept) locals who live outside of Tenby tend to avoid it due to parking problems, but there is a park and ride available. There is another beach just round the corner (Saundersfoot) a bit smaller than Tenby but just as popular with a lovely walk round to the next bay to Wisemans Bridge. Also, you're on the doorstep for Carew Castle, Manorbier Castle and Pembroke Castle, all open to the public and not to be missed.
Bosherston Lily Ponds is another lovely place with the most photographed beach in Pembs and a Chapel (St. Govans) built into the side of the Cliff , a walk past Stack Rocks is wonderful.
Not sure what you're plans are for getting around transport wise and you need to start looking at booking somewhere to stay now in Tenby as it's so popular people tend to book again as soon as they get home for the following year. Lots of caravan parks available around Tenby, ideal as you can please yourself with coming and going.
If you need a driver to get you around any of these places or any others give me a shout (serious offer) 🙂

If indeed you have serious thoughts of moving to this area of Pembrokeshire (Sîr Penfro), then please remember that 30 percent of the area's people speak Welsh (Cymraeg) and that the town of Tenby is an anglicised abbreviation of the Welsh name Dinbych-y-Pysgod (Little fort of fishes). If you intend visiting Tenby, and Port Meirion, an inexpensive place to stay would be the university town of Aberystwyth, where student digs are rented out during the long vac. It is 70 miles north of Dinbych-y-Pysgod and 57 miles south of Portmeirion. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Love your videos Debbie and Natasha! Just one warning about visiting Britain - the vagaries of the weather. Tenby and any other place looks much better with a blue sky overhead. I'm a 'senior' now, but we used to go often in the summer to Tenby and only have happy memories. We stayed at a superior type Caravan park just further down the beach from the town, went with our friends when their kiddies were younger, including our own young son. The beaches are as good as they look here. One year we could not stand on the beach with bare feet because the sand was so hot! In a later year we stayed at a large hotel on the South Beach opposite beautiful Caldy Island, and our large corner window took in the gorgeous view. When we had arrived though it was blowing a small gale and raining. The next day it was warm and wonderful for walking. Just remember the tip about the weather. Pembrokeshire (its English name) is the county and is green and not so mountainous as some part of Wales. I'm English, but I give high marks to Tenby and other places in Pembrokeshire. Wales has great beauty - but the weather can sometimes let you down. As long as you remember that, I hope when you visit Britain you are rewarded by good weather. (I personally love our weather, it suits me with all its changes and variety). Hope this is helpful. You are great.
