Girls, you have just made me oh, so happy with this video. I used to love going down to Brighton with my late parents (RIP), because we would go down there to visit my now late grandparents (RIP), as well as go for some Fish & Chips at the seaside.
My late mother (RIP) was a Sussex lass, & my father (RIP) a Warwickshire lad, so I have dual-county allegiances here. The last time I ever went down there, was to bury my late grandfather (RIP). That was almost 11 years ago, miserable weather for a miserable occasion. Again, thank you girls so much for bringing back so many happy memories for me personally.

I got lost on Brighton beach when I was about 6. My dad took me to the public toilets, when I came out I didn't immediately see him so decided to make my way back to our spot on a beach with literally thousands of people on in. I got totally lost, some people found me and took me to the police tent where a policeman bought me an ice cream. My frantic parents found me shortly thereafter and were in floods of tears and I was just like "look mummy I got an ice cream". I think my mum is still traumatised about the incident decades later!

My first visit to Brighton in 1967 was a defining day for me. The Univ of Sussex had been one of my picks for undergraduate study (though I ended up in Montréal). I was invited for interview. I was put up at a guest house in Brighton. The hosts were the first openly gay men I had ever met! Initially bemused, confused, even a tad afraid, as a naïve 17-yr old only child, I ended up having great fun with my hosts. One of my sons is gay and married. My Brighton experience paved the way for my open acceptance of my son and his Oregonian husband. ❤

The Prince regent who lived in the Pavillion decorated the inside with a very strong Chinese theme, completely ignoring that all the architecture was Indian! It was used as a hospital for Indian soldiers in WW1.
The most famous depiction of the Prince Regent was by Hugh Laurie in Blackadder III , who portrayed him as the ultimate upper class twit.

The Royal Pavilion is stunning…top of my ‘must see’ list in Brighton. You can take a room-by-room 360 degree ‘virtual tour’. Search “Virtual tour of the Royal Pavilion - Brighton & Hove Museums”. There’s audio commentary for each room (click arrow at top left of the first room image) and tap black dots super-imposed on the walls for info on notable features. Of course a real life visit is better … but this is a nice “taster”.

Brighton Pavilion is an amazing, over the top building which verges on the vulgar but is nevertheless entirely mesmerising. It also was full of up-to-date fixtures of the era. George 1V's inspiration for the Pavilion was Sezincote, a large country house in Gloucestershire built by a nabob, i.e., one who had made a fortune working in the Indian subcontinent for the notorious East India Company. It is a much more modest and refined structure than the Pavilion built in the Indian style, with a charming garden laid out with a central water course and geometrical design again in the Moghul style.
Sezincote is open to the public.

I grew up in the country and when my boyfriend wanted to buy a house in Brighton, I was so against it as I'm not a 'city girl' but this place is just so cool and it grew on me so fast! I think there is a place for everyone in Brighton and it does sometimes feel like a mini London but with the added bonus of the sea. I love how inclusive and alternative it is; there's always something to see and do here. I thought I'd be desperate to move back to a quieter area but I've been here for 8 years now and I'm happy.

One things these videos miss is that behind Brighton, and nearby coastal towns are the South Downs, which in places have fantastic views over the sea, and down the coastline to the Seven Sisters cliffs. Not to mention that the South Downs are the newest national park in the UK. Why is nobody mentioning this? Lewes is a fantastic medieval town with a castle at the top & Priory ruins in the valley, with the Downs as a backdrop.

Quintessentially English scene. Then stroll down to the valley for a lunch at the ancient "Shepherd and DOG" in the village below the Dyke. I'm a HUGE Elvis fan and, of course, you're right that he loved the dodgems and loved to go on them with his guys. Have you also heard of the 'Zippin Pippin' which was Elvis' favourite roller coaster. He would rent the whole of 'Libertyland Fairground' in Memphis so that he and his friends and family could enjoy the rides and he would ride the 'Zippin Pippin' for hours at a time without stopping. I've been lucky enough to visit Libertyland before it closed. The 'Zippin Pippin' is now the oldest existing roller coaster in US and it is still in operation now in Green Bay, Wisconsin 😍

Brighton was the place to go to be healed of many diseases and ailments. They used to believe drinking the sea water was healing in Regency times.
The Royal Pavilion was commissioned to be built for the Prince Regent to resemble the Taj Mahal!!
I really hope you have the opportunity to visit my hometown. Just don't forget to stop and look up at the architecture and history. Quite often people are so consumer by what's in front of their eyes, they don't see the tops of the buildings which are stunning

Brighton, for me is all the better on a foggy/misty day - far less tourists about and it allows you to discover all those nooks and crannies. The architecture throughout is a wonderful mix of old and new, and the shopping quarter known as The Laines holds many a surprise.
The gentry built homes on the Montpelier district and those white painted homes today, still exude the grandeur of the time. Built on the higher ground from the coast and fishing village below.
There is nothing better than an aimless wander around this coast and then heading inland to saviour some fantastic places to eat.

The hills on either side of Brighton & Hove are the south downs chalk cliffs from Dover to the isle of White along the length of the English Channel, on a still morning the mist can roll in from the sea to give a misty morning and a bright sunny day, Brighton is about an hour from London but the BBC did a film where it took apparently only 4 minutes

I lived in Shoreham which is about 4 miles west - GF and I would often spend Saturdays just cruising around the back street. If it wasn't for the fog you could see the big Shoreham power station chimneys. This was in the late 60's and the big night out was the Top Rank Ballroom and all the big names would play there and you met everyone you knew! Very busy in mid summer - great - loved it!

Hello Natasha & Debbie. Loads of seaside towns have piers. They were made to provide seaside visitors with extra tourism opportunities. Many with theatres at the end. The other thing it gave the seaside was the facility to allow paddle steamers the drop off literally boat loads of visitors and day trips for visitors. I remember as a child the family took a paddle steamer from Bournemouth pier to the Isle of Wight. Not many paddle steamers left now but one, the Waverley, the World’s last sea-going paddle steamer. A few years ago I went from a local town called Penarth’s pier to Ilfracombe’s pier in North Devon. Unfortunately, the piers are prone to fire, and we have lost many piers this way.
The longest pier in the UK is in Southend-on-Sea. It’s 1.34 miles long and has its own electric railway!

One thing that wasn't mentioned in the video you watched is that Brighton is not just popular because it is a famous seaside town turned city, but it is also just about THE most popular conference venue in the whole of the UK. All kinds of annual conferences for all kinds of groups, societies, and professions are held there, which is why there are almost endless hotels, guest houses (bed and breakfast), pubs, restaurants, cafes, etc.

Hi girls. Yes, Brighton's ok, but you should look at Scarborough, the UK s first seaside resort. It has 3000 years of history, with a great castle, & has been a resort since the ,17th century. The famous song 'Scarborough Fayre', is a traditional ballad recalling the ancient 40 day summer market held there in medieval times, & it's in Yorkshire! Enjoy.

The Lanes he delved into at the end are amazing and you can look around for a big chunk of the day. There is also a cool gig venue on the seafront hidden under some arches, don't think he showed that. Also there is soooo much good food up in the lanes! 😊 There was recently a fire in one of the 18th century hotels on the seafront 💔 luckily not the one shown in this vid

I love English Language - and taught it for many years - so thanks for the Elvis Dodgems vs Bumper Cars anecdote, which got me thinking and searching...turns out that Dodgems is a 1920s USA proprietary name (as "Dodg'em"), from the phrase "dodge them" while Bumper Cars is what the two US brothers who invented them named them. So now we know! Britain only got them in 1928 so I think both terms are US English and we here in the UK were told they were called Dodgems and have stuck with that! Oh, and a Flume (also leat or mill-leat) is a channel that is used to transport water from some source - such as a river - to the top of a waterwheel. This is used to direct water flow onto the blades of the wheel, allowing it to rotate. Love from Wales!

When I had my last motorbike I used to go to Brighton every single weekend and then ride the fabulous coast road up to Dover and back. The highlight of the day was always finishing up on Brighton Pier and getting a portion of noodles from this cracking little noodle stall I used to love! I need a new bike!
Oh yeah, I have a funny and totally true bike related story about Brighton! When I was working as a motorcycle courier in London we had a new rider who was foreign and still learning English. On his first day he was told to turn up bright and early to make a good impression, which is a typically British expression, and at 8am our controller got a phone call from him saying he was in Brighton and was early to make a good impression!

For quite a few years my family and I used to go to Brighton one day a year, around April time, because we were involved in the Sunbeam London to Brighton Run (Vintage and Veteran Motorcycles). Funnily enough - although it was early in the year - I only remember it being sunny and warm. Well, whatever the weather we always had a happy day. A friend offered us the chance of a long weekend in their home in Brighton while they were on holiday elsewhere. The whole family had a wonderful time. Not really doing much - just people watching, walking around the town, beside the sea, along the Pier, trying out different restaurants. There was a completely different atmosphere there that felt truly unique to Brighton. Another great reaction ladies. Thank you. Have a happy day ladies - love from the UK

Yes, girls, please do Blackpool next! For the Northwest of England - Liverpool and Manchester especially, it is the most popular traditional historical Victorian seaside resort - there is a lot of snobbery that decries the place - very cheap and cheerful for the average Brit, normal everyday working class, but you would be missing out if you didn't at least check it out as qn authentic English seaside destination during your trip.

I lived in Brighton for ten years. Best time of my life. You wander through the city on any given day and at every turn, something magical is going on. Be it art, music, comedy, theatre... you name it, it's happening everywhere all the time. The nightlife is fantastic. The area also benefits from a microclimate thanks to the topography. It can be positively tropical there and utterly miserable just five/ten miles north. When you come to the UK, Brighton is on your "must do" list.

I used to head down to Brighton from time to time when I lived in London. My favourite place was the Sea Life Centre. They used to sell little tubs of food to feed the flatfish. They'd swim to the surface for the food and you could sort of pet them. So we'd feed the rays and afterwards go for fish and chips.

Just after leaving high school I worked for a summer on Hastings Pier, and the amount of maintenance they require is extremely high. I mean, some of it you expect as something very exposed to the weather, plus to a lot of corrosive salt in the damp air, and the fact that most of them are historical buildings. However, those wooden decks have to be hosed down at least twice each day during sunny days to prevent the planks from completely drying out and becoming fragile. You can't replace them with artificial planks made from modern resins or plastics, of course, because almost all of these historical piers are listed historical buildings, meaning that parts can only be replaced with authentic materials (and building methods). Hastings Pier has long enclosed sections with hundreds of tall but narrow windows, and those windows have to be cleaned every single day, all of them, to preserve the clear views and the presentation standards that visitors will expect.
