I should say I'm only joking here because I'm not great at communicating even with some friends and family because I can come across as rude or dry but couldn't be further from the truth, a few times I've worried about so called jokes or just brief comments I've left on here. I'm a gruff Scotsman, it's not my fault lol.... Anyhoo... In the thumbnail you look like those Americans who think us Europeans live in wooden huts and grow our own food in the garden and have a couple of goats and are just realising we actually have supermarkets 😂😅.
Ps I love this channel.... Obviously

Here in London anyway most supermarkets (Waitrose, Sainsbury's, ASDA, Morrison's, Tescos, Co-Op...) do online shopping with home delivery or pickup (they pick and bag your order and you just go and pick it up). In the past I've used Waitrose online but now use the Amazon Fresh and/or Morrison's via my Amazon Prime account.

@@1nikg Don't worry about it, this is from a grumpy old Englishman who could probably get a PHd in sarcasm with a dry sense of humour. I appreciate a bit of gruff, honest commentary and back-handed "compliments". The banter between myself and my old "dour Scotsman" work colleagues could get quite ribald but in reality was like a friendly competition. After a brief "getting to know" period, just be you, and don't take offence (even if it was intended - it's not worth the bother or worrying about).
If exchanging friendly insults were an Olympic sport I think England and Scotland would be vying for gold and silver (with Wales going for bronze - the Irish would probably get disqualified for taking offence).

Thing is, at this moment in time, we are getting so many product recalls it's astounding! Anything from potential allergens not on the ingredients list to small pieces of plastic, metal, even glass! Although, mercifully for myself, I don't shop for these particular types of goods - the goods being processed - I do wonder what the H is going on? I home prepare all my food from scratch, but it must be concerning for others that use these types of convenience products and I just wonder if, considering these bits of plastic, metal and glass, if the companies whose machinery used to prepare these foodstuffs aren't being maintained properly to cut costs. As I said, these incidences of product recall because of these bits being found are practically on a daily basis.

I mix shop every week between Aldi, farmfoods and Tesco. I spend approx £150-200 a week for my family of 5. (We have 2 teenage daughters. And and 8 year old son) That includes toiletries, dove wash, Toni and guy shampoo and conditioner makeup etc. they have so many brands of makeup and hair stuff in Tesco with many products in Tesco on offer. And you get things cheaper in Tesco of you have a club card and you get money back in Tesco too.
Congrats on your 35 years Debbie - did you start hairdressing at age 5-7? You look about my age, 42. You actually look younger now than when your show first started! I need to use the face cream you use! You look great! Younger by the week

The German supermarkets checkouts are super fast because of the way they do things in Germany. Most people don't use plastic bags. Many people use foldable crates that live in their car boots. You just put the shopping back into the trolley and wheel it out to the car park then you pack your shopping direct I to your car. If you want to use bags, you put the food straight back into your trolley then go to the packing area away from the checkout where you can pack leisurely. This keeps the queues shorter and more efficient.

Don't know about Lidl in the UK but I know that quite a few of the off brand products are made in the SAME FACTORY as the brand products just under a different name here in the " "motherland" of Lidl and Aldi. 😁

The majority of big brand factories make the same products as the off brand. Take Snackrite crisps and nuts which are sold in Aldi.. These are actually made by the same factory as KP. And Belmont biscuits are made by United Biscuits. (McVities). The main difference is that they change some of the ingredients like the grain, sugar & preservatives to cheaper versions for the off-band version.

I recently saw a tv programme about the 'luxury' fresh soups one can find in supermarkets here.. much more expensive than the tinned type. This is true. I work in a factory and we do exactly this. We have our own premium brand which is the full fat, full flavour and the stuff we make for the like of Lidl which in fairness does have a difference in ingredients (making it cheaper to make and have less flavour), but by the packaging you wouldn't know it was made by us.

She missed out Britain's largest supermarket chain - Tesco. Also, apart from the mention at 'Amazon Fresh' she did not visit Morrisons, and she also forgot about ALDI - a German 'discount supermarket' similar to LIDL. [In fact, these two supermarket chains were created after a split in the original ALDI company due to a disagreement between the owners.]

You can buy 'branded' goods in Lidl, but not all of them. Branded goods, most often, just mean more expensive.
In Waitrose and M&S, own brands are brilliant, and elsewhere they are perfectly good in general.

    • @Wabbit_Hunta
      @Wabbit_Hunta 6 месяцев назад

No "branded" goods in the Lidl that's recently opened near me as they're all unknown brands, I've not used it but people I know who've used Lidl seem happy with them and say they're good.
I prefer M&S for baked goods, fresh meats and dairy produce, as well as Waitrose as you get what you pay for with regards to better ingredients used, and that means means better tasting, and better quality food/goods. It may well cost more, but I'd rather that than buy "inferior" products and not eat/use them as the poor quality impacts them. (Once bitten twice shy as it were)

Not sure that someone who goes out shopping for ready meals and meal deals is the best example of supermarket shopping in UK, nor by hunting for anything that's £1 which is really limiting, but it does give a vague idea of what's available. The trollies take a £1. But you can buy trolley tokens which are the same size but often have some sort of emblem, be it the supermarket logo or maybe a charity logo or small business. Some stores like Morrison's have been putting tokens in them before hand so you don't need em though, especially since the pandemic.

Firstly the chemistry and the personality differences between you both are what makes it feel like family and adds so much of the value - a bit like Morcambe and Wise (a very British reference there and meant as a compliment)!! Anyway, if you really are interested in British supermarket products may I recommend the 'Bald Foodie Guy' channel here on RUclips. He reviews lots of UK supermarket stuff although not Waitrose, as his nearest would be in Preston, about a 60 mile drive each way from Barrow-in-Furness, although he does cover Booths, which is his regional equivalent. As a single male who lives in an area with plenty of options for shopping for groceries, I find that I will always be visiting different stores in order to find items that are not available from every location. However for preference most of my purchases are made from the budget end of the stores, such as Aldi and Lidl, but I am a sucker for Asda’s muffins and there’s a particular make of pie that is only available from Morrisons (own brand) and I am always looking to find bargains or reduced items, I know the location of the reduced item shelves in every store I enter. In addition to the chain stores though I really enjoy touring the small independent shops and the local farmers markets whenever I get the chance, especially the butchers and bakeries. So there’s always something else to look for, I also since I live alone, find that I usually find myself having a chat or sometimes a cuppa tea and a quick snack either in the in store cafeteria or in a local sandwich shop just to get out of my house.

    • @mx986
      @mx986 6 месяцев назад +1

I'm the same. My local Lidl as soon as they open on Sunday morning is the hot spot for reduced items. My freezer is always full of 60% off goods. Not sure where you live but Google local social groups in your area if you're feeling a bit isolated. I joined a walking group a few years ago and it's very social (made lots of friends there, always something going on). You'd be surprised at the range of groups out there (cinema, dining, dancing, etc, etc....). Something for everyone and they all welcome new members. Your post resonated with me. You're not alone ! All the best !

The idea of the coin in the cart is to ensure that the cart is returned. You then get the coin back. It has two upsides. 1, the cart gets returned and 2. Less carts are dumped in the river! Many people carry a disk on their keyring that acts like a coin, so no need then to carry a coin.

Scan and shop is fantastic when you’re disabled, and when you have a tight budget. You scan as you go, so you don’t have to unload the trolley again, nor repack. SO much easier when you’re disabled.
And it adds it up as you go, so u can keep a close eye on the total as you go. Much easier to keep to the budget.
The trolley £ is returned when you return the trolley.
Waitrose is the higher end supermarket but they’ve recently extended their ‘essentials’ range and it’s much better. Plus their fresh chicken is SO much better quality. As long as you shop smart you can do quite well. If you buy branded it’ll inevitably cost more…

    Checkout wins for me:-
I pack my bags with the heavy stuff first so the cream cake /sliced loaf doesn't get crushed.
If you're scan checked they take it all out & shove it back in randomly.
self checkout systems always confuse me (unexpected item in te bagging aea)
Till checkout is friendly. You queue, chat, get help with your items put back in your trolley. Get the weather forecast, news , gossip-true or false no matter. Most important is you are interacting with the operater so life is not boring.

I'm lucky that the 'local' M&S and Waitrose are a fairish drive and a walk from the carpark into town away; that saves me a _lot_ of money.
Not that the are massively more expensive, just the have so much excellent and temping food that I usually spend a small fortune when I shop there!
Usually is enough to go into my village and use the co-op, and local, independent deli, green grocer's, baker's and butchers.
All high quality (often local produce), reasonably priced, supporting local shops, and not needing drive anywhere.
Occasionally I'll do a 'big shop', useally at Morisson's, as that a bit easier to get to. But these out-of-town shops are so big now. I usually end up with a basket or trolly full of things I didn't go for, and hardly any of the things I _did_ go for..

I would normally have a mix of brands and store label stuff, but normally the store label items are made by the branded companies, so the quality is normally really good. The trolly coin is returned to you when you return the trolly. In the 80's people would leave trollies all over town and stores had to go and collect them. You don't see them abandoned anymore. Waitrose and M&S are at the higher end with Lidl and Aldi at the budget end. On the subject of Lidl, I think in Europe they pronounce it Leedle whereas in the UK we say Liddle, which Lidl themselves have picked up with their “Middle of Lidl” isle with offers. I live in France. I shop at Lidl (which is German) and LeClerc (which is French) as in my opinion they have the best deals. Yes, I shop for deals. We pay for carts but you can get a free token in the store if you ask. The scanner you saw at the beginning can be found in some stores.

The supermarket I've used the most is probably Asda. Aesthetically, it looks like Walmart, as they used to be owned by Walmart, so they had a lot of the same signs which they ended up keeping. They sold it a few years ago. That's the sort of store with groceries, instore bakery, clothing, general household stuff, basic motoring supplies, a cafe etc etc, plus they may also have other things in the store like an opticians, post office or even a McDonald's in some stores

ASDA IS from the origional company that was ASSOCIATED DAIRIES, WHO used to deliver milk & dairy products & some other groceries DAILY to your door, when supermarkets took off they created ASDA Taken from the first two letters of the parent Co name, Sadly it was a double edged sword as the supermarkets brought about the demise of the home delivery milkmen, who also acted as a free carer for the elderly & single Lone occupants if the milk was still on the doorstep from the following day they would contact the neighbours who could check on them or call assistance!! But all that was lost thtough modern Greedy Consumerism much to our Social Loss??

No.... ASDA used to be owned by ASDA - **NOW** they are owned by Walmart. Technically they are supposed to be owned by someone else as of a few years ago, but for all intents and purposes Walmart are still in charge.

Firstly for Debbie ♥. Several people use different supermarkets like for example they'll use one of the budget stores Like Aldi or Lidl for the bulk of their shop then go to a mid or higher range store for those goods or brands they couldn't get at the budget place. I use Aldi for the bulk of my shop and then Sainsbury's (because it is nearby) for items and brands not available at Aldi. If I want a high quality ready meal or higher end or unusual ingredients I might go to Waitrose or M&S food hall. I'm not exclusively a supermarket shopper though, I'm lucky enough to have a small independent greengrocer (fruit and veg) at the end of my road so I get my quality fruit and veg from there.

I wouldn't shop at Aldi or Lidl even if you paid me to, terrible stores. Tesco, CO-OP, and Sainsbury's I'll shop at, Aldi and Lidl never ever.

The trouble with shopping from different stores is, if you're driving, the extra fuel cost, or, if you are using public transport you incur extra fares and if you're walking, you've got bag loads of shopping to lug around with you.

The Aldi and Sainsbury's I use are less than a mile apart in the town where I live so it is all one round trip on the same day. I walk to the green grocer at the end of my road@@davidspear9790

Waitrose may appear expensive, however all the colleagues are partners who have a share of the profits so are invested in good service. All british fruit and veg can be traced to each grower with details as to their methods and fair payment. They should also be producers within 30 miles of the source store. The meat is similarly tracked to each individual animal with higher levels of animal husbandry and humane treatment again local farms to each store.
These are some of the reasons you pay a fraction more ,but if you want to shop ethically with convenience Waitrose can be a starting point to this journey.Hope this helps.❤

As a second comparison she could do Tesco, Sainsbury, Aldi and morrisons which with the ones shes done pretty much covers the major supermarkets inthe uk. Scan as you go is very convenient as you can pack as you go and then just pay and put them in the boot of the car.

The trolleys are racked and connected by chains that release the trolly when the pound is put in the trolley. The trolley releases the pound when you reconnect it to a chain chain. Most of these are also intelligent trolleys which lock their wheels if pushed over the supermarkets boundary to stop people wheeling shopping home and abandoning the trolley

Natasha & Debbie there definitely needs to be a part 2. The big 4 UK supermarkets (in terms of turnover) are Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco, and are all similar in price and much cheaper than Waitrose. Morrisons and Tesco have "club cards" which give you discounts etc, and Sainsbury's has Nectar (which some other UK stores use) on which you accrue points for discounts etc. Also, these other three supermarkets have plenty of their own brand products which offer good value and for food items Morrisons and Sainbury's are pretty good (almost as good as Waitrose). Finally, these four supermarkets have service stations at their bigger stores and they are starting to introduce (which Australian supermarkets have done for over 25 years) schemes where if you spend a certain amount in-store you get a coupon to get a discount (usually 5p per litre) on your fuel bill.
