I'm doing the old and the new setup with my M1 Max except with the 2011-16 thunderbolt display model. The thunderbolt display works perfectly with the apple tb3-tb2 adapter and my M1 Max. Looking forward to receiving the studio display sometime this year hopefully. lol

Hey, i know this is late but did you use apple tb3 to tb2 ? Or another brand ? Because my im trying to use the led cinema display with my m3 but its not working
I recently bought a used Thunderbolt Display over the new Studio Display because of the nice APPLE logo on the bottom bezel ;-?) Not really of course, it was all about cost. For what I paid I could buy 8 of these TBDs for the price of 1 Studio Display. Positives; still that beautiful solid APPLE design and OS compatibility, the ports, surprised how good it looks for photography and videos, and sound is also surprisingly good. Yes, it was a compromise, the SD is better is every way. But, this will be fine as a practical and usable option. For what is does and the price difference, I’m happy.
Apple Cinema Display has one advantage over the thunderbolt display or Studio Display for me - the former is compatible with my Windows-based laptop, while the latter does not even using a thunderbolt dock station, so I can use the same monitor for both my Macbook Pro 13" and Dell Laptop from work.
Here's my "funny" Apple display story (that fits nicely with this video) I bought the 24" (yes, I said 24" Apple Cinema Display in October 2009 for $999 (I almost choked it was so expensive...I paired it with my 2009 $1799 first generation Macbook Air laptop)......in summer of 2012 (almost 3 years later...but just three months before my AppleCare warrenty expired) the 24" Cinema Display "crapped out" on me. I took it into my local Apple Store in July 2012. I learned that day that the 24" Apple Cinema Display had been replaced by a 27" Apple Cinema Display in 2011.....in summer of 2012 apple just began selling the 27" Apple THUNDERBOLT display.....The apple store still had a brand new in the box 27" Cinema Display....so guess what they did....they swapped my "crapped out" almost 3-year old 24" Cinema and GAVE ME FOR NO COST the brand new 27" Apple Cinema Display. That was July 2012....it is now late August 2024 (12 years later) and my 27" Apple Cinema Display is STILL GOING STRONG connected to my 2011 Mac Mini. Yes, 2011 Mac Mini. Are apple products expensive? Hell YES !!!! But they last foreever and as you illustrated in this video Taylor the "old" 27" Cinema Display sure looks pretty damn good even today in 2024 compared to a "state-of-the-art" $1600 (2022) Apple Studio Display. YES... I'm a happy camper !!!! (great comparison video young man)
That's awesome! I love hearing stories like that and Apple treated you right. I'm glad to hear it's been serving you well for all this time. Hope it lasts for many years to come. Thanks 🙏
My current setup is a 2013 trash can Mac Pro with 1 LED Cinema Display and 1 Thunderbolt Display. I still see myself on the trash can for a year or two, but I'll eventually replace it with a new Mac Mini. I'll be re-using these two displays on the new system when I do, though! I don't need super crazy resolution for what I do (audio editing and Vectorworks); these displays look great and all the extra ports come in handy. Is the new Studio Display better? Of course. But unless you're deep into serious video or graphics production, it's definitely not worth the hefty price tag. Nice video!
Thanks RT! The trash can is such a cool Mac. Make the most of what you got and probably by the time you’re ready to make a new purchase there will be new, shiny stuff out. Have a great weekend!
I am rocking the same two monitors, the studio display connected to my MacBook Pro 14 and the Cinema Display connected to my work PC Laptop. The problem after some PC updates, my sound on the Cinema display is glitchy, I now have have to connect my Logitech Brio webcam straight to the docking station instead of back of the monitor and I had to unplug the USB from the monitor to the docking station. The sound still works through the mini DP connection. Still working with this workaround.
I have experienced similar issues and have just appreciated it for the display aspect. I wish the extras held up with time but port tech has advanced so much it's understandable that it can't keep up.
I still have two Apple Thunderbolt displays hooked up to an iMac. I've thought about trading them in for the new Studio display but the huge price tag just isn't worth it for how similar the two models are and how great the Thunderbolt displays still are in 2022
@@TaylorBrauer Question, why don't you just get a $500 4k displays instead of the Cinema Display? Specs wise those should beat the Cinema Display while still cheap and modern.
I've own two 27" displays in 2017 -2019 and they worked great on my 2015 15" MBP. Recently got a maxed out m1 air and it eplaced my 2017 5k maxed iMac and for this display. That's awesome. They've really worked out for you for a long time. The specs might be a bit dated but they are still great build quality. Congrats on the new MBP!
If you plan to build a dual monitor setup with old Thunderbolt displays, you should take into account that the devices almost all have different brightness levels due to their age. Over the last few years I've had about 7 Thunderbolt displays and the brightness has been between 3,900 (almost yellow image) and 5,900 (pretty good white) lux. Apparently the displays burn out over the years depending on how heavily they're used. I measured 6,500 lux during the iMac 5K DIY monitor conversion.
@@TaylorBrauer There is a similar problem with the Retina iMacs from 2014 and later. For my DIY 5K display, I had to buy several old iMacs until I found a model without a pink edge (yellow/pink/brown edge on a white background), ghosting/burn in, dust between the display panel and the glass...

Thanks you very much for such a nice review! I have owned this Cinema display since 2010, and I love it. Now I would like to connect it to my m2 iPad Pro. What is the best usb c to mini display adaptor you can recommend me in the market right now? Thanks in advance!
Just a reminder if you‘re using the LED Cinema Display as a secondary monitor with newer iMac and also for the Mac Mini (mostly the newer ones with the TB3 and TB4 input) it also counts with MacBooks. It doesn‘t work using the TB3 to TB2 adapter while the Mini DisplayPort needs power delivery. Which could be the reason that the Mini Displayport to USB C aren‘t powerful enough in order to show the display. So to getting working the display. You need a Dockingstation. That the LED Cinema Display can show the screen thru the dock. However they are not cheap, it costing like 130 to 400 bucks. Depending on the qualities and brands. It‘s somewhat pricey to get the Dockingstation. Some few Dockingstation has a Mini Displayport input or if it doesn’t, you could technically use a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort Adapter if the Dockingstation has only the Standard DisplayPort. If you‘re using the Thunderbolt Display, you don‘t need a Dockingstation if you‘re straight up using a Thunderbolt adapter. But nice comparision btw. I could think the Mac Studio looks smooth to the resolution of the display. But i‘ll prefer the LED Cinema Display, because they aren‘t expensive and it‘s timelessly usable atleast. So i‘m happy to getting the 27 inch LED Cinema Display by using it.
Update: you don‘t need actually a Dockingstation. You can actually use a HDMI to Displayport adapter (with the USB for power delievery) then plugging a Display to Mini Displayport adapter and then you have a working Cinema Display. Source ruclips.net/video/JJ4xQuhH5Qo/видео.html

Thanks, Diego! Glad you enjoyed. It should be possible to connect it. Have you tried the adapter I use in the video connecting to my laptop? ruclips.net/video/SzZHdyRJkws/видео.html
There’s probably displays with much higher refresh rates and more accurate colors for around the same price as a Cinema Display. Modern gaming monitors are pretty sweet. Def make some comparisons on your own before you commit.
Great Video Taylor. For the old one, from 2010 it comes with An 3 external calle one usb one for charging and the other one as small box. What is the name of that cable? I have An adapter that gets hmdi but not that small square

Is Apple Thunderbolt Display really work well together with M1 Mac? I have read that this display has flickering issue. Is this error fixed in latest updates?
I can't speak for the experience with the Thunderbolt display as I have the Cinema Display with a MiniDP connector but the Cinema Display works great with no flicker.
Great comparison! My cinema display always turns on first when I have logged on. If the Mac is still on log in screen and I haven't typed in password the apple cinema display is black. Is it perhaps a setting och does the display need an update? Thanks!
Can't say for sure, but from what you describe, it sounds like it's waking quickly and sleeping when not in use. So, could just be a normal power function of the monitor. Maybe find some more research to get a better determination and let us know what you find out.
I have two TB displays. Together they cost a third of the price of the studio display. I can daisy chain them. They have thunderbolt 2, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet
Not sure on that one, y’all. The display requires a lot of bandwidth and it would be interesting to see if something like that would work to use a pre-2016 Mac with the Studio Display.
I just have ONE question..why can't we get a switch to switch between using two Macs and ONE monitor??? Studio display, Thunderbolt Display, Pro XDR or otherwise??? Does it exist??
@@TaylorBrauer I've been looking everywhere for the last few days and am finding NOTHING. The same would be for folks using all the new monitors too... there's only ONE input on all these new apple monitors. All kinds of KVM switches.. most have display port or hdmi outputs and that doesn't not play with thunderbolt. I just kinda can't believe no one else is using more than one Mac at a time. I switch back and forth between two Macs all the time, but have so far only had pc type monitors with multiple inputs. anyways.. just thought it was REALLY strange issue!
I can't seem to get my thunderbolt display to work with my MacBook pro M1 Pro? I have the thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adaptor, but no luck - any tips?
Not sure, Chris. Perhaps experiment with different cables and see which one works. Sometimes these older devices just act a bit finicky with newer hardware.
@@TaylorBrauer Yeah, its a weird one. i am using all apple cables and connectors, and have tired a few but nothing. I think it might be software related maybe?

Apple needs to make a “Studio Display Air” at $999. They are leaving so much money on the table from regular users who think (and rightly so) that $1,600 for a monitor is absurd.
That would be really cool to see. They do such a good display that it would be nice if they really had some compeling options that didn't cost a kidney. Having a tandem OLED standalone display for $1600 might be worth it though.
Hey… I’m having some low range bass distortion on my studio display speakers. Out of the box! Vocals and most audio sounds terrific but when the bass kicks in a few songs, the thump sounds like a torn drum 🥁 even at half volume. The same songs at same settings are sounding amazing on my 24” M1 iMac. These displays are not even available on display at the physical stores, where I live, to go and double check if it’s widespread or something that’s normal. Could you please check on your studio display? Apple Music Equaliser Preamp in neutral Rock setting Apple Music preferences Sound enhancer Slider at 3/4th Thanks indeed 🥃
Having the mic too close to the monitor makes the Studio Display sound “phasey”. Being that it has more speakers, at that distance you are going to have that problem.
I just got an LED cinema display for free from a friend who said it didn't work. Got a mini DisplayPort to USB-C adapter and it worked just fine for my laptop, feel like I scammed my friend since it'll make a nice second monitor for my laptop while I"m home.
One thing I never quite understood. The 5K iMac's default screen resolution setting is 2560x1440 so is anyone really using the 5K? Looking to maybe get a M2 mac mini with and old Thunderbolt display if the 27 inch iMac is truly extinct now.
It's true the OS will tell you it's 2560x1440 but it's scaling a 5k image to 2560x1440. It's not reducing pixel count, it's increasing UI sizing. 1:1 scaling of 5k on 27" you'd have to be really close to see anything as the whole UI would be tiny.
Short answer: No, of course not. 😂 Long answer: Absolutely not unless your Mac is too old to have USB-C, then sure, kind of hard to say the new one is better when you can't even plug it in.
The Studio Display has a 5K display and an iPhone 11 inside. It also has the expensive Thunderbolt technology and the faster transfer speed of the three USB-C ports (10 Gbit/s). That explains the price.

Great video, man! I'm trying to connect my Led cinema displays with minidisplayport to my mac studio with m1max, do you know if it's possible? Ive tried a couple of adapters but they don't seem to work. Appreciate the time and love you put into this, good luck!
Thanks, Diego! Glad you enjoyed. It should be possible to connect it. Have you tried the adapter I use in the video connecting to my laptop? ruclips.net/video/SzZHdyRJkws/видео.html
Should i buy cinema display for gaming?
There’s probably displays with much higher refresh rates and more accurate colors for around the same price as a Cinema Display. Modern gaming monitors are pretty sweet. Def make some comparisons on your own before you commit.
Great Video Taylor. For the old one, from 2010 it comes with An 3 external calle one usb one for charging and the other one as small box. What is the name of that cable? I have An adapter that gets hmdi but not that small square
Thank you! That's mini DisplayPort.
@@TaylorBrauer thanks fo the reply. I have the Display led. The old one, I have a question. is it ok that the display get warm especially in the bottom part? Hope you have one to give me an answer
@@ivanzq21 My display also gets warm.
My only problem for me is the 12ms response time in the cinema display i think it will be very blurry ? do you feel that the mouse pointer movement & windows movement blurry ?
With everyday use it's fine. Gaming isn't going to be smooth but that's about it.
@@TaylorBrauer have you tested something like that with the cinema display ?

Nice! That's a great setup. The daisy chaining feature is something I wish the Studio Display had.
@@TaylorBrauer going to purchase a 2013 Mac Pro soon. My dream setup from 2013 is now affordable in 2022 lol
@@MFEeee Hell yeah, Mike! The Mac Pro was and still is a beautiful machine. Let us know how you like it when you get it.
@@TaylorBrauer will do! Thank you!
Would the thunderbolt 2-3 adapter work with this display ?
Not sure on that one, y’all. The display requires a lot of bandwidth and it would be interesting to see if something like that would work to use a pre-2016 Mac with the Studio Display.
I just have ONE question..why can't we get a switch to switch between using two Macs and ONE monitor??? Studio display, Thunderbolt Display, Pro XDR or otherwise??? Does it exist??
There's KVM switches that accomplish that I'm sure. Where to start...I have no idea.
I switch back and forth between two Macs all the time, but have so far only had pc type monitors with multiple inputs. anyways.. just thought it was REALLY strange issue!
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015 is there a way I can add my apple Mac lap top to this display 27-inch (5120 × 2880)
@@chrisdunderdale I have M2 Pro and it works perfectly. You might have a bad cable?
@@ghost-user559 it’s really weird, because it works fine with my MBP 2013 with TB2, and I’ve tried 2 different TB3 -> TB2 adaptors with no luck. I’m giving up and buying an LG superfine
Thw cinema display seems to have a significant reflections compare to studio displays?
Apple needs to make a “Studio Display Air” at $999. They are leaving so much money on the table from regular users who think (and rightly so) that $1,600 for a monitor is absurd.
That would be really cool to see. They do such a good display that it would be nice if they really had some compeling options that didn't cost a kidney. Having a tandem OLED standalone display for $1600 might be worth it though.
Hey…
I’m having some low range bass distortion on my studio display speakers.
Apple Music Equaliser
Preamp in neutral
Rock setting
Apple Music preferences
Sound enhancer
Slider at 3/4th
Thanks indeed 🥃
Oh no! I tried those settings on mine, although I didn't set the preamp, and to my ears, the bass sounds rich and punchy.
@@TaylorBrauer thanks so much for your reply. Thanks indeed. I’ll try to deselect preamp and check once again.

I have several Cinema Displays and love the quality and value.
Not too many differences in my opinion. For most users the $200 cinema display seems like enough
The Cinema display is very appealing still.
when you sleep your macbook and press any buttion, that monitor instantly wakes up??
I love my Cinema Display. In my opinion it’s better looking and definitely Steve Jobs era Apple.
The design language is so timeless. The display was so ahead of it's time in every aspect.
@@TaylorBrauer I definitely agree! The display still looks modern even for today.
Having the mic too close to the monitor makes the Studio Display sound “phasey”. Being that it has more speakers, at that distance you are going to have that problem.
I would rather just get a 5K iMac Pro. Best speakers, best webcam, best microphone quality. And the computer is inside of the display.
I just got an LED cinema display for free from a friend who said it didn't work. Got a mini DisplayPort to USB-C adapter and it worked just fine for my laptop, feel like I scammed my friend since it'll make a nice second monitor for my laptop while I"m home.
Oh wow, that’s pretty awesome. Enjoy!
Cost=good / specs=bad = Cinema Display decent
Cute
One thing I never quite understood. The 5K iMac's default screen resolution setting is 2560x1440 so is anyone really using the 5K? Looking to maybe get a M2 mac mini with and old Thunderbolt display if the 27 inch iMac is truly extinct now.
It's true the OS will tell you it's 2560x1440 but it's scaling a 5k image to 2560x1440. It's not reducing pixel count, it's increasing UI sizing. 1:1 scaling of 5k on 27" you'd have to be really close to see anything as the whole UI would be tiny.
@@TaylorBrauer Thanks for the explanation. I've set my iMac to 5K and couldn't see anything and thought who uses this?
Short answer: No, of course not. 😂
Long answer: Absolutely not unless your Mac is too old to have USB-C, then sure, kind of hard to say the new one is better when you can't even plug it in.
The Studio Display has a 5K display and an iPhone 11 inside. It also has the expensive Thunderbolt technology and the faster transfer speed of the three USB-C ports (10 Gbit/s). That explains the price.
So, your dad bought himself a lot of gear and you pose with it as it was yours? 😅
lol, nah man. idk where you got that idea.
