I still can't rave enough about Johnathan being a real life actual sceptical fan. Normally that's the expectation for any reviewer, but the Apple space lacks this SEVERELY. Keep up the good work man. And that single USB C idea, that is gold!!
This a thousand times. Some people say of us, Apple users that we are part of a cult or something. I always want to say no. But then I watch some Apple oriented channels or listen to some fanboys, and I feel like.... yeeah, maybe I am in a cult.
It's clear he loves Apple's product history, which is a great place to start from. I don't use any Apple products, but Mac Address is the one Apple oriented channel I'll come to and it's only because of Jonathan.
How does the Apple tech community lack skeptical fans lol. You're right, it lacks skeptical 'fans', but the Apple "community" is a perfect example of a group that contains two extremes: people that swear by Apple, and people that despise Apple. And I hate that. I hate the fanboys that will make up excuses as they go to defend every decision Apple makes, and I hate the haters hating everyone, be it fanboys or normal people or "skeptical fans", that uses Apple products and thinking they're the reason the world is screwed, and spreading toxic misinformation about Apple and its users everywhere. Why can't we find our way in the middle? Is it because people feel special when they feel like they're in a niche group with strong opinions? If yes, everyone urgently needs to look at themselves in the mirror and judge their values. Also, liking a company isn't necessarily always a bad thing. I prefer Apple products most of the time because I like the designers' and engineers' vision working there, therefore I have an inherent bias towards Apple products. But I try to hold other companies to the same standard. As long as you do that, and not alter your expectations based on what company's product you're looking at, you're good. At least that's my perspective.
He is doing such a fantastic job with this channel. Linus really did hire the right man for the job with this channel. Give this man a raise … again if he hasn’t already.
agreed. he is apple through and through, but he's not a fanboi. he will openly admit when things suck, and look elsewhere for alternatives, as one should. and his screen presence is pleasing and engaging. he does a damn fine job
@@jaughnekow idk if that would have the same appeal. Almost everyone is an Android jerker on the tech side and most android stuff is covered on LTT or short circuit
Really love that Jonathan is an Apple fan that's willing to hold the company to account. Very few in this space will. I was ready to pull the trigger on this monitor when it was revealed, but when I realized it didn't have ProMotion or miniLED, I immediately held off. Once I realized Thunderbolt 4 didn't have the bandwidth to support 120Hz 5K, I realized I probably wasn't gonna upgrade my monitor for a loooong time. Thunderbolt 5, and a replacement for my Mac Studio to actually handle the eventual ProMotion 5-6K display in god knows how long.
Unrelated but I just noticed that "ProMotion" is not only a generic promotion name for a feature used by apple, but it's literally the word "promotion", and it started bothering me. More related to your comment, this display is quite generic in usage features (that is, excluding the couple of gimmicks added to it). It really doesn't make you go "I know I don't need it, but buying this for sure would be nice..." like M1 macs were, for example. While there's not many 5K monitors out there, it doesn't mean that they shouldn't at least be somewhat competitive within the market. Had Apple kept the momentum going with exciting products in all ranges, I'd probably be looking forward to their new releases instead of being cautious.
@@wta1518 I'd been using a 32" 1440p display for a good while before my friend upgraded to a Studio display and gave me his LG Ultrafine 5K. The massive pixel density increase is great, but yeah. 1440p is more than enough to get you by.
@@wta1518 hard disagree, absolutely there is a lot of benefit to 4k and beyond at this size, maybe not for gaming, but for graphic design, extended text reading. I mean, we have screens on our phones that have that resolution at this point
This has cemented Horst as the best Apple reviewer in my mind. Perfectly able to appreciate what makes Apple products good while sprinkling enough salt and shade into the review by explaining exactly how it could be better. He doesn't praise them like a cult member or vilify them like Linus sometimes can (for good reason but still).
Despite not being an Apple guy at all (though the m1/m2 macbooks I've had my eye on for a while), I enjoy your content quite a bit! I like the general presentation and flow of the videos you put out. Also, no offense, but you look like the EXACT stereotype of someone who'd own everything Apple to me and I can't think of anything more fitting.
I'm not an Apple guy either, but when looking for a small and power efficient laptop last year I couldn't find anything better than an M1 Macbook air. Using it with platform agnostic software (Firefox, MS Office, Affinity Suite, etc.) and I don't even feel the inclination to buy in to Apple's ecosystem. One feature absent on PC laptops that I have found oddly useful is the ability to completely turn off the display backlight, which saves battery when you only need audio, and is especially useful when connected to a TV as a home theater player in a dark room (the noise-free fanless cooling is also ideal for this use case).
@@Bayonet1809 How are you using the trackpad from across the room when it's being used as a home theater machine? Also, regardless of that, you can just set a non-Mac to only use the connected display and not the built in one, which will completely turn off laptop's built in display. I just did that the other day for watching a movie.
He is fan of Apple products but very objective about it. Which is great since yeah many other reviews who do like Apple products (which is nothing wrong for liking them) are leaning a bit too "fanboy/fangirl" in some ways.
@@kornkernel2232 Exactly, I love that objectivity about him. You can acknowledge that your favorite company screw up! That doesn't make them bad, it makes them human!
WOW. Although I'm a regular LTT viewer, I'm also a PC user, so this may be my first Mac Address video... it feels so different! The editing, the writing, and the cinematography has such a different tone and pacing from the other LMG channels. The whole video is very sleek and polished -- it feels analogous to the industrial design of Apple products themselves. Great job!
I picked up the LG UltraFine 5k about 16 months ago. I really love the display, not the design so much though. However, the issue is now I have realized how much I like high DPI with a glossy display. I was excited when Apple announced this monitor, but the price for essentially the same display quickly turned me off. However, I was testing it out at a Microcenter and the Apple store the other day, those speakers are some kinda witchcraft. Apple did a great job with that for sure! Probably won't be picking one of these up though until the price (hopefully) comes down.
Apple's desktop lineup (including accessories) seems as though it has been assigned to a team that has spent years working in the mobile space. They're spending lots of time solving tough engineering challenges to improve space efficiencies when space efficiencies are not the areas in most need of improvement.
I’am writing this on a Studio display and would agree with most of what you said, but I have to say that after using a 27” iMac with a 5k monitor the Studio display is considerably better. It has better blacks, colour and brightness. Compared to the cost of a 4k monitor it seems very expensive, but it is 5k. Add excellent speakers and superb build quality a reasonable quality mike and webcam and it starts to look better value. So don’t be put off by some of the reviews on this monitor, I nearly was, but I’m very pleased I wasn’t.
As another skeptical fan who has a love / hate relationship with Apple, I’m happy to see LMG keep Mac Address going and with its own unique vibe apart from LTT.
I have been pretty much extorted into using one as the software I use for work doesn't work with 4K scaling, so I'm basically forced to use a 1440p or 5K display and between the still expensive but cheaply made LG Ultrafine and the studio display, I have gotten the latter. I wish there were more 5K panels available to choose from, but I can only see the studio display and the LG Ultrafine. I accepted the expense for my work and I'm moving on. I have gotten the vesa option though, as it's the one that makes the most sense anyway. even if it obscures the apple logo. As much as I love apple designs, I'm more interested in the functionality of products.
@@aninditabasak7694 It's also not even close to being comparable specswise. The pro display XDR is one of the best prosumer displays on the market and excellent for HDR. The Apple studio display can't do the same thing, the base panel they use is just not that great, being the same 5k panel from the LG ultrafine. Basically it can't do what the pro display XDR does, and so that makes it even harder to justify.
The Pro Display XDR is still a bargain for the people who need to use it - it’s competing directly against monitors that cost $30,000 and holding its own. But I would dearly love to see something more like it for a lot less than it costs.
@@babybirdhome The pro display XDR is literally nothing like those $30,000 monitors though. Most of them are either dual-stacked OLEDS (Which just finally appeared in the ipad pro) Or they are dual stacked LCD's (one color panel, one monochrome) for proper 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Apple just uses a cheap 1,000:1 contrast ratio panel with a subpar 576 miniLED backlight to create the illusion of real contrast. Apple uses what they would call a "dynamic contrast ratio" to achieve its contrast. When comparing static contrast ratios, you are getting at best around a 1500:1 static contrast ratio, compared to 1,000,000:1 static contrast ratio on actual professional reference monitors. It also doesn't seem to have any real coverage of the BT-2020 color gamut either, which is probably one of the most high end HDR color gamuts out there (covers more than DCI-P3). Even my $600 Innocn 27m2v has double the local dimming zones of the pro display XDR, with more BT2020 coverage and 4k resolution for 1/10'th the price. If anything the pro display XDR illustrates how apple can make hardware that is super overpriced, and make it seem like a good deal by comparing it to a product that is out of its league.
I'm an Apple Mac user day in day out and I do have the Huawei Mateview as my sole monitor in my set up. I've always said it's a great and affordable alternative to the studio display for all the reasons you said too. You're the first channel I've seen that's given it this praise it deserves. New subscriber.
I’ve been using the studio display for a weeks now and I love it. It replaced my 5k iMac quite well. Having said that, I think it’s overpriced. It’s worth the $300 over the LG, but the LG isn’t worth the $1300.
I have also owned the studio display for weeks and I agree 100% with you. I love the monitor but its overpriced. My USB hub on the back of the monitor has started randomly freezing (currently being worked on by Apple) other than that its been good.
The LG was available for most of its life discounted to like $960. The fact you can get a 5K iMac used with a pretty decent computer attached for 1/3rd the cost of the display only is pretty absurd. The raw LG panel can be found on alibaba for $300, it’s not fancy tech anymore.
I think it's expensive. I also think there's nothing better than it for what I want from my monitor, which is why I bought it, whereas the LG was honestly hard to justify at $1300 because I had issues with it. I'm amazed that Windows users apparently don't want this kind of combination of convenience/performance/quality of life features from their monitors, but I do suppose TB isn't particularly valued in Windows world currently (considering AMD doesn't have it), so it doesn't make sense to have monitors built around features that probably require a TB interface. Anyway, I would love there to be a $999 option, but there isn't anything comparable at the moment. Every time I see someone say, "but this 4K monitor is better," I'm like, yeah, not really. 5K is a lot more pixels than 4K. You can't just throw away 44% of pixels and pretend you've kept the same amount of features.
@@mbvglider Yes, 5K is better than 4K for productivity. I imagine that Apple and LG have some sort of exclusivity agreement on that panel. It’s weird, the previous 27” iMac/Cinema Display’s 1440p panel was pretty ubiquitous on other much cheaper products - tons of Korean brand displays used it.
This is probably the only channel I actually let the ad section in the video play without skipping. I don't do that in any other LMG channels. :) Love you Johnathan
Great video with very good production value. That said, i don’t understand how you review this monitor and not mention the “importance” of 5K at 27” for macOS scaling and Retina resolution. The people interested in this monitor want (require) Retina. That’s the whole point. I agree that the ASD is maybe a bit overpriced. But it’s only $300 more than the LG and you get Apple build quality, webcam and awesome speakers. Your alternative monitor is 168 PPI. Not comparable IMHO.
Wow the stutter on the webcam was awful. Regardless of the image quality, having it consistently drop several frames a few times a second is just completely unacceptable.
Let me tell you the best in class use case. Back in 2015 I bought an Intel Macbook pro 15 inch on an in store deal for approx 1950. Back then, I needed portability due to the way the tech world was with office work and client visits. in 2020 we had the pandemic, and the world changed where we could work remotely, in fact it was encouraged. All of a sudden I could comfortably get by with having desktop. I then sold my 2015 Intel Macbook pro for 500 to a DJ. I bought an M1 Mac Mini for 550 and a used like new 32 inch AOC 4k monitor for 350. I had vouchers from work on Amazon as a bonus and used that to buy a Keychron keyboard, a Logitech MX Master and a Dprofy soundbar. Honestly, I have no intention to change for a good while no matter how many events Apple has. That is how you get the optimum out of Apple without spending too much. I am a Product Designer, and I am pro already Apple - just ask my salary. Please don't spend money you don't have to.
I was hoping WWDC would provide some feature bumps for the apple display from the software side, something to make use of the onboard chip & storage. Something that would have made this monitor justifiable.
I still use both the 27in thunderbolt display at work and I have my mother using one at her work as well. To me that was peak apple display tech. They wont ever beat what those had.
I've been using the Huawei Mateview on my Mac Studio and I love it! Just wish it didn't have that extra tiny chin space - so close! [love it except how apple defaults to subsampling the pixels making the picture quality a complete mess and you have to edit system files to force RGB mode which took me months to figure out] but other than that, I would definitely buy two more of these to have an awesome triple monitor setup [if anyone wants help making it work correctly reply to this comment and I'll help, I feel morally obligated after the pain I experienced]
@@aleksandarkikivideos look up “force RGB mode on M1 macs” and the thumbnail has a mac mini on it, the part that isn’t explained is that if there are multiple UUIDs in the file you have to copy the same settings to each one or it won’t work since they don’t include them, which is why it took me months to figure out, and if editing the normal windowserver file doesn’t work there is a PER USER windowserver override file that you should delete, it’s the same thing but for each specific user info about this is criminally scarce
I have that monitor (currently running on windows) but I will switch to mac soon. What happens if you don't allow RGB mode in the system files? Does it run in DCI-P3 without modifications? And what is the subsampling problem you talked about and can it be fixed?
@@loki.8435 not 100% sure but I think they reason they killed is because of how the new iMac screens are made. they can't actually do it. Target Display Mode was dropped because the 5K iMac requires a custom timing controller to drive the display at 60Hz and TDM does not work with that controller. Apparently Luna display offers this functionality so that might be worth checking out.
Loved the take. Great monitor, too expensive. Compare it to a 24 inch iMac and max mini, and a old 27 inch iMac and you see it costs too much. I’d price it at 800. Look at the 1500 dollar iMac vs a Mac mini with Touch ID keyboard and mouse. The difference is only 550, so with the display and display assembly, maybe like 700-900 dollars this thing should cost.
I haven’t tried it myself but the samsung m8 seems like a great monitor. It’s modern and the smart tv feature could work well in student bedrooms where buying a tv may not be the best use of money.
Love this take on the Studio Display. Even in Apples own ecosystem it's not enough. My monitor is the thing I probably look at the the most in my life. So it looks nice, and is pretty good. It's "expensive" at 900 euros, but I think that's worth it. 1800 for conventional use is stupid.
The quality of this video blows me out of the water. In depth, thoughtful, and beautifully presented. I would love to see a documentary by the Mac Address team.
I bought the Huawei Mateview for 430€ (450USD). It's such a great value. The only thing I dislike are the not so good blacks and and a lacking backlight uniformity at the right side of the display.
Personally, what I would've liked to see on this screen: - Mini-LED - HDMI 2.1 port - Multiple Thunderbolt 4 ports - At least 120Hz - Removable power cable - Height adjustable stand as a standard
@@Jossages My only hold up on that would be the 4k resolution. Means for a true 2:1 retina resolution I'd only get the equivalent of 1080p screen real estate. Pushing to 1440p wouldn't be pixel to pixel pure and causes some fuzziness.
@@grumpychocobo Yeah that's the main (only?) downside vs the XDR, personally have no idea about scaling on macOS, just mentioned it since it has most of the features you and Nathanael wanted and wasn't sure if you'd heard about it.
I've always gone for the biggest screen I can afford, back to the CRT days (that Sony one a few LTT episodes back, for example). Since we started getting LCD TVs at reasonable prices around 2005-6, I've maxed it out to a target price. This takes me to now, where I have a 65" LG OLED on an adjustable mount, bolted to the wall, with my desk in front of it. Why anyone would spend so much more for so much less screen real estate, unless they just can't fit it in their office, makes me shrug. I always heard "no one needs a screen that big", but eventually everyone does! I've had Macs since the Mac Plus, but I have never owned a Mac standalone monitor, and never will. But hey, some people like the complete package and this fills that gap. Only sales figures will determine what the next round of Apple monitors look like. (edits for typos)
i mean, this monitor is still gonna be much more colour accurate. It isn't oled so no burn in, and it is also 5k instead of 4k. Along with that this is also apple directly which means better compatibility with mac. This is made for a different purpose than that 65" oled. They just aren't comparable.
Because screen size is not the only factor in buying a monitor for many users, especially those with $1000+ budgets. Color accuracy, response time, bit depth, display finish, i/o options, etc are all factors. The Apple display IS wildly overpriced for what it is, but to simplify it down to just screen size is missing a big chunk of the buying decision.
@@toxicturkeyy actually the Studio Display isn't much more color accurate than LG OLED TVs, but the quality control is tighter due to OLED being quirky. But yeah, no burn in, 5k, Apple's ecosystem convenience and different use cases. Still an awful value tho
@@RLfilmz your comment made me realize the Studio Display is even worse than I thought. Great color accuracy, gamut, brightness and image quality in general, but that's the minimum expected on its price tier. No HDR, local dimming, 8 bit panel, 60Hz so standard refresh rate, response time and input lag, bad webcam, mediocre mics, decent speakers, great display finish but that isn't gamechanger, great I/O, resolution (not that most people would be sensitive about 2K or 4K vs 5K) and I think that's it. So, great I/O and resolution, the rest is minor (e.g. display finish), or the bare minimum (color accurate, P3 gamut), or below its tier (no local dimming, HDR, et cetera). Damn, what a disappointment.
My alternative pick for the studio display was getting a little savvy by gutting a 5k 2017 imac, and sealing it back up with a driver board that essentially converts it into a standard monitor. Not only that, I was able to sell the leftover parts. Overall, saved a lot of money this way.
As much as I love these videos, why are they released so late? The Studio Display came out 3 months ago. It was a similar story with the iPhone SE video a few weeks back. I love Horst’s takes on these products, but potentially people have already bought them and have experienced the flaws for themselves by the time these videos are released.
I guess, but personally I think it's a bad idea to buy a brand new product such a short time after its release anyway - no matter what the objective pros and cons of it are, it couldn't hurt to wait at least a few months to allow the manufacturer to sort out the Rev. A bugs.
The average apple fan and regular consumers will not even watch this or any video. This is more for the tech enthusiasts, but focused on Mac. Having it earlier is fine but probably does not matter much.
This channel fills such an important niche! Jonathan’s presentation is impeccable - a truly open-minded review of apple products without sucking down the koolaid!
I saw it in Apple Store recently and was shocked how thick the bezels still are. Monitor is also quite thick. Nice looking, but not really spectacular.
Hey Jonathon! Great insights and I share your frustrations with this monitor price bracket from Apple. I picked up a Vesa mount studio display to pair with my 16” m1 pro machine. As a photographer, I really do benefit from extra pixels to review my images in 1:1 display ratio. I’m happy with its clean aesthetic, color profiles from software, webcam for zooms, and the speakers are amazing. The short TB4 cable included is frustrating. I would’ve been happy to pay 2k -3k for a mini led display with all the existing features and a removable power cable. I nearly went for the asus pro art series, but fell in love with the clean aesthetic of the studio display. I decided to keep it, begrudgingly.
I have the VESA mount Studio Display and it is glorious! I don’t regret it at all. My job requires reading and writing all day and the text has never been sharper. It’s also lightning fast when connected to my M1 MBP. Video conferencing looks great with the firmware update. Sound is not outstanding but good enough to forgo speakers. When you combine it all together I think it’s worth the price.
I just picked up a 48” LG c1 OLED for $899 and it’s amazing. Even the sound blew me away. Yes the studio display has a (crap) webcam and some ports but I have a thunderbolt dock and a MBP M1 Max so that’s not an issue. The value just isn’t there with the Studio Display and though that isn’t that odd for Apple it’s really out whack with this display.
Definitely putting this and the Sony Bravia on my list for replacement monitors. Bigger screen, bigger text, little further viewing distance seems like a good trade off to me.
I have an 55" C1 OLED in the bedroom and a Studio Display on my desk, and I honestly think the C1 has terrible sound, lol. I think my 14" MBP has better built-in speakers. Great picture on the C1, though, but honestly, I don't think the two can even be compared. Some people want to sit right in front of a high-DPI monitor and some people want to be far from a large low-dpi screen. For me, having to get a TV remote and being served LG menus every time I want to dock is not a particularly lovely experience, but I understand that other people will tolerate that in their workday. I enjoy both and don't think they necessarily compete with each other.
I really appreciate you pointing out flaws I've not seen other youtubers cover. Like the Vesa mount covering the apple logo, or the shortness of the TB cable it includes.
I just want to add: I got this monitor recently and they had a firmware update. It DRASTICALLY improved the camera. It also needs some more lighting which makes a big difference. Solved my issues!
This display is just an apalling value proposition. The only reason it exists is to wrung out money from customers who forget there are other options than those listed on the Apple Store. Thw fact that its 200$ less than an entire iMac with the same display is baffling. Not to mention the oxymoronic mounting mechanism that looks apalling when adapted to VESA, but not being available with a rotating mount. Apple shot themselves in the foot, REPEATEDLY, with this one. Its like three or four different teams designed the display individually with no cooperation whatsoever and costing 4 times as much to Apple, hence the elevated pricetag.
It is not the same display if you look at the part number it is an entirely new display I forget which RUclipsr pointed this out but it is something a lot of people get wrong it is a completely new display. The stand issues is frustrating to say the least and personally I really wish they had an option without the camera. The fact is you can get 3 monitors with this pixel density a 5k LG (which is a plastic monstrosity with 6 year old panel technology that should have been revamped by LG by now) or 5K from Apple or a 6k Apple display that is $5000. I don’t understand the plug not being removable, height adjustability not being their is stupid, and again webcam is useless to me personally. BUT when you get down to it we are talking $300 between the Lg and studio display and I would say the aluminum alone has to eat up some of that cost, better glass on the front, newer panel, better speakers, the fact that the A13 can be utilized in the future for cool stuff like airplay to me makes that $300 easier to understand.
People will be hooking this thing up to MacBooks too - and I'd _really_ hate to have the display drawing that much power through the Macbook's logic board. The problem with most other displays is that they're 4K which means a 2:1 scaled resolution (for razor sharp text) brings you down to 1080p resolution. Other target resolutions are possible, but yield a much blurrier anti-aliased mess. Smoothing through blurriness doesn't work well for text. I don't own one of these - my current goto Macs are a pretty well loaded 2020 iMac 5K and a 2021 16" MacBook Pro - but unless Apple comes out with a better compromise display - perhaps with mini or micro LED - my next machine will probably have one. I find the 5K display with 2:1 text scaling offers really sharp text combined with great graphics fidelity, and the Studio Display's features compliment the fact that the iMac 5K no longer exists and offers audio and camera options dropped by the 5K's disappearance from the lineup.
Eve spectrum is a wonderful substitute for the Studio Display. It’s 4k, 144hz, Colour Accurate, Really well designed, and has a usb hub with daisy chain capabilities. Price? $800
I upgraded my monitor from SAMSUNG Odyssey G5 34" Ultrawide to LG Ultrawide 5K2K 40". Although it's quite expensive, it meets all my need perfectly. Enough workspace for editing videos and voice recording. An awesome canvas for RUclips consuming and movie watching when I got no space for a larger TV to put in my room. Also, match with MacOS and can enable HI-DPI to do some scaling is gorgeous.
Honestly, why not just wait for the rumored miniLED display? It’d be better for creative work anyway. Also, is that the same Studio Display that Linus yanked the cable off of on WAN Show?
I think apple have signified miniLED as a “pro” feature now. If they did release a miniLED display, it would be a replacement to the pro display xdr, not the studio display. Remember, Apple tends to operate outside of general industry trends, just because prices on non-apple miniLED displays has dropped, that won’t necessarily carry over to apple.
Some people (like me, web developer, mostly backend) don't do creative work but they would like to have a nice monitor on their desk anyway. The Studio Display is a very nice monitor and it technically is way more enough for those people. The price though is unjustifiable. The rumored miniLED? It will be even more expensive. Thanks Apple, I guess I'll keep with my plasticky crappy Dell from 2016.
I cannot believe I had not discovered this channel till now. Assuming you write these reviews and segments, you are an amazing writer. Fantastic work that actually helps me make informed decisions.
You're the only Apple oriented YT channel I'm subscribed to because most of the others can't seem to get their noses out of Apple's crack. Pay respect when respect is due, but not everything a company does is good and that's what I love most about this channel. I knew Linus would hold you up to that! Great channel :) Great work :) Keep it up! And may the Apple Assassins not find you any time soon ;) haha.
It goes both ways really. I see Apple channels that worship them...and I see the ones where no matter what Apple does, they can do nothing but wrong. So hard to find balanced Apple information.
@@grumpychocobo Is it possible that it's because it's all smoke and mirrors, and that for less than half the cost you can have a machine that runs as well, if not better - despite their damnably good tablets and phones!
@@Blitterbug stop trying to start drama. I was obviously just pointing out that Apple is polarizing in how it has it's rabid fans, but it also has it's rabid haters, and that it's hard to find those who don't turn their "reviews" into tech propaganda.
I'm rocking 2 30 inch cinema displays. loves these guys. and other than them not having any passive cooing, so they radiate a lot of heat out to you. they look amazing. and still going strong. as long as you can get your adapters to play nicely.
Some Apple stuff is awesome - the M1 MBA that I got for $899 has been amazing for the price, and my Airpods Pro were a bit pricey but solid. And then there's stuff like this... I'm sure there's people out there that are happy with their Studio Displays, but it's hard to come to another conclusion other than that it's expensive and unimpressive.
Just wanted to say thank you for quite a few of your content I have been watching that helped me to pick a Macbook Pro and an iPad for my loved ones. Thanks again.
For me it’s always been function over form. So if I can have 2x 4K monitors, decent webcam and good speakers for the price of one of these displays. The chose is made. I work in a studio (13 designers) where we all have a dual monitor setup. Imagine buying everyone an height adjustable monitor for… €2239,00, which is the price here.
Get one for the house then? At least try it in the store if you can. It’s a luxury professional purchase. Like many things you can get by with less, but you would also benefit from it as well.
@@DarkPa1adin Even my $600 Inncon 27m2v for a quarter the price, comes with a factory calibration very close to what apple offers. You can also just grab an xrite or datacolor spyder and calibrate the monitors yourself too.
The big thing drawing me to the Apple Studio Display is just the build quality. You can see it in the Huawei monitor, the screens shakes a lot when the desk shakes a bit. My LG 5k also has that problem when I'm typing pretty hard which is annoying.
I always try to convince friends upgrading their computer setup that their monitor is the most important part of the computing experience. it doesn't matter how fast the system is, if the monitor is bad, the experience will be worse for it.
Something that no one talks about is that alternative monitors need to be a specific resolution to not have their gpu bogged down by gpu resolution scaling. You cannot and should never buy a 4k monitor unless it is huge. Resolutions that scale at average size are 1440 monitors or if you get a 34”+ monitor, 1600 horz resolution, and that’s it. Macs are designed to work natively at retina resolutions. You need a monitor that works natively at half that resolution or your gpu gets blasted scaling your resolution. Don’t trust anyone who recommends a 4k monitor. They have no idea what they are talking about.
Or maybe a 4k monitor that is 32" or 34" and keep it at native resolution. It will be small for the text for some people, but the screen space it offers it may be great. A 4k 32" monitor it will be around 140ppi, what I'm not sure if this will be enough to have good clarity and not see the pixels.
Riley looking annoyed at Jonathan at 7:26 is enough to justify watching the whole video LOL. EDIT: now that I actually watched the whole video: Bravo, I know being an Apple "fanboy" can cloud one's mind but this was a really deep, serious, useful, honest take. You really punched Apple in the guts, pulling out from your pocket actual historical data on why Apple monitors used to be extremely good while this is just... good on paper but unjustifiable in price. Having webcam and speakers is great and all but $1600 is too much. I sincerely don't understand why computer brands can't come up with something as nicely designed as the Studio Display. It's extremely difficult to find a monitor that just looks good on you desk.
@@hollyc5417 I like people calling me names, it's cute to see them try to assert superiority through a message lol. The Studio Display, for all the niceties and extra stuff still is overpriced, no matter how you spin it. I'd happily pay a few extra hundreds for a nicer design, but $1600 is too much. More so, I never said that monitors should have all the features of the Studio, just a better design. They don't even need to be made out of aluminum, I'm just asking for a nice design.
the biggest appeal of the studio display is to use Mac OS at its pixel perfect resolution without scaling. and that alone doesn't exist except for the LG 5K. for my work I'm completely ok paying the extra just for that.
I'm quite happy with the Studio Display (a replacement for my aging Thunderbolt display), despite the shortcomings. 120Hz refresh would have been better, as would proper HDR. The attached (sort of) power cable is a bit silly. A lower price would have been appreciated. Yet those downsides are utterly squashed by the elephant in the room: 5K is critical, not only for retina scaling, but also for working with unscaled 4K content in a window. The higher resolution is something I sorely miss when working on Windows/Linux in a 4K display. Monitors with 5K (or higher) resolutions are simply few and far between. I tried an LG about six months ago and had to return it due to a faulty Thunderbolt port. Not a great impression.
A big thing you probably should have brought up is the pixel scaling issues that come with most monitors in between 1080p and 5k. That's the number 1 reason I've seen people require a 5k monitor. macOS looks good at 100-120 pixels per inch, and 200-220 pixels per inch. Everything not in that pixel density has to be scaled in some way, which can lead to really bad moire and shimmer effects. Marc Edwards wrote up a good post on these problems over on his blog at Bjango.
it can do 4k 60hz 10bit at yuv422 and you won't see any difference compared to yuv444 unless you use a colourimeter, or if you really want yuv444, you can do 4k 10 bit 50hz or 4k 8bit 60hz

This video is perfect for me .... I don't actually care about apple products, at least not in my personal life, but given my job I'm asked for a lot of tech recommendations and most of my end users prefer Mac. Given my tastes most content I've seen about this begin and end with the obvious flaws, and at this point generic throwaway jokes, that are the non-removable power cable and generic apple complaints like hyping new features that have been standard defaults by the competition for years. I only subscribed to this channel for a Mac enthusiast's perspective to help me make recommendations at work, and honestly watching you slowly slip into cynicism makes me enjoy the content more and my job easier. I don't have to translate fanboy rose tinted glasses for apple releasing a new product to real world use and performance. This was especially true with that iPad tier list video, too. I got to see the honest opinions of an apple user on apple products that I know nothing about -- but from someone knowledgeable enough about the tech to find flaws and honest enough to bring them up. (I didn't bring this up under that video because android tablets are a joke and I didn't realize at the time that Samsung was trying to bring competition back) Anyways; love this, love you, not my favorite channel to watch but definitely the most useful for me
I'd love for this video to have came out months ago, yes. But now that we have it, I really, like REALLY appreciate Jonathan's honesty. While other Apple focused channels are like "well, it's expensive but whatever" here Jonathan is digging very deep into the shortcomings (all of them) and he's comparing some of the monitor features with previous Apple monitors so he's not just pulling stuff from thin air, he actually is saying "hey Apple you used to do better, look". I sincerely appreciate his take.
Completely agree & I stand by my original opinion that this was a product designed with the intention of having a 5K ProMotion panel that they couldn’t finish in time.
Oh man, Jonathan’s Mac opinions are on POINT! In addition, the presentation style is sooooo refreshing compared to the frenzied/manic atmosphere that has eclipsed LTT videos as of late.
This monitor is not for the average buyer. It’s for the purist. Like the people that restore cars and have to use period correct parts. Oh no you can’t use a M12 bolt made last year, you have to get one made in the same year as the car, hunt for new old stock and pay out the yazoo. Honestly I can’t blame them, it’s hard to be unique in the monitor space, especially when you don’t make the panels, so good for them for taking profit on their brand strength.
I really wish other manufacturers would make a glossy display like this with an anti-reflective coating. I think that is the primary appeal of this product despite its price and obvious (horrible) flaws. The market is completely devoid of these types of displays and I am honestly surprised no one has stepped in other than Apple (and the LG ultra fine of course)
That MateView immediately captured my heart and then immediately dashed it when I noticed the Huawei logo on the back. Damn you geopolitics! Getting in the way of my dream of large-format square monitors...
For the cables on Huawei you can use those 90 degree angled cables, you need to do a bit of searching to find those "back/forward" angled ones but it's doable.
Hi there, non-apple user but wanted to answer the question you left at the end. Displays to me are one of the most important parts of a computer, whether that is a laptop, standalone pc, phone or otherwise. They decide what conditions you'll use your device in and are a large part of the experience of consuming content. If my phone was dimmer, I wouldn't be able to use it on my way to Uni on some mornings. If my primary monitor was smaller, I'd feel less immersed in the content. I personally don't care about secondary things that I can fix. On my laptop I want a bright screen, good sound volume without sacrificing sound quality, and a full sized keyboard in there for functionality reasons. On my pc I just need a good display from the monitor. The sound quality or volume doesn't affect me because I'll be there for long periods anyway and I will just use headphones and a microphone for a better experience regardless. (I also dislike background noise so I like having headphones personally.) If my screen wasn't bright and colourful, then the content I look at wouldn't feel bright and colourful. If my headphones were crap it wouldn't sound devastating as I listen to Frostpunks OST (highly recommend), if my mouse was inaccurate I would feel the disconnect between myself and the tasks that I am completing. The hardware is fine. I'm at the stage in computing power where I won't particularly notice extra polygons or extra techniques in graphical shading. What I will notice is new methods of displaying it. Linus tried out a QD-OLED and commented specifically on how Golds were produced on the display being so much more convincing, and how on another display technology the reds, greens and blues were lighting the screen properly, not just red tinted whites. That's what'll change my viewing experience for the better. Not an adaptive subsurf on all the models with path-traced graphics because I won't notice many of the differences because that isn't the limiting factor on my experience.
He IS THE Johnathan Appleseed, lol😜
I am not sure what you mean. I've seen a bunch of Apple fans crap on this monitor.
If only apple would hire him… lol. Linus really lucked out scooping him up
I'd imagine he gets paid pretty well, alike all LMG employees.
Maybe he should hire one more for Android device
AndroidAdress
Not to mention that at this screen size you don't really need more than 1440p.

@@Bayonet1809 That's when I just set the laptop to not turn off and close the lid
@@griffin8062 But then one couldn't use the trackpad.
@@Bayonet1809 How are you using the trackpad from across the room when it's being used as a home theater machine? I just did that the other day for watching a movie.
I appreciate you giving us an honest review and not just praising everything Apple does like some other creators.

The cinematic office neighbor stare when putting on the vesa stand had me cracking up. Great video!
That was great, I had to stop there and laugh also.
Good luck on that price. Apple rarely price adjust existing models even years later. It's rather annoying.
It’ll probably come down in a few years
I wish Microsoft would sell the display they used in the Surface Studio. I’d already own one if they did.
@@chidorirasenganz it will not, apple product rarely come down in price
@@neolordie nah they drop the price on stuff all the time. After a redesign, spec bump/newer model it’s common for price to come down
Apple's desktop lineup (including accessories) seems as though it has been assigned to a team that has spent years working in the mobile space.
What software is that? If you don't mind me asking.
Really enjoy that this channel feels different to LTT but is still as high quality and informative as LTT
I wish they just somehow made the Pro XDR display cheaper, but they somehow went backwards. Love Jonathan's presenting as always
Why backwards? It’s far less expensive than the Pro Display XDR and good enough for consumers and even many professionals.
@@babybirdhome Asus have a few models which compete (better for some people, worse for others) with the Pro Display XDR.
PA32UCG, PA32UCX & PA27UCX.
Hi, i am currently looking at this monitor too. Have you tried the dell ultra sharp or lg ultra fine in comparison?
I’ve been using the studio display for a weeks now and I love it. It replaced my 5k iMac quite well. Having said that, I think it’s overpriced. It’s worth the $300 over the LG, but the LG isn’t worth the $1300.
I have also owned the studio display for weeks and I agree 100% with you. I love the monitor but its overpriced. My USB hub on the back of the monitor has started randomly freezing (currently being worked on by Apple) other than that its been good.
THANK YOU! Finally someone else who shares the same belief that "It’s worth the $300 over the LG, but the LG isn’t worth the $1300."
Can we get a fake book with Linus’ pose like steve Jobs on the shelf in the background set?
[love it except how apple defaults to subsampling the pixels making the picture quality a complete mess and you have to edit system files to force RGB mode which took me months to figure out]
but other than that, I would definitely buy two more of these to have an awesome triple monitor setup

They should bring back Target Display Mode, which lets you use an iMac as an external display.
unfortunately they cant with the newer iMacs , but yeah would be great 1
But then people won't upgrade and it would hurt their sales....... the reason they killed it in the first place.

Nice troll
7:26 Never been happier to see Railey😂
Dude I only came down here to find someon else appreciating Railey hahahaha I love it!❤
I have just recently bought a brand new Apple Cinema Display 2005 and am very satisfied with it.
The bezels are large to fit the webcam and be symmetrical

The production on this channel is just amazing...and I feel like that's an understatement
This one was directed and produced by Linus himself! That's awesome
He pointed out the logo being covered up in a YT short, and people in the comments were MAD
when an display costs more than an gaming setup
Glad they hired you and produce these videos honestly. You are on points with people who consider to buy Mac, or Apple products in general.
0:19 - well she never had to use a magic mouse 😂😂😂
Price? $800
Are they even being delivered already?
Bc it’s rumored
I think apple have signified miniLED as a “pro” feature now. If they did release a miniLED display, it would be a replacement to the pro display xdr, not the studio display. Remember, Apple tends to operate outside of general industry trends, just because prices on non-apple miniLED displays has dropped, that won’t necessarily carry over to apple.
Yes, this is the monitor Linus yanked the power cable out of on WAN show.
Because it’s rumoured and some people need displays now.
Wonder why is that?
There is a reason LTT have to buy every Apple product for review.
Well said
@@grumpychocobo Is it possible that it's because it's all smoke and mirrors, and that for less than half the cost you can have a machine that runs as well, if not better - despite their damnably good tablets and phones!
I got one refurbished from apple for $1350. 100% worth it at that price.
Jonathan's editing style and storyline is so good!!!
I bought one recently and honestly really love it. If money isn't a concern for you, this display is pretty awesome. Really really love it.
The way Riley look at John mounting the Vesa in disgust is just hilarious
For me it’s always been function over form. So if I can have 2x 4K monitors, decent webcam and good speakers for the price of one of these displays. The chose is made.
I work in a studio (13 designers) where we all have a dual monitor setup. Imagine buying everyone an height adjustable monitor for… €2239,00, which is the price here.
Get one for the house then? At least try it in the store if you can. It’s a luxury professional purchase. Like many things you can get by with less, but you would also benefit from it as well.
But you need equally calibrated monitors otherwise teamwork will fail due to inaccurate colour representation
@@DarkPa1adin You can calibrate monitors. Also in my experience is not as big an issue.
It does, I went from a cheap LG 4K monitor to a 42C2 and the whole experience is nicer, plus this is an OLED which is cheaper than the apple display.
7:25 that expression sums up everything about the Apple Studio Display.
Mmm, well done on 400K subs!!
haha, scammmMM
I stopped watching at 'a $130 cable'
Engineer: do you want to add cost to ease-of-use accessories or make it more expensive
Apple: yes
Riley looking annoyed at Jonathan at 7:26 is enough to justify watching the whole video LOL.
EDIT: now that I actually watched the whole video:
Bravo, I know being an Apple "fanboy" can cloud one's mind but this was a really deep, serious, useful, honest take.
They don't even need to be made out of aluminum, I'm just asking for a nice design.
the most important part of Apple's displays is the high PPI (retina).
the biggest appeal of the studio display is to use Mac OS at its pixel perfect resolution without scaling. and that alone doesn't exist except for the LG 5K. for my work I'm completely ok paying the extra just for that.
Exactly! So tired of people who don’t even understand the purpose of this monitor…..But I can get a 40” 4K Dell!!!! 40” is waaayyy better than 27”!
Great content again. Really in-depth review of a product without the unnecessary shouting.
Thunderbolt 4 only supports up to 60Hz at 5-8K resolutions, so we'll probably need to wait for TB5 before 120Hz/5K becomes a possibility.
@@tronam Display Stream Compression should easily allow DisplayPort 5K 120Hz (it allows 8K 60Hz which is MORE bandwidth)

@@tronam DP2 isn't what's needed, just DSC, and that is relatively common on modern video cards. There might be an issue, but it isn't bandwidth.
Fantastic Video, would love to have you show even more display alternatives that you like
Please don't show the 4k displays as alternative, I work with text and macOS on 4k is dreadful
Exactly!!!
My only real gripe with the studio display is that it doesn’t provide enough power out to keep my 12.9” M1 iPad Pro fully charged
Oh Really?! Though that might be Apple's "Optimized Battery Charting." If it stays in the high 90s% it's preserving the battery
That's not really possible, it can charge a MacBook Pro 16 no problem... I bet you a 100 bucks is what Jonathan says.
This is top notch content. Pure gold. Thank you for the thorough reviews and unpopular opinions.
WARNING: the Mateview does not support Displayport 1.4. It cannot run full chroma at full resolution at 60hz.
it can do 4k 60hz 10bit at yuv422 and you won't see any difference compared to yuv444 unless you use a colourimeter, or if you really want yuv444, you can do 4k 10 bit 50hz or 4k 8bit 60hz

How do you have 100k subs, a verification from RUclips, but no videos?
(I didn't bring this up under that video because android tablets are a joke and I didn't realize at the time that Samsung was trying to bring competition back)
Anyways; love this, love you, not my favorite channel to watch but definitely the most useful for me
Dude, we're already onto the M2 MacBook Air. The news on this has ended.
I wondered the same thing
Really like the rythm of your videos. Especially because it's different from the plethora of LMG videos (which i don't hate).
I think this is the best video that was ever released so far! Excellent!! 🔥
Indeed. It is strange there is this gap in the market.
I wish it had ProMotion, a default height-adjustable stand with rotation, and a much lower price tag.
That MateView immediately captured my heart and then immediately dashed it when I noticed the Huawei logo on the back. Damn you geopolitics! Getting in the way of my dream of large-format square monitors...

2. have them buy display
3. have them ship display

(I also dislike background noise so I like having headphones personally.)
If my screen wasn't bright and colourful, then the content I look at wouldn't feel bright and colourful.
The best review of this screen. Keep up the good job. We need More(!) videos from Mac address.
