How I Paint Things - Speed Painting Skaven Clanrats (Super Easy!)

  • The Skaven are a race of ratmen without counting, gnawing away at the very roots of reality and chewing at the gaps between realms. An endless tide of furry bodies, gnashing teeth and crude weapons, they are a primal force to be reckoned with, burying their enemies under swarms of Clanrats. READ MORE:
    Painting a whole Skaven army can seem pretty daunting, but it doesn't need to be! There's plenty of places you can cut corners and get a pretty decent result on the table without worrying about highlighting every strand of fur, and for those that have enjoyed the speed painting and simple techniques in some of the other 'quick' videos so far, here's how I tackle the Skaven. Remember that you can swap colours as necessary to fit your own clan allegiance - green, brown, purple or even putrid yellow all work perfectly well with these same techniques.
    I'll give you a clue: Agrax Earthshade may very well feature heavily in these...
    If you do decide to stick to Citadel paints, then after using Bugman's Glow as the base colour for your Skaven's skin but before the Agrax Earthshade, just go over with a coat of Cadian Fleshtone and all will be well. :D
    How I Paint Things is a series of simple instructional videos designed to help the newcomer through some of the basics and demonstrate how the very simplest techniques can still give you some great results that're easily replicated. Aimed at the beginner to painting miniatures, there might be one or two tips or tricks that help even you old hands!

    This video changed how I paint miniatures, no procrastinating or over thinking, everything I paint now follows this template and I've never been happier. In two years and pretty much ten months I've painted 986 miniatures, including some terrain pieces, lots of monsters, bestiary entries & characters for Warhammer Quest, my Undead, Chaos, and Skaven army. I also learned painting Skaven is what I enjoy painting most of all. Thank you for this tutorial.

      Not everybody's got a week to paint each miniature in their army, unfortunately! I also subscribe to the idea that there's nothing I will show folks how to do that I wouldn't put on the table myself; there's no 'second best' in my own armies, either. If you're painting for spectacle there's tons of corners you can dance around! :D

    Dude, I'm so glad the way you lay out your videos, with the paints in a line you step through each one calling out the paint and the brush. You also paint using simple effective techniques with a small choice of colors. The GW videos always use like 45 colors for every model. You're one of the few youtubers who does step by step painting at this nice simple level, others are going for very high level. Thank you for your work. Much appreciated

      I've long thought there's a niche for folks that just want to get things done. I could easily have used a dozen or so more paints, but as I'm fond of pointing out, you don't need to reinvent the wheel for every detail. Sometimes a dose of Agrax Earthshade is all you need. ;D

I was wondering what to do about the Mornfang Brown on the Tau figure you did because I did not have the spray but your suggestion on an alternate method of applying it really helped. I like the simple approach you used to paint this figure but it yielded a great result. I'm just glad to see the Agrax Earthshade out again. Thanks for sharing this cool tutorial.

      I felt like it was about time to get back to the roots and smash Agrax all over something. ;D It'd been too long! The Army Painter range of sprays is pretty extensive, but none of them are quite a perfect colour match for Citadel's range. Not a big problem, though, especially if you're wanting to get a base colour down first.

    Praise be to the Agrax Earthshade!
    Sonic, would you consider doing a How I Paint Things video on the Raptors Space Marine Chapter? There seems to be various ways of achieving that lovely olive green armour and I'm interested to see how you go about it!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  5 лет назад +1

      I'm probably not going to get to more power armour for a little while, unfortunately, but Raptors are one I've had a shot at previously with some pretty decent results. Start from Death Guard Green (I spray prime using it, then a quick layer from the pot just to make sure my coverage is right). A quick drybrush around all the edges like I usually do on Marines to pick out detail with Nurgling Green, and then shade with Athonian Camoshade. Since you're not adding any other gross colours or using Agrax Earthshade, you'll actually get a pretty crisp olive green, similar to WW2-era Russian vehicles. Works pretty well for the Raptors, if you ask me!

    • @Strigon_Actual
      @Strigon_Actual 5 лет назад +2

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio Cheers for the quick response. I can understand why you won't be doing more power armour for the foreseeable - you've done plenty of Space Marine videos already, ha.
      I'll definitely give your Raptors recipe a try and see what sort of result I get. In my minds eye, Death Guard Green seems like it could be a little too light but with the Athonian Camoshade I'm sure it'll darken out a fair bit. Thanks again!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  5 лет назад +1

      I do love my Marines, but I think if folks had their way I'd just do a straight month of power armour and there's only so many of the buggers I can stand. ;D If you're planning on adding some of the yellow stripes and such to the armour it'll make the green seem all the darker by comparison, too, so going a little middle ground with the green will give you more you can do with it, I think. Worth an experiment!

      It'll look quite a bit more red by comparison - if you're planning on a different colour for the clan stuff, like a green or yellow, it'll look pretty good, but otherwise I would think it'd blend a little close to the Mephiston Red. If you've got the Fur Brown though, give it a shot and see what you think! You might still like the results. :)

    When i wash with Agrax Earthshade everything just feels way too dingy and dirty. I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong with it. Any advice on applying the shade?

      I'm the same when it comes to Earthshade. Would love to know why that is too.

    Is this Emang's model or a GW model? I ask because this looks like one of his.

    perhaps im just imagining things but this seems to be recorded at a lower framerate?

      I don't know what's gotten into people lately about frame rate, but whatever's happening is on RUclips's end. I encode and upload at 30fps constant framerate rather than peak, so if it's looking bonk in some places it's out of my hands.

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio With "people" you must be referring to me😅 I personally do not believe it's on RUclips's end. I can't find anyone else with the same problem. You see encoding the video at 30fps won't make it 30fps. Just like encoding a 1080p video in 4k won't make it 4k. I suspect you might somehow be either recording it at a lower framerate, or accidentally changing the framerare along the line during editing. Could you perhaps tell me what camera you are using? I wan't to help you solve this as it will make your content better.

      It's more than just you - it happened a while back with comments on drybrushing all appearing on the same months-old video, too. Must just be something in the water of late! I record on a phone because that's all I've got, but it records at 1080p 60fps. Between Vegas and Handbrake there's still nothing that ought to be setting it as low as 15fps. I'll figure it out eventually, but this is all backyard stuff anyhow.

    My only issue with this fantastic tutorial is that you had to make the voice of critique have a traditional English accent...
