    thanks i have 120 skaven to paint and had just no clue, sadly some of the paints you mentioned at not avaible here so mostly gw paints but will give it a go, hardest bit will be hand painting them black and then a sturdy dry brush in white , so many skaven lol

    This was great to see Stu. I remember that article really well. In fact still have it somewhere. Loved how dirty and horrible the Skaven looked. As you said inspired me to start collecting them. One day I may get them all painted 😆. The Blighted Marsh are really good for Skaven. I use them on my Undead a lot. Blighted behind them where they have been and grass in front ready to corrupt

    I like the finished product, the journey to get there is weird and interesting to watch as I dont zenithol or use the watery new paints, looked good at the end. I have just over 300 Skaven models, I like adding to them, theyre my favourite miniatures to paint and collect.
    Paint recipe I use is adapted from the Sonic Sledgehammer Studio speed painting Skaven tutorial, I dont like bare arms on my Skaven. - dark primer, brown overbrush, block colour everything not fur, agrax everything, highlights with block colours, highlights with lighter colours, layer in rust/verdigri where required, done. Just different colour rags depending on clan, colour schemes based on those in the WHFB 8th Edition Uniforms & Heraldry book.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  Год назад

      I love Sonic Sledgehammer’s stuff, probably the best around for short videos with excellent tabletop quality finish. A few years back I would have used the method (or very close to) the one you’ve mentioned. But I used to hate the blocking in colours stage, but I find I actually enjoy it with contrast/Speedpaint/xpress colour etc.

      @MiniatureRealms  6 месяцев назад

      It’s on my ‘to do’ list to go back and do it for quite a few videos, sadly in order to get it 100% right it would mean I have to watch the videos back, and even skipping through that’s quite a time sink. I do make sure I mention all the paints I use before each stage in the video, so there is a record there for the viewer, but I appreciate that does mean they may have to make their own list.

    Looks awesome! I went for a lot more dark tones on my Skaven Clanrats (had about 120 of them to paint, 3x boxes of Island of Blood), and did them ALL at the same time, in an assembly line. Tedious, but once I got through some of the worst stages and it was on to the details it looked REALLY cool! But yeah, keep it in batches of 5-10 at a time, not 120!! :P
    I'm not really gonna use them too much the way I'm gonna play them to begin with, most of my focus is on the Plague Monks and Stormfiends, but I had to bring 1-2 units of Clanrats just for the weapon team that I can have with it! :D

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  Год назад +1

      Thank you 🙂.
      That’s actually how I tend to paint, partly because of commission painting for a day job, but also because I hate to go back and do second units int he same scheme once I’ve finished another already. So I just end up doing massive batches like you have, it’s an odd process, you seem to be getting nowhere for a while, then suddenly it all comes together.

    @MrBlackear Год назад +1

    Ahhh go onnn. What's one more project eh?😂
    I know you say thst you don't fix the pigment to the the base and I was just wondering if you ever varnished any figures?
    Does varnish make a difference to how the pigments look?
    Might give pigments a go one day.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  Год назад

      Yes varnishing would destroy the dry look of the pigments. I varnish reluctantly, well at least as a final finish (I use it as part of the process for some things, like before decals or oils), but I hate the way it changes the colour. For metals I always do, but more likely after base coats, for plastics I prefer not to, don’t find it necessary, handle the models by their bases. It also kills metallics.

    • @MrBlackear
      @MrBlackear Год назад +1

      @@MiniatureRealms I do like it to add a bit of protection. The vast majority of my figures end up travelling for events and inevitably get bashed about during transport or play. Even the plastics.
      You never got lured in by the magic that was Testors dull coate? 🤣

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  Год назад +1

      I’ve used plenty of spray on varnish, just less so in recent years. Pretty much anything I paint that is armour or armoured is likely to have a gloss varnish before oils, then matt after. I always use varnish on metals as well, but likely before I paint metallics. Plastics, only for commissions.

    Did they not axe skaven, dark elves, and the lizard men? I wanted to play one of these armies….. so sad

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  7 месяцев назад +1

      They’re not axed no, just not part of the new games narrative at the start. Warhammer Fantasy has changed, it’s not a ‘main system’, and run by SDS (Specialist Design Studio), which is basically the old Forgeworld side of the business. Because of that there are limitations and restrictions, lots of theories on why, but what we have are 9 factions for now (I think the rest will be added in a few years time.
      They are however providing full army lists for all factions and profiles that were around at the end of 8th, and have said those will be available as pdf’s shortly after launch. They have been named ‘legacy’ armies. In some ways these are quite well provided for, with very good AOS ranges, that are actually newer models than the factions covered.
      Anyway, long answer, and good chance you know this anyway. Just wanted to provide a fuller picture incase you did not. If you want to play Skaven then go for it, you’d only need the new rulebook and the pdf (and an army of course, but much of that is available in AOS, and rumours are they’re getting more this year as well in AOS).
