Balancing Redox Reactions in Acidic and Basic Conditions

  • We know that redox reactions are ones that involve electron transfer. Something is oxidized, and something else is reduced. But these reactions can be tricky to balance when surrounding water molecules are involved in the reaction. Let's go through the algorithm for balancing redox reactions in both acidic and basic conditions.

It just feels so good when you learn something. At first I could follow everything that was explained, but couldn't do the exercises myself, and now after studying for a week for my first university exams doing the exercises just comes to me naturally. This video has been a huge help, so thanks for that.

You are a hero. You are making it possible for people to learn chemistry by your clear, concise and useful instructions and demonstrations. I believe you are opening the doors of opportunity for many people, who may not otherwise have the opportunity to excel in the sciences. I believe you are improving the lives of your viewers and hopefully the condition of the world. You are improving my life by helping me pass chemistry so that I may enter graduate school and work towards a masters degree. Thank you Professor Dave.

This was good but the step where you add electrons could use a bit more clarification. I get it, but only after rewriting the half reactions as one long equation. Maybe annotate that part of the video to eliminate ambiguity as to what left and right actually mean. Again, I got it, but not at first until I stared at it for a little.
