  • This was Jim Henson's final performance as Kermit the Frog on may 4th 1990. Two weeks later Henson would die from a severe streptococcal infection. This show also marked the first public appearance of Electric Mayhem member, the Muppet known as Clifford, voiced by Kevin Clash. Clash, probably best known as the voice of Elmo on Sesame Street is the subject of "Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey." The film won the Special Jury Prize award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. At the end of the interview you can see Kevin Clash seated next to Jim.

The fact that he had a “frog in his throat” and Jim said he was upset with this performance for not meeting his standard, and it was the last time Kermit was ever seen by Jim Henson. It’s absolutely heartbreaking.

He struggled to meet his standards because his body was already fighting bacterial pneumonia, which is what killed him.

That’s likely to be true, but we can never be too sure. Underlying medical conditions can make an infection much worse, and there are strains of bacteria which have grown much more resistant to antibiotics, one reason researchers are trying to develop new generations of antibiotics.
But yes, you are right. People should seek more immediate medical attention when they feel ill.

Yeah. Things would’ve been different if Jim DID go to the doctor and find out about his fatal condition sooner. He would’ve sold his company and characters (except Sesame Street; The Fraggle Rock characters would’ve been included in the sale) to Disney in 1990 rather than his family making the transaction in 2004, the planned Disney/Muppet ideas (Pandemonium Pizza, Great Muppet Movie Ride, Muppet High, Year of the Pig, Muppetland takeover of Disneyland) would’ve come to fruition, and Jim would’ve retired at some point, passing the roles of his characters to Steve Whitmire and etc. later on.

It’s wild that Steve Whitmire got fired for “portraying Kermit as a miserable victim”. Kermit has never been mean or truly depressed, but even with Jim, in every interview he’s struggling with something. This never came off as him being some kind of victim, it humanized him and made him feel like a real person with problems and a life outside of the muppets. It was truly something else, and I hate that he’s become what he is now.

Henson caught the flu en route to L.A. for this taping. But he because he grew up Christian Scientist, he was reluctant to get it treated and refused over the counter medicine. About a week later, during a hectic flight and work schedule, the Flu progressed into Walking Pneumonia, but again, Jim was reluctant to go to the Hospital so it worsened due to overwork. It wasn't until May 15,1990 when he finally agreed to go to the Hospital, but it was too late. The Pneumonia had spread infection to his organs, Doctors tried to save him, but didn't administer Detox and instead used Antibotics, which allowed the body to produce natural anti body toxins which shut his body down. He lapsed into a Coma, and died. On The Early Morning Hours of Wednesday May 16,1990 in NYC.

His death, unfortunately, triggered events which let the franchise languish for over a decade. It's good to see them finally recovering, and getting back to being a household name. This interview was on the evening of Friday, May 4, 1990 in Los Angeles. Eleven days and a few hours alter, Jim Henson was dead of pneumonic streptococcus A bacteria infection. At the time of this interview, Henson had strep throat, but did not have the bacterial infection. This infection occurred at some time on May 11 or early May 12, and some believe that Henson was weakened by strep throat and overwork, and this made him more vulnerable to the infection. This and the fact that Henson did not finally seek medical help until the morning of May 15 led to his death at 1:21 a.m. EST on May 16. By the time he agreed to go to the hospital, it was too late for doctors to save him. How and why Henson acquired the streptococcus A bacteria is a mystery to this day. This May 4 performance by Henson is lackluster and not all that funny; Kevin Clash is the one who carries this interview. Henson's performance is clearly off, as is his voice, no doubt because he was not feeling well. It is sad and painful to watch this interview, knowing what Jim Henson would face in the next eleven days.

Nojiko Tangerine Lady He had strep throat which quickly spread throughout his body. It's otherwise known as Toxic Shock Syndrome. It developed into pneumonia and eventually spread to his other organs which all shut down until he died. If he would have gotten treated sooner, he would have survived. By the time he got treatment for the infection, it was too late because it had turned into toxins by that point and he couldn't be saved. A very unselfish man to the end, so unselfish that he lost his life rather than burden anyone. Rest in Peace, Jim. You are incredibly loved and missed. Thanks for everything. 😭😢

Instead of doing this interview, he should have been at home resting. His immune system was in no shape to fight the infection he got because he never stopped. He constantly pushed himself even when he was sick. It is apparent that he had no idea how sick he was. As soon as he started feeling ill he should have stopped whatever he was working on and gave himself time to rest and heal. He could have beaten his illness if his body was not so weakened by stress and overwork. Even when he was coughing up blood near the end he refused to go to the hospital. It was only when the pain became too strong to ignore he finally gave in and sought medical treatment. It was sadly too late. Serious infections require immediate medical attention. I don't know how long he had the infection but at some point, he should have realized it was getting worse, not better. Henson's death is tragic because it could have been avoided.

Family Guy is right. It's nice to hear the real Kermit's voice again. It sad for such a great creative mind to die so young. We lost so much when he passed away. We will never know what other amazing characters he would have blessed with if he lived on. His puppets take a life of their own! He lives on through them.

We lost Jim far too soon. Jim and The Muppets, and Sesame Street, along with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, shaped my childhood, and of course millions of others. We miss you Jim. Clifford was fantastic. I watched Arsenio religiously too as a teen on my little 13" TV in my bedroom. I'd stay awake too late every night, tired for school the next day, because I couldn't miss Arsenio.

Clifford was actually supposed to join Kermit as the face of the Muppets in the same vein that Elmo was. Sadly, when it was time for Clifford to take his rightful place, they ruined his character by removing his shades and making him upright.

Clifford sounds like (singer) clearance carter (the guy who sings strokin'). Lol. That part about him getting spanked got to me (along with the part where he talked about being a sponge before becoming part of the Muppet band. I wish Kevin clash would come back as the voice of elmo who is one of my favorite characters. Those damn kids are always taking advantage of nice people like Kevin who work so damn hard for the fame that they receive. Its the exact same situation that my favorite singer Michael Jackson was in. I guess Michael Jackson's song was true (people would do anything for money)
