- In this video I discuss a book, "Fresh Paint" by Flora Bowley and Lynzee Lynx, and how this book (and course) helped me find my artist style. I also show you how I would approach finishing works in progress, on paper. I use watercolour and acrylic paint including some other mixed media supplies.
My videos are not edited, and I just work with what inspires me along the way.

Thank you sooooo much for saying this. I love doing videos but technology makes me go a bit nutty some days! haha
you have to gift to inspire! I stopped a while ago and got stuck comparing.... thank you for the encouragement!
I can’t watch this yet, but I’m so excited to do so later!! 🎉
Thanks for writing me right away, Kristy! I'm excited to see how it goes for you!
Thanks so much for the shout out Allison! I have Flora's book in my Amazon cart.
wonderful. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it.
I'm new to your channel and will watch from now on. I love your ideas. Thank you.
Awesome! Thank you!
Hi, I love the quote. ❤It’s all about discovery 💥
Yes, that is a beautiful quote. Thanks Karen.
Your videos are next level . I actually just bought that book . You must have mentioned her before . I appreciate how you suggest other artists because I'm always looking for more content to view in between your videos. I think you read my mind because i was about to suggest for you to tell us how you started selling your work. Your so inspiring because in 5 years you went from being a nurse to a full time artist. I love how you are so encouraging to other artists. It's absolutely ok for you not to share all your secrets like your reticulated pattern. Now I'm going to have o go read that book more indepth.
thanks so much for your thoughtful comments, as always! I appreciate you .
I didn't know that Flora Bowley have a book and that she's out of social media. She was a great inspiration for me about 10 years ago when I was painting on canvas. Thank you for sharing.
she has at least two books out now I believe. thanks for watching and commenting.
LOVE your videos. Keep them coming 🙏🏼
thank you!
Your videos provide so much inspiration! Makes me just feel like I could paint all day long! 😄 Thank you so much for creating for us!
I'm so glad! thanks so much
Hi Allison, Thanks again for sharing so much art inspiration and it's truly wonderful to watch and listen to you as you pass on your knowledge and experiences. So great to have so many video's from you, it's an artistic feast. I've watched all your video's and am grateful for the time you spend making them, learning from you all the time and hope you are able to keep posting on RUclips. If you're ever looking for ideas about content I'd love to see any art you've created around the Christmas theme. I'm looking for gift ideas for family and I seem to remember seeing something you showed us in another video, but I can't find it! Many thanks.
thanks Chris. much appreciated.
Hey Allison I love your videos and your generosity which I think is also ‘your style’. Wanted to let you know Flora did a live on Instagram the other day and gave an update on what she’s up to.
Oh thanks for sharing Lori! I'll have to check out her IG .
Thank you for all the wonderful ideas. I have some woody pencils that I use in my mix media artwork. I never realized that they look wonderful when you apply water. I saw that in one of your videos. I had so much fun painting with them today. 😊
Wonderful! Thanks Madelyn
Thank you for making this video. I’m a career changer, too. Your words here are so reassuring. I love your art and find your work very inspiring. Keep doing what you do! You’re amazing!
Thank you so much
I really enjoyed this video! It is packed with lots of info and resources.
I ordered the book and am waiting for my Art Poetry Deck to arrive, any day now! Can't wait!
wonderful! thanks so much for your support!
These are my good jeans! Lol…I’m so understanding this…
haha. I know you can relate!
haha. i know you can relate!
I actually went to a weekend retreat in Oregon that Flora and a couple other facilitators put together. It was am amazing weekend which at the time jumpstarted my art journey. I had forgotten a lot about that weekend and your video today brought that memory back to life. It's interesting that I saws Flora's IG post and then your video within a day of each other. Your work is really inspiring and the impact that it is really having on me is to come to my art with curiosity and joy. I have a big tendency to judge and get discouraged. I so appreciate your encouragement. Thanks Allison!
Thanks for sharing this Lori. Means so much to me and keeps me going.
Thank you lovely lady for sharing all you know about art, especially for all those pensioners out there who are unable to afford to pay for lessons. I have a question about the coloured watercolour paper! would it work on pastel paper do you think? ❤👵🎨
that's a great question and I'm not sure. The "toned" Strathmore paper I use is actually not watercolour paper specifically. It's for mixed media but mostly acrylic I believe. Thanks for watching Sylvie!
Thank you for sharing❤
thanks for commenting
I purchased the book Fresh Paint and really find reading it inspirational and helpful. I also use the Kuretake paints. It took me a long time to get their Art Nouveau set as it sells out quickly.
This was great watching you work.
thank you Kym
I'm barely into the video but I love Flora Bowley. I've signed up for the self-guided version of Fresh Pain as well as the community Free Flo. Oh and I have the Fresh Paint book, too. All great stuff.
She's a wonderful artist, and it sounds like a great community . Thanks for watching (starting to watch) my video April.
Have you tried the Artist's Loft Level 3 watercolor paper? That is my FAVORITE watercolor paper..... I love it! I was so surprised when I tried it. And I have tried a lot of the higher end brands (Arches, Fabriano, St. Cuthberts Mills, etc). That one is my top favorite at the moment lol!
I didn't know there is an Artist's Loft Level 3 watercolour paper. Wow- this is great to know.. I wonder if we have this in Canada? Are you in the US? I really appreciate this tip! thanks Shanna
Yeah I just stumbled upon it and gave it a try....was really impressed with it! It's 100% cotton. I do live in the US. Let me know if you find it! Also, I finally found the Art Noveau set and ordered it! Yay!! @@allisondawrant
do you mind sending a photo of the artist loft level 3 paper to my email if not too much trouble? hello@allisondawrant.com. Thankyou!@@shannasisak
Artist Loft is a brand sold at Michael's. I think they have rebranded a bit and now have levels for student grade vs. more professional grade supplies. @@allisondawrant
Hi Alison, have you any ideas regarding any tuitorials for xmas cards in your style? Maybe mixed media!😊❤xxx
great idea Sylvie. Something to consider.
I have all the Kuretake palettes and they seem more opaque. I cannot get those other palettes you have, so can you recommend any transparent watercolor palettes?
Hi again Libby😍 I would purchase watercolour sets that are affordable and available to start with as it depends on your budget and location, . Kuretake are unusually opaque. I like koi travel set… but it’s been a while since using them.(likely prices have jumped ). There are some great RUclipsrs on here that review affordable watercolours- that would be a good place to start.
This is a lovely video and I definitely want to get that book! I do have one question about selling your art on IG.. I get a lot of NFT requests... I always say no... But I am interested in your opinion on the subject matter. Thank you 🙏
yes- I say no to NFTs as well, and you can filter out requests by adding “key words” to “filter” on instagram. That way you don’t get direct messages with NFT in the message.
