Thank you. I am from Texas. Dad is from Connecticut, Mom is from backwoods Arkansas, (although against stereotype, they were all really smart). Mom's family, (Mom and both her parents), are the ones who taught me to treat all people equally. Apparently *their* parents were a different story, growing up in Jim Crow south, but my grandparents (born 1921-22) decided that was wrong, and taught their children accordingly. My mom's sister was I think a sophomore at Little Rock during the year of segregation, she wrote about it in the school newspaper, including what some of her fellow students were doing in response. I have never read those stories, just heard the occasional story from her, but I strongly suspect there was scathing social commentary buried under her very strong journalist's creed, if you were listening. She later went on to become first female press secretary in the state of Texas to Mark White, then ran Texas Association of Broadcasters for 20+ years, pushing legislation and advocating journalists, including many black friends she felt had been wronged. My mother's fight was not as dramatic, but she also advocated for black friends wherever she went. I had no idea racism was still a thing until I was an adult, and met humans outside my family/school system.
Whitewashing history erases not only the bad, but also the good, and there is always both, in every human, much less in every society. Look at Russia and Germany. Russia is doing now what Germany did leading up to WW2. Too bad they couldn't open up their history books to see the warning signs. I hope they learn in time to see how Germany healed afterwards; they've been amazing at making peace with the past... but I can guarantee they did not do it by failing to fully understand what happened, just because it's unpleasant.
Raise statues to Confederate heroes. Discuss the nuance. Make it public. But how *DARE* people smugly assume they would have done better in the same circumstances. They have way easier circumstances today, and yet can't bother to pick up a book.
Rant over. Tl;dr: I support you. Raise all statues, north and south. It happened. To forget is to repeat.

As Americans we commemorate the Native American tribes who took each other as slaves as well as White settlers. Long before Americans moved into the Western frontier, Native people fought each other's tribes and took captives as slaves.

These monuments should only be in 2 places. Amongst similar trash in dumps, or out of public view, hidden away amongst other dead and long forgotten things in cemeteries.

Yeah, like the Marine Corps hymn that commemorates when President Thomas Jefferson got tired of ransoming White citizens from the North African nations along the Barbary Coast of Africa who were enslaving American sailors and citizens plying the waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Publicly admit and accept the bad history as having happened. It does matter, as bad history has a habit of repeating itself if not opened to public review for public understanding. Stop pretending slavery was no big deal, when in fact it was the biggest deal. As long as a large part of the population acts like there's no "there" there regarding our history, we will remain divided.

@@GabrielUngacta They were pardoned on Christmas Day, 1868 and their rights were restored to them. This includes the right to honor their courage and sacrifice during the War the same as we honor the Union soldiers today. This is our right as modern Americans. Our nation and its history belongs to us and not the Federal government to do with as we see fit.
