Most of us are. If others are respectful, we are too and likely more friendly than anyone else in this country, regardless of color. Simple as that. Respect.
That flag isn’t racist. That war wasn’t fought to keep slaves either. The states exercised their right to secede from an overbearing government. History refers to it as the Civil War, but it’s correct name is “ The War of the Northern Aggression”. Only a small percent of whites owned slaves, so to think that so many would have died to keep slaves is ignorance. The North had no interest in freeing slaves until they found themselves losing the war. And after the war, the northern states that had slaves continued to hold theirs for many years before they were all finally free. This isn’t my opinion, but facts easily discovered with minimal research. So any one who thinks that flag racist is just lazy and ignorant.
The sales manager was bad, but I'm still trying to figure out what it meant when DeShawn crumpled up the check. Did that mean that he was going to refuse to sell the knives to the customer out of anti-Southern racism, or had he already given the knives to the customer and this was his way of screwing over the sales manager? Because up until that moment DeShawn seemed like a decent guy.

The confederate flag don’t have no effect on me! If some flag holder want to put their insecurities on display then that’s on them! Because the United States was founded on these types of people who considered blacks three fifths of a human being.
Hi DJ. I am French. I know this flag can hurt some people. But watching American History, this flag dos not only represent slavery and war between North and South (the good ones and the bad ones). It is the symbol of a rural way of living against the industrial society. History is history, we can't get back. We can only live trying to be good with each other, and make the best we can for all of us. We are the same. We have love, kids,… And we are tought to love other's kids like ours. I think this flag represents more a souvenir of a natural way of living than slavery, violence, oppression. I love your comment. Love and friendship to you, from Paris, France.
I'm glad you said that I lived in Grand Prairie Texas and I had the Confederate flag in my apartment and most of my neighbors were Hispanic or black they were all welcome in my apartment and a lot of their kids come over and play with my dog and eat with me sometimes. I mentored their kids I would give them things that were mine as a kid things that were very important to me one of the women I defended against another white man she was a black woman he was a white man he spit on her I beat his ass! But for me to take that down because I feel like people are offended know I believe in being myself and proving to people that this battle flag is important to me in my Heritage. Makes me no less of a man or less loving to other cultures are other nationalities or people. I love People based on how they treat me not on the color of their skin or their religious background or anything else I like being around people of other cultures then myself I want them to accept me for who I am and I accept them for how they are the world is nothing more beautiful place! You know what a couple years ago I went and gave out invitations to registered Republican voters in my area and I noticed it the black Republicans and that Asian Or Hispanic Republicans were the most kind to me more so than the white ones it's the same thing I like the experience it was a really cool experience and I'm not just saying that it absolutely was me and the guy we were walking together, we discussed that we were really surprised they we're genuinely grateful for what we were doing ! What it boils down to is we have more in common than we have different and that's what really matters 🙏🏻❤

I hated being a salesman as a teen. This lady cussed me out so bad that I thought she was racist. She just didn’t want people knocking on her door trying to sell her things.
So the coward who threw the rock is also the coward who abandoned his troops in the field. The sales leader who threw the rock, also told DeShawn to go by Sean. Interesting writing.
And the resident of the house displaying the American flag shut the door in the face of the black man, while the guy displaying the Confederate flag let him in and treated him as a human being.
Vault-Tec he was talking about the person who threw the rock through the old mans window because he thought the flag was racist. He thought that nobody wanted to by from Deshawn because of his skin color and them left him there on his own after he realized his wrong.
The use of rope is probably one of the best subliminal details in this, knowing the history of it's use during slavery. First the rope around the pilar and then the rope they cut to demonstrate the sharpness of the knife. That was a fine detail

The old guy was loyal to the flag for a decent reason. DeShawn crumpled the check because he would not be loyal to a company that deserted him. Loyalty is earned.
I agree. His anger was directed at the company man who deserted him. When he heard the man's real intentions for the flag, and that he intended no harm, it made his managers actions feel even more dishonorable. This was a really interesting short.
My take is that he tore up the check because he didn’t want to do business with the confederate flag owner who made racist remarks to him.

Being a black man that grew up in the heart of Appalachia I grew up seeing that flag a LOT while there were racist people who flew that flag there were also some very kind people who also flew that flag as well as a matter of fact several of my friends and neighbors had that flag (including oddly enough one who had left wing ideals on most topics) and when my truck broke down it was one of my neighbors with that flag that luckily saw me and picked me up (they also had my truck towed home for me) because of this it showed me that flag represents vastly different things to different people and just because a person flies it doesn't automatically make them a racist

This short did a great job taking phrases that we consider racist and having the supervisor and the flag owner both use them, however when we hear the supervisor say them, we don't bat an eye- "You're selling yourself!", while when the flag owner says something similar- "You're one of the good ones." (as in good salesman), we assume he's making a racial comment, when he wasn't at all. Such an interesting short film, really played with my head, and was executed intelligently.
Good ones - Christian decent guys I think he means. Aside from being a salesman or not - which I suspect the house owner thinks he is not but gives him a chance anyway.
It means it's a flag. The flag doesn't assign itself meaning, people do. People can also falsely assign meaning. People read too much into things. Inanimate things.
To those that don't understand the ending, I think it's all in our own interpretations mainly but how I interpret it is: he made a decision, he sold that man those knives and rather than giving the money back to the people that left him down. He stood against them by not giving them anything. The man that they threw the Rock at got a free set of knives nothing came out of his bank account. It's all his. The young salesman got the sale he needed, the confidence boost, and the respect of being a good person. On top of that he also received moral Justice for seeing past a petty thing, a small thing like skin color or a Mark that is misunderstood. The supervisor salesman got nothing, he didn't get his recognition, he didn't get courage, he showed his true colors in the end by cowarding away and leaving a man to his own Doom... little did he know the good salesman and the man with the Confederate flag became friends.
This happened to me. A young couple had a flag in the wall. While doing the demonstration, they invited my black coworker and myself to their cookout that weekend. @rain M Because of how do you view that flag. Do you view it as a sign of racism and rebellion against the Union? Or do u see that flag as personal sacrafice for a cause and belief which at the time they believed in was against Union tyranny and state's rights. You need to rmbr, at that time, more people idetified with their state instead of the Union, think like the EU. Imagine if the EU today started to acting overbearing, memeber states would leave the central authority which is the EU. Similar thought process as the US at the time of the Civil war. That flag to southerners represented the only thing that unified them in that moment for that short period of time since US is a relatively new country especially then with not much heritage and history compared to the rest of the world. Lets say hypothetically, the entire world untied as one, would you srsly believe people from different regions, countries, and backgrounds would stop flying their old previous national flag? Tell that to someone especially proud like a an American patriot if that were to happen one day. Similar thought process albiet with different connotations. Hope that helps in any way.

It's crazy. As a black salesman and in-home service tech for over 15 years in the South, I've only had 2 weird experiences which might have been deemed racist. I've been in numerous homes where the Rebel flag flew and the homeowners treated me very nice. Don't judge a book by it's cover.
You're going to laugh, I'm from Venezuela and the series The Dukes of Hazzard was very popular here, it was like a fever, the Confederate flag was everywhere, I had a shirt with that flag as it appeared on the roof of General Lee . As far as I remember nobody said anything bad about that flag, to me it was just a cool symbol of a cool program.
This reminds me of my experience with a person who had a Confederate flag on his truck. One cold December evening, I was parked at the Avondale Marta parking lot when I proceeded to start my car. Unfortunately, the car was dead due to a depleted battery. So, I tried to flag down people for assistance. Car after car passed me by. Finally, a Marta police officer arrived and I asked for a jump start. However, he stated, it is against company policy for him to help me because it might damage his vehicle. Anyway, as it was getting darker and colder by the minute, I started to scan the Marta parking lot only to find one vehicle with a Confederate flag on it's license plate sitting in a secluded spot in the lot. At first, I was hesitate to approach the vehicle. But, I needed a jump start. I proceeded to approached the dark tinted window truck. I tapped on the drivers side glass. As the window slowing opened, the gentleman in the car said, hello, how can I help you? I explained my situation. He stated, "No, problem brother. I would be glad to help you." He connected the jumper cables and my car immediately started. I thanked the gentleman and handed a few dollars in his hand. He quickly said, "No...no...not necessary! Brother, This is my gift to you" while he gently placed the money back into my hands. We hugged and wished each other the best during the holiday. That night, I safely returned home knowing there are people with Confederate flags who are loving, kind and compassionate individuals.
Wow, that’s a nice story. Im super glad you got home safe, because those situations of being stranded with your dead car SUCK. I’m glad he did it without question. We’re all human, and we all gotta help each other out sometimes.
If the license plate had a Confederate on it,state issued it belonged to a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans. This organization has both black and white members an are the descendents of Southern soldiers. SCV has members from all walks of life. I have a Confederate flag on my vehicle also and I will and would go out of my way to help anybody. We are all brothers and sisters in this world and it is the right thing to do to help people because one day I might need help also.
All the tension is made up. There is no reason for any character to be nervous as no one has shown aggression. The only thing that shows tension is the score.
It's true that people have baggage, not things. But some things have well-understood meanings (i.e. symbolism) that exist apart from any individual person's baggage, and that symbolism must be taken into account when displaying those things in public. If he wanted to honor his great-grandfather he should've put the flag in a display case alongside a picture of his great-grandfather and maybe a souvenir or two from the war, if he had any. He shouldn't have flown the flag on the front of his house. The front of your house is where you fly the flag(s) of the nation(s) you're proud of. Context matters.
I was honestly wondering if the video was going to end with Confederate Man's next-door neighbor calling the police because a black man was walking in his neighborhood.
@OAO The parties have changed so much it's hardly worth mentioning the distinction. Though, I see your point. I hate when people conflate racist and bigoted with republican (Not a republican myself, just seems wrong to be prejudice of a group of people).

This was a great example where the whole short film makes you stop and think about what your first knee jerk thought was about all the little moments in the film. When they showed the confederate flag hanging on the wall in the white mans house, what was your first thought ???? When the white man was handling the knives during the demonstration what was your first thought ??? When he told shaun that he was one of the good ones what was your first thought ??? the writers are not trying to tell you anything , they are showing you how we have all been conditioned to think certain ways based on the information that we have consumed in our lives. What % of people that watched this thought the white man was a racist just based on the fact he had a confederate flag hanging on the wall . The writers want you to stop and ask yourself , was I wrong for making that assumption or does history as I have been taught by others , make it reasonable and alright to make that assumption .
I've used to walk my dog every day. I lived close to a confederate flag. I would walk down the street and look at the flag every time I walked by. The house own would come out and sit on the porch from time to time, and I happened to be stopped by him and he talked to me for a bit and asked me about what dog I had. So, I ended up telling him and he commented saying that my dog was beautiful and what not and I continued on with my day. But then the whole thing about banning the confederate flag happened and I walked down the street once more to see the flag and it was gone. Which really upset me because I loved seeing it while I walked the dog. Ever since that day I've never went down that street again. There's nothing wrong with the confederate flag in my eyes. It's part of history and some family's had ancestors who fought in the war. So, the flag was passed down. And honored by their loved ones. I think some people took the flag out of its context and blamed it for being racist and should be banned. But I disagree. We can't attack people simply by what they believe in. They are still humans. I think everyone is allowed to have their own views, opinions and beliefs. I want to eventually somehow get a confederate flag and have it hung up on my wall, for historical purposes.
People like to forget that the south had a draft, the same as Vietnam. The flag represents American soldiers who fought and died for thier country. Sure we could debate the meaning behind the flag all day, but like the short says people have baggage not items. All wars are awful but we should commemorate the soldiers who had no choice.

(as in good salesman), we assume he's making a racial comment, when he wasn't at all. Such an interesting short film, really played with my head, and was executed intelligently.

I mean, people think it was about slavery and it wasn't. Lincoln told the south if they joined the union, they could keep their slaves. But that would mean the south wouldn't have the same state rights as before. So they fought over it.
It's a common misconception that the south just wanted slavery and was willing to die for it. But they could've kept slaves and joined the union. So that's blown out of the water.
@user name in Lincoln's letter to Horace Greenley
"The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union."

Story is excellent. You could cut the tension with a knife. Pun intended.
I think that it was the film maker's intention to have that pun
Brilliant. Didn’t cross my mind.
I'm black and I grew up watching the Dukes of Hazzard. I never once gave thought to the flag as being racist and still today the General Lee is one of most iconic cars. I even built a model car using a Dodge Challenger as the new modern day General Lee.

@@User-he6zd They feared if the federal government can get rid of slavery as Lincoln was a staunch abolitionist, they would further impede their on states rights. It's crazy. As a black salesman and in-home service tech for over 15 years in the South, I've only had 2 weird experiences which might have been deemed racist. I've been in numerous homes where the Rebel flag flew and the homeowners treated me very nice. Don't judge a book by it's cover.
nope never judge no one
You're going to laugh, I'm from Venezuela and the series The Dukes of Hazzard was very popular here, it was like a fever, the Confederate flag was everywhere, I had a shirt with that flag as it appeared on the roof of General Lee . As far as I remember nobody said anything bad about that flag, to me it was just a cool symbol of a cool program.
They treated you nice because you were in servitude to them. If you had gotten "uppity", let me tell you, they wouldn't have been so cordial.

There are a lot of them.

This is a masterclass of tension.
Edit: this is a masterclass of tension because it is done so simply.
I love how it could have easily turned into a thriller or horror short at any moment, but ended up making you feel good at the end.
Not really
Give any stranger a knife and erie music and it's automatically tense.

Very very well done documentry around the issue.
We need a sequel where he meets his first Karen.

I never thought of him as a racist, and I am Hispanic.
It's not a civics class, calm your ass down, tom.
This comment is honestly under appreciated, I’m glad someone was able to put the message into words
my understanding of history has taught me that the confederate flag was the flag of a racist people. he’s hanging it on his wall? he’s racist.
It was a forced reaction anyways with its ominous portrail so it's pointless to if that was what the writers wanted
This really reiterates the saying never judge a book by its cover.
Even a Confederate flag?
@@marconjakecanonoy I've seen good people with a confederate flag.
Thier government called and they made the ultimate sacrifice.
