- Two strangers connect at a wedding.
RECEPTION is used with permission from Joe Gillette. Learn more at vimeo.com/joeg....
Paul is the best man in a wedding, watching the post-ceremony proceedings with an air of detachment and melancholy. While he's surrounded by an atmosphere of love and happiness, he's clearly not quite feeling it himself. But as he tries to avoid the crowd, he meets Jessie, and the conversation between two strangers eventually turns into a spark.
Writer-director Joe Gillette's short romantic dramedy is a sweet, witty slice of life that focuses on how people really truly connect to one another. In a genre where the "meet cute" is often a little too clever, facile and clouded in fantasy, this short is well-scripted, with an eye to explore genuine emotional resonance, especially among ordinary people who struggle with simple everyday awkwardness.
With such honest, compelling dialogue, the performances stand out, achieving a verisimilitude emphasized by the film's minimalist visual approach. Essentially a long conversation taking place between two people, the camera keeps the attention tightly on the two actors, giving the audience the privilege of watching two people come out of their shells and spark a connection between two people.
RECEPTION is simple and elegant in execution, but the ideas and feelings underlying this small-scale gem are messy, complicated, vulnerable and compelling. Open-hearted and sincere, it just may inspire viewers to look at life through the lens of opportunity -- and expand horizons in their own everyday way.
Dude that moment when he completely forgot her name was exactly what I was thinking at the exact same time. The script is actually pretty relatable
Same here!
Right?? I even forgot the name as well

"Finally he found someone to dance with". Wow what a metaphor. Guy at the end finally asked her to dance with him. And her reaction was priceless.
yeah she was literally begging for it
Loved the way she turned around when he said her name at the end.

Yes😭👌🏼✨ I was just about to comment that
Her walking away was so painful for both of them. She was so relieved when he called her back for a dance. Two lonely people who deserve each other.
i think even the audience was relieved as well. I sure was 😭

It was part of the game, like the flirting. She said "someone quicker" and then she gave him the shot and he took it.
The dialogue is so realistic. The small awkward pauses, his stuttering and stammering almost like you can see him thinking of the right words as if he's not going off a script
those 20 minutes went by like nothing, just because I was genuinely interested in their conversation.
I know. I'm so invested!!!

I just realized I watched two people talking and pointing at things that doesn't exist and the entire time I'm imagining what the party looks like! Great job on the acting! This feels like a theater!
that is some deep thought.. i was imagining what the party would like , but never in my wildest dream thought that, there is no Party.. appreciate your thought!
Yeah agreed this is would work as a short play
Oh wow, during the entire film I never realized, it didn't show a single shot of the party. It just felt right there all the time.

We used to have such parties outside before we had mobile phones and PUBG
The body language is brilliantly acted.
I commented earlier re the same, the subtleties of their movements and expressions were really incredible. I would rather watch two hours of this than any movie I can recall ever seeing!
@Jacob Hiller: I don't know, the touching moments seemed pretty artificial and stiff to me, but maybe I'm not properly visualizing how that's supposed to look from my perspective. Overall the body language looked ok, but it didn't strike me as particularly skillful or brilliant.
Her demeanor is uncanny to Emma Stone

@Apocalyps: Well, if a conversation is interesting, people don't necessarily mind hearing it. Just have a fancy background and fancy lighting, and it's conceivable, and doesn't necessarily require brilliance.
There's also an awesome movie called The Sunshine Limited, with Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson.
Absolutely loved this one. These two actors have more undeniable chemistry than most Netflix rom-coms.

The female character made me feel she's hilarious. The male is as effective. Good script, great acting. A nice thing off to a good start. Wish this short film was developed into a full romantic movie.
YES ! I felt the same way. I would love to see this as a movie or a series. Their chemistry was amazing.
To me it was a full romantic film. Thank you, algorithm. This was lovely.

No, first love isn't the best! The last love is the best!
I agree.
@Ilana Mutual feeling Ilana
i hope so
why cant first and last be the same ?
You're implying that the last one, will be the one till death...But what if your last love ended when you were 29 and you had everything you wanted and it still didn't worked. Now, 9 years of horsing around. All my friends are married, got kids and are way too busy for me. The confidence of youth is gone, time still leaps forwards and way more quickly than I want to admit. I've been with a lot of women, loved some of em. But for me, as of now, first love is still the best because the last one still hurts like a gunshot through and through my heart. Cheers!!
I keep coming back once in a while, when a sense of romantic strikes me -- it is amazing how she controls the whole situation all the time

Ikr, it was so realistic. The acting was ON POINT.
Of all the videos I have watched on this channel, I come back to this as my all time favorite. Watched it many time whether I'm up or down these two actors put a smile on my face, and a positive feeling about life.
If it doesn’t happen for me like this, I don’t want it. The type of chemistry that’ll last a life time.
A Wedding can be a good place to meet others....Peace
I watched this for the third time in 6 months, I never caught on that the last thing she says is "I Do." and that they are at a Wedding, brilliant!
when jess started stalling when she said she had to go find karen at the end... i’ve never screamed “give her your number!” so often in a short space of time 🤣
Great story, very creative writing, superb acting, Devin is adorable, and these people should consider making it into a full length movie, like they get together and we follow the development of their reationship. I am glad he asked her to dance.

No such thing as a perfectly crafted romantic short fil... oh. The best 20 minutes I've spent on any video in a very long while. Love those stretches when I forgot they were acting. The actors holy grail 🏆 Damn. Shocked to find so few roles with actor Joe Gillette. That's so wrong. Homie should be _everywhere_ in everything!

This was superb. Absolutely amazing.
The natural convo, with little pauses and not over the top dialog or actibg made it seem so real and cute 😍
This is one of the best written dialogues I've seen. The conversation between them is so organic, feels real. Rather have more of this than 40 Marvel movies a year
True dat
My relationships always started 'awkwardly' but somehow i found the love of my life. Weve been married 15 years tomorrow ans shes the best thing that ever happened to me. Go Paul & Jessie...💘
Whenever I come back to this - and I must have come back to this more than I can count on my fingers now - I invariably end up gigglin ear to ear - something so organic, so natural, so effrotless, so playful, so seamless, so complimentary, so charming about this. Can't believe such a simple short film can evoke the emotions in me that this one does, time and again.
The awkwardness.. there is a Michael Scott level of charm in it.
Never thought a short film like this can be my comfort film
I absolutely LOVED this! My favorite "genre" is things that feel like they could happen in real life. And most movies feel a little far-fetched. Dan in Real Life was great, The Giant Mechanical Man was great... stuff like that. And this was great. And you know what else? This was hopeful. And I LOVE things that aren't depressing or jarring in the name of being original. Honestly, something like this is way more original.

This was better than romance movies… Literally felt like a camera is sitting next to two real people conversing… Brilliant.
Gah! I was so disappointed when she mentioned boyfriend. Good thing it was just a joke. Lol
I think I might felt like he did, cause it remembered me all the moments I've been there; meeting a nice girl, finding really good things in her, almost falling in love so hard in a matter of minutes, and then she says something about her boyfriend...
I almost closed the video to play my "SadMe with love" Playlist
If it was me she would have won me on that spot. I fell like a child for that, and i really look forward to those kinds of teases.
Wow. Just Blown away with the strength of both characters.
I remember I was in a hurry one day, in line to return long-overdue books in the library, a girl tried to chat with me. I was under some pressure, and tbh a bit anxious about a lot of things at that particular time, and she was the one carrying the conversation, she initiated it, she continued it, she resumed when there was a pause, I barely said or asked anything, I was focused on something else. But she didn't mind at all, and was more than friendly. Later, when the things I was anxious about were over, I thought about it and realised if I had met her under different circumstances, things would probably have gone differently.
I never saw her again.
