@@MelodyGrooveJunction I would say to a degree that it does. As a writer myself, I can understand what the writers had to deal with. With the last airbender, they KNEW they were gonna do 3 seasons, and a lot of the overall plot was at least outlined so they knew where they were going and just needed to figure out how to get there, and nickelodeon gave them the ok for all 3 seasons.
Now lets take this from an authors standpoint. Let's say i have an idea, and the idea is overall good in concept. Lets say i write 3 books as i wanted to, now lets say that my editor comes in and says ive been approved to publish a single book and i have to cut it down from 3 300 page books to 1 300 page book. To make this demand, i would have to cut out so much of the moments that would actually tie the elements of these books together and it would no matter how much i tried to write to fix it, would simply be impossible to maintain throughout the whole thing in a way that keeps it making sense. You cannot take 3 books and fuse them into one, cutting over 2/3rds of the content and making it work because it was not written that way in the first place, and i would have to rewrite the whole thing from scratch in the first place to actually accomplish this.
This scenario is similar to the first season of LoK, where they had a lot of ideas they wanted to work with and they were told "sure go ahead, you have 12 episodes", which definitely hindered what they wanted. From some interviews I've heard, when they proposed the idea to Nick, they were planning based on 20 episodes and were going to flesh out the equalizers and the pro-bending championship more, and try fleshing out Korra's training as an airbender. They originally wanted her to start getting some use of it before the climax so its not as jarring as it was in the climax of season one, but they had to cut down on the probending and equalizers and the training to nail down to 12 episodes.
Back to my book analogy, I only wanted to write this 3 book trilogy, which i was forced to chop down to a single book, so all my ideas are already down and i had no intentions of writing more beyond that, and now they are demanding i write a sequel to it as well, which is exactly what happened with book two, which you have to finds someway to up the stakes from the previous iteration, and then that feels rushed and barely put together, and you put it down because you're tapped out, but now you're demanded to write another sequel, so now you've had time to stew, so rather than focus on major forces colliding like the first two, you decide to try to bring it to a more personal level, make it about the characters dealing with the fallout of the past two books, and make the antagonists less of a world ending, and more of an ideological foe.
Then they force you to make a fourth book on half the budget in half the time and you're just burnt out so you say fuck it and go back to world shattering conflict again and BOOM, you have book 4 because they wanted a product they neither needed to think about or pay for, so they got a product with as little effort as possible. They got a complete cohesive story yes, but less money meant less incentive to improve quality, and was a sign that this was to be the end, so who really gives a damn, im just happy to be done with it at this point.
A lot of people personally blame the writers, but honestly, the stories themselves were good on their own but needed more time to flesh out to make them better, and this as a writer is something i understand. I hope you do too, as the writing is the single biggest part of a series to be hit by the publisher, because not only do they have to tell a whole story, they then have to adapt it to X number of episodes, and adapt it in a way that it can be translated into animation by the visual team, and translated into character acting by the actors. As a novel writer, i write for words on paper to be read, it is far harder to do that in a way that it is divided into episodes, scripts, and animation, as you basically need to ensure that the story is written, the characters are described to react physically and vocally, etc

      @brettrichards4048 2 года назад +14

@@MelodyGrooveJunction I'm sorry, but this is a hilariously bad take. Like did you watch the video?
Imagine being told to write a single book and tell a complete story. Not a long book either, you got a hard page limit. And btw, you're following up a well paced trilogy where just the first book was almost double the page length, and then had two more to flesh out characters and story lines.
But you do the best you can. The story is a little short and sweet, some aspects are rushed, but you treat it like a little epilogue, a glimpse into the future of the world and the new conflicts that could arise. But you end it and tie up the story in a neat little bow, no loose ends.
Then suddenly you get told to make a sequel to that story you just finished. Even though that cool antagonist is dead and you have no lingering story lines. And now that you don't have a blank slate the pacing is weird, you have to generate a conflict in a story not set up to have one. Oh, and you still have a rough page limit but about half the time and budget to do it in. So yea, it's a little rushed, but you find a new aspect of the world to explore. Now you go deep into the past and origins of stuff and it's a bit weird and doesn't tonally fit very well but it still introduced a new concept and you end it with one final big climatic fight. Something way bigger then anything you've done before. Glad that's done and settled- what the fuck do you mean I have to write two more books now?!
Like, I'm sorry, to say that none of that has an effect on writing and quality is a hilariously stupid take. The whole point of this video was "Man, I wonder how good Korra could have been if it didn't have production problems and 50 episode slate right from the beginning.

Living in Germany we always got episodes a couple of month later. I watched all of Avatar on Nikelodeon and I remeber talking to my friend in 4th grade about the finaly of the show.
In 2013 Korra aired on Nikelodeon, but I was a bit older and actually understood English. So I watched it all online on some questinable streaming sites.
I never caught wind of the drama the creators of the show went through. I was justed hyped and excited, that my favourite show got a sequel. I also really liked the show and the animation in particular. Sure, even 14 year old me realised that season two was not that good, but damn was season 3 a banger.
Most of my friend at the time were more into anime and "adult" shows so I could not never really talk about it with anyone. But I still loved it. Korra is a beatiful mess to me and does live up the its predecessor. It has its flaws but the it does also does a lot of things very right.

Nick didn't really have many issues with Zim. The only issues were regards to more violent/messed up stuff. As for the show being cancelled, it was just really expensive to produce, what with all the CGI (which was fairly new at the time).

The original is about a normal person learning to become the avatar.
This series is about someone who only ever wanted to be the avatar, learn to be a human, in a world that progressively tells her she isn't needed.
I find it tragic and beautiful.
One of my favorite scenes of the show was season 3, when Korra just talked to someone on the bridge. A beautiful scene above a city inspired by 1920s Shanghai. (not new york, like many people think).

That's when LoK surpassed ATLA for me when they actually show Korra go through knowing what Aang never did. Aang was the typical superhero story of a boy saving the world and everyone adores him, making Aang almost like some Monk Superman. Whereas Korra got constantly compared to Aang and dumped on saying she wasn't as good as him and then began to wonder by season 4 if she should even be the Avatar anymore. Not everyone is going to like you, some will even despise you and that's okay. That's part of life and I like that LoK showed that

I never watched either show on TV, only recently digitally as an adult. That has probably influenced by opinion a lot, but I believe Korra to be a great show, that while having some more flaws than ATLA, is full of great moments and storytelling. Korra as a character was also a lot more compelling to me that Aang, only overshone by the duo of Zuko and Iroh. Anyways, on the topic of this video, I did not know most of this, it does explain a lot about some of the flaws of the show. I'd now say that it is a wonder the show turned out so great considering all this bullshit Nickelodeon put the team behind it through.

Ultimately, the biggest weakness that I felt watching (and recently rewatching) Korra was that many of the villains start out incredibly interesting, and then ultimately flatten out. This comes from the lack of an overarching villain on the order of Ozai, who, while ultimately just a "big bad evil guy", is framed so well throughout the show from multiple perspectives (Zuko's view versus Azula's view of him as his children provide such interesting contrast, especially compared with the gaang's disconnected view of him as more of a powerful force, a goal, than a real person). The third and fourth seasons of Korra are standout to me, though Beginnings is an incredible little self-contained section.

I saw Legend of Korra, so I clicked. Simple as.
Every time I hear about the mess that was LoK’s development and the politics of Nickelodeon, I’m kind of relieved that I didn’t have the show ruined for me; I was busy playing World of Warcraft during the original airing. I only watched it when it came to Netflix, which was a godsend to the fans of this show. I’d shun Nickelodeon for its hypocrisy, but that’s been done so many times before. I just want to thank DiMartino and Konietzko for the hard work they and the rest of the staff put into the show. It has a degree of passion and dedication that is hard to find nowadays.

I'm usually the first person to jump up and defend Korra as a show because of how special it is to me. I can always recognize it's flaws, but I think so many people don't realize the issues the show had because of Nickelodeon and a lot of the backhanded things that happened during the show's development. To me, even with how much of a mess a lot of aspects were, Korra stands out as one of my favorite characters of all time, and here's why:
While I think the message could have been portrayed better narratively, Korra's struggle with what is clearly PTSD and severe depression by the end of season 3 really hit home for me. Seeing someone hit rock bottom really spoke to me at a dark point in my life, and watching her be able to rise up and overcome it meant something to me. It gave me hope. While I know it never really became canon until the comics, seeing Korra and Asami in what was (to me, at least) a very clearly implied relationship made my heart soar. It was the first time I had ever seen even one bisexual person in a show like this, let alone two. And neither of them were the butt of some joke about promiscuity like so many bisexual people were back then.
Awesome video man, I loved it. :)

However I was already following the production closely enough to know it was a side effect of suddenly having to make an unplanned second season. Then she turned out to be my favorite part of Book 4, so that was nice.
I haven't watched Boruto because I really didn't want to sit through having him be the main character before his movie character arc lol

Besides that weird second season, this show is really good
Edit: With weird I mostly meant pacing wise. Since nickelodeon fuckd the study so much, it was totally unfeasable to have a long build up to a grand finally with a raid boss like in the last airbender. So they took their chance and tried to wrap up the series trying to explain a bit of the world before saying good bye. This obviously backfired, but I can't say that I'm totally disappointed with the second season: At first I thought that it was going to be a huge letdown, that they were going to act like nothing happened and keep going, but I was really surprised when all the benders balance came into picture and starting giving random people airbending. Altough it seems a bit forced, it is quite intresting to see how they managed to make some sense out of that mess, sending shockwaves to a lot of parts of the next to seasons.
Side note: season 3 is fucking great, by far my favorite. Season 4 is ok besides the Evangelion Mecha that personally threw me off a bit.

I feel like the one episode from ATLA focusing on Roku’s journey and downfall as the avatar was more interesting then all 4 seasons of LoK.

not gonna lie, I was already kinda upset about all that happened to the show, but seeing Nickelodeon use Korra for Pride Month promotion after not giving the show the climax of Korra's relationship with Asami is really fucked up.

@@thesaviorofsouls5210 Same. LoK to me was made for even younger audience than the Last Airbender, it was focusing too much on political things and typical teenage love that it lost the charm of the Avatar series. TLA did have some problems in season 3 too but throughout everything the show was well-paced, not like LOK.
LOKmakes so many powercreep power compared to Last Airbender that made people feels like all the old characters from the previous series are weaker :/ The characters don't stand out too much too. Their characters require so much team dynamic that when they stand alone they feel like a hollow shell of the team. This didn't happen with TLA.
