I just got the same rifle, put on the Leupold 350 legend Freedom scope VX 3 that's made for the round and got good groupings at 100 yards. I can't wait to give it a try in a few weeks. Thanks for the review.
I wasn't interested in this video until I used a Mossberg Patriot in .450 Bushmaster to harvest two deer. The rifle is lightweight, handy, and the bolt operates smoothly. I agree that it is a budget rifle, but it does the job. You might have just had a bad range day the day you shot this, but you demonstrated the rifle well.
I definitely had a bad range day! I keep threatening to get a bolt action in 450 Bushmaster and do a video a little before deer season, but something always comes up. Thanks for watching Squib!
Like the video. I understand it wasn’t your rifle but honestly all that needed to happen was a scope dial in. You was consistently hitting it was just low n to the right. Once again appreciate the video. I have this rifle for 2 years at this point and it’s amazing accurate.
I did get my own Mossburg 350 Legend as i said i would on another thread. It was not as easy as my buddies was to find a load that it likes and i was almost ready to give up. I went thru lots of powders, bullets & ladder load's to find one that would be acceptable. One thing i can say for sure is the Winchester brass was garbage. Very irregular in all aspects. In fact it wasn't until i broke into my stock of Starline brass did I find the magic and i havent crossed this load back over to Winchester brass yet to see if it shoots the same but my friends gun shoots the Winchester brass fine. I had to throw away several Winchester cases because they wouldn't even feed into my shell holder but I will at least use it for my friends loads since that is what we used for his current go to round of 22 gn H110 topped with the .355" 180 gn Winchester soft point with the same col as Winchester 170 gn factory rounds. I snake the barrel after every 4 or 5 round ladder. My gun finally liked 21.5 gn Alliant 2400 topped with the same pill and same col. That group showed a 5 shot 1.75" and without one flyer it would have been a .62" 4 shot group. And this was after i adjusted the trigger because it had a terribly gritty ramp to the break over. Adjusting sure did clean that up and cut the previous best group in half. I will admit that i was getting nervous. And i did buy some 180 gn .358" Speer Hot Core pills and ran them thru my .356" Lee sizer die. Couple guys told me that wouldnt work but its nothin at all to do. You just have to use the Lee lube for it and it does stink a bit. Almost smells like a 90 weight gear lube. May be what it is but worked beautiful, in fact you cant even tell them from new out of the box but they measure .356" now so those will be my next pill to load up. I did shoot one ladder load with them but not with A2400 powder and not with Starline brass nor with the adjusted trigger so I have high hopes for it. Btw if you load this or the 450BM you dont want much crimp at all. Just enough to tighten it up to the jacket & that is it and just enough expander to allow the bullet to stand up on the case mouth. I'm just happy to have found a load it'll shoot...So, you folks take it from there.
Bought one of these this fall for Southern Michigan. 1” groups right out of the box with Barnes ammo and a cheap Busnell scope. 2 deer dropped in their tracks at 175. My only complaint is why in the world did’nt they use a short action? Nobody will mistake this for a high end rifle but it seems to do what it’s supposed to do.
It’s good in all states not just straight wallers. I took two deer last week with my patriot with 180gr 350L factory loads. Both died on the way down to the dirt. My old favorites are still my favorites but now I have one to add to the list. 1/2” groups at 150 is powerful medicine.
Shooting uphill can cause your shots to hit a bit low just like shooting downhill can land your hits a bit high. That’s probably all it is. Thanks for the review!
Yes, I will be working on re-locating my rifle range to get the bench and target at the same elevation. I just waiting on better, dryer weather. Thanks for watching.
Remember in a hunting gun it's minute of deer not minute of mouse. I understand the paper shows if you miss by a few inches and group 3" but a deer won't notice that you missed by an inch or 3 from point of aim
I picked up the Ruger American in 350 Legend. Plenty good rifle, but I’m a total beginner deer hunter and should have gone with the Savage or Mossberg to save some money. Neither of them would have held me back.
I always remove my sling when testing for accuracy or sighting in.Didn't appear to affect the bags but looks like the front sling swivel was resting on the lead sled.
Was looking around for ohio hunting guns, might go with the moss maverick 88 to start out with, but I want to get a .350 legend at some point or a .357 rifle. I was looking at the patriot and I was also looking at the savage axis .350 legend too. Similar prices and looks and functions but idk what's considered the better one of the two.
I liked the Savage more than the Patriot, but I think I liked the Ruger American a little more. 350 legend ammo is pretty easy to come by in Ohio and may be a little better hunting round than .357. Thanks for watching!
I would have to add this is not justca Midwest solution, but a great NE rifle as well since 9/10 deer are taken at 80yds or less. Just got one last week and I’m getting 1.25” at 100 right out of the box

You need sand bags to anchor your sled. It's jumping all over the bench like a carp out of water. You should be sitting comfortably not leaning into the bench. I enjoyed this video. Remove the sling and rear stud.
I need a different sled, the Matrix is ok for lighter loads but not so much for the bigger ones. The Matrix isn't really made to have weight added either, I'm looking into a better one. Thank you for watching.
I have taken two deer with mine on at 225 yards. And the other one at 256 yards the first one I hit in the side of the head. And the second one I hit just below the spine and hit that artery both died before they hit the ground.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview Fellows all these reviews are lacking about this Mossberg. Problem is the brand manufacturers of ammunition are loading all the 350 legend ammunition at a COL that is shootable in the AR15 platform which minimizes the full potential of the round. Only bolt action maximizes rifle potential! I reload for all my rifles. I am doing nothing special with my 350 legend reloads except reloading the COl to -0.020" short of my rifling lands at 2.340" COL for which the Mossberg is designed for! Brother in law has this exact gun. He’s tried 4 different factory ammo offerings. Best group is almost 3” at 100 yds. He loves the trigger. And that’s about it. Very disappointed with the accuracy. He says the most inaccurate gun he’s ever shot. He says his H&R 12 ga will put it to shame with Remington Accutip sabots. He regularly drops deer at close to 200 yards. He plans to sell the 350. His friend has a 350 CVA and it’s nearly as bad. He called Mossberg and they don’t guarantee accuracy.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview yes his is garbage too 👍 hopefully another brand is a better choice since Mossberg doesn’t care. But we can share our findings and help others make better choices.
This was a loaner gun and the owner said he had it dialed in where he wanted it. I didn't want to change what he had already spent time setting up. I believe he took a doe with it the next weekend after I shot this video. Thanks for watching!
It would be my preference too as I have one in 300 BO and really like it. The reason I don't is because I don't want a mag poking me in the back when carrying with a sling.
Not too bad of shooting there. The barrel might need a little breaking in is all. For the limited range that the 350 has, the accuracy is realistically good enough. Winchester ammo isn't the greatest stuff around either. Maybe other companies will start producing ammo for the 350 Legend if it gains a solid following.
The actual owner of this rifle did a little tweaking and got some better groupings with it, he also got a deer with it this past season. I think it will gain a little popularity as time goes on.
You must of really wanted that cup of coffee. That was some fast groups. Lol how many cups did you drink before the video. Fixn to put a 350 upper on my ar15
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview me too started drinking coffee black with dad squirrel hunting when I was 8 years old.56 now. Have the 300 blackout ar will order 350 legend upper in the next few days. Really liked your video
@@johnconrad3549 thank you very much for the compliment! I'm not a fan of the 300 blackout myself, I have one because of the hype. It would probably be more fun with a suppressor, which is really it's intended purpose.
Could you PLEASE try to fit 5 cartridges in the mag? I've seen reports of other patriots easily holding 1 more than they (mossberg) state. Anybody else know? Thanks
I don't think the low and to the right is your shooting. You previously stated the rifle was sighted in with the 145gr full metal jacket. With the different shaped and lighter bullet at a different velocity the ammo you're using will print to a different point of impact. So, don't worry so much about your shooting...lol
From what I've seen and read this rifle is hit or miss (no pun intended) when it comes to being accurate. Some people get one and it shoots sub MOA groups. Others group 4 inches or worse.
The owner sent me a picture of a doe he took with this rifle, he said he got the Hornady ammo shooting great. Took the doe at 150 yds. Thanks for watching!
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview I have been thinking about getting a 357mag rifle or one of these... I am still leaning towards the 357mag for versatility and lighter recoil. That way I have a nice light rifle for the kids.
@@nivesknight the nice thing about a .357 is that you can run some less expensive. 38s through it for plinking! The 350 legend ammo is not terribly expensive depending on the actual bullet you run though. Thank you for watching!
It's basically a 35 Remington bolt. The ballistics between the two are nearly identical out to 150. Very slight velocity advantage (50 ft) goes to the 35 Rem.
I think the biggest problem is a 1:16 twist is way to slow for it. The 358 legend (358 bullet instead of 355) the hand loaders are using has a barrel in the 1:12 range.
I couldn't say but this Patriot, from what I can remember was pretty light. I think the Ruger American Rancher and the Savage Axis, both in 350 legend, had less "felt" recoil.
The only reason I would consider this anemic round would be as a deer legal upper for an AR platform. In Washington state, you have to use a 6mm or larger bore diameter.
In Ohio, you're only really going to use this for about a week and a half per year, unless you really like the round and want to plink with it or use it for game that doesn't have a caliber specific requirement (coyote, feral hog....). The 350 legend is the smallest caliber you can use for deer in Ohio and if the DNR went by the actual dimensions and not the SAAMI specs, we wouldn't be allowed to use it either! Thanks for watching.
@Bill Madd I do not have enough experience with either the 30-30 or the 350 legend to be able to say. I do know you can't hunt deer in Ohio, and I believe 17 other states, with a 30-30.
@@b94454 The 30 carbine is .308" diameter with a 110 grain bullet traveling at 1990 fps, the 350 Legend is a .357" diameter with a 145 grain bullet clocking in at 2250 fps. I guess the Legend could be a scaled up version of the 30 carbine. Depending on the manufacturer and the bullet used, these numbers could be different.
I'm not understanding why you were not securing it with both hands just letting it lay on the bag is not going to give you any good groups hold it like you are going to use it hunting secure the front not just the back it's not a pistol
It doesn't have as much effect on accuracy as you'd think, the bullet is several feet in front of the barrel before the rifle reacts. Look up some of the high speed videos of a bullet leaving the barrel, it's pretty amazing.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview I shoot long range and I always use both hands to secure it when I shoot and yes it does have a lot more than you might want to think but hey that's fine I understand that it's your post and video so good luck figuring out how to shoot accurate with a rifle
Update. I epoxy bedded the action tonight & cant wait to see the new groups. My initial issues weren't even due to the gun. They were me being stupid. I put junk rings on it thinking oh its just a 350 Legend. Never did that before and i wont make that mistake again. So many variables that determine accuracy and it kicks enough that it can expose junk rings & scopes. Next up: myself or the dealer manager torqued the action screws to much and it fractured the action block/mag well insert. I think i was the one that did it because i heard a pop after he told me on the phone to make sure they are torqued down properly. I called Mossberg today after all the damage was done and they said the rear action screw is to be torqued to only 25-35 in lb. I was way over that. So the dealer gave me a new insert and after all my mistakes i felt I really owed this poor rig a proper epoxy bedding treatment and that part is all done now so at some point tomorrow i'll take off all the electrical and masking tape and let this baby sledge hammer speak to me again. Shes gonna be just fine but I'll update again. And those sized down Speer .358'' to .356" shot absolutely amazing out of my buddies Patriot so I am hoping i get the same result. Best groups out of every bullet tested. >>>>> Don't over tighten them rear action screws boys. If you hear a loud pop you'll know exactly what happened.
Thanks for pointing that out. I corrected that type-o. I also corrected all the finicky groups with the epoxy bedding. Its nice to see a rifle shoot its full potential which is exactly what bedding the action does. I went from being thankful to have found a nice load to finding a slew of good moa loads. These price point guns really wake up to this because lets face it, the actions are "often" literally flopping all over the place and once bedded they really shoot like a far more expensive gun. Thus far - the load that still shines the most was with that sized down .358" to .356" Speer on top of 21.7 gn of A2400 but again this gun likes a lot of loads now. I have about 6 rounds of factory 180 gn left and I'm curious now how those will shoot but tomorrow is another day so I want to break out some H110 powder on that Speer and the Hornady .355" 170 gn. More later.

Looking much better. Maybe the barrel hasn't broken in yet.
Could be, this was a loaner, I do know the owner likes it!
The 180 grain ammunition seems to group a little better than the 150 stuff.
You must of really wanted that cup of coffee. That was some fast groups. Lol how many cups did you drink before the video. Fixn to put a 350 upper on my ar15
Lol, I drink coffee all day long, I'm an addict! I may have to do a 350 AR myself, someday. Thanks for watching!
Thanks
I can't try it, this was a loaner and has been returned to the owner, sorry.
Nope. I have 3 mags for mine and 4 is the deal
I don't think the low and to the right is your shooting. You previously stated the rifle was sighted in with the 145gr full metal jacket. With the different shaped and lighter bullet at a different velocity the ammo you're using will print to a different point of impact. So, don't worry so much about your shooting...lol
Thanks for the confidence boost! I needed it.
Now I want a lever gun inthis caliber. :)
That could be cool!
The g&a review on this was impressive. They got great performance
I'll look into it. Thanks!
Correction. It was in American Rifleman. Sorry
You can try the hornady you already have. or buy some federal an try it
Unfortunately, this was a loaner and I have already returned it.
Good job 👍
Thanks!
The patriot is a good cheap hunting rifle works good for the price
I will agree! Savage also offers an entry level 350 legend in their Axis II series.
So when you were shooting did you not press it against your shoulder?
Yes, but I let the gun rest on the Matrix stand.
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview it was a good watch please keep them coming!
How does this cartridge differ from the 38-55 Winchester?
I'm thinking mostly the ballistics.
It's basically a 35 Remington bolt. The ballistics between the two are nearly identical out to 150. Very slight velocity advantage (50 ft) goes to the 35 Rem.
Doesn't seem very accurate to me with factory loads. Experimenting with hand loads could tighten those groups up a lot.
There are some people doing experiments with different loads and from what I hear, having some good results. Thanks for watching!
I think the biggest problem is a 1:16 twist is way to slow for it. The 358 legend (358 bullet instead of 355) the hand loaders are using has a barrel in the 1:12 range.
What is the recoil like compared to a 243?
Just bought one today for around $350 sticker price.
Nice! I wish you luck this hunting season!
Is that a 20 or 22 inch barrel? So ballistics about like a 30-30?
20" barrel yes, I believe they are real similar but legal for deer hunting in several states where 30-30 is not.
Sorry! That's the 22" barrel!
@Bill Madd I do not have enough experience with either the 30-30 or the 350 legend to be able to say. I do know you can't hunt deer in Ohio, and I believe 17 other states, with a 30-30.
@Bill Madd I was looking at muzzle velocity for 150 grain bullets from both calibers, pretty similar...
@@johnganshow5536 yeah that's what they're advertising
Scope looks cracked on top?
I didn't see any cracks, maybe a mold line or camera angle....or German Shepherd hair!! Lol. Thank you for watching.
350 Legend VS M1 carbine ?
Sadly, I do not have a M1 carbine.
They look like the same round.
Had a tad muzzle jump.......
Just a bit! Lol! Thanks for watching!
I never see people shooting 1000yds matches from the prone position, holding the front of the rifle.
Nice to know and thanks for sharing. Are you sure it's 25-35 lb ft? or in/lb or in/oz?
More later.
It's the gun . Do some reviews of the Mossberg Patriot. Theyre terrible with accuracy. Trust me it isn't u...gun is not a good rifle period
I hope so, I mean, I'm no professional marksman but I was beginning to wonder. Thanks for the ego boost! Lol Thanks for watching too!
I have two mossberg patriots. 243 and 6.5 prc. Both shoot sub-moa. Maybe this rifle is just new or the ammo just sucks, or the scope is loose.
@@TexanUSMC8089 It's defiantly a new rifle, it might get better after a break in.
The best excuse would be it isnt your gun....
And it is not!
The patriot was the worse rifle I have ever bought in my life. After horrible customer service I sold it and lost 70.00.
I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you invested in something you like better. Thank you for watching!
