Hi Crispen, can I ask what route you took? Myself and my son attempted at the start of early September from the Linn of Dee but we had to turn back because my bike rack broke when the bag jumped off and got wedged on the inside between the wheel and the rack! We will try again in the spring. We got different different opinions in routes to take from walkers we spoke to.
Hi We went up over Carn a' Mhaim. This was a good way up, some of it rideable. The ridge across the top was technical but mostly rideable too. However, the scree/ boulder climb up to Ben Macdui was horrible and dangerous as it was easy to slip off a boulder and twist a foot. This is not recommended if you are carrying a load on your bike as it seems you are. I think the easiest way up Ben Macdui is from the North leaving from the Ski Centre

could this route be done on a hardtail? or is double suspension essential ??
Its quite rocky but a Hardtail can ride any trail. If thats what you ride then it'll do fine. If you have a choice then the FS will be a bit faster
