Yes Historians refer to the Greek empire as the Byzantine in order to differentiate between the Latin Easterns and Western Empires. Greeks at the time referred to it as the Roman Empire, and themselves as Romans.
@@DuelyusSeazerIt clearly wasn't the Roman Empire even for medieval people. They simply called it Greek Empire, Greeks, Eastern Empire, Byzantium, Empire or Kingdom of Costantinople and the like. Nobody except themselves saw them as the real continuation of the Roman Empire, but the whole world already knew it was a distinct thing. Many saw themselves as the Roman Empire, including the Ottomans, but those claims weren't really shared by their contemporaries.
The Byzantine empire wasnt the continuation of Rome it was the Eastern Roman Empire Rome in its remaining territories that situated in the east and thus had a greek culture and language but were still ROMAN through identity.
It was indeed the continuation of the Roman empire. For the Romans back then the empire wasn't divided, it was still one empire but with two different courts. The division was purely administrative. Many modern countries are internally divided in different states, provinces, etc and we don't consider them to be separated.
I wish that if one of the imperial factions controls majority of imperial culture lands it could then change its name to just "Empire" or "Calradic Empire" signifying its unification
Great video, one point of criticism, you spoke of the Hagia Sophia and showed us the Blue Mosque, built about 1000 years after Hagia Sophia and it never served as a chapel/church, found not far from your subject actually - 7:00
7:09 Hagia Sofia was never a roman catholic church, if you refer to the Church union as making it catholic, then the term to be used would be "Greek Catholic" or "Eastern Catholic" Hagia Sofia has never been a Latin Church.
cool. a video on everything that i could go to wikipaedia and learn about. i'd much rather watch a video about the ACTUAL history of the bannerlord geography.
@@ResonantRTS really? warhammer40k isnt real and it has a history. so did world of warcraft. so does lord of the rings. so does star trek. so does star wars. seems like everything else does. but not this game? either the creators of the game are really stupid, or it just possibly you?
The Byzantine Empire is more of a modern (eg. 1800s+) terminology. It was always called the Roman Empire because it was the Eastern Roman Empire.
This ⬆️. Otherwise, great video.

So did most contemporaries. They didn't become known as Byzantines or anything other than eastern Romans really until well after their decline/fall.
But it wasn't the toman empire

Great way to support shameless shills. Proud of you.

for all intents and purposes it was, especially after the fall of the western empire.

Great series m8, looking forward to more of these real history comparisons
1:40 no, not at one point in time. They have always been the Eastern Roman Empire.
This is so cool! Looking forward to the next episode!

This would be awesome. I did it in one of my playthroughs named my kingdom Better Battania.

Go back and do Warband, too!
All hail his grace, Emperor Garios!
Another banger bro, you never miss.
My favourite game been completely abandoned by the devs. Took the millions and ran off without bothering to add basic diplomacy
All road lead to Rome, or Constantinople
All empires die, eventually.
Did they abandon this game on xbox?
