$25, ten minutes and two tools! VW rear hatch latch replacement! SAVE $$$

- Over the weekend my wife went to Santa Fe for a friend's wedding, and she called me stating that the rear hatch on her 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen wouldn't latch, and it was making a strange whirring noise. She left it for the night and went to the auto parts store the next day and found some red duct tape and taped the hatch shut.
When I got back from South Carolina, first things first...let's all marvel at the amazing tape job and color match! But that doesn't seem like a very long-term solution.
A little diagnostics were done and it was determined that the electric mechanism was the fault, so I went on Amazon and ordered this:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
It arrived the next day and fixed the latch perfectly. FYI, you will need an 8mm triple square, not the 7mm as mentioned in the video. Sorry for the confusion.
So if you're having the same problem, the solution is only $25 and ten minutes of your time.

Ugh, I *just* read this comment after having special ordered a 7mm triple square, tried it on the screw and realized it was too small. I hope you get a good commission from the ONE company that actually sells the very odd 7mm triple square
@@mikeboyd79 Unfortunately there's no way for me to edit the video once it's published. I did put in the description that you need an 8mm (not a 7mm) triple square, and I don't get commission from anyone selling tools...just a simple mistake.
@@AutoAnatomy bro found out 2 years later 💀
thank you soooo much !! the dealership was trying to charge me $800-$900 parts and labor ! said the part itself was $648💀… i just got it off amazon same price . im about to go and install it now🤞🏾!
Superb. Thank you for this video. You've saved me considerable grief and expense.
Thank you!
Thanks for showing that. I bought a replacement latch but I’m told I should also get the actuator (the handle in the middle of the door under the VW logo button). I don’t know if the part I am sourcing online is right for my 2009 Rabbit.
just wanted to say thank you for making this video. watched this video on a Friday, ordered the new lock on Friday, got the 8mm triple square on Sunday and swapped it out on my moms Sportwagon in less than 12 minutes 👍🏼
Glad I could help
I received a panic called from my daughter at 6:50 AM that her trunk won't close, I'm in Toronto and she's in Ottawa. We faced timed, I started to google and your video pop up. In less then 10 minutes she was back on the road. Thank you for you service :)
So glad she is safe and back on the road!
Thanks, this will help me diagnose and repair my 04 Passat
Hi Sean.
This was a easy one to repair.. 😉
If just any time it would be that easy! 😎 But often it's a mess how the engineers develop and create components and repair friendliness!
This saved me so much money thank you so much. VW part costs 250. mechanic wanted over 500 dollars to fix this. Only cost me 25 dollars. After market parts for the win!
Thanks, and congrats on getting yours fixed!
this is some solid advice from a guy who just fixed multiple things you may also be experiencing with a seat ibiza for only about £12. if your boot/trunk is NOT latching closed at all meaning you can open the boot up even if the car is locked its a potential possibility that you need to replace the latch its self the reason is because inside the boot latch mechanism there is a motor that can go faulty which often means you will hear absolutely no sound coming from the latch OR if there is sound but it still does work this could mean the plastic gear has broken apart from the worm gear, after taking apart my old broken boot latch (which is a non serviceable part so i dont recommend doing) i found that it was likely the motor that had failed. SECOND ISSUE is if the boot is NOT opening from the outside of the car but opens via the little white switch from the inside of the boot there is likely an issue with the electrical connection (loose wires ban conductivity) so just try unplugging and replugging in the boot latch connector to work of any potential oxidation etc etc. another reason could also be that inside the boot handle (the thing with the silver seat logo on it) the little conductor is fault or broken causing the circuit to be unable to be closed to fix this i would recommend replacing or trying to repair the switch so that the two contacts meet with eachother. goodluck!
THANK YOU!!! Our Jetta SW (2012) had the same thing happen last week. Cost me $65 (I didn't have the tools) but the fix worked like a charm!!
Great! So glad it worked out for you!
This video helped me replace a failed VW MK5 hatch latch -- The 8mm triple square was not easy to find. Thank you!
Thanks, and glad it helped!
Same think happened to mine on a camping trip after ten years of stuffing the trunk with too many sleeping bags.
Wow - U literally saved me so much time and money - Everything worked exactly as u showed it - Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
You’re welcome! Glad it worked!
Hey man, thanks very much for making that video, It sounds exactly like what's going on with my scirocco. Your instructions were so clear I'm going to order a part and have a go at repairing it myself. Thanks again. Colin Northern Ireland
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much...Mine has been problematic for a while and finally just gave up. On war with the fix! Cheers!!
Glad to help!
Great vid, thanks. I have just had exact same issue on my Mk 6 GTD. I feel confident I can do the same fix after watching your vid. Excellent!! 👍🏼
Thank you, and you can do it!
Thank you for this video. Had the exact same problem. Got the parts. Fixed it myself. And I’m a girl. So, you ladies out there, you can do this!!
Right on! So glad it helped
Great video! Easy to follow directions and made this way more affordable than going to the dealership or the shop. Thank you!
*wish I’d seen the note that it’s 8mm not 7mm, but all good. Still very appreciative.
Thanks!
Very well done and very clear
Thank you!
Spectacular! Thanks!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching
Perfect
Exact problem
Exact Noise!
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
Just a quick bonus video, this time VW rear hatch repair.
Look for a new 1952 Chevy video this Friday!
Thank you so much !!
You’re welcome!
Thank you so much! after searching for a solution for a couple of weeks I was fortunate to find your video. It was such an inexpensive and easy repair! Now do you have any suggestions on how to make the hatch pop open with the fob? we bought the car used and it's never worked that way but it looks like it should pop open when you press the trunk button on the fob.
I can confirm on my 2015 GTI MK7 that the bolts are 8mm XZN
Thanks for the video. It helps. Nevertheless, I have difficulties to put the plastic cover back, do you have any special technic? (It looks so easy in your video)
What year JSW? I picked up a 7M triple square for my 2012 and it's too small!
I'm having the same issue with my trunk right now. Will this part fit in any type of VW?
I have a VW GTI 2013
Nice video! Just curious... did this repair last for you (this video is now 3 years old)? The 1-star comments on the amazon part you linked to seemed to have a lot of people complaining that the replacement part failed after a few weeks/months.
Yes, still working perfectly!
I am unable to open using remote, switch in the door......an audible sound is there from the boot lock while i press the remote or door switch....... now using the key to open the boot (polo sedan..... vento...)
What could be the reason?? Boot gets locks firmly and can be opened by inserting the key
i wonder if epoxying that screw would work
Did not look at comments that the mm of the tool mentioned in the video was wrong and spent the money to buy the 7 mm triple square tool, which was of course the wrong size. I also wish the video had been corrected.
Does the backup camera stop working in this situation - prior to the fix? 2014 TDI JSW
Ours continued to work even when the latch was malfunctioning
Can i lock it manually with any method while i wait for the part? i dont have any duct tape on me and i need to drive
Sadly I don't think there's a way to lock it manually.
Just did this myself, after thinking it would be some stupid $1,500 repair ended up being $25
Glad it worked for you!
doing this tomorrow with my 2014 Tiguan. Nervous!
You got this!!
@@AutoAnatomy I did fix it!
Love how he never mentions in the comments or edits the video to show that you need a 8mm triple square not 7mm. Great stuff 😐
I've since replaced the computer that I created this video on, so it's not super easy to go back and modify it once published to RUclips. But I can put it in the comment section and description
Sounds like a you problem
