For full show notes, visit the blog at; humblemechanic.com/?p=4694
This is a trunk latch and release motor from a MK5 Jetta. This latch also fits other VW models. I replaced one in a EOS last week. Remember to have your VIN available to be sure you get the correct part the first time.

I had a related issue with my 09 jetta sportwagen. in my case, it was just the switch in the handle above the licence plate. i found a bit of corrosion in the switch's electrical connector. i sprayed it with some contact cleaner but that didn't do the trick, so i verified the problem by jumping the two terminals in the wiring harness, and that actuated the latch, so i removed the switch assembly, and disassembled it until i could slide the microswitch out, there was some serious carbon scoring on one of the terminals. So, i scraped it off with a flathead, hit it with some more contact cleaner, and reinstalled it. works great so far.
i'd be sure to check this before ordering a latch mech. from VW parts.

Thank you for the excellent video - my 2012 Tiguan latch failed this week and wouldn't close. I was able to "fiddle" with the latch a few times and get it to latch, so the spring was probably just losing tension. Interestingly there would also be a sputtering sound when releasing the closed latch. Got it replaced at a shop today... $290 all told.

Great informative video Charles, thanks for the insight!
Is it also a sign if the boot / truck when you close it has a lot of play / movement. I'm finding that I have to give mine a bit of a slam to close it properly, then there's no movement.
I also looked for videos on the latch, as my boot light switches on when I'm about to close it, but have about 12 inches space gap...I then see it come on?
I was thinking maybe there's a wire connection problem, or it's the latch.
    I've subscribe!

@HumbleMechanic Thanks for sharing very educational videos. I know my comment is several years late :)
I came across this video while I am researching power lift hatch "closure" issue on my 2008 Passat Wagon 2.0T . Hope I could get some advice from your expertise if you see this comment.
First of all, I have no issue to pop open my power lift hatch with three methods: driver side door panel switch, key fob and release button on the hatch above license plate. Open always works perfectly fine. However, my issue is closure. I have been playing quite a bit and narrowing the replicable symptoms down like these:
    1) After the hatch was pop open, MFD dash board correctly shows the truck open.
    2) Often, the trunk light is off though. If I press the close button on the hatch, it won't respond. Only click sound comes from the button itself. No motor or any other noises.
    3) However, if I adjust the hatch height manually. Then long press the close button. The tail lights flash and the height seem set correctly. (So, I assume the close button has no contact issues?)
    4) Then, I use my finger to press the book lock a few times while the hatch is at open position. Sometimes if I pressed too hard to make it into lock position, I use key fob to switch it back to open position. Through this process, often the trunk light comes on. Then, I press the close button, the hatch closes itself perfectly. No weird noises other than motor sounds.
Given the issues above, I guess the issues should not be motors or structs, etc. But either close button connector or boot lock. I am more inclined to boot lock.
Maybe some parts of boot lock have contact/corrosion issues. But I don't know where to check more if I pull out the boot lock. Someone on a Reddit post said he solved the exact same issues by taking out the boot lock and clean it with sand paper. But I don't know where to sand :)
Also, very curious which part/mechanism of boot lock triggered the trunk light. It seems the close button only works when the trunk light comes on.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

I have a 2000 VW Beetle 1.8L turbo and it's a 5 speed manual transmission. I recently had the timing belt, water pump, coolant flange and serpentine belt all replaced. However when I got it back I was driving on the highway going about 70mph when motor was jumpy and the rpm arm was moving back and forth. So I put it in neutral slowed down and the battery light came on and the engine was off, and the lights were on for a bit. So I waited for a minute and it started back up but before it starts it acts like it doesn't want to turn over and then it starts. I know you might not know the exact problem from a comment on RUclips however if you have any ideas based off of what I described I would love to know. Thanks in advance!

I have a 2006 TDI Jetta. I bought it in the summer in Phoenix AZ. In the winter the trunk started refusing to latch and even refusing to open but when I took it to the dealership under warranty in Tucson, they always just reported that they could not duplicate the problem and now 13 years later guess what? As soon as I go camping and the temp goes into the 50s or below I have to slam the trunk about ten times to get it to latch.. Then (after it is latched) when I go to lock the car, the car insists that the trunk is not latched so I have to go out and rock my weight on the trunk until it finally beeps telling me that the car is now locked. I wish I could go back in time when the car was under warranty and confront the dealership back when they were shrugging their shoulders! Do you think a brand new latch will make this thing behave?

You known if the hatch lock cylinder of the Mk5 Passat (variant), is hard-linked to the movement of the electric actuator? Mine's an old beater on its last few years. Pre my ownership,, I guess either someone hammered a screwdriver in there, or the leaking wiper motor (now fixed) got to it and gummed it all up. So I can't get the key in, and I can't turn it.
I don't mind if it can't be unlocked with the key. But the actuator for central locking was busted. I'm about to install a new one, but if the lock cyliner is jammed, it would be good to know if that seizes up the whole thing. I don't want to burn out the new actuator, trying to move the stuck cylinder. If the electric actuation of the lock opererates independently, that's great. Of they're hard linked, I gotta figure out the lock cylinder first.

The problem with my MK5 Jetta is a little different: it will not open by using either the key FOB or the switch that is in the door. (I had a similar problem due to a bad FOB but the door switch still worked) I have changed the latch, but the problem is not solved.
I do not think that the problem is an electrical one with the door, for the gas cover release switch that is next to the one for the trunk operates normally. Why ideas?

Hello, I'm a huge vw fanatic, i have a 2010 vw polo 9n3 shape, but the vivo, so it does't have a keyhole on the handle, theres a slot on the inside, for some reason, the boot/trunk doesn't open when i pull the handle, i can hear the microswitch, the motor and mechanisms work, i pulled the cover off, touched around there, then it worked fine for the day. Then the next day it doesn't wanna work. Any idea of what it might be? Kinda annoying having to pull the seat forward every time i need the boot/trunk?

Hey! So my girlfriend and I just purchased a mk6 golf. The rear hatch is stuck closed, and the emergency release does not work. Im afraid im going to have to cut the latch mechanism with an angle grinder in order to get it open so I can replace the latch.
The issue with this latch is that the electronics work, but the latch itself is rusted shut.
I plan to load the new latch with grease when I replace it, but any tips on getting it open without damaging the striker bar? I already have the trunk trim off, but cannot get the plastic panel off until the trunk is open, so I cannot unbolt the latch until I cut it open.
Im afraid of damaging other things in the process, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I have a 2014 Seat which is a vagcom car too so probably shares this VW part. I think mines is the electronic have failed in mine as it latches and can still be manually opened and closed. no noise can be heard at all coming from the boot when key is pressed. do i look at it myself. i mostly know what to do or do i go no where near it as its under warranty. its booked into the garage already but if they find that its actually my fault itss failed its gonna cost me so much just for them too have a look at it. is it possible for me to have broken this in order to void the warranty such as when its cold the latch would be frozen solid but i broke it free of the frost and it wouldnt open but did open once the car had completely defrosted. ihave also had it open since this occasion but then last weekend it failed... so touch or dont touch?

Hi my mk5 golf boot won't close. I believe it's the latch as it doesn't click shut when I try do it with a screw driver. As well as this, my rear windscreen wipers do not function due to it not closing. Is that normal? Or is there another problem other than the latch?

    • @HumbleMechanic

Nasim It is most likely the latch. Be sure to take a close look at the wiring too. I have seen some of the wires corrode. But if the latch will not "latch" then the wiper will not work either.

Hey, thanks for the informative video.
    My Jetta does the following:
Boot closes without a problem, but wont open by hand (using the switch located in the trunk exterior) BUT it does open if you hold the trunk button on the vehicle key (the remote).
    Could you make any suggestions?
    Thanks

What about the box in the truck of a 1994 VW golf that controls the locking of the doors.
It’s like a motor that keeps running after the doors are locked.
It’s not in the manual :(

I have a Seat Ibiza 1.2 SC TDI E-ecomotive ..lock is the same, I have no boot light, any ideas? @HumbleMechanic . It's not the bulb, it's not the connections on the side(remove the two multiconnectors, one yellow and one black and reconnect them), It's not the diode on the bulb-holder, maybe the connector on the lock? ...any ideas would be lovely

I have an 09 eos. Before, when working properly, i close the trunk, then a motor sucks the trunk down the rest of the way and latches it. I am now have the problem where when i try to shut the trunk, nothing happens at all. When I raise the trunk up the latch appears to work properly. I can close it manually and open it with both the remote and the emergency latch. Any thoughts on the diagnosis of this issue? I think it has something to do with whatever mechanism pulls the trunk lid down but im not familiar enough with how the trunk operates to be able to tell. Any help would certainly be appreciated.

I went to the dealer to get a new FOB for my MK5 Jetta because my old FOB
would not open the trunk. After getting the FOB and informing the dealer that
the new FOB would not open the trunk, I was told that I needed to replace the
trunk latch. I followed the DIY RUclips video that DAP did to replace the
latch, only to find out that the problem remained despite the installation of
the new latch. Do you have any other suggestions as to what the likely culprit
is that keeps the FOB from opening the trunk?
    Thanks for all the help.

Check for power and ground at the latch. Did the old key work?

I have a situation where my right rear backup light on indicates not working, as that happened, my hatch won't open and my rear windshield wiper won't work...... What do you think? Fuse? Wiring harness? A confabulation of events?

@Nick R, yes. Due to the hatch being opened and closed, over time, the wiring was cut. My dealership replaced it years ago, and told me it was a common issue.

There may be a release right behind the top of the rear seats. If not, you can usually open the pass through and try to reach the inside replease
