Jack Howard is the only bloke I'll listen to talk about his opinion
depressionnapss bloke
It's the same for me, but I don't know why, because I hate the things he is into. Like I cannot sit through any marvel type movie. But somehow, I am interested in his opinion on things.
great list! I'd massively recommend American Crime Story if you haven't seen it - particular season 2, it's phenomenal.
that show is incredible but season one was _so_ much better imo
i binged all of fleabag in one sitting and it was the best decision i ever made
Same! Highly recommend watching "Crashing" if you haven't already! Brilliant too 😍
Same ! It was brilliant !
@@CatsRants thank you for the recommendation :)
If you're reading this pls watch this show-s2 ep 1 _is_ a masterpiece!!
yess oh i loved it and "kneel" oh my
I’ve never watched stranger things, I lied to my friends so I wouldn’t seem weird, I needed to get this off my chest
Clickbaitaesthetic iss okay 💜
Me too you're not alone
it’s good but not groundbreaking imo, so you’re good
Pandakookie21 friends don’t lie (reference)
Clickbaitaesthetic • me neither. It simply doesn’t appeal to me. Whenever that’s the case I’m not forcing myself, I watch enough as it is.
We gonna get a good the bad and the just plain sh*t parts of 2019?
OliverObz my first thought soon as I saw the Notification
We can hope!!
Let's make a summoning circle and see if it works
If we don’t it’ll feel so weird 😟
Ball's deep!
COMPLETELY agree on Sex Education. Perfectly introduces multiculturalism without appearing to be 'pandering' or making a social statement. Really looking forward to Season 2
i mean it's a show about healthy sexual education... that's kinda a social statement in itself
I felt like the writing was really lacking imo
Pingu Nootson What ? This show is the best written show about teenagers. It’s masterpiece.
10) Stranger things
9) I think you should leave
8) The Watchmen
7) This way up
6) Russian Doll
5) Sex Education
4) The end of the fucking world
3) Euphoria
2) Unbelievable
1) Fleabag
Thanks
Ithaelol Neli
“Unbelievable” is truly a masterpiece.
killing eve! made by the woman who made fleabag as well and it’s just as magnificent but in a different way and i adore it
Kind of surprised that "Barry" is not on your list.. then again, no clue if you've watched it at all
agree, it's SUCH a great show, would highly recommend
Mindhunter and Homecoming were also great
Loved Good Omens this year, perfect casting and was incredibly fun to watch
That was also definitely a favourite, so much so that I watched it 2 times straight after finishing it
Good omens was so good! I also really loved the looking for Alaska series! Such a good adaptation of that book!
I COMPLETELY agree with you on mistrusting the hot priest the first time and having a completely different experience on the rewatch!!
Just so you know Jack, "The End of the F***ing World" S1 WAS originally a comic book. The director then had ideas as to how to continue the series, though the book ended where S1 had..
Personally, as much as I loved S1, I hated how it ended, and am SO happy a 2nd season was made :)
Alice White_1 I stared at my tv screen in shock too many times. When bonnie imagined shooting James and Alyssa I screamed and died
Fleabag season 2 was so incredible.
Barry season 2 was also one of the best shows of the year. 100% would recommend.
leonerdmccoy SO GOOD, bill hader is incredible
May I recommend 'The essence of a penguin' from Atypical s3 e6, really was a standout episode from a standout show for me :)
Atypical was an incredible show delving into so many good topics. It was so amazing to watch.
Yes!!
Somewhat sad "Good Omens" is not on the list as it was one of my favourites this year.
The best for me were: The Boys; a different look at the superhero genre and Karl Urban is fantastically diabolical. Barry; a depressed assassin decides to become an actor, but can't shake his previous life off. The way that unchecked mental health is handled is so fantastically done, but it's still so super funny. Plus, big ass crush on Bill Hader. Big Mouth, I watched all three seasons in one go, its gross and I get it; not everyones cup of tea, but, it gets very real about a lot of how shitty growing up is. Plus, John Mulaney. Brooklyn Nine Nine; always fantastic, still awesomley funny - I watch it when I can't sleep. I can't wait for the new season. :D
Same here! I've watched a lot of superhero TVs and movies, but The Boys might be the best one yet. The character development and reveals are sensational. One of my favourite things is how the team comes together through their different motivations
Jack Howard, how dare you copy RUclips rewind 😂
I highly recommend "Atypical" you should like it base on your test you just exposed
atypical stereotypes autistic ppl a little :(((
derry girls was my personal fav! incredibly funny show
thanks for the recommendation, I completely forgot that I really wanted to watch it ! How ould you describe the main tone ? I was afraid it might be too somber ^^'
@@sonmihae-joo6286 it's very fun and happy, with it taking very serious tones at times bc of the setting of course. it really nicely explores the contrast between being a teenager and falling into HUGE (very small and inconsequential) dramatic problems around every corner with the very real and actual troubles going on at that time in ireland. honestly it's just so, so, SO good and ive watched it back many times, it doesn't lose my interest
Sonmi Hae-Joo it is mostly a comedy but it still makes sure to pay respect to events at the time, no spoilers but this happens especially in the last episode in the last scene. It is something you laugh at a lot but you cry from how close the show to people even if they aren't from Derry at all.
@@katebushphotocard4505 Thank you very much for the recommendation, it's very enticing, I'll make sure to watch it ! :D
@@katematilda2169 oh I see thank you very much for the summary, I can't wait to watch it ! ^^
An upload from Jack Howard? We've been blessed this fine winters day
Hearing you speak so publicly and freely about the ways you cope with your mental health is really inspiring to me. I suffer with depression too and I use TV shows to kind of keep me safe and grounded. Stops me from spiraling. Interesting to hear you do a similar thing. Thanks for doing what you do, Jack.
This year my favourite was Years and Years. My god. It was such a brilliant show, but its political commentary was so depressing it left me feeling really awful for a whole day after watching it.
Of course there's loads more!! And currently His Dark Materials has my attention, but Years and Years is so undeniably well written, and it makes it very hard not to appreciate!
Everytime I watched an episode my anxiety CLIMED
I'd recommend Mr Robot! It's on its final season right now and it's really kicking off
YES !
Yes thank you its fucking amazing
Agreed it's amazing!
Rami Malek is brilliant, the cinematography is so good too.
Agree
I thoroughly enjoyed your Alexa ad 😂
binge-watched all the shows on this list after watching this video and wanted to come back to thank you Jack!!
Very enjoyable video as always, you never fail to entertain me. Even the sponsor part was entertaining! Loved it
Adore this way up! Was hoping you’d mention it
the evidence of female narratives in this just tells you how they are SO needed and SO well received.
And as a young female film/theatre maker this is so wonderful and inspiring to see.
thank you for recognising female work when it isn’t being highlighted by others!!
just a big well done to the girls and their stories
That black box is straight out of a Doctor who episode
Wasn’t there actually something like that? It had Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, I think, and black cubes come down from the sky one day?
@@whereisawesomeness yep, you can watch it still I think. It was an invasion of sorts. Which is funny considering these amazon ads showed up out of nowhere like the ones in the ep
Thank you for recommending stuff to watch over Christmas
Jack! Good to see a video from you again! I would love to see a top 10 films of the year at the end of this year if you’re up to it
We shall see :)
JackHoward Alright then, keep your secrets.
Thanks, the binge shall begin. I had the same reaction to the "kneel scene" in Fleabag...guess I need a rewatch. I suggest you pick up Dark, so effing good!! Also I really enjoyed Derry Girls, After Life and Mindhunters this year. Have a great Christmas mate!!
Thank you so much for recommending Unbelievable!
someone pinch me there's a new video on the Jack Howard RUclips channel
Have you seen Barry? Its actiony, comedyy, dramaticy brilliance
thanks for the rec list!!! my to watch list is stretching out into infinity. and the video was really fun ^^
I was waiting for Chernobyl in there somewhere and then it just never came. I think it surely deserves a spot on the list, but to each their own.
I wanted to watch it but in Germany it's on Sky and I already have Netflix and Amazon, so I never came around to watch it
Years And Years + After Life definitely took the top spots for me this year. Two completely different yet brilliant TV shows
Yooooo no Succession that’s easily the best show on TV the writing is incredible
I’d really really recommend Inside No. 9 if you haven’t already seen it - it’s an absolutely genius anthology series with tremendous range - the styles of the episodes are so diverse - one is entirely without dialogue, one is shown entirely through fixed-camera CCTV footage, and one is filmed on genuine 70s cameras.
All of the episodes are really good but ‘The 12 Days of Christine’ is generally considered a standout if you did want to watch it :)
Brilliant show!
I really liked Mindhunter Season 2 that came out this year, even if Season 1 was better. If you haven't watched it jet, you just have to. The Show is brilliant.
Didi still waiting for a season 3 confirmation :/
@@devinlaker9237 David Fischer said, he planed 5 Seasons. Not more, not less. Netflix confirmed it, I think. Sounds awesome. I hate when the show goes on until it gets bad.
Didi really!!! I thought the hadn’t confirmed a season 3 yet, that’s amazing!
@@devinlaker9237 Ok, so I checked it and one Media-Site said: 'Netflix hasn't confirmed Mindhunter season 3 yet, but director David Fincher at one point reportedly had plans for five total seasons. David is currently tied up with other projects, however, so for now, the Mindhunter actors have been released from their contracts.'
So I wasn't entirely right but there are so many good reviews that I don't think Netflix would end it. But David Fincher takes his time with stuff like that, so don't expect it in the near future.
I’ve seen quite a few of these but not all, interesting suggestions will definitely take a look. Russian Doll has been on my list for ages, once essay deadlines have been met thats the first thing ill be watching !
Joined the party late with Fleabag, binged the whole of series 1 Saturday night, just rewatched it with my friend who I forced to watch it with me, and who seems to love it also. Was thinking of starting the second series right now in the bath, but after what you've said about how..emotional the first episode is, I dunno if I should wait until tomorrow 😬😂
Fantastic video Jack. Haven't seen a couple of these so will check them out! P.S you set my Alexa off multiple times at the end :')
I’m really shocked years and years isn’t on this list, it was an absolute masterpiece and really hit home x
i felt weird about the “kneel” scene as well until i read the script and saw phoebes commentary on it. it totally changed my perspective on it. and the painting falling off the wall? like you said: masterpiece.
just read it and indeed it changes your perspective ! thanks for indicating it was out there :)
Yes for This Way Up! I can't believe more people aren't talking about. Aisling Bea did a fantastic job writing and acting, and I hope it gets commissioned for another series
Oh man I genuinely got nervous for a sec when you got to number one and you hadn’t mentioned fleabag!!
Thanks for the recommendations, I'll definitely check some of them out?
Hey, have you checked out "After Life" on Netflix with Ricky Gervais? I really really loved that show, it handles mental health quite well and impacted me a lot.
God I hated after life I thought it was so ham fisted
I cannot tell you how thrilled I was when you said 'Fleabag'.
It's nothing short of genius.
I immediately ran off and watched all of This way up because I love Aisling Bea and it did not disappoint. Great recommendation!
Loved this video !
Here are my absolute faves of the year :
Fleabag (same experience as you, the 1st watching season 2 I was weary of the priest, and it took me until the last two episodes to warm up to the idea that he was not just a creepy guy),
Good Omens (the chemistry between the two main characters is wonderful and I think it might be even better than the book !),
Pose (haven't watched s2 yet so I don't know if that counts but it is beautiful, the characters are amazing and diverse and well played and it could very easily veer off into being a very sad overwhelming drama on the aids crisis but it is not and it is human and joyful and sad and perfect),
Sex Education (I especially loved how when it seemed that a character, especially a girl, was behaving very weirdly from the point of view of other characters, they always made a point of then showing her point of view and how we really never know the lives of people we are so quick to judge),
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (I don't remember if season 2 came out this year or last year but it was joyfully absurd and funny and touching and went into unexpected directions and I loved it how the main actors Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood were a great duo both for the funny and the emotional scenes)
Really good, thought out list man. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend you binge Mindhunter on Netflix. It’s a criminally underrated show that deserves more attention. Amazing music soundtrack, acting, gritty atmosphere, etc.
I would also recommend Umbrella Academy! It’s wonderful and weird and dark, and the actors were all incredible
I was just desperately looking for series recommendations, so thanks
I am SO glad someone else feels that way about the "Kneel" scene.
this has given me a few more shows to add to my watch list !! i will say i was expecting after life on the list somewhere there 👀
Before watching: I really hope His Dark Materials is on here!
Love listening to your opinion about these things, definitely gonna check some of these out! I would also recommend Umbrella Academy, I absolutely loved it!
Glad to hear you’re a part of the Turbo Team
i COMPLETELY agree with your fleabag opinions! so glad someone else had the same take on the priest the first time around. the second time, it made so much more sense to me. and that first episode of series 2 is some of the best tv i think i've ever seen.
Love the video, I will definitely check out the shows I haven't watched. But have you seen Dark? The first series is better, but I wondered.
Mr. Robot is kind of an unsung masterpiece, wish more people talked about it
I think it's gonna be one of those shows that gets a lot of acclaim and attention years after the finale. I'd say it's on-par with Breaking Bad/The Wire, as do most fans, but unfortunately it just doesn't get talked about enough right now.
Thanks to your rec, I finally watched fleabag and completed both seasons in less than 24 hours. While the first season opened my eyes about sadness and grief, the second was so fucking hilarious and heartwarming, I just... I am deeply in love with this show now and I'm glad I started it yesterday.
Thanks Jack :)
THIS WAY UP!!! what a goddamn legendary show!
edit: you put fleabag at number one and now i love you even more.
Great list
I've only seen four of these, but all those four would probably land in my top 6 of 2019. Seems like we have similar tastes in TV shows, will definitely check out the ones on your list that I haven't watched.
I didn't know anything about Fleabag until I stumbled upon an interview with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and then watched a spoiler-full video essay on the entire show up to and including the second series (thinking I was unlikely to watch it anyway). Now I'm sort-of regretting that, although I might still watch it.
I would recommend you to watch it, I read a few spoiler-full articles on season 1 and 2 before watching it but it was still extremely enjoyable as a lot of the allure of this series resides not so much in the plot rather than the tone and beautifully crafted relationships between the characters :) Also the acting is terrific and you can watch each season in one sitting ^^
end of the fing world is honestly such a masterpiece and fleabag is just legendary
yeees, thank you for new recommendations!!!!
Watch The OA its one of the most unique shows I’ve ever seen and it’s incredible
My definite fav of the year!
man i watch so much tv and yet i barely recognized so many of the shows you just mentioned. can't wait to check them out. also, if you're looking for recommendations - give crazy ex girlfriend a shot. a comedy musical that perfectly captures mental health in all its darkness with the greatest payoff a show could have.
Especially since you said you don't tend to binge stuff. this one was designed for the slow burn
every single time you said alexa my echo dot turned on and tried to search for everything you said 😂😂
This way up is actually amazing
10. Stranger Things 3 0:34
9. I Think You Should Leave 1:14
8. WATCHMEN 1:46
7. This Way Up 2:26
6. Russian Doll 3:11
5. Sex Education 3:55
4. The End of the F***ing World 2 4:46
3. Euphoria 5:43
2. Unbelievable 6:43
1. Fleabag 7:26
great list! this video is the kick up the ass i needed to finally go and check out fleabag. also, this isn't a 'WHY WASN'T THIS SHOW ON HERE!??!?!' comment but was just wondering if you've seen Russell T Davies years and years? such a phenomenal show and thoroughly recommend
I haven't seen any of the shows on this list (though several are on my to watch list!) but my personal favourite this year is Years and Years. Loved it and thought it was very good.
This is such a good list! I have a few new things to check out now, thank you!!
If you haven't seen it yet, I really recommend Barry. I watched both seasons over 2 months ago and I have thought about it every gotdamn day since. The directing is stunning and visceral, the writing is tight and clever and painful and funny as fuck, and the acting is literally indescribable. Definitely one of those darker shows I wouldn't recommend to everyone, there was one scene that was so tense and upsetting I had to watch it through my fingers while standing on the other side of my room. And then there were moments where I had to pause it bc I was laughing so hard and missed the dialogue. I've never seen anything like it and cannot sing its praises enough !!
Hey Jack, would love to know your thoughts on the Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 3 (if you watch it)?
Happy bday
Mr Robot definitely deserves your attention, comfortably in the top three shows of the decade!
I love The Politician with Ben Platt. I've watched it all twice (maybe three times)
Hey Jack. Have you seen the Marvel series Legion? I'd highly recommend it because there's no other series like it!
So fucking confusing tho 😂 loved series 1 and 2 couldn’t handle season 3 need to re watch it, got too confused
I totally had the same feeling about the hot priest in Fleabag! Thank god I wasn't the only one who didn't trust him the first time around.
Also...nice to see your face again!
YES this makes me so happy! I love hearing what you have to say :)
jack I thought you'd mention HBO's Barry.. it looks like something you'd really like, and I very much recommend it, it's easily my fav show of the year
Yes, This Way Up is the best! I loved and watched it through multiple times and more people need to see it.
I’m totally not interested in this content and still watching because YOU’RE BACK and I needed this.
hey jack have you seen the OA? i would love to hear what you thought of it?
Looking fresh and fly Jackie boi
My absolute favorite series of 2019 was by far Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. So beautifully done, so magical, so goooooood.
I AM SO GLAD YOU FOUND THE 'KNEEL' SCENE CREEPY! I thought I was the only one!
yes! Russian Doll was also one of my absolute favourites this year!
I experienced Russian Doll just as you! It was a great binge for me. I’ll watch it again sometime ☺️
Excellent list but I can’t do mine yet as Im so hyped for the Expanse S4 and it’s not out until next week
The ones I’ve seen from this list I totally agree with!
Russian Doll was great and not talked about enough ! Thanks for mentioning it!!
I LOVED the BBC's 'World On Fire' this year!!!
You had my Alexa so confused lol.
I
love
this
list
Atypical was an amazing watch, highly recommend
