There are a couple of colleges (I went to one of them), a museum, and some other things there that the track would have been built around. I'm not accusing anyone, but those small cities across the Hudson River are somewhat notorious for corrupt dealings regarding development projects. Also, F1 isn't alone in failing to crack into the NYC metro area. Years ago, NASCAR attempted to build a track on Staten Island. And if I remember correctly, they bought some land between a landfill and a polluted waterway. Yeah, it went no where.
While I agree it'd be great to see F1 at Watkins Glen as a life-long New Yorker, it's only FIA Grade 2. Meaning Herman Tilke or someone else would need to "upgrade it" to FIA Grade 1 Standards for it to host F1. Do we really want Tilke ruining yet another race track? Especially given how it's one of the most popular tracks on the NASCAR schedule. I doubt NASCAR (who mind you owns The Glen) would want to make changes to it unless they were absolutely necessary. In particular, the Esses would probably need to be reworked, not to say they are a safety hazard but rather they'll be perceived as one. Roger Penske, on the other hand, would probably happily welcome F1 back to Indianapolis. They did have an FIA Grade 1 license for the road course also before it expired in 2019. I doubt it'd be that difficult to get it ready for F1, especially now with the chicane to bypass speedway turn 1 to make a repeat of 2005 impossible. Hell, I'd wager he'd promote the race himself if he somehow couldn't find one
f1 has planned to host races in almost every country in the world but never happened here are some of that countrys and its cities like algeria, australian gp in sydney, belarus in minsk, bulgaria, chile, croatia, cuba, denmark, egypt, finland, french gp in paris, german gp in berlin, greece, indonesia, ireland, israel, jamaica, new zealand, netherlands gp in amsterdam, north korea, norway, poland, qatar, russian gp in moscow, chez, spanish gp in madrid, swedish gp in stockholm, thailand and as you mentioned new york city and also virginia, lousiana, orlando, florida, california and north carolina and also canadian gp in toronto.
As an american, I'd love a another race, especially in the east coast. I live near washington DC, and the closest grand prix is actually the canadian grand prix, with COTA being about 1000 miles further from me then gilles villeneuve
I mean, it wasn't actually going be in New York City, it was going to be in New Jersey and called "New York City" and I would have both called it the New Jersey GP and would have gone to the race, since it would have been a Formula One race in my home state Edit: I don't know why the state of New Jersey didn't help fund the race, since it would have been an opportunity to put New Jersey on a global stage
I'm from New Jersey, I remember them trying to plan this in the 2010's. Formula E makes it happen in Brooklyn. But F1 is a totally different animal. Also it would make sense for it to be in Jersey. Everything New York is actually from New Jersey. Statue of Liberty, yea that land is technically in NJ, the NY Jets and Giants, they play at Metlife, in New Jersey and the stadium they played in before that was right next to it, before being torn down. So planning something in New Jersey but saying it's New York is pretty common, just look at the the 2014 Superbowl that was at that same Metlife stadium in East Rutherford New Jersey, but all of the promos and logos had the empire state building and the freedom tower as if it was in New York. But hey, I can't blame them, the best view of New York is from New Jersey. That's why New Yorkers hate New Jersey cause we have all of their stuff and a great view of Manhattan, while all they have is a shitty view of New Jersey.
That was pure gold man! Also from Jersey, Bergen County, I remember when they were planning it as well. I was pretty bummed out when it fell through. I went to Weekhaken to see Coulthard's test on the street which was super awesome. Great post!
I remember (not so much the year) a feature Autosport magazine promoted where contributers suggested Street Circuits in the UK for use by F1. One of these was at Kingston upon Thames, which featured roundabouts as hairpins on a couple of occasions, a tunnel under the John Lewis Superstore and a bridge over the River Thames
I live just outside of NYC, I think a race would be great to have in the New York area but it’s a tricky thing to coordinate. A picturesque circuit in manhattan is pretty much out of the question with many of the tight streets so you would have to look at a circuit somewhere else. You would pretty much have to build a circuit from scratch and I think a place like Floyd Bennet Field could be a nice place for it but than you would have to build the whole circuit and New York being New York, you would probably need a subway line to it. But logistics wise, it’s right by the airport which is always a plus. So I would love to see it but the funding would be the main setback.
I live and have grown up in New York. The number of people, lack of space, and noise issue would make it literally impossible to actually hold it in the city. It would have to be Long Island, or New Jersey or something. It also is just not car country. I am literally the only legit F1 fan I have ever known from NYC. I would not be surprised if a race would be met with protests about noise, pollution, and closures, kind of like when indycar tried to go to Boston. Not to mention the fact that the money used to put it up could be used much more effectively to fix public transit or help the homeless. FE works because it is a much smaller track, venue, and has no noise issue. Most New Yorkers don’t even know it exists. I just could not see an F1 race actually happening in the big apple. As much as I personally would love it, the city itself would hate it, and rightly so.
As someone who lives in the area and has driven through the streets of the proposed F1 track, some history here: - The shopping complex and parking garage that is where the pit complex would be originally was just a flat open-air parking lot. This is why they would have been able to put the infield complex there. - This track would have an INCREDIBLE set of elevation changes. The east side of the track (where the frontstretch would be) is about 10 feet above sea level. The west side is on top of the Palisades (BTW, I've never heard it said the way Josh said it here... the second A tends to be long, not short, rhyming with "made") is at least 150 feet higher, if not more. - If you check the map shown at around 3:15 and 5:11 in the video (of which the top is facing west, basically), the roadway on the left all the way to the end of the chicane is uphill. Think Eau Rouge at Spa with the top being like Turn 3 at Spielberg. The entire upper part of the roadway is Boulevard East, and then from that 90-degree right turn through to the hairpin on the lower-right is all steadily downhill (which is the area past the sewage treatment plant). - The roadway from the hairpin to the west is 2 lanes each way and comportably wide, but the roads it turns onto after that, including the frontstretch, are not that wide, especially at this point. This may have changed in recent years due to construction, but those roads are one lane each way and significantly narrower. With the construction the way it is at that location, there is really no decent way to put a layout there anymore. The pit exit actually would be going right through at least one building in the area's current status. Most of the housing in the area, especially the lower area, is all condominiums now. Much of that space was not as built up that long ago. Also, there are portions of the Boulevard East part of the track which only have a short sidewalk area and a short wall before what is basically a cliff face. It's this area which would give the most impressive views of the Manhattan skyline. However, one thing to note is that the most immediate view would be of central Manhattan, not the more famous southern part of Manhattan. The other side of the Boulevard East part of the track would be a mixture of single- and multi-family houses with a few apartments thrown in. Oh, and for the American history buffs: The Weehawken Dueling Grounds, site of the Hamilton-Burr duel, is just south of the track on Boulevard East. If anyone has any other questions about the area or whatnot, feel free to ask. I'll do the best I can to answer them.
I was literally just thinking this, plus we already have an IndyCar street circuit. Granted I don’t know a whole lot of the differences between the two series so I don’t know how F1 would be on that circuit or if it would need to be adjusted.
I wanna see a Cape Town street circuit race tbh. Especially around the Waterfront area. Imagine table mountain in the background. I may have to make a video on this..

As an American F1 fan I would love to see more F1 GPs in the states. I loved when they had the Long Beach GP and was sad to see it go. COTA is awesome but a street course in New York or another US metro city would be cool. Maybe go back to Vegas? Just not in the parking lot of Caser's Palace

No, most Americans don't care about F1 and NYC would just be a logistical nightmare. If you want a second date in the US, work to get another track up to F1 standards. Like Sebring, Road America, Watkins Glen, or Sonoma.
I think that with two dates, it should rotate a bit. Go to Long Beach. Go to New York. Go to Miami. But, stay at COTA. Let that one date be the same year on year but let the other tour the country with a variety of venues and such.
Honestly as an American f1 fan its really disappointing to see that not many people here are in to f1 at all or even motorsports in general unless its Nascar
Its called Formula E these days because the transition from petrol to electricity has been quite significant.. But its quite baffling that there are no FE races happening in America while the rest of the world is very common, as football (soccer) is a global thing.. I guess you Americans like to separate yourself from the rest of the world?.
I just want F1 to go back to the Indianapolis Road Course. It seems good races usually happened at the track, yet the race most think of anymore is the 2005 event when 14 cars withdrew before the start. I'd love for them to return next year with the new car, and create better memories.
As someone who’s never been to an F1 race that lives in Hudson County and birthday is in mid June where the race would’ve taken place, I truly would’ve been the happiest man on earth.
If F1 really wants to have a second race in the US, probably should just go back to Indy. It already has the FIA Grade 1 status required for a track and would be a lot easier and cost effective than a street circuit. There's a different layout there now and besides new tires were developed to handle banking if they ran the old layout.
I agree. Indy would make more sense. I feel like they are wasting their time trying to race at places in the u.s that have no intrest in the sport and are not familar with
If they decided to give Sebring the US gp, they would need to get rid of the old concrete from the old days of being a US ww2 air base, which I feel it would erase quite a bit of character to the track, and they maybe will end making it a hockemhring clone.
@@ihaveone6086 Grosjean has a video on his RUclips channel of him testing at Laguna Seca and he said that the F1 car probably wouldn't be able to handle the corkscrew. His estimation is the nose sits too low and at the bottom of the corkscrew it would probably end up getting damanged.

While I'm not a fan of multiple races in a single country, a very solid case can be made for the US. It's an affluent country with decent circuits, great facilities, a lot of fans, and the country also spans an immense geographic area. That said, if the circuit added/chosen is anything *other* than the Indianapolis road course, it would be a farce. Indy isn't just unique; with the exception of 05, it has consistently produced some of the most exciting races on the calendar (at a time when overtaking was scarce). I would honestly trade COTA for Indy without a moment's hesitation.
I would rather think about other tracks in the US such as Watkins Glenn, Indy, even Laguna Sega, anything other than making a street circuit in a busy area of the NYC area. F1 History says that street circuits in the US don't exactly bode well.
That would be mega. Isn't there a natural cave tunnel along that route? Or do it along the Ben Franklin Parkway with all the nation's flags lining the guardrails.
@@Halifauxer The cave tunnel is part of an unused rail line. The city has long term plans/ideas to turn it into a bike/ped trail, but it would be super hard to access and very expensive to develop.

It's already a decent track nonetheless, I mean just compare it to that horrible Miami parking lot track.
Just hope Tilke won't ruin it.
f1 has planned to host races in almost every country in the world but never happened here are some of that countrys and its cities like algeria, australian gp in sydney, belarus in minsk, bulgaria, chile, croatia, cuba, denmark, egypt, finland, french gp in paris, german gp in berlin, greece, indonesia, ireland, israel, jamaica, new zealand, netherlands gp in amsterdam, north korea, norway, poland, qatar, russian gp in moscow, chez, spanish gp in madrid, swedish gp in stockholm, thailand and as you mentioned new york city and also virginia, lousiana, orlando, florida, california and north carolina and also canadian gp in toronto.
As an american, I'd love a another race, especially in the east coast. I live near washington DC, and the closest grand prix is actually the canadian grand prix, with COTA being about 1000 miles further from me then gilles villeneuve
Miami is so stoked for Formula 1, you have no idea how insane the South Florida car scene is.
Anyone else remember the New York Street track from GT4? That would make for a good race.
Hell I think a Midwest grandprix would work. Lotta people here love racing and would fork out some money
I mean, it wasn't actually going be in New York City, it was going to be in New Jersey and called "New York City" and I would have both called it the New Jersey GP and would have gone to the race, since it would have been a Formula One race in my home state
Edit: I don't know why the state of New Jersey didn't help fund the race, since it would have been an opportunity to put New Jersey on a global stage
You are right!
That was pure gold man! Also from Jersey, Bergen County, I remember when they were planning it as well. I was pretty bummed out when it fell through. I went to Weekhaken to see Coulthard's test on the street which was super awesome. Great post!
@@ELcinegatto87 Jersey represent!!
Didn’t expect a Hindenburg reference in an F1 video.
Albert Park with a seizure, love it
“Hosting a formula one race in New Jersey is the hardest thing to do besides parking airships.”
Ooohhh nooooooooooooo
The Glen is an insane track. And I would love to see F1 there again
Great vid as always. Skillshare ad skip points: 3:50 - 4:57
An entire minute. My word
Josh: mentions Herman tilke
Everyone: nooooo, no god please no
There was talk of a Cape town race as well. Talk doesn't pay the bills
As much as I personally would love it, the city itself would hate it, and rightly so.
as always things in NY is actually done in NJ lol
As someone who lives in the area and has driven through the streets of the proposed F1 track, some history here:
- The shopping complex and parking garage that is where the pit complex would be originally was just a flat open-air parking lot.
They should race at St. Petersburg instead of Miami. the track gives amazing races in Indycar
I was literally just thinking this, plus we already have an IndyCar street circuit. Granted I don’t know a whole lot of the differences between the two series so I don’t know how F1 would be on that circuit or if it would need to be adjusted.
@Josh Revell plz
Nah.
Might be tricky getting the St Petersburg track up to FIA Grade 1 status.
hol' up, Indycar in Russia?
Just about to take a nap after a long week of work...got a notification of your new video and HAD to watch it!!!
I wanna see a Cape Town street circuit race tbh. Especially around the Waterfront area. Imagine table mountain in the background. I may have to make a video on this..
Don't they already have that Kyalami circuit, which is supposedly good?
@@mikespearwood3914 they do yes. But if that doesn't work out. A Cape Town street circuit would be pretty cool
As a grumpy new yorker, my main response was “is this gona fxck up traffic like the UN?” I’m not looking forward to the word cup being in new york either. rabble rabble rabble!
Shoreline Drive in Long Beach, California is already updated for the next 🇺🇸 Grand Prix, Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan for the next 🇺🇸 Grand Prix, Indianapolis Motor Speedway has a new chicane for the next 🇺🇸 Grand Prix, New tracks like the Streets of Baltimore, Maryland, Barbar Motorsports Park, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Toronto Motorsports Park, the Streets of St. Petersburg, Florida The Streets of Nashville, Tennessee Auto Club Speedway of Fontana, California and the Streets of Miami, Florida
I agree with you
Formula 1 doesn't do IndyCar tracks, they make their own tracks from city streets and road courses
actually went to the formula e race in red hook and it was really fun! the amount of warehouse space around the allowed car brands to set up cool experiences all around the neighborhood. Would love to see formula 1 in the same spot
Project Gotham Racing 4 for Xbox 360 back in the days, that game had many many NYC street circuits on it and they were actually really good, and demanding..it was sick storming through the Brooklyn Bridge back and forth with 230mph..
i loved those tracks in the game.
Considering this would be by far my best chance to ever see a GP in person, yeah I'd really love if this could actually happen
I live in the Bronx and at the time I would’ve snatched your hand off for a GP in the NYC area but now I’m almost happy we’re don’t have it. Nyc got enough parking lots no need for a V6 era F1 race lol
I'm still hoping for that Miami Florida track we need that s***
Meeee too.
I couldve had a race in my back yard basically but jersey isnt allowed to have anything nice
Dear Josh,
New York is also the home of the Mets. And we don't take lightly to being shunted to the side in favor of the Yankees alllll the time. I might "forget" to like this video because I am so upset now.
Regards
A Mets Fan close to tears
Love the content, and the smart humour in every video; keep it up man!
Also their first mistake was trying to host something in NJ, nothing gets done in that State
No, most Americans don't care about F1 and NYC would just be a logistical nightmare. If you want a second date in the US, work to get another track up to F1 standards. Like Sebring, Road America, Watkins Glen, or Sonoma.
I would love a NYGP. I love an hour from the city so it would be great to go to GP that’s so close to me
I think that with two dates, it should rotate a bit. Go to Long Beach. Go to New York. Go to Miami. But, stay at COTA. Let that one date be the same year on year but let the other tour the country with a variety of venues and such.
"...the country that has ruined too many things..."
Could not have said it better myself 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
-Signed An American
Honestly as an American f1 fan its really disappointing to see that not many people here are in to f1 at all or even motorsports in general unless its Nascar
Its called Formula E these days because the transition from petrol to electricity has been quite significant..
But its quite baffling that there are no FE races happening in America while the rest of the world is very common, as football (soccer) is a global thing..
I guess you Americans like to separate yourself from the rest of the world?.
And who’d have thought Miami would get it?
I just want F1 to go back to the Indianapolis Road Course. It seems good races usually happened at the track, yet the race most think of anymore is the 2005 event when 14 cars withdrew before the start. I'd love for them to return next year with the new car, and create better memories.
I mean I would like to see Indy on the schedule before Miami or Vegas
As someone who’s never been to an F1 race that lives in Hudson County and birthday is in mid June where the race would’ve taken place, I truly would’ve been the happiest man on earth.
COME BACK TO INDYYYYY
If F1 really wants to have a second race in the US, probably should just go back to Indy. It already has the FIA Grade 1 status required for a track and would be a lot easier and cost effective than a street circuit. There's a different layout there now and besides new tires were developed to handle banking if they ran the old layout.
I agree. Indy would make more sense. I feel like they are wasting their time trying to race at places in the u.s that have no intrest in the sport and are not familar with
There's so many better places in the states to host. Ex LA or Sebring.
If they decided to give Sebring the US gp, they would need to get rid of the old concrete from the old days of being a US ww2 air base, which I feel it would erase quite a bit of character to the track, and they maybe will end making it a hockemhring clone.
Laguna Seca comes to mind... would love to see F1 under negative G in the cork screw......
@@johnsmithton292 but... the idea is interesting though.... roflmao.... they probably wouldn't make the corner in the first place... especially coz apex is hidden until you are upon it.... like a clever cop... you don't see him till you sit on him... lol
I don't care where it could be, I just want more races in the Americas.
As a upstate New Yorker, I would love for f1 to come into Watkins Glenn again, also, we don’t claim NYc
I'll just say it, I'm glad they sacked it off, give us Kyalami, and maybe 3 other tracks before the US needs a second
Bernie looks like he should a Villan in a bond film .
Answer: I don't know

get a f1 race at mid ohio "Ohioan Grand Prix"
I had a seizure while reading that Ohioan part, thanks.
As a NYC resident, I was really excited in 2012. Quite bitter was my disappointment.
They could do a race in Buffalo, Rochester, or even Syracuse. (All of which are in New York)
as someone who lives in Phoenix, I really want F1 to come back here
Same although I would think if it came back it would be in Scottsdale
@@OMahtin You're right, Scottsdale is definitely more fitting for the whole Formula 1 image

Yes, we know. RUclips as a glitch when a video is recently uploaded. We know.
I think Miami is in much better shape to host an F1 race compared to New York
1st possibly?
You are, I think
No one cares
@@alanthesuperhero No, I wasn't. Ahh well
3:52 Yeah and also maybe Skillshare should Have a class for track designing lol.
I would rather think about other tracks in the US such as Watkins Glenn, Indy, even Laguna Sega, anything other than making a street circuit in a busy area of the NYC area. F1 History says that street circuits in the US don't exactly bode well.
F1 cars cant make it around Laguna Seca. The corkscrew would destroy the car.
As someone from the New York area I can confirm that race would be a banger and everyone near would attend even if they don’t like f1
Do it in Philly! Kelly Drive and Fairmount Park East.
I think it should return to Watkins glen
As a new jersey resident, and only 10 minutes away from nyc in general. A race here would have been my dream
I could have done a better segway Josh.
“They needed someone to share their skill and expertise, just like the lovely people at Skillshare do”

Well done Josh, keep it up
Great episode btw I love how Baku goes past an ancient castle while New York goes past an ancient sewage plant.... muricaaa!!! fuck yeah!!!

@@sennadesillva lol thanks I'm still learning the f1 calendar.
I think quality of circuit is more important than location.
