The Caribbean F1 Race That Never Was

- Recently there was talk of a Formula 1 race in the Caribbean. It wasn't the first time such discussions were had. In fact, back in the mid-80s, they got very close...

Fun fact about Fangio's kidnapping in Cuba: he actually became friend with his kidnappers due to being sympathetic towards their cause.
"You are bad guy but this does not mean that you are bad guy" - Juan Manuel Fangio
@@tylers1128 Fangio was from Argentina, at the time ran by oppressive dictator. Cuba was also ran by oppressive dictator. You could easily see why he would be sympathising with them.
But sure - Stockholm syndrome.
A fun fact thats actually fun, nicely done
So did Alfredo Di Stefano
@@TonySpike And that's why he is also a legend.
Absolutely shocked to discover a person outside of Jamaica that not only knows of Dover raceway but actually has something to say about it, it truly is a marvellous little track that I grew up in and around as the child of marshals, I think my head would explode if F1 ever came here and I mean that
Didn’t know Jamaica had furries lmao.
I'm more surprised he knows bushy park here in barbados!
@@shayzadg Maloney advertises it very good. :D
For real! Always happy to see home get a shout out.
@ oWorcestershite IKR. Not a lot of people really know of Dover, so Josh did some homework. Not gonna lie, I had to go back a few times when he showed the Dover layout and that clip of Kyle Gregg in the Radicle.
As a resident of Curacao never thought I would see a video of this race on your channel. Great video as always! Masha danki pa e video.
Ono!!
Kompletu❤
But there is a bigger questions.... WHERE IS THE RACE IN SCANDINAVIA ?
I agree, give Valtteri a home race 🇫🇮
under four foot of snow probably
Copenhagen GP was close to become a thing, but unfortunately danish politicians didn't want it :(
Anderstorp Sweden did hold 6 f1 starts in the 70s.
Finland has a f1 graded track
I have been waiting on this video for so long! My dad actually went to see the F3000 race, he still has the tickets too. Thank you so much for bringing attention to this bizarre race, but you did make a slight mistake from my knowledge.
From my knowledge, the F3000 cars we're not the first cars to actually drive here. Pretty sure there we're a few support races, including some sort of golf race, and possibly an M1 Procar race.
My dad and me always talk about if this race actually continued, not even with F1, the island would be in a different state than right now.
A fun fact: A few of the concrete barriers from the race are actually still there! A memory of something incredible.
Yeah i got emotional there when i first saw this video pop up. Thank you!
honestly bro you should have millions of subscribers your content is on another level
He will, just give him time
@@danonthestrings he deserves it

It reminded me of one thing that I heard a lot in 1990-91: the chance of a Venezuelan Grand Prix at the end of the season, probably in Caracas, And even there was a date for it: November 15th. I do not know if that was something to fill the motorsport newspapers, but ir never happen.
BTW, there was a Venezuelan Grand Prix, between 1955-57, but for the World Sportscars Championship. And the last one was the swansong of Maserati in motorsport.
There was. Part of that track was a bit like AVUS in thar it ran on both sides of a dual carriageway.
With Zane Maloney on the F2 grid, I’m really hoping we can get bushy park into the conversation more often. I’d love to see it host an F1 race!!
I would like to see a Caribbean race or a Colombian race. Would it happen? Never say Never. Also, I want to know more about Slim Borgudd. How he went from ABBA drummer to F1 Driver.
Me to both
ABBA actually sponsored his drive in F1
@@lilyabatliwala6789 So They took a chance on him (Yes, I went there).
As you know, he died in last febuary 23rd, at the age of 76, in Coventry, where he resided. He had Alzheimer, last december there was a appeal - a sort of GoFundMe - to pay its medical expenses, that costed arround ten thousand pounds. He got a lot, but I do not know if they reach the goal before his demise.
But... yeah. I think Josh should do a video of Slim. His life was... creative. A late bloomer, but a good one.
Punta Cana would be the best place for a Caribbean GP honestly.
Fun fact, they are now building a brand new karting circuit in Curaçao, maybe you should ask Danny Kroes about it, he had been my mechanic for a few karting races last year and is ambassador for karting in Curaçao
Thanks for mentioning me mate very much appreciated
Where in curacao are they building it ?
Never knew the Dutch Antilles - almost - had an F1 track back in the 80's
My mom comes from Curaçao 🇨🇼 so this is very interesting + I love f1 and racing in general so yes very interesting.
i recently spoke to a organiser at that event when i was on the island. and its really cool to see someone finally made a video about it
Josh, you did some some serious homework for this vid. I was not expecting to see Dover being mentioned at all. As a Jamaican, I had to go back a couple times to look at it, all with one big grin. Any Jamaican who saw this (like me) would be ecstatic (as you have seen in your comments). I went there as a child to watch races, as it is in my home parish (St. Ann representing). Last time I went there was in 2009, as I moved to Kingston after.
Its a stonking track, with high and low points and 2 straights for DRS (lol). I can imagine the cheeky lunges around the Carib Cement corner. But, my main concerns would be the hairpin and the back straight (the part at 0.59 in the vid and connected to the part with the crash). The latter needing a more solid separator between it and another side of the track, in order to avoid launching through at bruk neck (break neck) speeds. Also, the whole track would have to be repaved to F1 specs and some areas would have to be widened to accommodate the cars. Oh and the pits would have to be redone to match up to F1 specs.
Glad that you gave a shout to some of my Caribbean neighbours. Great vid!!! That is it!!!!
That clip of the accident around 11:00 just shows how far Formula safety has come, his head rolling all over, track still live after a breakdown or whatever on a twisty narrow section. Wow
And people still hate the Halo ... which makes me sick people still think "Yeah the safety is better but its ugly" ....
@@bevanmcnicholl2525 well they didn't lie it is uglier than with halo, I'd rather have my favourite 20 drivers alive with ugly cars than some of them dead with pretty cars tho
@@GameOver-nm2us Lol the cars aren't ugly .... they were in 2018/2019 but the cars would look bad now without it
@@bevanmcnicholl2525 Yes yes that's what I meant, the 2018-2021 cars looked like they just strapped the halo in there without any thinking about it, and that's what actually happened, but now the cars are built around the halo or atleast it's meant to be a part of it from the start so it looks better
@@GameOver-nm2us Shit sorry I misread what you said. Yeah I agree with you :)
wow 🙂this was the race that made me fall in love with a formula racing,i never image someone outside the dutch kingdom to know about it. i used to live next to what became that 1time circuit. great video
Beautiful production value. I also learned something new today. Wonderful video! 🎉
Two Josh videos in a week? LESHGO!
Pleasant surprise to see my home island on my RUclips feed!
As a person from Curaçao, I knew about the race, but never the back story. Also, I never thought I would see my little Caribbean island being talked about on an F1 related channel. Masha masha danki.
Never thought I'd see Dover in one your videos Josh, what a pleasant surprise. We also have Jamwest Speedway here in Jamaica which has a better quality track surface with much more run-off area for the cars.
My sentiments exactly!!!! I'm still grinning.
Thank you for the video and mentions of a possible GP in Colombia, would love to see a race in my home country
That epic macho man cream rises to the top promo you threw in had me crying 😂😂😂
Could you imagine having the Havana Grand Prix again? Going to have to overthrow a government again.
No, that'll be part of how post-Castro Cuba rebrands itself. Miguel Díaz-Canel will imitate China and Vietnam.
Never knew about this . Thanks for sharing!!
Funny to see John Nielsen in this video. Most young Danish F1 fans, like myself, mostly know him as one of the commentators on the Danish F1 broadcast whenever Tom Kristensen isnt around to do it
Is he any relation to Nicklas Nielsen?
@@guyincognito8019 No, Nielsen is just the most common last name in Denmark. As in 4% of the entire population has it
AWESOME 👏 as usual!
Sidenote (since he featured in the race): I feel like Claudio Langes needs some kind of video on him (possibly a WTF Happened To...?). The man had an interesting career, including his catastrophic stint with the hopeless Eurobrun in the 90s.
its a good day when josh uploads
Macho Man at 7:47 was magnificent. You’re maginificent.
And again the music choice in the end of the video was immaculate
Josh I love what you do keep it up. Also i would love to see you do a video on takuma sato. That dude is basically Japanese Fernando Alonzo in terms of longevity. He's still racing AT 46 YEARS OLD! (5 years older than alonzo) And had a relatively good carrer.
I’m from Curaçao and dreamt of seeing a race there but sadly never happened
Another great video 😊 you do a really good job telling these F1 stories
Heck there was once a Trans Am race in Puerto Rico that got raced on 2003 in which...obviously, they used an airport (Not even the Luis Muñoz Marín airport, it's most famous airport, it was instead in Isla Grande) to be raced on that looks insanely similar to the former IRL/Champ Car Cleveland track.
Coming from aruba, i really wish we could host a grand prix
Never in my life did I think I would see Josh Revell talking about such a random city as Barranquilla in one of his videos. I'd heard the rumors a year back and how both the mayor Jaime Pumarejo and the President Iván Duque seemed to be onboard with the idea. While I'd love to see F1 in what's somewhat my hometown, or anywhere in Colombia really, I just think Colombia as a country and ESPECIALLY Barranquilla are not ready for F1 just yet. If they could somehow pull it off, especially by the at this point 2025 deadline, I would be very impressed and delighted, but I just don't see it amounting to much, especially with the standards both of facilities and money that F1 require. With all of the other countries currently trying to fill the last available slot for a Grand Prix, surely it's not worth it to Colombia to try to outbid the likes of South Africa and Germany.
I'd love to see F1 here, and the project might work if they have the funding... however, that's a VERY big if. The national government doesn't seem to be willing to back the project (understandable, since that's _a ton_ of money), the local government is interested but I don't know what kind of money they could throw at the project without compromising the needs of the city/region, and while private investors are there... they kind of overlap with "the local government" anyway.
About "competition" for a F1 slot, I don't think Germany is trying very hard to get back in the calendar (the government doesn't want to pay for F1 anymore). Rather than that, it's the sportswashing oil-rich governments that seem to be set on taking over all F1 slots for the foreseeable future. Which is unfortunate (and further dashes Barranquilla's chances to get in the calendar; we just don't have any way to compete with that kind of money).
my parents will possibly move to curacao for thier retirement soon, so I'm all for a curacao grand prix, ill make sure to visit my parents at that point each year.
I’m from Curaçao. Born and raised. We can barely patch our roads let alone pave them to grade 1 F1 standard. Tho with the right sponsors we could since there's some extremely rich ppl living here.
Fun and insightful video as always. Btw, John Nielsen, a danish driver, did go ahead and made a name for himself in Sportscar racing, LeMan etc. And is a current F1 commentator on danish TV
Best F1 RUclipsr. Full stop.
F1 just *has* to return to Morocco, Turkey, India, Malaysia, South Korea, Argentina, Portugal, Germany, and Mugello.
Whilst we’re at it, hold another race behind the old iron curtain (ie Eastern European. ie *JUST GIVE US A CZECH GRAND PRIX, DAMMIT!!!* )
They're under discussions for a new Argentinian Grand Prix at the moment... And India will eventually return, given that it's F1's third biggest market.
Heh never expected that people would even remember that race, let alone that it would end up warranting a whole video from you. Nice historical tidbit about our little island.
I feel the Caribbean motorsport fans don’t get enough talk. Unfortunately closest things we’ll get is Miami .
Around 2011-12 there were talk to have a GP in Dominican Republic but change of president in the country derailed the efforts
The humor in your videos is spot on! Love it
Great to see Bushy Park on the list…it needs a proper length straight, but apart from that it’s a nice fast track…Much respect Bro
Would LOVE to have a home race in Jamaica!
80’s F1 really was a weird time.
This is awesome. Would love to see if Formula E could make this happen.
@11:33 Wrong airport, haha. That's Aruban Queen Beatrix airport, not Curacao's. I understand the mistake, Aruba and Curacao have a lot in common. However, never compare or mix up the islands, the locals don't like that. I should know, haha. Really nice video though, never heard about this when I was young and living on the islands back in the 90s.
omgg. my dad always told me about a grand prix that almost happened! Greetings from Curacao fan!
Long time viewer, first time commenter.
Im sorry Josh
I have no idea why I had not subscribed to you. I’m shocked you don’t have more.
See you at the top.
Believe.
I am from Colombia and I never knew they wanted to make an F1 race there.
Upgrades for circuits to meet current F1 standards are huge and so expensive. Even Brands Hatch doesn't meet current standards as the Pitlane is too short and that held GPs in the '80s.
Josh you either have a massive production team or you are one very talented New Zealander.
Or both. Great vid
Peter
Josh is a one man operation
He is Hugely talented as we all can see from the incredible videos that he puts out for all of us to enjoy
The quality and complexity of his work stands him high in comparison with his contemporaries
I think if F1 were to race in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic would be the best suited country to host it.
I am biased, I’m Dominican.
But we have a nice track in Santo Domingo, ideally they’d make a new one though, probably by Punta Cana.
Never thought you would make a video on the race of the ABC islands.
A new Josh Revell video so soon? Very nice!
The Caribbean GP should be in Punta Cana! Definitely! 💯
It’s a tourist attraction so it’s perfect
A race was going to be held on the streets of Panama City, Panama but the decision was delayed in 2020 and has been shelved for the foreseeable future
I’ve always hoped for a Caribbean F1 race.
Tried to do one in AC just for fun but there’s only Bushy Park which isn’t suitable 😅.
There’s more mods on ac Wallerfield,Dover, and another I can’t remember I think South Dakota in guyana
This is the same racing series that gave us a Swiss GP that wasn’t in Switzerland, soooo…. No change there then.
Im from Curaçao and i wish that there was a mod for asseto corsa of the Curaçao grand prix
No way! My neighboring island made it on a thumbnail
Two Josh Revell videos in a week? This is once in a lifetime time folks.
Josh: "These organizers were doing the best with what they had and deserve some respect."
Also Josh: "Italians."
nice video
Defo heard of Mike Thackwell. One of my mates used to have one of his nosecones as a piece of memorbilia.
Mate, could you do a video about Gastón Mazzacane, as someone who is not that much older than you, I remember this guy pretty well for the wrong reasons. I'm sure you could make a pretty good video about him that enlightening your fanbase about pay drivers. I'm sure you have plenty of content lined up for the future but I thought I'd make this suggestion.
7:47 Nice!
Just adding a comment to feed the algorithm 😜
Thanks for the vid - great breakfast companion 👍
we need this track in assetto, looks like a cool track to throw a car around
Beautiful island, pretty affordable vacation spot.
Oh damn, Josh is taking again of my country (Colombia). I'll say the Caribbean GP name is weird, and while Barranquilla has some nice parts, is not as advanced in the grand scheme of things. I've seen where the track would be "built" (because street circuit) and I'll gotta admit, is one of the nicer parts of Barranquilla. The Malecón (as it is called) is gorgeous, but the city is quite ravaged with water and electricity problems. And it wouldn't be F1 without some corruption sprinkled here and there. Honestly I see it happening but not for long, and the Caribbean GP might end bouncing around places like The Bahamas or some other island with wealth.
A Caribbean Grand Prix sounds pretty lit
Trinidad has a decent track for a Caribbean isle
A grand prix in aruba is what I hope for cuz its my home island
We need a video on slim borgudd
10:14
He's driving so fast that the number is peeling off!
I live in Curacao and I didn’t know about this nobody ever talks about this.. its like it never happened, seeing it is kinda crazy lol
F1 coming to Jamaica would be cool, they could do street circuit layout using either New Kingston, Half-Way or the streets of Mobay as the circuit.
8:43 Bro just drifting in the background
I'm italian and the whole video is genuinely hilarious
kinda upset he didn't mention Wallerfield in Trinidad
Tbf there were also rumors about the Argentine Grand Prix coming back
That went nowhere
Your content is fcking great mate keep it up
There's some talks with FIA and Sergio Pérez father (he's a politician, not a good one or a famous one despite his son) to race in Cancún. Might it been seen as a Caribbean GP as it is properly in front of the Caribbean sea? Who knows, but hey, you can expect everything from F1.
He already have said that after the Mexican GP last year will be announced the Cancún GP. Remember, he's a politician and it's expected to not to keep his word, and recently he said that the Cancún GP won't be a substitute for the actual Mexican GP, that he had the proper land to built the circuit and it's just a matter of time to being announced.
Personally, I don't believe in his words. And better prefer a Caribbean GP properly in the Caribbean countries, not near to it.
Νο fkn way you are covering the Curaçao Grand Prix, greetings from Curaçao!
Pls do driver profile on Ronnie Peterson try 29
Can you cover the east london gran prix circut
I absolute love the way you say Haiti. 😂
THE CREAM ALWAYS RISES YEEEEAH
Thackwell never got a chance in F1 besides sporadic outings with teams like Tyrrell and Arrows and John Nielsen won the 1990 24 Hours of Le Mans with Jaguar and the 1996 Japanese Touring Car Championship. Oh and Johnny Dumfries got the drive with Lotus because Senna didn't want Derek Warwick anywhere near him.
Also, if F1 does go to the Caribbean, then I think Barbados or Jamaica is more likely, especially if Zane Maloney (whose uncle owns Bushy Park) and Alex Powell make F1.
Why does the music at the start slap so hard
9:37 I got an autograph from this guy & also because his official title was ‘The Earl of Dumfries’ (yes he is a real Earl) he also gave me a sticker depicting him holding a lance charging like a knight of ye’old times in the Lotus 97T.
Would you do any videos on Drag Racing?
Bruh, I had to pause at Dover Raceway because WHAAAAAT? lmao
I had to go back a few times.
A second dutch gp would be good
This is quality content, worthy of a netflix series👍 Way better than dts
Cheers!
