That's why he gets the big bucks. Almost seems like mono vs. stereo. Well done!
Of course CLA's sounds completely clear and punchy, but the original is actually pretty good!
He didn't do much really. But it's the little things that he did which make his mix really shine. I swear he just reached for the red SSL knobs for the guitars and boosted like 3db
I agree! The original mix is really great, too!
kind a like the original mix
When you get a mix that sounds that good but then still know how to improve on it, that's when you know you're at the top of your game. A lot of people would have been like oh that sounds great, let's master it. But I think his definitely sounds better even if the differences are subtle.
poor chris...hes got a multimillion dollar museum of recording history at his disposal and he still has to answer questions about plugins hahah
Always amazes me just how sensitive these guys ears are. You almost have to be a producer/mixer yourself to appreciate just how detailed and accurate guys like CLA are when they listen to stuff. Not to mention the ungodly wisdom and familiarity they have with the sound characteristics various outboard gear and plugins have.
It's amazing how he added top-end clarity to all the tracks without sounding harsh.
2 instruments which are very different between mixes are the snare drum and tambourine.
Snare = originally low-middy and overly thumpy. CLA mix made it crisp and much less dull.
Tambourine - originally cannot hear it too much. CLA mix made it very resonant at 13k.
lol @ 4:20 "just lightly tapping it" while the meter shows 15 dB of reduction
Lol that's the way it is these days, unfortunately. Remember when "Lightly tapping it" used to mean 1 or 2 db?
srty srtyy Meh. I like the sound of compression and it's a creative decision IMO. Nobody is releasing completely uncompressed music. A one-pack a day smoker bitching at the three-pack a day smoker for having a smoking problem. I'm just saying, call a spade a spade....15 dB ain't tappin it!
Just want to point out that there are artists releasing completely compressionless music. It does happen, although not that often. Everything Bruce Sweden engineered for MJ (remember the Thriller and Bad albums?) was done without even the slightest touch of compression at any stage. It's pretty amazing and it shows in the music, because it's real punchy and dynamic.
We all love the dynamic control aspect of compression, and how easy it is to achieve vs automation/perfect session musicians etc. But there's no denying it comes with a down side, especially when it's used excessively.
srty srtyy Well that's nonsense. Bruce Swedien used compressors on Thriller, although sparingly. He also used gain rides, tape (compression), tubes (compression), and transformers (compression). Analog beats the piss out of transients by default. Please show me a completely digital compression-less mix in the competitive market.
*****
"Swedien used compressors on Thriller, although sparingly." - Read his book and watch his videos before you blindy write things that you assume and hope are true.
"He also used gain rides," - Exactly. He rides faders to control dynamics. That's not compression.
"tubes (compression), and transformers (compression)." - None of this stuff is exactly the same as actual compression. You need to do some more research.
"Analog beats the piss out of transients by default." - Lol don't exaggerate. It has a taming effect, but it doesn't "beat the piss" out of them. Also, that doesn't do anything to say that compression is actually needed.
"Please show me a completely digital compression-less mix in the competitive market." - For what reason? Whether or not there are digital compressionless recordings doesn't do anything at all to demonstrate that compression is actually needed.
I don't need to show you a compressionless digital recording in order to demonstrate that, musically, compression isn't "needed".
CLA dances around the snare with the vocal on his mix. Its like he knows how to get the vocals to make love with the snares. DOPE! Besides that and the change in bass placement, both the mixes are great!
great breakdown!
CHRIS ALGE SAVED MY LIFE 🎶🙏🔥🔥
LOL. Love the sound of his mix, I just find it funny how a lot of his descriptions are "well I just used my plugin and it sounds great"
Well, I've actually had that experience with his plugins. You put 'em across a snare and it can have somewhat finished sound with minimal effort. Remember he had a lot to do with them not programmers. They're very simple and effective. I have to agree.
Amazing song and mix. Listen the full song a model of rhythms variations. CLA great as usual, amazing mix.
that is an AMAZING mix
I love his analog hardware but I also love all the Waves plug-ins just as much. I have been using his CLA plug-ins for quite some time during my mixes, and they give my mixes a great sound that most plug-ins can't do! Thank you for some of your great plug-ins...
love this studio wish to work in it , one day ... amen to the engineer legend
Great info
amazing advice!!
The difference are not that important because the recording and the artist was surely really nice. But with good references, you can hear the mix of CLA is more clear, define and has more energy. This is the difference between a profesionnal mix, and a grammy winning mix engineer. Congrats to the CLA mix this is just awesome.
Really. In CLA version are vocals incredible pure. And not too much loud. Master work....😎...Also CLA dynamics is much deep.
The difference will be heard even on the worst radio.
Awesome!!
this is a badass video
wow, incredible clear mix
great job Chris....Masters classes are in session
great info............
Original Mix = More real/full and Louder rhythm,, Cla mix =Cleaner Vocals less frequencies cutting into them, wider instruments sound which also added more hollowness,, Personally I'd listen to the Original mix, i can get more into its groove, but For radio,, Cla mix is just perfect!
Glue compressor on Ableton does just that
I love that room. Used to work there all the time before CLA moved in. Dr. Dre was there when he did all that classic Chronic stuff. Great spot! Lot's of history.
Lord Alge, you are the best
I dig CLA's mix in this!
awesome song. where can i get it?
I like the og bass n depth of snare.
The best!
This video just taught me that mixing mainly boils down to preference
Black Bastard yep
I also found that using his bass plug-in for sub works brilliantly! I also don't even need to really EQ much when I use it for bass, only for bass.
That setup is crazy!
This make sense for CLA. I read in an interview that he either pans hard left, hard right, or center.
I love the intro the 🎸 sounds sickkkkkk. big chine 👊👈👌😀
love your works . supper fan. 411tami
I totally agree.
CLA nailed it with his mix.
0:06 " Oh daughtry! I'm a mom so I love this." - Louis Griffin
damn it i wish i could get my mixes to have that quality
Knowledge + Equipment
Agreed.
+tripleb4life + musicality
You need good musicians as well
More detail, clear, clear, good sound
lightly tapping it - pins meter
chris im a fellow sound engineer out of st.louis.. and ive notice your wall of fame ..GOOD LORD.... and i bet you ran out of room for the rest of them... I'm working hard to get my first, I'm totally dedicated to my craft .. ive learned so much more by self studying and practice... i have so much respect for the guys who had to splice tape...lol.. we are some spoil ass humans today...lol.... your work inspire me to be great one day and i will... thanks a lot buddy..
Sheesh, he made that snare sound good
that really sounded much more dynamic that cla mix!
Just look at that rack array at the back of the control room. CLA "Wall Of Joy"
Original is so good. Lord-Alge can just make everything bigger and wider. Biggest change was in drums. They went so much wider and added more balance to the song. Winner is obvious.
this men is a genius
DAMN THE MIXES ARE LIKE NIGHT AND DAY GOOD JOB BUT PLEASE DO A VIDEO EXPLAINING WHAT ALL YOU DID FOR US FANS!!!!!!!!
It's astonishing how much better the front to back depth is in CLA's mix. I know CLA is into Extreme panning. I think his hard L/R pans made room for the stuff in the centre which is what gave CLA that front to back depth. There was also a better clarity, almost sheen like' quality to the CLA mix, almost like some removed a tissue from in front of the speakers...very pleasing, not offensive like some who try to over hype the top end. Very cool to hear the original mix vs CLA.
any chance to get the multitrack?
Nice one :)
I took a different dynamic approach... aka. removed any dynamics completely lol...
Try to turn up the speaker volume of CLA mix and you'll end up with ear fatiguing PAIN vs. original mix that allows cranking up the speakers.
Sir, can I learn from u....
*He reminds me of Paul Stanley. His looks, ways of talking and moving. And of course great clear full mix.*
that was 6 plus mins i'll never get back....
I wonder what Mike Dean would have done on this piece 😛
Something that I seldom see addressed is how well it sounds in the studio and than you go watch the band live and it sucks maybe one day in the near future the actual performance will sound as good as the recordings
That's interesting there's no rules on mixing but how do engineers get that clear sounding finished product?
Very Nice, But that's to be expected with Chris's track record which is to say Incredible, tracks are recorded clean which makes them a lot easier to mix, doesn't hurt to have good ideas with punchy bass and tight drums. Great J.O.B.
No, CLA mix is CRYSTAL!! Perfection....
Kind of like the original mix in parts, sounds like it has some sort of tape/clip distortion that adds that grungy dimension.
great mix- BUT is it me or are A/B levels in favor (louder) in Chris's mix??
"You got two speakers, man! Spread it!" That should be posted on every board - live and studio.
the originallllll mix..!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THINGS HE JUST TAUGHT YOU!!!
1:LCR PANNING
2:CUT THE SHIT OUT OF THE SOUND USING A EQ
3:BUY WAVES PLUGINS
4: THE MODELING PLUGINS, DON'T SOUND LIKE THE ACTUAL UNIT
5:USE A WAVE L1,L2, OR L3 ON ALL THE BIG LEAD PARTS(VOCALS)
I wonder what he would do with one of my mixes
I wonder what will happen if he react to ASMR, especially those sensitive high quality asmr
sounds like a problem on your end. his mix was instruments usinga very wide stereo field with vocals center. the vocals and instruments on the original were mainly encompassing the same frequency spaces with lower volumes. Do a stereo test on your computers speaker configuration.
Not a experienced mixer, and maybe the mix compar just shifted at the wrong spots, but the bass really sounds like it has positive, distinctive character in the original mix. Sounds like it is put in the background in the CLA-mix.
1:10 Press "CLA mix" botton on your mixer to change the sound of your work. Enjoy.
Def alot brighter mix
name of the song plzzzz
i love the original mix lol
True as well as the bass is brought down. Overall the CLA is more balanced and smoother.
Master who is agree just see green days mixes
Hey guys can someone please tell me which song is this..
Would be really helpful.
The song is called "F*** You" by Elle and the Fury.
Great song right!
Waves Audio thanks appreciate it.
Dereck Dunn yeah great song!! Great production..f...ng great!!
Whatta stupid line of text... :((
I'm either going deaf, or the gear I'm using is wrong, or RUclips quality is screwing something up... but... I don't know... I like the Original better. I can hear the original lacks some tweaks, but the CLA Mix just lacks a soul straight forward.... I don't know, must be RUclips... Hope it's RUclips...
Only major differences are in how drums are mixed, they are just more compressed and bright... I kinda like original mix, its more heavy and real. But defiantly CLA mix is way to go because it got that pop rock "in your face" radio signature sound.
We have the same plugins but I cant do that lol
Anyone else thinks the CLA Mix sounds too compressed?
+A. Seager I can hear what you're saying. But the CLA Mix has so much character and definition to the mix that, to me, the pros out weigh in the cons by a mile.
+A. Seager Compression is his signature. He loves compression and uses compression to add character to the sound. Try his other mixes you'll hear it.
+A. Seager it is too compressed, but its the vocals, they probably were not recorded on very dynamic microphones so you don't have much headroom to work with without slamming the shit out of them.
Ashley Seager no.
correct observation..but i like it though ..
Imagine if they showed us what he actually did so we could watch him mix it.
Two different worlds bud....
One is PT mix with Plug-Ins, the other is the Sony Digital Tape with SSL.
brilliant, 1 dislike though! really?
this is great.
however I did laugh a pretty hard "HA!" when at the end he says "...the level doesnt actually jumps, the energy jumps." and out of nowhere you hear the girl say "FUCK YOU dont tell me you know whats best for me!"
hahaha it was funny as hell :P
anyways great video!
The CLA mix not only pushes the vocal too far up front, but takes away that delicious dubby reverb which gave the song its uniqueness. Fuck radio mixes, they make me wanna turn it off.
CLA mix pretty good the drums, that his sound...
CLA mix, sound just bigger, more punchy and have more clarity, when you hear the change to the original, the mix just shrinks, the drums go away and loose dimension and body, i am just telling the truth, you can easily tell even blindfold , i am spotting this on my pc speakers, when hearing it on my studio monitors, there is a night and day difference, yes the winner is good but CLA is far superior on this particular song.
mike black is from Moline I'll
Enjoyed the drums of the original more actually.
Subtle = nobody can hear the difference - or its negligible.
Think about it...
If you have a decent mix - and then you take a break - then you go back to it...any adjustments are pointless...mostly!
It's all subjective!
So -> You listen to a song for 30 minutes - you add some treble, boost the volume - it sounds BETTER....it always will!
Go back to it later...it sounds like there's too much treble and the volume is a bit much....but when you trim a few dB from it and shelve the treble a little....it doesn't sound as sparkly....
So -> Anyone can play any song on RUclips......then add some treble and a few dB - and - it sounds better!
Now - if I make a plugin that adds treble and boosts the overall volume 0,5 decibels....and I show you my plugin on the mix - > BYPASS MODE -> then -> ACTIVE -> you know damned well my plugin is gonna look and sound fantastic!
Also - Saturation / Distortion / Overdrive / Tube Warming......
Well -> this is noise and distortion at the end of the day!
"Yup - we take your pristine quality signal - and then we add dirt to it - and it sounds "beefy, meaty, it now has testicles added to it!"
Well - come on! haha
Basically - "Okay - you've got some music or audio recorded - at super high quality! Well - let's make it sound worse!"
So - they distort, saturate, clip or whatever - and your beautifully clean signal now sounds a bit muffled, crapper...
"Oh yes - this is great now! Real crunch, feeling and grit that only an old analogue desk can add!"
+Chris K What are you talking about?? Are you saying there isn't much difference between the tracks because I can hear a pretty big difference.
+Chris K For me, it's when I can go away and come back and nothing stands out as wrong. I'll often spend 8 hours on something and be really stoked with it then hear it the next day and dump all the changes. It's when I hear it the next day and still feel stoked that I know it's right.
@@readytokill123 he is listening on his iphone
this not fair competition because there is different in the volume
and every thing loud is better to human ear
both are great
But compression often just gives the illusion of it being louder, he's a master at dealing with compression for sure.
IMO in that song I think the original mixes sound better. More natural. Better guitar sound. Perhaps more analog and natural sound. The mistake could be bassdrum and snare a bit loud and in front more than the singer, and with the new mix that is fixed. In the other hand and for other music style, I want that engineer and that studio. Great job!
It seems to me that I prefer the sound of the bass on the original mix
Yeah man...A LOT of people have no idea what the hell they are talking about. Good ears bro.
Chris can i be your student and love to be because l love you sooooo much
Be careful, though. One of the things they don't really say is how they have high-quality converters (that are preventing alias distortion and warping). So they can be gratuitous with their ITB processors, unlike someone who has doesn't have good converters or a good PC that can at least provide ample oversampling, to help the filters at the top-end of the spectrum (which is where we get our nasty aliasing artifacts). That's one of the primary culprits of the harsh "digital" sound that we hate.
