a common thread i have noticed with old school mixers is that because they are constrained by the amount of hardware they have, they were forced to make more cohesive / glued mixes than people who mix ITB today. if anything they were fighting to create separation whereas people ITB are struggling to make their stuff gel / glue
Yup and I think people can be spoiled by options these days because of the ability to use so many instances of effects and unlimited eq notches etc and making some over complicate things and come up with contrived processes when it's not really that deep! 😁 (I know that cause I've been there lol)
Yes its what i call the lazy and lost engineer! They slap a ton of plugings and expect a perfect mix or everything to be automated for them. This is stupid i always advise aspireing engineers to learn their tools first then start collecting bits here and there that are to ur taste and style. Buying everything and having tons of plugins is more of a hinderance than a help. Most dont even know 1 plugin very well cuz they have so many to play with that they cant become proficient with any.
Sorry but who exactly are the in the box mixers you're comparing to CLA? Are you comparing a relatively amateur mixer with a seasoned pro with years of experience?
This is one of the most important concepts in mixing, IMO. Ever notice how it’s much easier to mix live sound than it is to mix a truly *great* sounding record? Of course...that’s because you’re provided with a space. Venues and halls lend automatic “dimension” to music. Recording is the direct opposite. Many times you’re presented with the driest possible sound. If you don’t give the music a nice space in which to exist, it will never sound the way you hear it in your head.
A few years ago, I've stopped watching CLA's tutorials as they were always full of confused claptrap, indeed using opaque concepts such as "Organic, smooth, natural", so I'm glad he changed his attitude and I salute this one that is clear and informative! :-) Thanks!
If you run Reaper, it's super easy to send multiple tracks to a single reverb, and out to a delay, without any outboard gear or console. You can create 4 reverb tracks, 4 delay tracks, and send any track in/out, back, forth, whatever... and manipulate them on the fly in the mixer panel.
@@devianthousend not in pro tools. You can't have tracks be midi one minute, and audio the next in protools. You can't mix the two on a track. You are limited as all hell in pro tools as to what tracks can be sends, receives, aux returns, midi/audio, etc, etc... Routing and re-routing on the fly in pro tools to hear what the I/O changes bring about is a giant pain in the ass.
That's the right approach. Less is more, infinte options make a mess out of mix. Sharing effects, comp's etc. makes a dense wibe; an animal that has face, body and soul.
Damn it's crazy looking back and seeing Studio A like this. Can-Am my old stomping ground from 94-05. Memories came flooding back that's wassup! Lil history for y'all. In August 96 this room was candle lit with the lights off and chronic smoke while we played back the mastered version of Hail Mary on the big rig and tripped tf out.
Chris! This is your best video yet. You're getting really good my friend. Thank you very much and I look forward to the rest of the series. Thank you to Waves as well for producing this with Chris. I appreciate you both. ✌🏼❤️
Hats off to Waves for this video which is truly a meaty tutorial and not a commercial. This is also a topic that CLA has only briefly explained in most videos out there including MWTM. I'll go buy one of your plugins now.
I hear what you are saying but...his CLA Signature Series bundle essentially has it. It has 3 separate delays and verbs, working in conjunction. Granted you can only use 2 at a time unless you stack the plugin. CPU nightmare though.
Content aside, this is Chris' most engaging focused presentation I've seen him do, and I have seen the lot. Great focus on concepts and content, my opinion about the man has elevated. G'job Chris 👍 stay safe and well all ✌️
Actually organic in art only means that the art itself naturally leads from beginning to middle to end without apparent seems; so when CLA says he tries to blend the returns so you can’t quite pinpoint the landscape - that simply means you’re making the landscape organic (transients naturally leading into the next without artifacts presenting themself e.g.). Love the lesson and the analogy’s, always informational to listen to CLA! 🎶💯
That is an excellent approach. It's always fun watching guys here on YT putting an instance of reverb on every channel. They even discuss how many of them can they insert before the processor gives up. It is a technical competition, not music making
I wish I had a fraction of that hardware collection! That being said the delay into reverb seems doable in the box, can’t wait to experiment with that concept. Thanks Chris!
Thanks so much for sharing. The concepts explained are on point... totally agree on that mixing approach, thinking about it and you won't actually need specific examples to do so. CLA is the BOSS, period. Can't wait to check the next episode.
Looks like something you would see at a NASA space station. I can see through mountains watch me disappear. I can even touch the sky. Swallowing colors of the sound I hear. Am I just a crazy guy you bet. That is the sound performance, magic and expertise we get from Chris Lord-Alge and his "touch" with music mixing.
My initial struggles were getting the outboard gear to mix loud enough. Getting a strong influence. As I learned more, there are ways to monitor and manipulate levels, thereby adjusting the mix for prominent results. Plug-ins are still somewhat a struggle, where I am not getting enough influence from the plug-in. Of course Waves is the exception, Waves plug-ins work and you can tell they’re active and what they’re doing with quick A/B. I need more powerful EQing and that’s certainly my focus next Black Friday. Thank you Waves, keep up the great work. -Jim
Freaking great lesson! I got more out of this 10 minute tutorial than hours spent listening elsewhere. Put this to work in a current mix and Bammo!, awesomeness. Thanks Chris!!!
Yeah uncle CLA is insane. Jesus what a master. You see you have mixing engineers... And then you have mixing artists - and his stuff with the delays and verbs is what I strongly consider as art. Probably the main reason why his mixes always sound drastically different and more vivid than the others.
I'm a client so maybe I can give some insights. Organic: has natural dynamics, ambience and sounds. Smooth: glued, soft transients and high end, not harsh. Natural: same as organic. 😂
@@MixChecks Hahaha no joke, a guitarist once asked a sound engineer to make his guitar sound more "rancid green" during a show, I was there and couldn't believe my ears. 😂
@@axel.lessio Someone once asked me to make them sound more like a doctor. I asked what a doctor sounds like and they said "Intelligent..." - True Story
i always say if you wanna sound the same way it sounded before you brought it to me then you shouldn't have, i say make the song larger than life because only the mixing engineer can do that.. looking fwd to the next Ep.
This would be 'next level' if you could buss into and out of each of the 8 FX modules within this plugin - so you could use just one instance across an entire mix but still have routing control of 8 individual fx sends/units/returns.
