"I try to let the music guide me; as to what I'm doing. That probably doesn't help much" Literally one of the most helpful pieces of advice a seasoned mixed engineer could give an up and comer.
Bob Clearmountain is a saint. Honestly what a wonderful mini documentary...I literally can't stop smiling. The man has a beautiful soul, and that's at the core of his work.
I've been lucky enough to work with Bob on a few projects. He is a true artist, not just an engineer. His ego is always in service to the song, and he is tireless. Staying up all night on herb tea and enthusiasm, it was revelatory to me as a young producer. Mad respect and appreciation.
I had the delight of having dinner with Bob back in the very late '80s when he was over in the UK doing single mixes. Such a humble, gentle thoughtful and intelligent man. Oh, and an utter audio genius.
Wow. What blew me away is his mindset of mixing. I am Audio Engineer myself a lot of his concepts of mixing are a lot like mines. Thats encouraging from someone as successful as Bob.
I WAS WORKING AT WOODSTOCK 94 ! RUNNING THE AUDIO/VIDEO AROUND THE COMPOUND !!! MY BOSS SAID WE NEED A/V IN THIS BUS . WE CLIMBED TREE'S AND RAN THROUGH PIPE'S TO BRING A/V TO THIS BUS .HE SAID THAT WAS BOB CLEARMOUNTAIN'S BUS !!!!! BOB HAD JUST PUT OUT DRUM SAMPLES !!!!! A DRUMMER I WAS WORKING WITH JUST BOUGHT THEM . I MEET BOB ON THE BUS !!!!!! JUST MY STORY OF MEETING BOB !!!!!!!
Undoubtedly one of the greatest. I imagine his personality has contributed to his success as much as his ear and technical chops. What a humble, down-to-earth guy! Wouldn’t you love to have a beer with him and talk music for hours?!
Great interview. He lets the music and his ears and experience/knowledge guide him. I mean, when you start out with Duke Ellington cussing out the horn player for being drunk! It's a good omen!
Awesome mini-documentary, thanks a lot for having made it! I love how Bob Clearmountain remained humble and down to earth. He's definitively a good example in many senses ;)
I love and idolise this man. The day I meet him would most likely be the greatest day of my life, sitting down with him and asking him questions, would be a dream for a young and aspiring engineer/mixer like myself.
Wow! Bob, you are an amazing storyteller. So thankful for you and Vintage King to have taken the time to create this video. I love the fact that you took us into the weeds with your passion for certain old school compressors. I have a real good feeling will be seeing more of you on the net,... ever consider doing an educational series of videos? Thank you Vintage King!
Unbelievable craftsman and yet so nice. I was a big fan of this man and I didn't even realize it. I started bassplaying because of him and Bernard Edwards. learned a lot of his chops back then. What a great story. Now I understand why both CHIC and the "some girls" Stones album are in my cupboard.
He's so HUMBLE, no one in the industry comes even close to Sir Bob Clearmountain, everyone becomes a douche after reaching a certain level, he's humble even after being the best in the industry and becoming the mixing engineer's mixer , like people who sell mixing books could learn a thing or two from him !
VK, you're providing a wonderful service to us. The interviews and the product demos/comparisons that you take the time and expense to create are very helpful and inspiring to me. I'm a customer forever. And.., wow...Bob Clearmountain - such an amazing and positive person with a great story. Thanks for this.
Oh man!! The best!! Clearmountain is KING!! I still remember the 1st time I heard Aimee Mann's "Save Me" with headphones...and its super NOT generic "panning." AWESOME!!!
Thanks Bob!! I should have been a sound engineer since my Dad was always setting up and recording for our church on reel to reel back in the 60's. However, since I was very much into Art I chose design engineering. Yet I still want to mix my own written music.
The first "Rock Star" of mixing, no doubt. I remember in High School hearing songs that the production/mixing just blew me away, only to find out 35 years later, those songs were mixed by Bob Clearmountain. I guess, even at 16 years old, I had an ear for excellence.
I just love this man. What a humble example to our stressed and blown-up-ego world of recording and mixing.

I'm too old to aspire but not to old to admire...Love your work.
The scale in the music world goes as following:
1-little know musician
2-known musician
3-famous musician
4-legend
5-bob clearmountain
Hell of a career, but,...what a nice humble guy.
A gentleman and legend 👌🏻
Nice interview with Bob Clearmountain. Seems like a sincerely nice person.
Miss You has the best drum sounds I've ever heard.

The nicest people are the best producers. They have a heart and it shows in their work. Period.
We love you Bob!
Such a modest guy! Respect to someone that can mix so well no matter the genre. So honest!
This man mixed my favorite records. But honestly, what amazes me the most is his attitude. Very humble and honest. Really looking up to this man.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest. I imagine his personality has contributed to his success as much as his ear and technical chops. What a humble, down-to-earth guy! Wouldn’t you love to have a beer with him and talk music for hours?!
his mixes are clear and big as a mountain

Serious legend. And like everyone else has noticed, a sincere and humble human being. Love your work sir!!! 🙏🏾 🌞
Great interview. He lets the music and his ears and experience/knowledge guide him. I mean, when you start out with Duke Ellington cussing out the horn player for being drunk! It's a good omen!
You only need to listen to the song Avalon on Roxy Music’s album by the same name to appreciate Bob Clearmountain’s skill.
Awesome mini-documentary, thanks a lot for having made it! I love how Bob Clearmountain remained humble and down to earth. He's definitively a good example in many senses ;)
Love the guy , so humble but such amazing work. He has and continues to make his mark

What a great attitude for a partner in art!
Much blessings Mr Clearmountain!
Legend! Lots to learn from this man. Just listen to his mixes. Everything has its own space and its dynamic. What a concept.
Bob's work with Toto is absolutely masterpiece. Especially the last songs from the Sony vault they re-recorded. Flawless.
I love and idolise this man. The day I meet him would most likely be the greatest day of my life, sitting down with him and asking him questions, would be a dream for a young and aspiring engineer/mixer like myself.
Wow. What a humble , gentle , soul. Great interview. How great would that be to have him mix one of your tracks? Insane to even think about.
So much excellent work with The Rolling Stones...
put on “Born in the USA” recently and the name “Clear-mountain” stood out to me as so funny - his mixes are so clear and sound so huge.
“Let the music guide you.” Powerful!
Very humble. What a career and visit card !
Zero ego. Humble.

A true legendary engineer/mixer.
Would love to sit next to him and mix, just for one song : )
I wish you could buy albums sorted by producers, mixers and engineers.

Like all the true greats he can't really describe what makes him great - he just is.
Love it! Bob's the best!

Bob seems like a very cool, likable guy. Right on!
Two of my top three Kool and the Gang songs were recorded by this guy. Impressive.
Amazing!!!!!
I must be one of the few people that prefer Bob Clearmountains remix CD of the Free classics. Sound so much better than the originals to my ears.
