One thing I found in my litter box cabinet (hacked Ikea Stuva) is that if you have a boy cat with bad aim there will be urine on the walls. This happened to my cat as well. Swished his tail over a votive that was on a table next to my chair, while hopping up onto my lap. I was able to put it out quickly, so only singed fur resulted, but never burned candles around cats again!

    • @kimberleyhosmer5997
      @kimberleyhosmer5997 3 года назад

      I do like this concept, but would agree that a protective mat in the bottom would serve as both a barrier to urine corroding the metal and an aid to reducing litter tracking. Use scented oil in an arrangement for scent, not an open flame. Too dangerous!

  • @Hall_Meli

    1. I love the idea of the treat capsules (1st product)- my two cats will roll their treat ball around until it's entirely empty. This spreads it out a bit more over a period of time.
    2. Love the concept of Pet Valu - and now I'm mad because I just realized there was a Pet Valu less than 3 miles away from where I used to live. How did I miss this?!
    3. LOVE THIS IDEA! I've struggled with hiding litter boxes in all of my apartments and stayed away from cabinets like this just due to lack of space, but now I'm thinking up scenarios where their mini cat tree could be attached to the top as well...
    I would love to see you do more pet things for your kitties! I realize there's probably not much more space you can work with/furniture you could add, but I love seeing little Lottie help you with things :)

    Curious how you found that litter worked, I tried it but found it held onto urine scent even after it was cleaned, not sure if it was just an issue with my cats urine. Ended up switching back to oko litter (wood based). I made one out of a cabinet in my laundry room, I put litter catching mats inside with a litter locker. I found without the mats the litter just fell onto the floor infront of the cabinet.

  • @KatarinaP81

    IDK if anyone wrote it already, but there's a double-layered matt specially designed for litter, prices on Amazon range from 1$ and up. Just put it under and in front of the box and all the residues fall from the cats' paws into it. Also, you can add small patches of non-woven filter fabric, the kind from stovetop aspirators, to the slots on the cabinet. I also use zeolite powder and it's great for absorbing smells.

    Just made a multipurpose variation of this out of an old medium sized bathroom vanity. Gave it a new plywood top, then put a set of steps/perches shall we say on it, then fixed them at varying heights so the cats can lay on them and even climb and play on, (a cat tower sort of idea) and a place under those steps for a couple of food bowls and even added casters. (Locking ones for the front wheels) Left the back off the vanity so I can pull it out to clean the boxes even easier, since the front doors weren't very wide, hence the wheels for easier moving. Since we were doing a bathroom reno and replacing the old vanity anyway, and knowing this was a trial and error project, we figured it's okay if we made mistakes on this one before making anything more costly and nicer for other parts of the house, since this one is in a bedroom area.

    You can use a jigsaw with a metal blade to cut out the door, too. :)

    Anyone who has tried this, how long did it take for the kitty to start using it. We are currently bribing them to get in the cabinet with yummy treats. They still won’t go in the car door. They will go in the large door then exit the cat door.

    I did this with a wood thing I have. Best thing EVER! But i didn't think of using a door. I just have a hole. Do these doors work on something more thick like wood and not just a thinner metal? It looks more finished. I love it!

    How did you teach your cats to use the pet door?

    • @krisano1prsn
      @krisano1prsn 4 года назад

      Yes, and what about if both cats have to use the box at the same time? The frame on the door is fine, but I would remove the flap.

    Oh my god, I swear by the automatic cat laser. I come home, I say hi to kitty and put it on when I try to cook or eat so she'll leave me alone xD Didn't realise I could stuff my kitty kong like my dog ones either... I'll have to try that

    Just checking - is that plant cat-safe? Some are toxic to cats.

    • @lisak7247
      @lisak7247 4 года назад

      Laurie Huttunen, I am pretty sure that plant IS toxic. It is a bummer...I had to give away my plants. I can't even have fake because I have one that eats those too! And the rest knock this off cabinets lol!

    I had a cabinet made like this a few years ago but it’s getting old and dingy. I already own this cabinet from IKEA so I might repurpose it as an upgrade. Awesome idea.

  • @mytrueserenity5666

    I suggest adding a cordless vacuum in the cabinet. There seems to be a hole on the floor on the left side of the cabinet to allow the charge cord to plug into a wall outlet behind the cabinet.

    Don't worry about litter getting out and all over. Use pine pellets. The floor and cabinet area are always clean. Works like a charm. Love your hack though.

    Hey Alexandra, I don't have a kitty (unfortunately 😅), but after seeing your video, I really want to change the knobs on my Ikea cabinet (I have the exact same one). Could you (or anybody else who is seeing this comment) please tell me which knobs you used? I am afraid of buying the wrong size 🤔 Thank you so much!!

    I did this years ago with a wooden chest. After a few months the wood had absorbed the urine smell and reeked. I would recommend a plastic liner.

    I like that it's metal. Most litter box furniture is wooden, and it just seems like odors would eventually seep into wood.

      Try the besta cabinets. They have more height. I had that before with no issues. Plus since its wood it's easier to cut the hole out.

    • @lezzleee
      @lezzleee 4 года назад

      @@janedoe932 Would think it wouldbe harder to cut without the right tools. Need a hands saw and to drill multiple holes down each line to fit it, or a jigsaw.
