For all the people that worry about the smell: Get a litter locker (or something similar) and scoop mornings, midday, and evenings. I have basically no smell, although I have two open top litter boxes in a small-ish apartment (placed in the bathroom and the toilet room, I keep the doors opened except I'm in there). I also use a plant-based litter ("cats's best"), which smells like hay when the cats used the box and dug around. Can highly recommend.
Also, if you can, please consider placing the litter boxes somewhere kind of central in your home and use an open top one (where kitty can easily jump in and out, like the litter locker one), as that is the closest they can get to their natural habits. Peeing is a way to mark their territory, so when the litter box is central and they (NOT you) can smell it, they know they are home and feel safe. Highly recommend Jackson Galaxy's videos on this!

Pine pellets!! I haven't used them yet because I'm still finishing off my walnut litter but a 40lb bag is only $6.50!! And the pellets turn into sawdust from the cat pee and they're of course compostable. There's some great videos on RUclips talking about them.

I live in an apartment with a teeny 6 lb cat and 2 big dogs (one is my roommates, one is mine). We had to figure out a solution to keep the dogs out of the cat food and litter.
I ended up taking the door off of my walk-in closet and replacing it with a baby/pet gate that has a small door in the bottom where kitty can go in and out. I keep the litter box in my closet (yes, really!), covered and in it's own corner "cubby" area, and I scoop it once per day. I also keep those baking soda odor eliminators near the box and change them every two weeks. I've never had a problem with a smell on my clothes or in the closet. Food is on a tray on top of my dresser to cut down on spillage.
It's worked perfect for us! Dogs can't get into things they shouldn't, and my cat has a safe haven when she doesn't feel like being bothered by my puppy!

I’m now in a house, but the cat’s litter box is in our guest washroom (after many attempts to relegate it to the laundry room) and as far as we can tell, there’s no smell! Lottie is precious! I have 4 kittycats myself, and couldn't live without my litter-robot open-air 3. Game changer. I'll be moving into a tiny house in around 6mths, and had them incorporate a special cupboard for it (underneath a partial dropped platform beside my lofted bedroom), which opens into the bathroom. No litterbox in this girls tiny house kitchen! I also ordered components for a wall play system for my beasties, which are coming from several places, including MyZoo Japan (if you're in Canada, you need to order directly from Amazon Japan and the shipping is admittedly extremely expensive, but it's worth it IMHO for the Luna and Star, and they will actually help you navigate doing this via their FaceBook page, wonderful customer service). Also, ordered pieces from 3 different Etsy shops in Russia, the Ukraine, and the US, that include a long bridge, a cloud with a see-through clear acrylic dish bed, and paw shaped steps with sisal. Even chose a tiny house model with them in mind (the Heritage by Summit Tiny Homes of B.C.). It has a bay window that juts out over the trailer tongue, giving them the ultimate cat bird seat.

@@ayyaz.4864 Thanks for the comments :). I would start by sitting with one cat at a time in the car -- don't start the car/go anywhere, just be with them one at a time in the car. Let them (individually) get used to the idea of being in the car...for several weeks. Then, put them in the car together, again, don't start the car or go anywhere. Just be with them in the car. After a few weeks when they are comfortable with the idea, start the car, but don't go anywhere. Let them get used to the feeling and sound of the car starting and idling...then after a few more weeks drive some, maybe around the block...you get it: build on each change so their anxiety is lessened. That's how I would attempt it: what do you think?

@@twilde3754 Thank you SO much for replying. This is such a great tip!! I didn't even think about easing them into getting used to being in the car, still let alone moving! I think they do associate being in the car = going to the vets, and I thought taking them to different destinations by car might help them overcome that fear but in retrospect, your perspective is a lot more logical! I will definitely try your suggestions because one of them loved hopping into the car when we got home (albeit only from our street to the garage haha) when they were still outdoor cats. Again, thank you kindly! You and your cat have a blessed day!

So, a few things: Litter boxes in smaller/confined areas with limited ventilation will create more dust and odor. If you have a space under a window, that is your best option because dust and odor will go out. For odor, look for air neutralizers. Deoderizers mask smells--neutralizers absorb. Baking soda is your best friend, but do not put in the litter box as some cats can have a reaction to their paws. For people wanting nice furniture---vets can put on 'caps', that cover your cat's claws. This makes them dull and that limits damage to furniture. It is also not difficult to clip your cats claws if you are comfortable with animals. Have your vet teach you how. :) For older/younger cat combinations, make sure both kitties have their own space. I had two senior kitties and my Mom had to stay with me to recover from surgery with her kitten. My place isn't huge, but it had enough space to allow her kitten to romp and play and my two to enjoy their senior time.

    Litter box location!
I live in a small, one bedroom apartment and I tried this solution which worked really well.
I took the doors off my bathroom vanity and placed a litter mat to line the bottom of the cabinet. I put two open boxes inside, along with an auto febreez sprayer and my litter genie. I installed a tension rod with curtains to cover the entrance which helps with the small and litter tracking. Any additional litter tracked out gets caught on my bathmat which I then just shake into the trash.
I did just start using pine litter though and it is life changing!! Doesn’t smell AT ALL and you only have to scoop the solid waste.

Getting older cats from a shelter instead of a kitten really helps with the over populated sanctuaries. Also, if you can, adopt a cat that is a few years older than the kitten, at the same time as the kitten, so there's no stress on the very elderly cat for playing, etc, as it may change the personality and temperament of the elderly cat, making their last years unpleasant. Having 2 other cats nearer in age can let the Granny cat get involved if she wants. ♥

My litter alternative is wood pellets, commonly used as horse bedding. It’s super inexpensive at stores like Fleet and Farm. ($6.50 for 40lbs! Lasts for months) The wood pellets turn to sawdust after getting wet; it’s easy to clean using a sifting litter box. Also, it doesn’t smell like litter, it has a woodsy smell up close, even with all the kitty gifts in it. I came across this idea on RUclips.

I live in a 600sq ft 1 bedroom in SF with my hubby & 2 cats. We have a hallway about 2 feet by 4ish ft. one side is the door to the garage, one side is the door to the bathroom, one side is the door to a closet, and then the last side is the open door to the living room/kitchen. Long story, but our upstairs neighbor actually parks in the garage on the side our door goes out to, so we don't access the garage that way. That's where we put our huge 2 kitty sized litter box, blocking that door. It's out of the way, you only see it if you're going to the bathroom your self. It's worked thus far for us!

(for cat door solutions for Apts scroll down)
My cat Oliver (who passed a year ago) was my ESA and traveled by plane and car with me 😊 when he was still a baby I made sure to get him used to wearing a cat halter/leash (they are different from dogs), his crate for the car and the one for the airplane were always out for him to lie on and he had a special travel sweater and blanket. So when I put the halter on him with his sweater, he knew it was time to travel and it kinda acted like an anxiety blanket for him the first year. He also learned to not use the "litter box" when we traveled after the first year. Usually I put his halter and sweater on, he'd go use the litter and then we'd pack up and go and once those came off, he'd use the litter box again. He did amazing!
When we drove he knew he had to stay in his crate until it was a smoother, straight ride and when we arrived to gas stations or rest stops, he knew to climb back into the crate. He had a leash to seat belt attachment. On the plane he would have to get his paws swabbed so we got him used to us touching his paws (we do that anyway so we can have him used to the vet checking his paws and claws) so he was used to me having to take him out of the airplane cat carrier. We used the blanket to help with anxiety when traveling so he always had a "home spot" when I traveled that he felt safe in or on other than his crates.
I had three cats one point, Oliver and my twin cats so I had one in the bathroom, one in my brother's bathroom and two outside on the balcony. We bought a screen door attachment that fits into standard screen doors for about $50. It allowed for them to access the balcony freely and kept bugs out and the apt warm/cool. A friend bought the same thing for her sliding door for her closet to keep her dog from the litter box because the door is too small for him!

I would also add, make sure they feel safe while they’re in their carrier, keep the bumps and movement to a minimum while your going back and forth from your car to your destination. And for the hot months, get some ice packs or frozen water bottles to help them cool off.

In regards to couches, Suede is also very good for cat owners (or a very thick faux suede). It's soft, comfortable, and durable. Plus, if they somehow manage to penetrate the suede, the natural elasticity of the suede tends to synch up around the hole on its own, making it hard to find. But, it's so thick that the cats will most likely not be able to penetrate it in the first place. If they are like my cats, it's so comfortable that they will just want to sleep on it as apposed to clawing at it. 😂

I used to have a poodle who hated the car. He would cry as soon as he realised that he was going in the car. He was an older dog and was not used to travel at all. He was a city dog and one I brought him with me to may dad's. My dad lives in the middle of the woods and it gets very dark at night. The dog didn't like to be outside when it was dark... He was definitely an odd dog. But I still loved him.

I use a walnut based litter called Naturally Fresh and I really like it, I always scoop every morning and there is no smell. I also use an open top litter box. I have a 13 1/2 year old male kitty, and a 4 1/2 year old black female kitty, they seem to get along just fine, he often grooms her, and they lay on the same bench and she likes to be as near to him as she can, I got her when she was about two years old. I keep their litter box in the extra bathroom, that is just the half bath and so far it's working just fine, I'm thinking when I get my back porch expanded this next year I will put the litter box back their with a special spot designed just for the litter box. Thanks for this video, Lottie is just so dang cute, see you soon, bye for now.

Your kitties are beautiful. I have one cat, Frankie, and I don't use cat litter. I toilet trained Frankie. I feel that this is a healthier way of living with a cat, but not just for me. Some litters are unhealthy for the cat as well. I didn't teach him how to flush but I really don't mind flushing the toilet several times a day, rather than dealing with cat litter.

The litter robot is our best friend! It cleans itself after each cat uses it, it's enclosed, and we only need to empty it about once a week! We do have a little maze set up in front of the entrance to minimize the litter flinging that happens when the cats exit the box. We keep it in our bedroom closet.

Our all time favorite litter has been the Arm & Hammer Naturals. It's made of wood fibers. No dust. No smell even when I forget to scoop the box for a day.
Right now, our litter box is sitting in a corner in our hallway, but we're planning a trip to Ikea to get a cabinet to make a litterbox hide. I'll just cut a hole in the side and mount a cat-flap.
Lottie was not having it lol. Just done.

I have a Litter Robot, got it last year. It is big but man, LIFE CHANGING. In combination with World's Best which is a biodegradable litter too. I live in a one bed flat but I'm lucky to have a utility space so it lives in there. Honestly, best investment I've ever made in relation to the cats. Eye wateringly expensive but worth saving for. Tracking is an issue but I picked up a door mat from Ikea, the second least expensive I think it was and it's more effective than actual litter mats sold at pet stores.

I have two rescue cats. I sprinkle arm and hammer baking soda in the bottom every couple of days. I purchased a Littermaid box about 4 years ago because I was away for my job. It senses when the cat leaves the box and rakes the litter and dumps into a covered compartment. I empty the compartment every couple of days and change receptacles every two weeks. There's no smell. I keep it in the bathroom. I use dust-free, clay free litter. I've read that dusty litters may cause respiratory issues in cats. I feed all-natural food, no preservatives and there is a difference in poo odors.

We have a linen closet in the bathroom so we cut a hole in the bottom cabinet door and the littler box is in there. My dad even installed a motion sensor light for her 😂. The smell is contained in the cabinets it works so well! For renters you could get a different cabinet door so you could cut a hole in it and then when you move out you could put the original door back.

  • @Marvulven

To avoid smell just empty it, at least two times a day. I have a open litter box and in the bathroom, I empty it whenever I seen my cat has used it. If I forget she will tell me quickly, she’s a clean classy lady and does not like the smell same as me. Cats hide their business for a reasons - they do not want it to smell. So the litter box in our home does not smell at all. I used wood pellets for a while and you could flush it down the toilet, that was a plus though my cat does like to hide things better so I converted to regular clay litter for her sake.

I use the Tidy Cats Breeze system sold at Petsmart. A little expensive but well worth it. The box (with top or not) has a top area and a lower tray where the pee separates from the poo. It certainly keeps the odor at bay. You change the litter every 3-4 weeks and change the pee pads every few days. It is a wonderful system compared to the rock litter I used to use. Always sweeping. Now there are only a few pellets that escape but not many. My cat loves it and ensures I scoop it every day.

Favourite litter : Cloud Control by arm and hammer. Lower priced than alternative litter materials. But not the cheapest. But, I think it's worth it BC there is no dust at all, clumps good, and has a mild pleasant scent.
Place to put litter box : I keep them in the bathroom. I got the corner boxes and find them easier to quickly clean and see the mess over a litter box with a top. I clean them about 3-4 times a day. Basically, whenever there is mess. Does not smell like cat in my apartment. Also, the Litterlocker is a life saver. Perfect for apartments, it's a separated litter garbage can. Empty a couple times a week and keep the smells contained.

The Furrytail Glow House litter box changed my tiny apartment life! It’s similar to the igloo but has a gorgeous pitched roof design and a slightly bigger turning space for chonky kitties. It works for my big fluffy butt Persian Bambi so it might be a good option for Harriet? I also love that it has a front access door and a pullout tray so you dont have to disassemble the whole thing for cleanup. Theres even a little draw that stores the included scoop and little dustpan brush.
I’ve also been using Tofu litter, its a game changer right?! I found a Japanese brand called Michu that has an unscented original version as well as fun “flavours” that come in different scents and matching colors which dont smell too overpowering. Bambi is currently using the Peach because I loved that its pink! One bag lasts a month so I try to pick up a couple when they’re on sale for around $12 AUD

I use litter paper made from newspaper that's similar to the pine kind, it's non clumping and disintegrates when it gets wet. I keep my litter box in the bathtub. I use World's Best Cat Litter - the best non-smelling litter I've found so far and not very expensive. It's septic friendly so I flush the waste in the toilet and since the litter box is stored in the tub, it usually means less tracking in my small apartment and any granules are easily cleaned out of the tub. When guests come over I can just keep the shower curtain pulled over so you can't see the box. I have very little storage space with zero extra room in the rest of my apartment for a litter box so this is the best solution I could find - and honestly, when I eventually move somewhere larger, I will continue to do it.

I keep my litter box in an ikea sink cabinet that was DIYed to also act as an entryway table. We just put a piece of wood on top of the unit to act as the table top, and cut a hole in the side for the cats to go in and out. You can paint it or decorate the unit any way which is great, and the litterbox stays inside the bottom of the cabinet.

Microfiber, also called microsuede, ultrasuede or faux suede, is one of the most popular materials used on sofas and chairs. The density of the material gives it the ability to stand up to a cat's paws, which also tends to make it less appealing to scratch on.

Glad to hear that Marty is in a good home. I was worried about him! I also keep my little box in a closet in my bedroom. We scoop it everyday or more often if my Hatti girl makes a stinky! It works for me and for her. She also is very big, so I have a large open litter box. She has never scratched on my furniture because when she was young and started that, I would lightly squirt her with water. The really gets their attention. And i make sure she has a scratch box she likes. So 8 years now I have had her and no scratched furniture.

I have three cats, so 4 litter boxes. I use silica sand and doesn't smell at all, we'll only at the same moment they make their things. I clean them twice a day and change the whole sand and wash the trays quite often, when needed. They all have lids with a swing door. I keep one in the powder room, one in the kitchen and two outside in a balcony that has a cat door so they can go out and in whenever they want to. I live in a 90 square metres (969 square feet) flat and we have plenty of room for all of us, although for some reason I always wake up in the edge of the bed and one or two of my cats cuddled up very close to me. They are all rescued cats. Greetings from Spain.

the top entering litter box was a life-saver for a while. I had the largest size and it definitely did the job of keeping litter off the ground as well as looking cute. I recently had to buy a normal hooded litter tray though because my 10-month-old kitten (who is 12 lbs) got too big for it and required more space to move around. I plan on still using it for his sister though because she's a lot smaller.

My kitty travels with me basically twice every 3-4 months, we only travel for about 4 hours at a time. We have been traveling like this for 3 years now (she turns 3 in April, she's been a travel kitty since day 1), but just these last 2 times she has pooped in her carrier, which she has never done. The first time it was because she got sick, and i think it is she recognized that when she got sick the first time, she got to ride the rest of the way on my lap. So i think she did it the second time on purpose, cause as soon as I took her out of her carrier, she climbed into my lap and fell asleep... Not sure what I'm gonna do with her if she does it again lol

Good tips! Wonder why you have not reported on wall shelving for cats? Jackson Galaxy is the cat guy on youtube who explains about that. And there are many very creative cat runs built close to ceilings, that circle rooms and cats love!

We use heating wood pellets for litter. I've made custom boxes to act as a sitter box. My cats are annoying that they dig so aggressively that they kick the pellets out but not as much as usual pellets. It doesn't smell worse then regular litter and as long as they cover their poop, it does mask the scents real good.

Swheat Scoop for litter! It's like 40 bucks for 36 lb and it's made of wheat, so you can flush it down the toilet. If you shovel it every day or two it doesn't smell, and there's no dust! It's also readily available in store and it's on Amazon!
I live in a studio apt so very limited on space for a litter box.. and it sounds silly but I have an open litterbox with handles and I keep it in my bathtub. It's like an oval shape not rectangular and I have a little plastic mat that catches the litter at the "entrance". I just carry it in and out of the bathtub to shower. It's great cause I can flush the litter that gets out of the box down the drain and it's never blocked it!
