    I'm leaving this comment for other cat parents who might experience the same thing. I switched to wood pellets and soon after, I noticed that one of my cats wasn't eating as well as before. Within a few months, her eyes would run steady, she stopped eating almost completely and would vomit off and on. Of course, I brought her to the vet and we tried a few different medications to get her appetite back. I started wondering if it could be the switch to wood pellets? After all, her tearing and loss of appetite came about around the same time as the switch so I switched back to the old litter. Within a day or two, she was cleaning her plate, her eyes were no longer tearing constantly and no more vomitting. I hate that I can't use the wood pellets anymore because I got used to not having to clean as much (way less dust and tracking) and it smelled so much better but her health is much more important. So, if you switch to wood pellets in the litter box and soon after, your cat's appetite diminishes, it could be that they're allergic!! Cats don't like to eat what they can't smell and allergies can cause them to lose their sense of smell!!

      I’m so sorry to hear it affected your cat that way! Thank you for making people aware that it could not suit all felines. Can I ask if the wood pellets you used were kiln dried? The bag I purchased from PetCo stated to be “100% Chemical Free” and had no added fragrances.

      there are many type of wood pellets, maybe pine pellets that you got are toxic to your cat, try other type of wood in pellets.

    • @keristevenson2757
      @keristevenson2757 4 года назад +28

      If the pine pellets aren’t kiln dried the resin in the pine pellets is very dangerous to your cat. If you remember what one you used it would be great to know if the one you used was or wasn’t kiln dried. Please update!

    I just started. Kept their old litter and add several scoops of pine each day. Working out great. For 3 cats I was spending $45 a months, at least. No more expensive scoopable litter. Yippee!

      How long does one bag last you for 3 cats? I have 4 cats and thinking of switching to pine because I spend so much per month on litter.

    • @godisnotmocked1345
      @godisnotmocked1345 2 года назад +1

      @@AznRUs I don't remember. I did it about 6 months but it got old because it's more time consuming than scooping. You also need to stay on top of it more than scoopable litter; for the fumes. However, it's worth the try. It lasted a lot longer; loads cheaper. I drilled holes in the bottom of the original litter boxes and got some tubs to hold those in from Walmart, like 5 or $7 each. Then when I stopped I just kept the same set up. So, technically, I could always go back. I'm not sure, but it seems like the scoopable little better. It is softer on their feet/paws.

    I just finished creating my own sifting litter box! I used 2 really large (24” x 18” x 13” tall) plastic storage bins from Walmart. I bought a 6” rectangle of styrofoam, and cut into 4ths to use as spacers, even tho they were already spaced about an 1” to stack by manufacturer. I may pick up some free scrap pcs of wood later at Lowe’s, if these deteriorate. I cut a 10”x 10” entry hole on the long side using a Dremel wheel & sanded any rough edges. I kept the top of one unit to store underneath it, so I can rest the ‘top’ on it, while I’m emptying the bottom sawdust. Since it’s big and kind of obtrusive, I painted & repurposed an enclosed printer/desk cabinet kind of thing (28” x 15” x 29” tall), I found on FB marketplace) it to ‘hide’ it in laundry room. It all came together great, despite me retro-fitting the furniture piece (removing drawer, bottom divider, etc...). I bought Tractor Supply’s brand of 40 lb, kiln dried, wood pine pellets for $5.99. I’m thrilled with the results & reduced expense. 😇

And Meow Mix...is that the one with dyes in it that makes them throw up a lot and stains what they throw up on?

    We've been using pine pellets for our 3 cats for a year now, and would never go back. Very little odor. Because we have 3 cats, I made them a nice big litterbox using an under bed storage container, it's like a potty playpen for them and they love it. When they were all fully grown, and I found that one of them was pooping in the shower, I figured out they needed either multiple litter boxes or a large enough litterbox that they all had their own space to "do their business". No problems since.

  • @TimeIdle
    @TimeIdle 4 года назад +10

    There are pellets type of scoop you can use, one where the pellets would fall through and the poop would remain. I transitioned my cat by adding pellets to the old litter box more and more, 20%, 50%... 75%.... And then switch to the new litter box without the old litter. Nice DIY upgrade litter box.

    I started using pine pellets a couple months ago to try it out and to save a couple extra dollars, so far I havent had any issues with it. But for anyone who cant use pine pellets I recommend paper pellets they dont have as much dust, and they absorb the smell really well the only this is you still have to scoop it but it's pretty easy since the dirty pellets sort of clump together.

    I found a hooded Breeze box at a garage sale and use the Tractor Supply pellets. The dust sifts through to the drawer and then I scrape it into a small trash can. It's a little challenging but maybe I'll get a small squeegee for it, plus I only have to empty it about once a week. I also made a scooper with bigger holes out of a yogurt container. Works great!

  • @angelasmith6526
    @angelasmith6526 Год назад

    I'm doing this now for my cats. I highly recommend having an x-large puppy pad under the sifter. Believe me, it makes this system even better! Just watch the video that she recommends that you watch.. If you are diy this, you want to use a 1/4 inch drill bit to drill the holes in the sifting pan, and just screw in 4 legs using a 2x2 piece of wood on the sifting pan, I cut the legs to about 2 1/2 inches long for all 4 legs, please don't use metal hole saw cutters, they are fn expensive! There's other videos that let you know exactly what containers/litter boxes work, so you don't have to spend a ton of $... I hope this helps..

    I have 13 cats and made this switch about a year ago. I am wondering why I didn't do it sooner I do use concrete mixing tubs that I got from Lowe's. Those are much cheaper than any litter box you can get and bigger. I can't believe how the smell has gone away. You would think that expensive scoopable little would control the oder better.

      I wondered the same thing! It looks like the metal pan fits inside the plastic pretty good without leaving to large of a gap on the side that would potentially allow whole, unused, pellets to fall to the bottom and mixing in with the soiled product. Just what I came up with. Not sure what the OP's reasoning was.

      By now you probably have yours figured out but I'm going to reply just in case. She did use two inside the planter litter box...there was the darker, rubbery looking one that is a feeding dish for bigger animals that went in the bottom and then inside that she put the aluminum looking one that her dad drilled the holes in, so it falls through to the darker one she can then just pull out and dump and clean and put back in. 😊

    Simpler to keep two litter boxes for the first week or two. One with pellets and the other with litter to help your cat transition and not try to hold their poop.
    My issue was I didn’t like having to shake the tray or shuffle the pellets. It felt like I was playing with the pellets. Just annoying.
    Also if the pellets are close to your room you will here the cat at night. Sounds like the cat is kicking marbles against the hood of the box.
    However, what happens if the cat has diarrhea. I don’t want to find out. 😩

      I actually do this and it works fine, as long as you clean it out regularly. Every two days or so we scoop out the poop, but I also try to sift out some of the dust with my scooper into trash bag, since the scoopers have slats. That isn’t perfect though, so once a week I completely empty out both litter boxes and rinse them in the bath tub. I wouldn’t recommend this, because it is much more time consuming, but it’s definitely doable. You do also need to use more litter, but that’s not really a big issue because it’s so so cheap.

    Make sure the pellets are KILN DRIED! If pine oil is still left in the pellets it can be very harmful to the kitties.

    Beware when they poop, it stinks up your whole house, cause it doesn't soak in...

    I'm so glad you posted this video. I'm worried because my cat hasn't used the pine litter since I fully transition her. I did the combination parts and the pine is so much that I struggle to clean the litter box at the same time save pine wood. That's why I decide to turn it all pine litter so it's easier to sift n safe to flush down the toilet. Hopefully she will use it soon 💖

      thank you! glad you found it helpful. all our cats are different so maybe she’ll need more time to get used to the change but hopefully she gets the hang of it soon and you’re both relieved 💛

    I've never found a pellet litter that hides odor well or does smell like wet newspaper and ammonia.

    All that time and trouble, first if the pan was cleaned daily there would be no "odor", pine pellets from Tractor Supply are great and cost $6.00 for a 40 b bag (if you have one locally), this planter/litter holder is not big enough for a cat - do you like using a Porta Potty? It never ceases to amaze how much time and money folks will invest to doing a DIY version of anything to "save money". Ai Yi Yi Good luck with that. My cats have been using pine pellets for years and it is the way to go.

      Oh bummer! Have you tried to mix the clumping litter and the pine pellets together? Try using more clump litter than pine litter and slowly week after week get rid of the clump litter. Hope that’s helpful!

      @@kindlyheidy yes I tried that, but she still didn't get used to it. I have one litter box with pine pellets and another one with clumping wood litter. She uses the clumping one the most and she will pee in the pine pellets every once in a while. I have a huge bag of pine pellets left lol

    • @BrioaZ
      @BrioaZ 4 года назад +3

      @@jocelync8236 I mixed in only a handful of pine pellets to transition slowly lol so basically 10% pine pellets with their old litter. Doing it slowly means doing it reeeeaaally slow for picky cats. So use only a handful of the new litter for a month. Lol then 2 handfuls next month
