A short video explaining a few fuel related problems that can cause your ldv maxus van or chrysler voyager to have starting issues or break down altogether.
Sorry mate, it might be rustic this van but that makes it simple and maintainable by us drivers. A snooty 'professional' once told me the Maxus wouldn't cut it, I needed a Sprinter if I was going to do international work. 9 years later doing UK-Brittany-Corsica (1800 mile round trip, monthly) the only time it stranded me was for a clutch slave cylinder - not a real failure and certainly not an LDV problem. Like everything it likes being used, long trips (i.e not stop/start) are best for longevity. Plus I look after it well. The VM motor is nothing short of brilliant ( extraordinary mileages in the FX4 taxi) as well as economic and quiet. Yes there are problems (rust isn't really one of them) around electrics and starting but they're relatively easy if you're half useful and certainly no worse than other vans/ vehicles. Or you can pay big money for a newer van........sure I'd like to
Thanks for this video, this was key to our solution.... Our 2005 Maxus was easy-start only, even when hot. Been like this for months, and everyone has a different theory as to the issue. So.... we pulled the rubber line off and as you said fuel pissed out even cranking over. We turned up a plastic plug to block the outlet, hammered in on, and the van started first crank, before blowing off our plug. So this confirmed the issue. We then undid the 17mm bolt (at the RH of the common rail) which is the valve assembly, cleaned it, blew it all out with an air gun, reassembled, and now it starts! Clearly there was some crud in there holding the valve open very slightly. Total cost of repair - £0.00 Note that now it's working again, fuel does still come out of the hose outlet on the common rail, but at a much lower rate.
Many thanks Alan I had en engine cut out on road test after changing fuel filter thought it was electrical but your video the later part re- fuel pump made me have another look and sure as S***t is S***t I found the broken drive to the rear end of the pump now looking for a replacement pump. cheers.
Hi great video! One question: i have jeep 2.8 crd which cuts out when accelerating medium to hard. Restarts again no problem but if i drive it up to 2k rpm it is fine, but when i try to push the throttle and go over 2k rpm then shuts down. Since now i've changed Fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure sensor. Thanks!!
Cheers for scaring the crap out of me; I own one and I was just looking to see where and how to change the glow plugs. I've got a 4.500 mile trip ahead of me including the Balkans.
Bollocks...done 145.000 so far and all i have done my self so far is timing kit plus regular services brakes wipers and visit my local tyre shop every 2 years for shoes around it...oh...forgot to mention 2 batterys and 1 radiator so far in 12 years time...
They not bad vans I had my water pump and cam belt Don £350 happy with that hoping to keep the van a long time my mate as a new transit and he's ad more problems Than me
Does the fuel pump still work with that broken part ? I have a 2007 Maxus with a Euro 4 compliant engine and the pressure sensor at the end of the rail now looks to be controlled by the ECU as there is now a plug going to it, the technical manual says its a DRV which works in conjunction with the metering valve (i'm not confusing this with the Common rail pressure sensor at the other end of the rail which is also has a plug on it)
Timing belt and water pump on a Maxus £650 including parts done by a mobile fitter who does them all the time on your drive if need be. Definately worth doing.
Sam H Hi, it was quite some time ago I had the misfortune to deal with a maxis but chances are the glow plug relay is under the bonnet. I would follow the live wire from glow plugs... these relays are normally quite large and found near inner wing under bonnet
hi, yes it is quite possible that the engine will idle but will take a dump when you pull away but it could be some other problem and really needs checking out by a mechanic
alan howatt thanks for getting back to me much appreciated gonna have go tomorrow see what's up 😥 booked van in on Wednesday at local garage hopefully one way or another can be back on the road
I know this is a slim chance given the age of this video but need help with my maxis. Basically it's got zero power below turbo. Also when you first start it it won't rev up for first 5 mins untill warm and will have no power. Having to use clutch a lot to get it moving. The last owner replaced accelerator pedal and had ECU send for a scan. ECU was fine and pedal hasn't fixed issue. Sometimes it will seemingly work fine when feathering throttle then power goes again. It's doing my head in and I've no idea where to look. I noticed it's had its map sensor removed but I don't think that should have this affect. Also I have replaced oil and filters. It doesn't smoke or anything but has a smell of fuel when it's being particularly bad. I'm lost now as to what to check. Anyone who has any information or advice would be much appreciated.
You're a doom merchant. Jeez, I would rather have a Maxus than a Transit or Sprinter rust bucket. Yes, it may take longer to change certain items, but this is the trade off for owning a sturdy van. The engine is made by VM Motori, not Chrysler, but the 2.5L version engines are used in the Voyager and Jeep Cherokee. There is a Euro 3 and a Euro 4 version of the same engine also, with the latter being used from 2007 onwards in the Maxus. The Fuel Pressure Sensor is available to buy separately, or give the existing one a quick clean & a blow through, rather than buying a new Fuel Rail. The fuel rails hardly ever go, but the sensors do! Nevertheless, a good video, but less doom and gloom about the Maxus!
lol, if i were you i would walk away, these vehicles are badly built, also it will cost you stupid amount of money just to replace the cam belt. everything on these vehicles is not good, the british never did make a good van and after the sherpas and ldv convoys the maxus was even worse. if it won't start, be prepared for more of the same...holy shit, its up to you but i would not even entertain one. if you google search ldv maxus reviews see what other people who own them say.
a transit is a step in the right direction, no cam belt to worry about. apart from rust issues, fuel injectors and high pressure pumps are common problems but overall a better vehicle and a lot easier to work on
Hi my ldv maxus has starting problem turns over but won't start if you have this problem wot I do is go to the fuel priming pump and pump it then turn over the engine once then pump it then turn it over and it starts this is not a problem it is part of ldv ani theft haha .you can fit a non return valve this should stop it happin hope this helps someone out there
What a load of shite you speak. Italian engine vm motori. Reliable but slow and noisy used in tx4 black cab Jeep cherokee. The vans don't really suffer from rust and are sturdy with a higher payload than most transits .
Good video Alan - will help a lot of LDV Maxus owners
My one cut out and not starting so thank you for this mate
had mine 3 years great van better than rust buket mk 6 7 ford

Hey thanks for your comment.
Glad this video was of some use to you.
That's a cp3 there very reliable.
There great Van's we have just done water pump Campbell etc no probs 👍

There good vans
you can get the valve separate on e bay
Thanks for the video! I done the test and fuel came out but I cant seem to find the prv to change it? Any suggestions?
The sensor can go as well no fuel and no start good video well done that man.

John Drew Did it make it ?
Is coment was 2 years ago so don't think he did.rip John drew
Thanks I was thinking of buying a LDV V80, at least if I buy new, i get 3 years warranty.

Your one of the lucky ones hope it keeps going for you.

hi, when that lug in the fuel pump breaks which is quite common, the pump will not work at all and the vehicle will stop and not restart
Ok many thanks

thats a difficult job, have done water pump and timing belt so very good price
Was wondering if you know where the relay is for the glow plugs on the maxus?
Sam H

It's under the battery tray
Would the same problem occur on acceleration as my van starts but doesn't want to rev up ??

No need to replace whole rail for the pressure relief valve. They are available separately for about £40- £50.
30 now on ebay mate
chil man Bargain. When I replaced mine they were about 90. That was a fair few years ago.
I know this is a slim chance given the age of this video but need help with my maxis.

you really need to get any fault codes out of the ecu and have the fuel pressure read as it could be a faulty high pressure fuel pump

thankyou for the video. i'm thinking of buying ldv maxus which wont start, its cheap but the body is good and only 55000 miles. do you think i'm mad?

mmm your not painting much of a picture, is 2005 to 10 transit any better? prob with transit is rust thats why i was thinking maxus

apart from rust issues, fuel injectors and high pressure pumps are common problems but overall a better vehicle and a lot easier to work on
ok whats the van you recomend as a mechanic?
mercedes vito or sprinter, updated model from 2004 onwards....they rust like hell but are reliable

Did you get this issue sorted by fitting a non return valve in the fuel pipe for the pump ?
What a load of shite you speak.
