- On the first episode of "The Art of Punk" we dissect the art of the legendary Black Flag. From the iconic four bars symbols, to the many coveted and collected gig flyers, singles, and band t-shirts, all depicting the distinctive Indian ink drawn image and text by artist Raymond Pettibon. We start off in Los Angeles talking to two founding members singer Keith Morris, and bass player Chuck Dukowski, about what the scene was like in 1976 - setting the stage for the band's formation, as well as the bands name, and the creation of the iconic four bars symbol. Raymond Pettibon talks with us from his New York art studio. Back in LA we meet with Flea, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, about how the art, the music, and that early LA scene impacted his own life and career. To wrap it all up we sit and talk at length, with Henry Rollins, at MOCA Grand Ave in Los Angeles, about all of the above and more.
Created, directed, and Executive Produced by writer/author of 'Fucked Up + Photocopied', Bryan Ray Turcotte (Kill Your Idols), and Bo Bushnell (The Western Empire), The Art Of Punk traces the roots of the punk movement and the artists behind the iconic logos of punk bands such as: Black Flag (Raymond Pettibon), The Dead Kennedys (Winston Smith), and Crass (Dave King).
In addition to profiling the artists, the series includes intimate interviews with former band members, notable artists, and celebrities who have been heavily influenced by the art of punk rock including Jello Biafra, Tim Biskup, Scott Campbell, Chuck Dukowski, Flea, Steve Olson, Penny Rimbaud, Henry Rollins, Owen Thornton, and Gee Vaucher.
The filmmakers Bryan Ray Turcotte and Bo Bushnell take a unique approach to exploring the rich histories of these three seminal punk legends by focusing on the influential imagery and seeking out stories that have not been told yet through the artwork, which is integral to the importance and influence of each band.
On June 11, 2013 The Art Of Punk debuts on MOCAtv with an episode on Raymond Pettibon and the artwork of Black Flag. The stories behind the art of the Dead Kennedys will debut on June 18, and June 25 will see the release of the Crass episode, all of which will be available at: / mocatv

ArtIsForYou20
my name is raymond pettibon and i designed this muthafucking thang
timeless
"Probably one of the more popular tattoos besides, swastikas... or whatever"
I have the 4 bars tattooed on my bicep.
I thought the misfits skull was the number 1 band tattoo.
People who tattoo band logos on themselves are complete morons… unless you’re in the band
I have the bars and a Misfits tattoo. 😊
Or whatever🧐
I love how the whole purpose of this video is "the art of punk" yet anytime there's an image of the artwork it cuts away after a nano-second, then zooms in on the image, then does some effects on the image. Can I look at the fucking image for one god damn second without having to keep my finger on the pause button?
the art of rollins
It's most likely because the don't wanna risk getting sued by Greg Ginn.
use the pause?
Charles J Gartner buy a fucking art book you shit ass
Art is more than just physical
I laughed when I saw flea sitting on a toilet
had he been standing on it, he'd have been high on pot
I'm wondering whether whose idea it was
Also I think every documentary or feature, regardless of topic, should have an interview with Flea while he's sitting on a toilet.
Never been happier to have those bars tattooed on me.

today i visited the museum of modern art here in salzburg, they run a big Raymond Pettibon exhibition with his original artwork. His artwork is amazing and they displayed a lot of it. They have a big wall there which is only dedicated to the Black Flag Albums, Posters, Flyers .... :-) just epic
That's so sick
This is an awesome series, The Art of Punk. Things like this are what make RUclips worthwhile.
I don't think I've EVER seen Rollins and Morris ~together~ talking about Black Flag...
The album covers and black flag art , its so hypnotizing...
Were you on DMT when you seen them?
Soo Punk Rock.
My all-time favorite band right next to Circle Jerks.
This is possibly the single fucking best thing I've found on youtube to date.
Thank you !
6 Years Later... Did ya find anything better? If so please share. Thank you.
How many bands have come with their own totally unique brilliant art?
not many
Dead Kennedys
Other bands may have had their own little art but black flag’s was the best and heaviest.
Tons! Crass, Husker Du, Sebadoh, Stereolab, Hood, Fucked Up (as featured in the intro/outro music on this doc..)
Journey
Miles Davis. Kurt Cobain was an actual artist. From his video concepts to paintngs and sculpture.
John Lennon was one too.. Alot of those brits went to art school in the early 60's
After watching this again I just realized how many times Raymond Pettibone and Flea say"Like you know" a lot of freaking times to point where I just start cracking up as soon as they say it.
Thanks for your art Raymond! The art on the Black Flag fliers inspired me to draw as a kid, and the scathing commentary inspired me to think.
Well done.. Explained a lot of the dynamic that has always been somewhat of a mystery.
Watched this on another site somewhere. Couple years ago. Its a good film. I like the interviews. It sticks with the subject. Love the Rollins and Morris interviews. Keith Morris is a lovely human being. BLESS♥
This was amazing simply amazing
I just love how Flea is being interviewed on his toilet.
Just.......awesome.
Kieth Morris also GTA 5 DJ
Greatest punk rock band ever. They are why I picked up a guitar over 30 years ago and I still play.
Flea was right Black Flag was a dangerous band to see back in the day I can attest to that being a survivor of both the Damaged & My War tours.
Yes! The band's second single 'Antisocial'. Great stuff, I'm glad you pointed that out.
Simply amazing...what else can I say. I was so influenced by Black Flag and Pettibon's art, made me want to make punk rock flyers...which I did. Wearing a Black Flag shirt in in school would get you sent to the principal's office...Looking forward to the rest of the series!!
Thank you for making this film
Esse merece ir para os favoritos 😍
This is an amazing video I can't believe I just discovered it
that was amazing.
Henry:No more loyal a compadre to Greg.Chuck, Keith, Flea...many others as well.I love my brother more than anything.Luyv .It's not Greg's fault--it's brain chemistry--and love, love, love will be returned w/hate.His enablers, his sychophants,on the other hand...y'all get the treatment yrselves...soon.Thnx Henry,Chuck,Keith,Flea. And love to Greg, my bro.
Wow, this really is from Raymond. I'm almost speechless...Thanks for your magnificent art!
Hi, Raymond!
So many GREAT "RAY" quotes for me to use from this video!!!
This was hella great,thank you!

These Art of Punk episodes are great (if only they were a little longer),hoping they're not just leaving at three episodes,it'd be great to see more,The Misfits would be cool.
25th time watching, this is awesome, ill probably watch it again
Wooo I have about eight Black Flag shirts. Favourite band forever!
Nicely done. Cheers!
Good reason to go back, watch it at full screen, and pause along the way :-)
I heard the band before I saw the logo or even knew their name
but once I heard them in the middle of the night on Rodney on the Roc
I HAD to hear more
and was punk in an instant
Awesome!!
HOLY 'PUNK'S NOT DEAD' BATMAN'!MORE OF THESE PLEASE...AND THANKU 2 ALL OF THOSE WHO BROUGHT THE TRUTH W/ THIS PUNK ROCK DOC!

Greg would copyright it
The music's fucking sick tho

Seriously awesome video. Short, sweet and inspirational.
Henry Rollins is an incredible storyteller, great to have him on this.
this is an amazing 22 minutes.
Awesome!

So amazing
Pettibone invented memes long before the internet came round.
Found it in a book called Turtles All The Way Down by John Green. Such a masterpiece :)
i love chaos , i love black flag . they always understand my rage .
Everyone who went to Rick Spellman's shop got inked with the four bars.
rise above

Ray i ust want you to know that your six pack drawing is my favorite picture of all time.
Dukowski is sitting there listening to Keith and thinking that doesnt sound right but maybe i feel that way too
Nice putting "Son the Father" at the beginning
awesome. Art turns me onto sth
great video
God bless Flea.
I'm 56 and this is deep
Great
3:45 made my day
some people approach me and think my tattoo is an unimaginative cover-up, others (the cool ones), just nod or start telling me their favorite black flag story. Then there's the young who equate this with henry, and i have to educate them on the GOOD, the REAL, black flag.
I'm still a teenager and I've never met anyone of my peers who associate black flag with Henry.
Joseph rivas What's wrong about associating Black Flag with Henry Rollins?
Nothing I just have never heard about someone putting the two that close together in their minds.
The REAL Black Flag to me was Greg, Henry, Kira and Bill. I'm not young, I got to see them several times in the mid 80s. When Henry was on vocals, it took BF to a whole other original innovative sound. So your opinion is just that, just an opinion.
Ive run into the same prob
Ray got that Heavy Meds Glassy look.
On March 5, 1985, the Dickies were one of a number of California punk bands to play a very unexpected benefit show; other bands on the bill included the Circle Jerks, the Vandals, and D.I. The show's beneficiaries were the Cypress College Republicans.
Greg Ginn is one of the greatest punk/hardcore songwriters ever!
And he looks really healthy, is super friendly and when he plays it's almost hypnotizing. Yes, Black Flag is still together & playing/touring, saw em last year. Incredible.
@@crooked-halo Yeah he’s almost as good of a song writer as much as of a guitarist
Raymond Pettibon said he never went to art school but he has a BFA?
for some reason when I was younger I thought the logo tatted on henrys neck was a bar code.
in an old interview I think Keith once said they got the name from the bug spray
3:45 this clip is awesome XD
I was there. I have many of Ray's flyers. Originals from the early 80's that I collected and went to the gigs. I've seen every version/lineup of Black Flag, and had been supporting them until my war came out which I loved, then I step alway after that.i have the nude man flyer I this documentary, and one nude devil with the arrow headed penis lol!
Chuck is so baked.
9:26 Henry's impersonation of Raymond is spot on lmfao
take a shot every time someone says "you know?"
Hoo lee sheet
Viva La Raymond Pettibon
no they wouldnt no they wouldnt...many nwould come up with two bars. great logo, man!!!!
how is it greg ginn and his brother are responsible for one of the most powerful influential bands of the last half century and yet neither seem to be able to string together a coherent sentence....
Sometimes people are meant to communicate beyond words. Actions speak louder.
Geniuses are usually eccentrics.
People who are really deep artists have problems speaking with words. Their way is a canvas or whatever. Genius type people
Greg is a super-nice guy at shows, always hanging out before & after, surrounded with adoring fans wanting autographs & selfies, he looks really healthy & still shreds his guitar apart on stage. When he plays he looks almost possessed like he always has. I didn't want to play "Black Flag superfan" so I didn't talk to him but I hung out a few minutes nearby and, yeah, he has trouble with words like Ray and you can tell he's super-intelligent.
@@crooked-halo he’s a twat. he took all the royalties from the rest of the band.
I find it interesting that none of these black flag docs include interviews with Greg Ginn. I don’t know if that’s because he won’t do interviews (?), but Greg Ginn IS black flag. There is no black flag without GG!
I’m under the assumption he doesn’t wanna do any interviews with the other guys
Which is why I have absolutely ZERO issues with Black Flag still being a band and touring. After all, it is Greg Ginn's band. Frank Vallely (sp?) is pretty good on stage, too. Not great, but pretty damn good.
Crooked Halo mike valley and yeah the problem with new black flag is they’re too slow for black flag
Dank mans alley...because bands are not allowed to evolve and grow?
Mikael Lewis nah not that it’s their playing is slower that’s not an evolution or change
you should also make a video for Ray Ahn of Hard-Ons!
I wonder if Ray still gets a cut of Black Flag art that is used by Greg for BF.
Henry wearing a King Casio, now that's fucking punk!!!!!
Half of these bands , not all, wou;dn't even exist if it wasn't for Ray's artwork. Ray Pettibon is like the 5th beatle in many bands imo.
This is fucking amazing
I want that Rebirth Brass Band shirt Flea has.
