today i visited the museum of modern art here in salzburg, they run a big Raymond Pettibon exhibition with his original artwork. His artwork is amazing and they displayed a lot of it. They have a big wall there which is only dedicated to the Black Flag Albums, Posters, Flyers .... :-) just epic
Miles Davis. Kurt Cobain was an actual artist. From his video concepts to paintngs and sculpture. John Lennon was one too.. Alot of those brits went to art school in the early 60's
After watching this again I just realized how many times Raymond Pettibone and Flea say"Like you know" a lot of freaking times to point where I just start cracking up as soon as they say it.
These Art of Punk episodes are great (if only they were a little longer),hoping they're not just leaving at three episodes,it'd be great to see more,The Misfits would be cool.
Simply amazing...what else can I say. I was so influenced by Black Flag and Pettibon's art, made me want to make punk rock flyers...which I did. Wearing a Black Flag shirt in in school would get you sent to the principal's office...Looking forward to the rest of the series!!
Watched this on another site somewhere. Couple years ago. Its a good film. I like the interviews. It sticks with the subject. Love the Rollins and Morris interviews. Keith Morris is a lovely human being. BLESS♥
I heard the band before I saw the logo or even knew their name but once I heard them in the middle of the night on Rodney on the Roc I HAD to hear more and was punk in an instant
how is it greg ginn and his brother are responsible for one of the most powerful influential bands of the last half century and yet neither seem to be able to string together a coherent sentence....
Greg is a super-nice guy at shows, always hanging out before & after, surrounded with adoring fans wanting autographs & selfies, he looks really healthy & still shreds his guitar apart on stage. When he plays he looks almost possessed like he always has. I didn't want to play "Black Flag superfan" so I didn't talk to him but I hung out a few minutes nearby and, yeah, he has trouble with words like Ray and you can tell he's super-intelligent.
Henry:No more loyal a compadre to Greg.Chuck, Keith, Flea...many others as well.I love my brother more than anything.Luyv .It's not Greg's fault--it's brain chemistry--and love, love, love will be returned w/hate.His enablers, his sychophants,on the other hand...y'all get the treatment yrselves...soon.Thnx Henry,Chuck,Keith,Flea. And love to Greg, my bro.
On March 5, 1985, the Dickies were one of a number of California punk bands to play a very unexpected benefit show; other bands on the bill included the Circle Jerks, the Vandals, and D.I. The show's beneficiaries were the Cypress College Republicans.
I had two different Black Flag shirts torn off of me in fights. The Slip It In shirt and the Cop with a gun in his mouth. I was attacked by "decent" people for having such horrible crap on me in public. I was 15 and 17 at the time. That's the sign of great art, when someone will just start punching you for displaying it. I was pissed to lose the shirts both times, but I loved to fight bullies, so it evened out.
some people approach me and think my tattoo is an unimaginative cover-up, others (the cool ones), just nod or start telling me their favorite black flag story. Then there's the young who equate this with henry, and i have to educate them on the GOOD, the REAL, black flag.
The REAL Black Flag to me was Greg, Henry, Kira and Bill. I'm not young, I got to see them several times in the mid 80s. When Henry was on vocals, it took BF to a whole other original innovative sound. So your opinion is just that, just an opinion.
I find it interesting that none of these black flag docs include interviews with Greg Ginn. I don’t know if that’s because he won’t do interviews (?), but Greg Ginn IS black flag. There is no black flag without GG!
Which is why I have absolutely ZERO issues with Black Flag still being a band and touring. After all, it is Greg Ginn's band. Frank Vallely (sp?) is pretty good on stage, too. Not great, but pretty damn good.
I was there. I have many of Ray's flyers. Originals from the early 80's that I collected and went to the gigs. I've seen every version/lineup of Black Flag, and had been supporting them until my war came out which I loved, then I step alway after that.i have the nude man flyer I this documentary, and one nude devil with the arrow headed penis lol!
I think the funniest part of the whole doc was when Henry was describing getting a tattoo and how he was too polite to correct the guy. Pretty much the opposite of what I expected!
Raw Nerve - Hemlock no longer active, but they’re so fuckin’ good band, I think I heard another tune in the background which called ‘dating problems’ the bass player of raw nerve runs a small record label - Not Normal Tapes’ you can find some really cool stuff there :)
@@jameshampton3102 OK, so I'm surely wrong. I remember Rollins telling the story of how he was on his way to or from work when Ian asked him to jump up on stage and sing, or to try out. my name is raymond pettibon and i designed this muthafucking thang
timeless
I laughed when I saw flea sitting on a toilet
had he been standing on it, he'd have been high on pot
I'm wondering whether whose idea it was
Also I think every documentary or feature, regardless of topic, should have an interview with Flea while he's sitting on a toilet.
Never been happier to have those bars tattooed on me.
Poser
I got the bars painted on my dirt bike on my skateboard on my truck

That's so sick
This is an awesome series, The Art of Punk. Things like this are what make RUclips worthwhile.
The album covers and black flag art , its so hypnotizing...
Were you on DMT when you seen them?
I don't think I've EVER seen Rollins and Morris ~together~ talking about Black Flag...
Soo Punk Rock.
My all-time favorite band right next to Circle Jerks.
How many bands have come with their own totally unique brilliant art?
not many
Dead Kennedys
Other bands may have had their own little art but black flag’s was the best and heaviest.
Tons! Crass, Husker Du, Sebadoh, Stereolab, Hood, Fucked Up (as featured in the intro/outro music on this doc..)
Journey
Miles Davis. Kurt Cobain was an actual artist. From his video concepts to paintngs and sculpture.
John Lennon was one too.. Alot of those brits went to art school in the early 60's
Greatest punk rock band ever. They are why I picked up a guitar over 30 years ago and I still play.
Thanks for your art Raymond! The art on the Black Flag fliers inspired me to draw as a kid, and the scathing commentary inspired me to think.
This is possibly the single fucking best thing I've found on youtube to date.
Thank you !
6 Years Later... Did ya find anything better? If so please share. Thank you.
pity that you couldn't use black flag music for this program.
Greg would copyright it
The music's fucking sick tho
Quick someone edit real bf tunes over the shit ones

that was amazing.
Well done.. Explained a lot of the dynamic that has always been somewhat of a mystery.
Thank you for making this film

Kieth Morris also GTA 5 DJ
Just.......awesome.
Flea was right Black Flag was a dangerous band to see back in the day I can attest to that being a survivor of both the Damaged & My War tours.
Proudaya

Yes! The band's second single 'Antisocial'. Great stuff, I'm glad you pointed that out.
This was hella great,thank you!
I just love how Flea is being interviewed on his toilet.
Barred for life and damn proud!
This is an amazing video I can't believe I just discovered it
i love chaos , i love black flag . they always understand my rage .
More episodes please!!!!💯🤙😎
this is an amazing 22 minutes.

Sometimes people are meant to communicate beyond words. Actions speak louder.
Geniuses are usually eccentrics.
People who are really deep artists have problems speaking with words. Their way is a canvas or whatever. Genius type people

Hi, Raymond!
On March 5, 1985, the Dickies were one of a number of California punk bands to play a very unexpected benefit show; other bands on the bill included the Circle Jerks, the Vandals, and D.I. The show's beneficiaries were the Cypress College Republicans.
Seriously awesome video. Short, sweet and inspirational.
Henry Rollins is an incredible storyteller, great to have him on this.
kind of funny i don't really like flag's music but i like the feeling and excitement associated with the band
It's black flag, flag is a different band with former members
OrganizedMessOffical sorry i did mean black flag i was just speaking aphoristically.
Did have a dream where I joined black flag.
I think the reason I enjoy the music is because of the energy
Yeah, a lot of punk and hardcore sounds just awful by itself, but going to a show just for the pit is always worth it
So many GREAT "RAY" quotes for me to use from this video!!!
Henry wearing a King Casio, now that's fucking punk!!!!!
HOLY 'PUNK'S NOT DEAD' BATMAN'!MORE OF THESE PLEASE...AND THANKU 2 ALL OF THOSE WHO BROUGHT THE TRUTH W/ THIS PUNK ROCK DOC!
cool, Raw Nerve as backround music
Wooo I have about eight Black Flag shirts. Favourite band forever!
Good reason to go back, watch it at full screen, and pause along the way :-)
Nicely done. Cheers!
Ray i ust want you to know that your six pack drawing is my favorite picture of all time.

Iconic stuff......ty
Pettibone invented memes long before the internet came round.
9:26 Henry's impersonation of Raymond is spot on lmfao
wow.. awesome.. newly uploaded!
Dukowski is sitting there listening to Keith and thinking that doesnt sound right but maybe i feel that way too
Everyone who went to Rick Spellman's shop got inked with the four bars.
!wow! very cool!
Found it in a book called Turtles All The Way Down by John Green. Such a masterpiece :)
Awesome!!
So amazing

I'm still a teenager and I've never met anyone of my peers who associate black flag with Henry.
Joseph rivas What's wrong about associating Black Flag with Henry Rollins?
Nothing I just have never heard about someone putting the two that close together in their minds.
The REAL Black Flag to me was Greg, Henry, Kira and Bill. I'm not young, I got to see them several times in the mid 80s. When Henry was on vocals, it took BF to a whole other original innovative sound. So your opinion is just that, just an opinion.
Ive run into the same prob
25th time watching, this is awesome, ill probably watch it again
very nice man, awesome!!!
I'm 56 and this is deep
Raymond Pettibon said he never went to art school but he has a BFA?
take a shot every time someone says "you know?"
Hoo lee sheet
going to see Black Flag tonight in the vancouver!!!
for some reason when I was younger I thought the logo tatted on henrys neck was a bar code.

Crooked Halo mike valley and yeah the problem with new black flag is they’re too slow for black flag
Dank mans alley...because bands are not allowed to evolve and grow?
Mikael Lewis nah not that it’s their playing is slower that’s not an evolution or change
Nice putting "Son the Father" at the beginning
Flea: "Let's do this interview in my bathroom, sitting on my toilet!"
Ray got that Heavy Meds Glassy look.

great video
So Henry was friends with Ian from Minor Threat?
The more you know. :)
James Hampton they were close friends as teenagers.
Henry's from D.C. just like Ian, he was in S.O.A.
It was Ian who encouraged/pushed Rollins to "try out" for vocalist of Black Flag. The BF song "Clocked in" came from that.

God bless Flea.
He's on about Greg, because one of the guys asked where he was in this. Henry seems like a nice enough dude though, especially by comparison.
I’m trying to find that flyer that’s behind Chuck and Keith that looks like Michael Myers from Halloween......I just want a good look at it!🤔
