  • Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Raymond Pettibon, from the "Humor" episode in Season 2 of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"Humor" premiered in October 2003 on PBS.
Raymond Pettibon’s drawings and paintings pair text and image in provocative and sometimes disconcerting ways, creating a powerful comic art for adults. The characters of Gumby and Vavoom are recurring motifs in his work, but so are American presidents like Nixon and Reagan. Pettibon finds subjects for satire and social commentary in a broad range of images from popular culture.
Raymond Pettibon was born in Tucson, Arizona, in 1957. Learn more about the artist at: art21.org/arti...

I was a 12 year old kid when I first discovered his work on a Black Flag record. Changed my perspective for sure.

I don't mean to be insensitive, but has Raymond had a stroke or some other medical mishap since the filming of this video? He seems far more withdrawn, to the point of catatonia, in every over video I have seen of him - it surprised me to see him so comparatively animated here.

As an artist, I totally get it. And yet, as an artist, I don’t get it at all.
