  • Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Chris Ware, from the "Chicago" episode in the ninth season of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"Chicago " premiered in September 2016 on PBS. Watch now on PBS and the PBS Video app: www.pbs.org/vi...
Chris Ware, known for his New Yorker magazine covers, is hailed as a master of the comic art form. Ware’s complex graphic novels, which tell stories about people in suburban midwestern neighborhoods, poignantly reflect on the role of memory in constructing identity. Stories featuring many of Ware’s protagonists-Quimby the Mouse, Rusty Brown, and Jimmy Corrigan-often first appear in serialized form, in publications such as “The New York Times,” the “Guardian,” or Ware’s own ongoing comic book series “Acme Novelty Library,” before being organized into their own stand-alone books.

A strange calm came over me watching this video, I unintentionally became a fan of Chris's work some years ago and have collected ever since. His work gives me hope for books, comics and story telling, may they go on forever.

I wish he would know that I haven’t indeed taken 3-4 hours to read rusty brown, I stare at each page for hours because they’re works of art themselves, and haven’t finished it in a year of owning it because I want to the best I can

I remember Chris Ware when I was in undergraduate school. I remember him selling an extraordinary box art comic piece made of wood, he sold for a mere $1000. I wish I had the means to buy it, it was really a great piece.

8:20 ... when I was a kid in the '60's the Sunday comics were a treasure trove of stories!! STORIES!! I couldn't wait from week to week to see what was going to happen in Gas Alley, Steve Canyon (I had a crush on Poteet Canyon!), Dick Tracy (the best story arcs involved Moon Maid, Magnetic Space Coupe, murders on the Moon etc!!), Apt 3G, Mary Worth, etc. Even years later before Lynn Johnsonn was wrapping up For Better Or Worse it was interesting to read about the kids growing into adults. Today the Sunday comics are largely abysmal, recycled jokes... Garfield should have been killed with an ice pick to the head decades ago (R Crumb fans will get the reference) and the hack that does Close To Home should never have been allowed near pen and paper (anybody who saw the genius of The Far Side and said "hey, that looks easy, I could do that!" should be slapped upside the head and told, "No! It's not and you can't!")...
I love his work and respect his perseverance in doing it amidst the doubt and worry, but I find it hard to read, visually hard to read! The panels are sometimes so small and dense I need a magnifying glass to get through it... bittersweet, I love it and I hate it it!!

I just finished Rusty Brown. I enjoyed every single page of it. It was very nice to see those pages when they were just blue pencil, and how they transformed into the actual page. I'm so grateful that we have artist like Chris Ware who provide this nourishment to our souls. Chapeau Maestro!

This needs to be viewed by more people. I've known of Ware's work back when he was doing comics in The Chicago Reader. Amazing draftsman and storyteller. I lived in Chicago my entire life, then spent a few years in Oak Park before relocating to Minneapolis 4 years ago. I love the lack of sprawl and congestion in Minneapolis and really embrace that nature is close by, this video made me miss Chicago.
