Glad you mentioned the Spartan. It really looks like a beauty dish and a deep octa all in one plus it has the grid. It looks great for a mobile set up especially since I shoot allot of fashion on busy city streets.
Personally, I liked the diagrams you two used to illustrate positioning for lights, reflectors and subject. Interspersing the whole presentation with sample shots was perfect for me. Seeing this basic information, I enjoy working through a shoot to duplicate the essential characteristics your work in this video. Thank you.
My early one light setup was using a Nikon speedlight on the camera than I moved onto having a Lumiquest Big Bounce for the speedlight to soften the shadows when it comes to portraiture. I had someone influence me through RUclips to get a speedlight bracket and a Nikon speedlight TTL cable so I can shoot my Nikon speedlight off the camera. I tried some portraiture and macro flower photography. It really worked. Now I have applied that same speedlight setup with the bracket minus the Lumiquest with a reflector and tungsten speedlight gel to do a family portraiture and it worked. Even though there are some catchlights on the glasses but I can still see the eyes. The family appreciates the photo shoot. My next portrait shots would be to try very soon is with a Paul C. Buff light stand and a Photoflex 45 inch comfortable umbrella with the Nikon SB-800 speedlight attached. Peace!
My 1 light is simple for beauty....I source in a large soft box directly behind....firing into 3 silver reflectors...the wrap adding a rim, and the reflectors bouncing back a soft light for beauty shots
Personally I like the content both you guys bring out keep it up . As for my favourite one light set up , it's the 7ft parabolic umbrella with deffuser and large silver reflector. I have the umbrellla behind me and use the reflector to shape the light.
my favorite one like setup is a Baja B4 light source with a SMDV Alpha Speedbox-A90B or if i want to travel light i just use a speedlight with the same deep ooctabox. its big but super lightweight for me getting around NYC to shoot on locations.
Hey @Jeff Rojas how are you? Do you use the Phottix Hexa Para 150? i just got it a day ago & I'm not able to set it up. There is no video or anything that shows how to set-up the Para150. Please can you or @Miguel Quiles make a short video on how to set it on for Indra500? Thanks a lot in advance.

funny you say that, I recently did a shoot outdoors and used two light sources and my assistant didn't agree. I back lit my subject with the sun (light source 1) and used my B2 as my key light (light source 2)
For someone that shoots on the go who just bought his first speedlight shooting one person portraits, what should be the first modifier that I should get?
First get a reflector, and then get a octobox. Octobox is the best to start with since it gives a circular catchlight in the models eye which is generally the most preferred look.
If I may.... when using speedlights you must keep in mind that the power output is a lot less than with studio strobes. This means that you may have to really change your camera settings to achieve the same results. This also means that at times you will have to shoot at higher ISO than when using studio strobes. But for most (not all) situations, the process is the same, or pretty similar. The majority of lighting techniques shown using studio strobes can be duplicated using speedlights when you adjust for the lower power output of the speedlights. Many top end photographers use speedlights almost exclusively because of their portability. This does not mean they are "better" but that each have their place and can achieve very similar, if not identical results. Kind of like how a 100hp car and a 500hp car can both drive you to the store and travel at highway speeds. But the 500hp car WILL go faster, and achieve that speed much quicker. Studio Strobes vs Speedlights.
I previously had a debate as I regard "One Light Setups" as the one light you add, as I used the sun as a rim light and then I was told this is two lights. Your thoughts?
A source of light isn't the same thing as a producer, at night is the moon a source of light, yes, does it produce light, no, it reflects the sun's light. That is my conclusion on this, you can argue the itty gritty if you like but it doesn't really achieve anything.
Light source: n, Anything that cast illumination and cast a shadow. Reflectors are light sources if they cast illumination and shadows. The moon is a reflector (i.e. moonlight and moonshadows). It does not "generate light" but it is a light source when it reflects light (i.e. full moon).
Re: reflectors. If someone is trying to argue that a reflector is a light source, suggest they try lighting a portrait in a studio with no lights, only reflectors. See how much good that does them!

Also, BTW, I had a little argument just the other day with a friend who thought reflectors should be considered to be light sources...I loved your back-and-forth here, because it's basically what my experience was. Absolutely! Those tutorials are available in the lighting setups section on my RUclips channel. Since these videos are intended to be relatively short, it's important to separate them. :)
Jeff, I admire you as a accomplished photographer and hope to be at your level of skill and confidence one day. Thou I do not think you understood my comment. If you are in a stable, controlled, fixed location, using a stand or two with reflector holders would not be an issue. But a photographer shooting outside with wind, people and unknown elements around them. As well as having to move from one location to another or from one spot to another spot. A lone photographer cannot manage multiple stands, reflectors, a light with modifier and camera all at the same time without help. Well, they can carry all that gear, but its a pain to do so. Imagine you finish one shot and then you need to move everything to a different location that is about 30 feet away and then after that shot is captured move to another location. That is why I commented that people need to say one modifier setup instead of one light. Hey thanks for responding, even thou it sounds like a smart butt comment. Its all good. I know it takes time and its appreciated.
Im' new to photography dealing with ocf but I've been doing a lot of portrait, weddings, events etc so I wanted to explore this. Jeff you made me buy this 2 days ago man. I picked up the Godox 47in P120L parabolic soft box and looking forward to exploring Rembrandt lighting from your vid with the guy model with no shirt. Including companies that we work with is a way for us to discuss real world situations. It is not a belief, just an observation. I liked you because you were doing male photography only (at least that's what you promoted) using basic equipment. Now that you are so much more famous, you do what everyone else is doing: female photography using lots of different and promotional equipment. It's more appealing to the masses I suppose. I am just disappointed. But the video sounds a little bit like you are both promoting yourselves. It's not MY thing I should say. It obviously appeals to many more people.

I'm always evolving my name and brand, but at the core essence, you hit the mark that I wanted... which is simplicity. If there's anything that I want you to take away, that's a simple approach to photography, business and marketing. I want everyone to succeed at what they do, and I also want to embody that mindset. Basically, I'm doing my best to show everyone that ANYTHING is possible if you're willing to work for it.
sorry but I think a reflector is a created light source. it obeys the inverse square law, it is a substitute for a powered or natural light source it might not even be getting it's light from the strobe. also, if you are mixing ambient light with a single strobe, is that one light source? by your definition that the ambient light isn't paid for so it can't be counted, lol
I'm a location shooter, don't do one light, sun is always out, and I hate reflectors especially when working alone, light stands are so much easier outside.
jl sc I’d also like to note. There’s a difference between a light SOURCE and one that reflects light. A SOURCE would infer “a place, person, or thing from which something comes or can be obtained.” You can not obtain light from a reflector without a light SOURCE, therefore it’s a modifier of light. So even if you’re shooting with the sun... you’re still shooting win ONE LIGHT SOURCE.

I was just upset that it took you half your video to explain it when one sentence was sufficient. As were many apparently. Everyone has an opinion on what constitutes a light source, I consider walls, ceilings, clothing, anything that is going to reflect light on my subject as a light source. hi jeff...is there a problem with using a 47'' parabox in a small room used as my studio? the room i want to change into a studio is only 9'x12' room.
