- The former Post Office chief Paula Vennells gave a tearful reply to a question from Sam Stein KC on her final day of testimony, saying: 'I loved the Post Office. I gave it ... I worked as hard as I possibly could to deliver the best Post Office for the UK.' Stein responded at the end of her answer: 'That’s absolute rubbish'

Love of money governs her life.
@@barrymcmanmon9595, she loved the post office, it gave her a great income!
Could you please explain how these emails were recovered and why some emails were not recovered ? is there a law in the UK that requires archiving all communications of state-owned organisations ?
There is no amount of humiliation she can experience that would compare to what the victims of this scandal have gone through.
Exactly.
Absolutely
Trust me jail isn't a holiday in Disneyland, being in a room with 2 people and 1 toilet really hits the mark.😂
@@techtinkerin I really don't think she's concerned about Jail. She knows if you're rich enough you don't go to jail. I pray I'm wrong though.
get her to live every jail time given and they we ask her.
Crocodile tears...again. she should get a oscar for this performance.
Totally agree, but even if they're not crocodile tears, they would be tears at her horror of getting herself in this position and how she should have lied and cheated more to avoid it......
@@stevenorthwick2480they are not tears of horror. Just pure manipulation.
She showed no mercy.
@@stevenorthwick2480 Yeah it's like when you are a child and get caught doing something you know you shouldn't have been doing or when you didn't prepare for school or something. Crying out of stress & fear of a situation entirely of your own making.
An Oscar is for talented actors Paula Vennells crocodile tears aren't falling anyone give her a Razzie for worst actress
@@Plethorality I couldn't help but think of Kyle Rottenhouse at his trial.
The "BEST outcome ever" would be if Martin Griffiths was still alive (NOT MURDERED by the Post Office).
The "BEST outcome ever" is Alan Bates still having his lovely post office/store and going about his very decent life, enjoying his family and friends without ever being FALSELY ACCUSED of stealing money.
The "BEST outcome ever" is Jo Hamilton NEVER being FALSELY accused of stealing £36,000 from the Post Office branch she ran in South Warnborough, Hampshire.
The "BEST outcome" here is Paula Vennells PAYING BACK ALL HER Post Office earnings, LOSING her home, having to file for bankruptcy, serving jail time, and penning an honest account of her failings and what she knew.
Totally agree
And that’s just a start.
Facts........let us all pray 🙏😁
Yes, I agree!
Yes ! Extraordinary HER best outcome does not mention ONE prosecuted person. Unbelievable her head won’t go there.
She doesn’t give a toss. The ‘tears’ are enough to make a crocodile look embarrassed. According to reports, Vennells made up to £5million from her role during the Horizon IT system scandal, which destroyed many lives. It is also reported she made around £2.93million in performance-related perks and payments in lieu of a pension. It’s, frankly, outrageous she gets away with this stuff, given what went on on her watch.
I loved the post-office and the large salary i was on........Ive just covered my own back
Amd all the backhanders that accompanied it.
I’m crying because I’ve been caught
@@stevenclarke5606 100% Steve, now she must pay back 3million Bonus.....
"Absolute rubbish" is a lawyer's polite way of saying "absolute lies".
She's an intelligent woman..speaks 4 languages.....she knew the score...she was aware of what was going on....but lacked the moral fibre to do anything about it....and here still refusing to accept any culpability....shameful...let's hope this isn't the end of it and she receives due punishment.
How does tie in with her being an Anglican vicar and indeed a possible bishop of London?
As a vicar, she ought to have known the Ninth Commandment, thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbour, which clearly includes by omission.
If she was in the USA she would be locked up.
Nothing wrong with her memory
@@daveyjones2215 "I don't recall"...yep that'll work..that's ok then
Send her to jail so she can feel what the postmaster felt, disgraceful
She loves the post office, they give me lots of money, for being incompetent.!!!!
Totally agree
From what's come out in the inquiry there was a lot of incompetent people in high positions
Glad they are putting her through the wringer. She is not thinking about her victims
I’ve been delighted with the questioning, he’s calling her out on every bit of bs she tries. 🍿
What a foul excuse of a human being.
she is just making speeches..not answers
I love the post office, (in reality, I love my perks, pay & power and will do anything to protect my job & prospects). The postmasters & others can fall by the wayside.
Awful woman.
Wish they didn't cut away from her face just when he called it absolute rubbish.
Every time she is cornered by a question the tears start, must think people are daft.
As a vicar, she ought to have known the Ninth Commandment, thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbour, which clearly includes by omission.
That whole 750+ page statement...I'd suggest that was bearing false witness
Shes pushing those tears out
Temper tantrums
On the media they suggested there was onion in the tissues ..quite an extraordinary statement
"should have had better governance in place..." You're telling me mate!!! You should've been nowhere near the PO!!!
If she doesnt go to Prison, it shows just how corrupt this Country is.
Gaslighting all the way backed up with crocodile tears- all she cared about was the Post Office
She really deserves a lengthy jail sentence for what she has done. I do not believe for a second her claims of ignorance. If she did not know what was going on, then she was grossly incompetent. But very obviously, she knew exactly what was going on.
She should return her bonuses 🤬
@@traceycraig3808 And her salary as well I reckon
She needs to be charged with perjury
She's lying she knew
She's only sorry for herself that she got found out, and she couldn't even tell the truth, for all the people that got sent to jail and she still steamrollered on with this failed system, and the 1 person that took his own life because of her cover up her lies. She's got away with it and won't even serve a jail sentence. There's no justice in this country,
When pressed she says she loved the post office, and how hard she worked- what about those lives she destroyed. The comment she made on having better Governance is Gaslighting again
So glad her lies are being called out in real time by the very decent Sam Stein KC.
Jail her and her counterparts
People can't believe what she did. She knew this was happening. But just because is wasn't HER it was happening to, she got high & wealthy off of their suffering. And now that she has been caught.. now she cries.. for herself. Nothing but a psychopath.
My sentiments exactly. What is even more disturbing is that she went to hide behind the church with that white collar around her neck. If that isn't blasphemous, I don't know what is.
Notice how she looked and thought about how to react, so started crying (the cry that actors do - a smile almost and bunch your eyes) her tears and upset vanish towards the end of her statement and then completely once he calls it rubbish. She is a psychopath, or very close to. Hoping to win us all over with "vulnerability".
Get her in jail, where she so gladly put her honest, hardworking employees for so much less
I want to know who is going to pay the very deserved compensation to the unfortunate Postmasters. Surely not us, the British tax payer? We should not be laying out a single penny!
Her only defence is her own incompetence and that is not a defence in law.
She was highly paid to be a competent leader.
She loved the Post Office and didn't care about the innocent Postmasters. Shame on you. Hope she goes to jail with her box of tissues.
More management jargon. More waffle. More bs bingo. The top of so many private and public organisation are full of these melts.
If anyone wasn't angry before, they will be now
She is not alone in the corporate world.
“At no time did I put the PO over the cases that were brought forward “……what a liar
Cant watch anymore makes me sick
What power does this hearing have? Can they give her a prison sentence?
As a minimum, she should:
1) be fined the total value of the 'stolen' PO money - which needs to be given to those post masters - with lost interest.
2) pay for all the legal fees.
3) serve a prison sentence, and therefore get a criminal record, and hopefully never be able to get paid employment.
4) return all the salary she received whilst in this position.
This might:
- make her bankrupt
- lose her house
- lose her friends
- lose respect from colleagues
- cause her a great amount of shame.
Then, and only then, can she consider herself to be in a position to understand what she put hundreds of people through for over a decade.
Once this is over, the police can use all findings as evidence for any enquiries they might chose.
Also it will provide evidence for any civil cases that might be raised.
What is totally mystifying is why anyone thought hundreds and hundreds of post masters had apparently pinched so much money. A couple maybe but hundreds ?
She wasn't crying for the people she ruined.
Vennells gives a masterclass in 'The Way of the Weasel' ... the 'spontaneous' on command tears are a nice touch. It's a cruel world.
should be rotting in jail !! 😡
you trying to pull the wool over every one eyes whith tears of guilt
Lock her up
Crocodile tears!!!. As a CEO she 'knew nothing' in that case she should have been sacked for incompetence!!!.
If you're happy to take the position, status and salary of Post Office CEO, then you need to understand the position you will rightly find yourself in should the effluent hit the fan. Quite simply she is either grossly incompetent or outright dishonest. Private Eye has been banging on about this scandal for well over a decade so there is zero excuse for her claiming to have no knowledge of the situation. Even if she wasn't solely responsible for this outrage, looking into the allegations and acting correctly should have been her number one priority, but it seems that protecting her own status was a greater priority. The Church of England needs to undergo a period of deep self-reflection to understand why they let someone as vile/incompetent as this act as their representative.
What a thoroughly unpleasant woman this is, ruining hundreds of lives and not giving a toss as long as she can collect her bonus!
I loved the p.o.
Which part.. the buildings... the little red van? Obviously not the people ...who ARE the P.O.
No! She is confusing Postman Pat with the Post Office
" I loved the post office" so much that to protect it's reputation, sending a few innocent people to jail and the odd suicide was worth the sacrifices of the sub postmasters.
She does not care about anyone but herself. Horrible person. Jo Hamilton said Paula Vennells would either admit everything or double down and say she was not aware what was going on. She was spot on . They all need to go to prison they committed a crime by lying whilst under oath . Innocent people went to prison and some took their own lives and were hounded their own community paid monies back which they did not owe . Prison is the only outcome and financial pay outs from Vennells and her lying buddies bonuses and pensions.
Send her to jail and then we will see some real tears.
Feeling physically sick , if she had cried in the boardroom she would be gone absolute rubbish
Crying for the poor victims.....
Or crying at the prospect of jail....
😮
They should all face charges
Absolute dog 💩...
Get her in prison. Those crocodile tears are doing nothing for me.
Prison!!!
Was she promted to weep?? Listen and watch that again 😕
Someone in the gallery insulted her.
@@meganm1074 I didn't notice that but watching it back, you're right.
Unfortunately I don't see any of these people in prison. It happened too long ago and they will have better lawyers
I don’t care wether she knew or not (she did). But, as captain of the ship, she has to take responsibility for steering it. She should now go down with that ship along with her co conspirators.
Imagine, at your place of work, some money goes missing. You get blamed. If you deny it you are threatened with court resulting in prison. Or if you admit it you just get a suspended sentence or community punishment. So to avoid prison you admit guilt. Over and done with you think. Then your company sues you for court costs because you were found guilty, you owe £350,000 in court costs. Your life ruined. This company is called the Post Office. Their logo is " whatever you need us for, we're here for you". They spent £100 million in expensive lawers to try to avoid paying £58 million in compensation. The class action saw the incorrectly convicted see £20,000 in compensation after court costs. The executive salaries were between £250,000 and £500,000. Post Office investigators were given bonuses for every Horizon conviction
How many loyal and dedicated postmasters lives were ruined by the actions of the Post Office and the person in charge
And the Oscar for 'feeling sorry for myself' goes too...
That face? Those tears!? Did her dog step on a bee? 😂
Love the post and f.. the poor subpost masters, hope she goes to jail
Jail. For either incompetence or lying.
Her and the other senior managers who conspired in this tragic miscarriage of justice should be jailed.
Put her in jail. Its the only justice
How does one get a job like that?
She "loved (how much money she made from) the post office" is what she means. Retribution!!!!
Dancing on a pinhead. The line of questions would not be the same in a court of law. In this enquiry, they are asked a direct question and are allowed to go on a merry dance surrounding the answer with pre-prepared monologues in order to obsfucate the question itself. That would not be allowed in court. That is why this will not be a substitute"justice" but possibly a path for the victims.
And this embarrassment to decency was nearly made a Bishop in the Church of England !
So The Church of England isn't an "embarrassment to decency" then?
she'd have fitted in well with the other liars.
The CoE is just another depraved and corrupt institution.
She has a lot of atonement to do
'I dont recall' is the biggest cop-out excuse I've ever heard. She obviously went to The Amber Heard School of Acting too! Imagine if she were answering questions about her missing a million pounds, she'd sharp get her 'memory' back then. She makes me sick to my stomach. Her lies, cover up's ... they're not going to take away the agonising pain that so many innocent people were put through. And they're not going to bring back people who were SO stressed about what was happening that the only thing they could do was take their own lives. Its despicable & I hope her & any others who knew & and chose to ignore what was happening pay the FULL price of the law!!!
She's lying. Very selective memory loss. Where did the money go that was "stolen" from the Post Office.
The cruelty of these people is astonishing.. Where did the money go. Mmmm. Where..
Whenever we see pretty much any CEO in front of an Inquiry, invariably they know nothing; lack technical expertise or suffer from amnesia. It begs the question why these corporate super heroes earn vast amounts of money and are given extra-ordinary panegyrics - they seem so decidedly ordinary as they mumble excuses and apologies.
And they still tout life insurance and the post office credit card?????????????
A crocodile called Paula😂😂😂😂
Prison.
Didn't love the post office she loved the bonuses and pension
'We were desperately trying to brush it under the carpet because we knew we were in big trouble if we couldn't'. These were the words she was grasping for.
She would do well in the tory party as theyre great liars
Crying for herself. The question is what will the consequences be of her reprehensible actions? Look at the misery and suffering that she caused. Then just deny all knowledge of anything. She knew what was going on ages ago and chose to double down, cover it up and saw people’s lives ruined with no problem to her. She is a liar. The only thing she is sorry about is that it was all uncovered and she was caught out.
Send her to jail
She needs go to jail. If we do not do this we have boards all over the country who will not see an example for cover up or laziness and not looking after their workers.
I’m an IT consultant. I knew at the time of the original prosecutions that it was the software. I’ve seen it myself on projects, on multiple occasions. That’s completely normal, which is why I couldn’t understand how they were managing to prosecute obviously innocent people.
Her own chairman thought she wasn't up to the job. Tears for being found out. Her church will say that sinners have to be forgiven and allow her to continue preaching about honesty & integrity.
Nice that after several hours of being asked difficult questions by Jason Beer in his mainly relaxed style, she then gets to be questioned by this barrister who mainly works in criminal defence and has a much more robust style. I don’t think Venells “I wasn’t there” excuses have fooled anyone. She is being asked questions by members of parliament and can’t ask her staff hard questions. She didn’t ask because she knew the answers weren’t going to be the ones she wanted.
She needs to be prosecuted and she needs to go to prison.
Nothing will come of it -
Lives ruined by her malpractice (or if you believe her story, glaring oversights), can't be given back. I'm sure she will escape any kind of meaningful justice, because she's rich and thats always the way! True justice would have her locked up, stripped of the wealth she generated from the role at the post office and never be given a position of power ever again. The church would do well to disassociate itself from her as well!
We've been watching this inquiry and after 3 days of watching PV's lies and putting blame on others, it becomes evident she is devoid of human feelings and compassion. Despicable creature this.
At no time did I allow myself to think outside my corporate bubble.
She worked as hard as she could to make sure she and the other cronies could walk away with mega bonuses.
She remembered going from having 3 Rolls Royces to 1 to bring the tears out.
She seems to be entirely passive. She was the CEO. If the operational side was not getting enough attention, she should have appointed a COO.
She acted more like a priest than a CEO. Her job wasn't just to trust people.
No, the passivity is being projected now because she’s trying to avoid criminal prosecution.
it's an act, don't be gullible.
Bravo!! what a performance worthy of an oscar, when a prison sentence hangs over you.
More Post Offices in more communities so they could falsely accuse even more sub- postmasters of theft or false accounting.
She treats the post office as if it's a living being. Better than a living being it seems. How unfortunate for living beings coming across this woman's path.
The failure of our politicians, police, regulators, to investigate something that has been apparent through the media for many years is the true story. Only too often these failures are brushed aside - Hillsborough is another major catastrophe that took years and years to eventually surface. This inquiry should also about all those in authority outside the Post Office.
