  • The former Post Office chief Paula Vennells gave a tearful reply to a question from Sam Stein KC on her final day of testimony, saying: 'I loved the Post Office. I gave it ... I worked as hard as I possibly could to deliver the best Post Office for the UK.' Stein responded at the end of her answer: 'That’s absolute rubbish'

The "BEST outcome ever" would be if Martin Griffiths was still alive (NOT MURDERED by the Post Office).
The "BEST outcome ever" is Alan Bates still having his lovely post office/store and going about his very decent life, enjoying his family and friends without ever being FALSELY ACCUSED of stealing money.
The "BEST outcome ever" is Jo Hamilton NEVER being FALSELY accused of stealing £36,000 from the Post Office branch she ran in South Warnborough, Hampshire.
The "BEST outcome" here is Paula Vennells PAYING BACK ALL HER Post Office earnings, LOSING her home, having to file for bankruptcy, serving jail time, and penning an honest account of her failings and what she knew.

According to reports, Vennells made up to £5million from her role during the Horizon IT system scandal, which destroyed many lives. It is also reported she made around £2.93million in performance-related perks and payments in lieu of a pension. What power does this hearing have? Can they give her a prison sentence?
    As a minimum, she should:
    1) be fined the total value of the 'stolen' PO money - which needs to be given to those post masters - with lost interest.
    2) pay for all the legal fees.
    3) serve a prison sentence, and therefore get a criminal record, and hopefully never be able to get paid employment.
    4) return all the salary she received whilst in this position.
    This might:
    - make her bankrupt
    - lose her house
    - lose her friends
    - lose respect from colleagues
    - cause her a great amount of shame.
Then, and only then, can she consider herself to be in a position to understand what she put hundreds of people through for over a decade.

If you're happy to take the position, status and salary of Post Office CEO, then you need to understand the position you will rightly find yourself in should the effluent hit the fan. Quite simply she is either grossly incompetent or outright dishonest. Private Eye has been banging on about this scandal for well over a decade so there is zero excuse for her claiming to have no knowledge of the situation. Even if she wasn't solely responsible for this outrage, looking into the allegations and acting correctly should have been her number one priority, but it seems that protecting her own status was a greater priority. The Church of England needs to undergo a period of deep self-reflection to understand why they let someone as vile/incompetent as this act as their representative.

Then your company sues you for court costs because you were found guilty, you owe £350,000 in court costs. Your life ruined. This company is called the Post Office. Their logo is " whatever you need us for, we're here for you". They spent £100 million in expensive lawers to try to avoid paying £58 million in compensation. And they're not going to bring back people who were SO stressed about what was happening that the only thing they could do was take their own lives. Its despicable & I hope her & any others who knew & and chose to ignore what was happening pay the FULL price of the law!!!

Whenever we see pretty much any CEO in front of an Inquiry, invariably they know nothing; lack technical expertise or suffer from amnesia. It begs the question why these corporate super heroes earn vast amounts of money and are given extra-ordinary panegyrics - they seem so decidedly ordinary as they mumble excuses and apologies.

Crying for herself. The question is what will the consequences be of her reprehensible actions? Look at the misery and suffering that she caused. Then just deny all knowledge of anything. She knew what was going on ages ago and chose to double down, cover it up and saw people’s lives ruined with no problem to her. She is a liar. The only thing she is sorry about is that it was all uncovered and she was caught out.

I’m an IT consultant. I knew at the time of the original prosecutions that it was the software. I’ve seen it myself on projects, on multiple occasions. That’s completely normal, which is why I couldn’t understand how they were managing to prosecute obviously innocent people.

Her own chairman thought she wasn't up to the job. Tears for being found out. Her church will say that sinners have to be forgiven and allow her to continue preaching about honesty & integrity.

Nice that after several hours of being asked difficult questions by Jason Beer in his mainly relaxed style, she then gets to be questioned by this barrister who mainly works in criminal defence and has a much more robust style. I don’t think Venells “I wasn’t there” excuses have fooled anyone. She is being asked questions by members of parliament and can’t ask her staff hard questions. She didn’t ask because she knew the answers weren’t going to be the ones she wanted.

Lives ruined by her malpractice (or if you believe her story, glaring oversights), can't be given back. I'm sure she will escape any kind of meaningful justice, because she's rich and thats always the way! True justice would have her locked up, stripped of the wealth she generated from the role at the post office and never be given a position of power ever again. The church would do well to disassociate itself from her as well!

The failure of our politicians, police, regulators, to investigate something that has been apparent through the media for many years is the true story. Only too often these failures are brushed aside - Hillsborough is another major catastrophe that took years and years to eventually surface. This inquiry should also about all those in authority outside the Post Office.
