  • Talk's Kevin O'Sullivan reacts to Former Post Office boss Paula Vennells breaking her almost decade-long silence on the Horizon scandal as she was quizzed on how things unfolded on her watch.
She stopped mid-answer and reached for a tissue as she was grilled about why she had told MPs that the Post Office had been successful in every case against subpostmasters.
The 65-year-old ordained priest also became visibly upset as the inquiry looked into the Post Office’s response to the suicide of subpostmaster Martin Griffiths in 2013.
As she gave evidence on Wednesday, Ms Vennells admitted she “made mistakes” but denied there was a conspiracy to cover up the scandal.
Kevin says: "Give her an Oscar".

Vennells was protecting POL at all cost and not worrying, at any point, about whether postmasters went to prison wrongly. That’s unforgivable.

Why just David Cameron? The Horizon system was launched in the late 90s and prosecutions started under the watch of both Blair and Brown. Alan Bates lost his PO in 2003. Cameron did not become PM until 2010 and then there were three ministers responsible for the PO all of whom were Liberal Democrats.

Vennells took charge of the Post Office in 2011 so from then on she has been responsible irrespective if she claimed not to know. She was being given daily updates on the cases they were taking to court for the alleged fraud due to the Horizon computer system! The Post Office were acting as Judge and jury as well as prosecution in all these cases and they refused to look into the possibility the system was at fault! All those involved must be charged for their part in this horrific miscarriage of justice and have to give some recompense personally to the victims who have had their lives ruined.

Remember that it doesn't just stop with the Post Office and the Blood Service. This is a problem with all government quangos that have the power to prosecute. For example, NHS Dental operates a computer complaints scheme that is corrupt and designed to force people to repay the cost of free dental care. Even the Architects Registration Board is regularly destroying the reputations and livelihoods of architects by striking them off because a complaint against them might be 'perceived' as wrongdoing. We need a full investigation of all these organisations.

She’s STILL defending HERSELF after this. I agree, I feel she knew what was happening. Then she leaves and becomes a church minister! There is something DEEPLY WRONG with someone like that. There is one word for it. She was the person at the top, she was responsible for her actions. She needs to be honest and take responsibility of her wrong doings and deception. She is not doing this. People like this at the top of large public organisations must surely be the start of something rotten and undemocratic. To all CEO’s better do your job carefully, correctly and honestly because with this wonderful independent media (not newspapers owned by big business) if you don’t do the right thing, you never know what will come down the line. What happened to these postmasters, prison when you are pregnant and separated from your family, suicide, 19 year old teenager put in prison, they were spat upon and their children abused and all innocent, the management of the PO aren’t innocent and their punishment should be far higher than what these innocent people had done to them. PV should also be stripped of all her finances and home with a prison sentence at the very least, she certainly has only herself to blame.

Great point that compensation must also be paid for “opportunity loss”, the years since during which the falsely accused have been trying to get along with their lives, hobbled by the damage to reputations and finances and mental health, the fight for justice and the rewarding lives and financial security they should have had, BUT FOR the actions of the post office. Pay up in full for that as well. For the victims or their surviving families.

I’m following this from abroad so don’t know full details. But, I think this lady was given this top job because she could be manipulated and used as a punch bag. The buck ends with the top but she isn’t the top……..it’s the government who owns the PO. But, again, the manipulators, more than likely government, will have very cunningly put nothing down on paper but only a few words in the club would provide clarity. This lady was given her honour because government had perhaps thought it had got away with it and any repercussions would end up on this lady’s doorstep. But the real culprits will never be brought to justice.

It amazes me that she claims to be unawares, yet at no point becomes curious or suspicious from what others were saying.
Definitely a case of ostrich management
