I must say I am a experienced sewer and I think this is the best video of any kind that I have seen and I have watched many of them. You know how to get your point across and you have a lovely speaking voice. I have a large Chihuahua and this is going to be perfect for her... Thank you for this wonderful video... Since you gave us permission I am going to post this on my Facebook page. I did subscribe and saved it to my favorites so I don't lose it.. I don't want the forget how you did it... :)
Thank you! Your video is so practical, easy, and no-nonsense. You're a wonderful teacher. Because my Wheaten Terrier is slender in the neck and deep in the chest, I made this your way, put it on her inside out, then used safety pins to make it fit her chest better, replaced the safety pins with sewing pins and sewed along that line. I cut up old fleece pants to make a trial shirt, which I then cut in half and marked as a pattern. On the final garment I hemmed the edge and put sleeves in it shaped like human sleeves in sewing (hem the sleeves before you sew the underarm seam and be sure to try the sleeves on the dog before sewing them to the shirt). It's a perfect fit, she loves it, she looks great in it, and there's no hook-and-loop needed. Now I have a wonderful pattern to follow next time and a shirt that will launder like a dream. No more watching her shiver in cold weather after a haircut. Big e-hugs to you!
What a gorgeous pup! We have a 12 year old rescue Saluki, who at the moment is tucked up in her basket *under* a fleece blanket. She's much the same shape as a greyhound - large chest & tiny waist - so I think I'll have a trial run with one of her older blankets, but modify your great instructions to put a waistband on the bottom of the sweater as well as a neckband to pull it in a little. Thank you so much for all the time & effort you put into your videos!
I have been trying forever to get some knitted sweaters done. They are never going to get finished. So I am going to get a couple of these done for my doggies. With this cold weather they need extra help staying warm. Thanks sugar!
I was surprised how easy it was to find a tutorial for pittys tbh, I hope more people out there give them a chance. I used to be afraid of them because I was misinformed and now I can't imagine my life without my girls. This was so helpful and easy, we got hit hard with these temps and its entirely too cold to take them outside with nothing on, thanks!
I just want you to know that you are really one of the ABSOLUTE BEST at teaching someone clearly, and successfully!!! Thank you!! Believe it or not you have helped me tremendously!! I've only been sewing for about 1 and 1/2 years now, and everyone I make things for absolutely has a fit and can't believe I'm new to sewing!! Lol! Thanks to people like you on here I've been able to actually successfully sell some things for extra cash during this crazy pandemic, and been able to protect my family with masks and things I make
Great Video! Its a great idea for a simple sweater, and with as rough and dirty as my dogs can get, I didn't want to spend hours making a sweater they might ruin in a day. This is so perfect. Great step by step approach
Thank you for such a simple and easy project! My pro tip is fabric choice- must have good give! The super soft fleece worked best for me! Also, I taperd the bottom to ensure it would stay dry durning potty walks!
This is such an easy to follow tutorial. I absolutely love the results I achieved. I love how simple the basics of this patter are and you can add finishing touches if you like. I even altered the length measurements by making it longer on the back and rounded off near the underbelly. So simple! I have already purchased more fabric to make another one!
Thanks! You did a great job demonstrating and explaining each step. I'm an experienced sewer, but I didn't want to pay for a pattern or invest a lot of time in a complicated project. I just wanted a quick and dirty way to keep our Boxer warm this winter. She has a couple sweaters, but they get stinky fast, and when we take them off her for washing, she gets so cold that her teeth chatter! I'm going to make several of these for her. Edit to add - the first one looks great! She's a Boxer, with a deep chest and thick neck, so I cut the collar at 3/4 of the belly measurement and added some elastic around her "waist" to keep it from bagging.
Excellent and it fit Foster exactly! I made one from a recycled sweatshirt and now I can get fancy =) Thank you so much, this is a terrific and easy shirt to make! Your directions are easy and clear and the process works beautifully. Your pit bull is about 2X the size of my Foster, but following your directions I was able to get it right the first time.
Excellent video! You got right to the point, you were clear with your instructions, well spoken and easy to understand. You were informative with regards to the material properties. Visually, everything you did was easy to see which will help in duplicating this process. You explained what you were doing and why without any wasted time or getting off subject. This was a true tetorial !! Bravo! I've watched several videos and they seem to complicate the process which had me worried as I'm new to the sewing world, but your video has me confident and excited to dive right in. Thank you! And thank Butterball for being a great model!
Thank you for your video! As Cherokee Rose said it all so well, I am also experienced in sewing and you made this "sew" easy! I can't wait to make a sweater for my Labradoodle "Granddaughter".
Very nicely done! Your explanation and attention to detail made this an easy & fun project. My 12 year old has made several adorable outfits for our family's aging balding Pet. Thank you for sharing and caring.
This tutorial was super helpful. I just made my dog a new sweater for fall and she loves it. Now I know how to do it it'll be super easy in the future.
I accidently made the neck part to big so I added another neck tube. it worked out the extra band was perfect around her wide pit bull chest so it doesnt ride down. Thank you so much your awesome!!!
OMG I am sort of a sewing beginner and this was amazing. first, I tried your envelope pillowcases and they came out great and today I made this for my dog!
Wonderful tutorial! I've watched at least 20, and this is by far the best one I've seen. By the way, that has got to be the cutest name I've ever heard of for a pit! Thanks for sharing!!
I've been looking EVERYWHERE for a sweater with a turtle neck! My pit tends to stretch regular sweaters until they droop down his legs. Thank you for posting this! I'll be sewing my dog a real sweater now
I can't deal with how cute this is! I have two Boxer furbabies & they never sell cute things for larger dogs at the stores. I will be doing this for sure!!! P.S. Butterball is adorbs!!!
Great informative video. I found that for people that don't sew or have become unable to do so can still make these pullover sweaters. Goodwill has wonderful bins of clothes like sweat pants and shirts in xx-large. All that is needed is to get one leg or arm depending on the size of the dog, cut a scolloped design from the base of their belly up the side, going back towards the tail to the base of the back and over to the other side [to cover the hip area]. Maybe you can show a video of this also easy project. Thanks for all the great videos.
Thanks for the pattern and idea! My dog is a crazy shape and I've decided he just needs custom clothes. Making him a blaze orange fleece today, which he can hopefully wear under the hunting vest I'm going to make to go over that too! He'll probably have 6 jackets by the end of this winter 😅
To take it a step further when I made a similar one 2 yrs ago, A simple 1/4 inch seam was used around each armhole. This follow the use of a circle template from a jar lid. It was cut to the desired width, adding a 1/4 in. seam allowance. This means the armhole has is 1/2 in. less than the finished opening, in diameter. This to allow for the neatly sewn seam allowance...Then the stretchy fabric was applied as the neck was done: a 2 in.strip was folded to one inch and cut 1/4 less than the circumference of the circle. The strips were hand baste-stitched followed by the machine stitching. Either way is cute.
I love this :D my boy gets chilly quite often during the winter, but bulkier coats make him too hot. This would be great for him both at night and for walkies as it would fit under his harness...THANK YOU x
I love how you go step-by-step and explain why its done that way.... but once you cut the holes in for the legs, all I could see was a mask for robbing banks LOL....but this has given me the confidence to make a couple for our boxer which might be a little tricky because of the barrel chest.
Simple and excellent tutorial I have been wanting to sew my dogs coat, but could not know where to start, I really enjoyed watching your video Thank you God Bless
Haha my oldest is 4 now and I watch this video every winter to make them sweaters and now literally any time I sew anything I say “the stretchiest part of the fabric” just like you do in the video 😂😂😂😂😂😂 gotta orient the fabric!
Just made one of these for our Lab./Pit. puppy, Hercules. Tried to upload a video response then realized that's not an option anymore. Thanks so much for sharing this tutorial!
*Awe look at Butterball sitting there all patient and cute lol!! My pup LOVES wearing sweaters and coats when it's cold!! He's a staffy/lab mix (i think lol). So he's tall like a lab, but he's got the bully muscles which makes his size a lil harder to fit normal sizes!! He's about 115lbs, with a broad chest and thick neck... but if I buy to fit his neck and chest, the shirts are always way to long (and hard to wear of he's gotta go potty!! Also, my mom has a St. Bernard, and it's really hard to find him tops!! I should make dog apparel especially for those different sized pups and animals!!*
My pup loves his and it's obvious. Arm holes in mine need some adjustment but he's so thrilled that he's warm that he's lying still, straight out, in obvious comfort. Lol
Great tutorial! Reminded me of my Stretch 'n Sew days in the 70's; perfect techniques for today's jersey knits. I'll be making Buddy's out of a felted wool sweater; it gets pretty cold in Michigan!
Thank you for this! I have a Chugweenie and she is too small for the small sweaters and too large and long for the xsmall sweaters! This will be perfect. By the way, you have such a gift for explaining things clearly! Thanks again.
YAY! I have been wanting to do this for YEARS! Thank you SEW MUCH, Vanessa! *HUUGS* and a super Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family. Continued success! ^_^
Vanessa did you forget to tell us to add seam allowances when we cut out the fabric? I went ahead and added 1 inch to allow a half inch seam allowance and it worked perfect. Thank you for the great tutorial. My dog loves his new jacket!
Thank you for this! I made 4 of these from fleece for my little Ellie and she loves them. She is long so I did taper the waist to show off her great figure 😂

So cute, I love that your dog just stays put while you measuring him. He's adorable!

Thank you for giving a pittie a home. They are really the sweetest and most loyal dog. If butterball is a rescue, then double thank you!
He sure is! All my dogs are rescues. We love pits! :)
Great tutorial! I love all the extra little tidbits of info you included like how to find the right side of the fabric :)
Great Video! Its a great idea for a simple sweater, and with as rough and dirty as my dogs can get, I didn't want to spend hours making a sweater they might ruin in a day. This is so perfect. Great step by step approach

Butterball is adorable especially in his wittle bitty puppy sweater
Very nicely done! Your explanation and attention to detail made this an easy & fun project.
My 12 year old has made several adorable outfits for our family's aging balding Pet.

Oh my goodness! I totally love you. All these people that know how to sew .... But not to many good tutorials
I made a really tiny one for my stuffed dog. This is the best tutorial ever made for a puppy sweater! Keep making more awesome videos!
Do you mean a toy, stuffed dog or you had your dog taxidermied?
I accidently made the neck part to big so I added another neck tube. it worked out the extra band was perfect around her wide pit bull chest so it doesnt ride down. Thank you so much your awesome!!!
Practical and easy video. Thank you for saving my Lab/ German shepherd big dog this winter ❤

I just loved that ideas! Thanks Vanessa !
Vanessa did you forget to tell us to add seam allowances when we cut out the fabric? I went ahead and added 1 inch to allow a half inch seam allowance and it worked perfect. Thank you for the great tutorial. My dog loves his new jacket!
She mentioned the seam allowance when she talked about the neck piece
Didn't hear it.
Thank you for this! I made 4 of these from fleece for my little Ellie and she loves them. She is long so I did taper the waist to show off her great figure 😂
This is absolutely brilliant!!! I appreciate this so much! Perfect for fall n winter. Could you do a tank top one?
Yess now I can make matching bff sweaters for my Chi & shep/lab 😁😁
Oh, that was cute! :-) Thanks for the video. I think that I should make one for my dog as part of her Christmas gifts.
Awww this is lovely thank you. Would this work with cotton as want a very easy lightweight one for Halloween.
I am a beginner sewer in the UK. I love that you explain so clearly and not too fast like so many.
Thanks
