Dear Jan! It is funny how fate works for us! Before retiring, my plans were sewing, knitting, painting and so on, all the hobbies I loved and did not have enough time for. Since then, 8 years ago, my interests have switched in the direction of the kitchen and all the rest has been put “in storage”. I still have all the materials, but did not have the motivation. Your video has reminded me of all the beautiful things we can do with sewing and it has motivated me to try again. Hi Jan, I’m newbie and learning from your channel, like your Tip video. This video is great and I actually want to know between right side and wrong side for the plain color fabric. Thanks for answering it. 😊
I have been making kids' footed pajamas with fleece for over 10+ years. It's so easy to put the zipper in since there is no need to worry about finishing the edges: cut the front in one piece, put the zipper face down on the wrong side laid down from the center of the neck down one of the legs. Stitch the zipper down one side, across the bottom, and back up the other side. Flip the piece over and snip all the way down over the teeth and it's done

Is the lightning bolt stitch called a stem stitch? That's what my brother sewing machine has. It looks like a lightning bolt but not exactly like yours, so I'm not sure if I'd be better off just using a regular zig zag stitch. Thanks for the helpful video!
Brilliant! Thank-you. I have sewn all my life, but this is my first fleece project (I'm a senior). This is very helpful. Do you have a video about adding a feaux silk lining to the top a fleece poncho so that it slides more easily on the shoulders?
Can fleece be used for DIY dish cloths? It wrings out well and dries fast, eliminating odors. @@JanHowell yes, it’s a fur tube like winter items to put your hands in and keep them warm. Popular back around around the 16 to the 18th century. One of the old popular Christmas movies the female star had a white fluffy fur one in a scene. I’m thinking White Christmas!
I just made a quilt with a fleece backing and thankfully my brother PQ 1500 has pin feed and an excellent walking foot. I was seriously considering purchasing a pfaff with IDT just to sew this fleece. It was so frustrating. I wish I saw this video first.
What can I do sewing a baby blanket with Minky on the back wrapped around 2” towards the front for binding. It keeps pushing outward and having trouble with feeding it threw ? I’m looking for a new machine I have a brother nothing fancy, what type of sewing machine would you recommend I’m still learning trying to teach my self. Thank you so much I really appreciate you taking time to showing us
Ya, Minky is quite tricky to sew on even for those of us who have sewing a while. Fleece and flannel is much easier. Here is a link to a video where I show some tips for sewing blankets with plush fabric. ruclips.net/video/Dpxx4pO_Vac/видео.html
I’ve been making project Linus quilts for sick kids, and was advised to use fleece backing on the quilts to make them cuddly and soft. I do have trouble quilting them as I almost feel I need to help the quilt through the machine by slightly pulling from the back, I’ve tried used the zigzag stitch, but it’s not constant throughout the quilting … do you have any suggestions… thank you
Jan, I may have already commented on one of your videos, or maybe it was on another channel. Anyway, the black button on your presser foot is a leveler for the bulky seams so the tool for the "hump" isnt necessary. Just sew up to the bulk, raise the presser foot and press the black button simultaneously until it engages. Lower the foot and sew slowly. The button will disengage on its own as it gets past the bulk. If the button doesn't engage initially, take a stitch and try pressing it again and proceed.
Hi Jan, I have just begun using the lightning bolt stitch you suggest for using on the stretch for fleece. Is there any need to secure the ends of this stitch? It doesn't seem that I can backstitch using this stitch on my machine. It seems very secure without backstitching at the ends. I have already learned a lot from your sewing videos and patterns, thank you! My daughter was happy to receive a handmade fleece headband that fits her in the XL size!
I really learned a lot from your video especially the tips about sewing the bulk parts. I have just question. I like to make baby blankets using fleece that with a printed side and plain side. And bind it with Satin double folded binding. Do you have any suggestions on using the machine blanket stitch instead of the zigzag stitch to attach the binding. It looks so beautiful but I am looking at making it even better. Thank you
Hi Jan I just found your channel tonight and this is the first video that I’m seeing and at the end you mention something about Bowling socks do you have a pattern for these anywhere for purchase? I’ve never heard of them before but my grandson is an avid bowler and I’d love to make him some.
Hi Lucy, you can get the bowling slipper pattern here in my site shop youmakeitsimple.com/product/slippers-pattern-instant-download-striped-bowling-slipper-adult-sizes/ or in my Etsy shop, www.etsy.com/listing/227234087/slippers-pattern-instant-download
Here's hoping you can help. Making a nice vest. Down to the hem. There is the front piece and an interfaced facing. To turn all that up for a hem results in a thick wad of fleece that is very unattractive. How to hem this vest in an attractive way. Thank you.
I was planning on make a keyhole scarf with fleece. Would you recommend a straight or zigzag stitch for the hole and edges? I plan to make your hat with a scarf for my next project and have already purchased the pattern. Thanks
I have gotten into the practice of simply when my needle reaches a hump I press down as hard as I can to level the foot on the hump and push in the black button…it will pop out once the presser foot levels out again. I used jumpers for so many years but now it’s one less thing for me to keep up with…lol
You’ll want to adjust settings for sewing on knit fabric. Your manual will have that in there. Most likely you can just adjust the differential feed to shorten or lengthen the stitch. Test on scraps of fleece
Thank you..I can not tell you how valuable this is for someone that just started sewing.

Why does flipping pattern 180deg violate nap direction? The NAP is the same as long as you don't flip 90deg to cut bias, right?

Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
You also have a foot on your sewing machine with a black button that does the same thing!
Yes
What kind of fleece are you using in this video? It seems to be like a fleecy Jersey.
It is regular weight fleece, not polar fleece.
What brand and model sewing machine are you using in this video?
This is a Babylock Verve
Love the hum jumper tip! 👏
So glad!
The lil black button on the presser foot will level out the foot and sew over humps as well.
Yes it does. Not all machines have that option.
The first time I worked with fleece, i wanted to press the creases out of it. I melted the fleece 😂
Ya, you are not the first one.
Good info! Farther the word farther has to do with distance further has to do with ideas.
You are correct
How about tutorial and pattern on fleece muffs. I’d like to make adult and young children sizes but have no clue haw to begin!
What is a fleece muff? Is that for your hands?
@@JanHowell yes, it’s a fur tube like winter items to put your hands in and keep them warm. Popular back around around the 16 to the 18th century. One of the old popular Christmas movies the female star had a white fluffy fur one in a scene. I’m thinking White Christmas!
I just made a quilt with a fleece backing and thankfully my brother PQ 1500 has pin feed and an excellent walking foot. I was seriously considering purchasing a pfaff with IDT just to sew this fleece. It was so frustrating. I wish I saw this video first.
Yes, a walking foot is so helpful.
I have a hump jumper and if i dont take it out and it drops it makes me jump lol
Yes, I know I have done that too. lol
I’ve been making project Linus quilts for sick kids, and was advised to use fleece backing on the quilts to make them cuddly and soft. I do have trouble quilting them as I almost feel I need to help the quilt through the machine by slightly pulling from the back, I’ve tried used the zigzag stitch, but it’s not constant throughout the quilting … do you have any suggestions… thank you
If your machine has the ability to adjust the presser foot I would lessen it a bit. Do you have a walking foot? That would help as well
Jan, I may have already commented on one of your videos, or maybe it was on another channel.
Yes, it works great. But not all have that machine or feature.
No need. You are so welcome
Thank you
I think it may not work as well. Try it on some scrap pieces first. That would be very nice though. Love satin binding
Hi Jan I just found your channel tonight and this is the first video that I’m seeing and at the end you mention something about Bowling socks do you have a pattern for these anywhere for purchase? I’ve never heard of them before but my grandson is an avid bowler and I’d love to make him some.
Hi Lucy, you can get the bowling slipper pattern here in my site shop youmakeitsimple.com/product/slippers-pattern-instant-download-striped-bowling-slipper-adult-sizes/
or in my Etsy shop, www.etsy.com/listing/227234087/slippers-pattern-instant-download
Incredibly helpful, thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome
You are supposed to press that black button on the rear of the foot.
Yes you can do that, but not everyone has that option. I should have mentioned that.
Here's hoping you can help. Making a nice vest. Down to the hem. There is the front piece and an interfaced facing. To turn all that up for a hem results in a thick wad of fleece that is very unattractive. How to hem this vest in an attractive way. Thank you.
you are welcome
I was planning on make a keyhole scarf with fleece. Would you recommend a straight or zigzag stitch for the hole and edges? I plan to make your hat with a scarf for my next project and have already purchased the pattern. Thanks
I would use a stretch stitch to be safe.
I have gotten into the practice of simply when my needle reaches a hump I press down as hard as I can to level the foot on the hump and push in the black button…it will pop out once the presser foot levels out again. I used jumpers for so many years but now it’s one less thing for me to keep up with…lol
Yes, that little button is handy.
What about if you sew fleece with a serger? Do those threads stretch with the fabric or does it need adjusting??
You’ll want to adjust settings for sewing on knit fabric. Your manual will have that in there. Most likely you can just adjust the differential feed to shorten or lengthen the stitch. Test on scraps of fleece
@@JanHowell Thanks so much for replying!! And for the super helpful content! ❤
Great tips for sewing fleece, especially the one about finding the right side. Many thanks Sandie
You are so welcome!
You have the hump jumper presser foot on your sewing machine. That's what that little spring button is for.
I know, isn't it great!
When I was in Home Ec, my teacher suggested we add X’s to the wrong side with chalk.
what a great idea
Thank you!!! it was the information, I was looking for, blessings
You are so welcome
Very informative. My question is how does one get a straight edge. It is generally so wonky when purchased.
I think I explain it in this video ruclips.net/video/Dpxx4pO_Vac/видео.html
if not this one, try this video. ruclips.net/video/4d6QnCMErMU/видео.html
