Defeating an Unfair boss can feel like an Olympic feet. But there comes a point where you have to ask whether or not it's even worth it. One could say that "It's no use"
I feel unless an actual Redeeming official remake of that game i think silver is more unfair because a game is terrible more than unfair because difficulty
@@Dr.SiegMostang I mean...it's a bit of both worlds. I still stand by Alex Rochon's take that Silver is the perfect example of "How Not To Design a Boss" for game design classes, because even if the game he premiered in was better put together, he'd still be an awful boss to fight. Namely, my 2 biggest gripes are in both the size of the arena, and the overall sluggishness and jank of the homing attack, but that second gripe is more a systemic problem with Sonic '06's gameplay as a whole. The arena LOOKS big, sure, but it's actually really small and cramped, and given the general uncooperative nature of the camera, you're not likely to know where Silver is until he's right on top of you. It's basically the exact same problem I had with the Capra Demon in Dark Souls: in the Lost Izalith? Not a problematic encounter at all...but in such an enclosed space as STAIRS...with POISON DOGS...yeah, no thanks, I'd rather cuddle with angry Future Trunks the Edgehog. :/
There is a hierarchy when it comes to difficulty in Boss fights: there’s Insultingly Easy, Easy, normal, Challenging, tough, Hard, Expert and Insane, but these bosses are on a whole other spectrum of difficulty. 12:46 shoutout to those (including myself) who beat it on Hard Pre-Patch.
That’s another list Josh should do; Moderately Balanced Bosses! By that I mean Bosses that aren’t easy, but not hard either. Just the perfect difficulty for those who have adapted to the game and is quick and easy to get the hang of and keep you focused on the goal of the boss.
I think I'm gonna tack 1 more tier onto your list: "Joke/Gimmick". These are boss fights where there _is a fight you can lose,_ but if you know the specific gimmick of the fight, it's trivial. So ones like Gogo from FFVI. Where you can LOSE the fight, unless you play to the gimmick.
Funny thing about the Afton fight in Security Breach is that it isn't even Afton. It's an AI copying his sociopathic bloodlust. Adding to that, according to an interview with Scott Cawthon for the franchise's 10th anniversary, Burntrap here wasn't even supposed to be a boss fight. He had originally intended for him to be a hallucination that shows up throughout the game like the G-Man in Half-Life, but because he didn't communicate that at all Steel Wool thought he was meant to be the final boss. This entire fight and the horrible ending accompanying it is quite literally _one massive mistake._
He didn't communicate anything about what he wanted the narrative to be. I love Scott as a developer, but holy shit, how do you just NOT tell the devs you're working with what your plan is in terms of the plot?! You gave them the narrative elements, sure, but you didn't bother to explain how everything connected together.
Fun Fact: Mike Tyson's bossfight is tailored after how he fought IRL. Even during the height of his career, Tyson had a stamina problem. He couldn't go for long fights so he need to beat you within the first or second round. This is why boxers like Evander Holyfield could beat him. They just stalled him out until he couldn't keep up.
Is that why Mr Sandman in Wii stands there like a dumbass for a long ass time once he does the last Dreamland Express? I mean, I'm pretty sure he was based on him.
I’m kinder on this game than most, and I never understood what everyone’s problem was with the Young Xehanort fight, but Anti Black Coat Nightmare deserves no defense. Absolutely horrible.
The ONLY reason that boss didn't drive me insane is because I would blast tunes and grind in Symphony of Sorcery to relieve stress. Heck, I thought the key blades were so hideous I used the starter ones for every fight. That's how much grinding tempered my stress.
Ascend Heartless Angel is at least telegraphed and comes back from Kingdom Hearts 1, assuming you fought him in Olympus Coliseum. If you're lucky you can cancel it by hitting him with magic or melee, but it's tricky.
The Kingdom Hearts series has been known for having really shit bosses after the release of Kingdom Hearts 2. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep especially is known for Mysterious Figure being one of the most counterintuitive bosses in the series ever designed by the Osaka Team. Not only that, but the story of the Kingdom Hearts really so hot, either.
@@Loner098 To be fair, that's the easiest criticism to make about the Kingdom Hearts series. Most people who discuss Kingdom Hearts these days say the story is either confusing or is badly told. I honestly believe the latter. People have argued "Oh well, he's challenging the conventions of video game storytelling", not knowing that those conventions are in place for a reason.
There was a time when a bunch youtubers made a modded Borderlands 2 server to allow for over one hundred players in a lobby and they all fought Master Gee together and it still took forever
I still recall when you and Alex ranked Mr. Dream on your Top 15 Most Hated Video Game Characters list. Glad you finally took the time to justify that placement.
My toxic trait is apparently watching someone face the final boss of Drakengard 3 and thinking "Oh I could _TOTALLY_ do that! I've played the violin before, I've been in chorus since I was like 8, I know musical timing! You just have to know how to count the notes and play by ear! I'd be able to figure it out!" And yet I'm willing to bet that while I probably _COULD_ do it...and could probably even do it easier than the average rson (due to having a musical background meaning I'm more used to timing) it'd still probably take me multiple attempts and I might even give up at some point because I have a tendency to rage quit for years before trying again lol. So I could probably do it....but will, A. Never do it (mainly because I'm not really interested in the game), and B. Don't want to.
My dishonorable mentions: Dr. Kahl’s Robot (Cuphead) Danger! Danger, Will Robinson! Wily Capsule (Mega Man 7) Fun fact, Keiji Inafune actually wanted this boss to be insanely hard.
When I beat that boss, I actually screamed. Completely unconsciously. Grim Matchstick? The Phantom Express? King Dice? None of them took me that many attempts! (Granted the last one randomly bugged out and I was MORE than happy to take advantage of that after being sent back to the start so much, but that's neither here nor there)
Dishonorable Mentions: *Mitch Connor - South Park: The Fractured But Whole -This whole entire boss is the equivalent of a kid on the playground repeatedly going "Nuh-uH, DiDN't hUrT Me. I'm ImmUNE." All throughout the fight, Connor will teleport around the grid, afflict the entire party with any status ailment, give himself extra turns, steal YOUR turn if you take too long, pull up deflector shields which'll uno-reverse card any damage he takes right back at the attacker, and most annoyingly of all, just randomly declare at various points throughout the battle that your last attack just DIDN'T DAMAGE HIM! Your best bet for this fight is to afflict as many damaging status conditions as possible on him and bleed him out. *Zhang Liang, General of Man - Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty -This was a boss that was way too hard and appeared WAY TOO EARLY in the game. How early? Well... HE'S THE GAME'S FIRST MAIN BOSS! Before you even get into the meat of the game, you gotta deal with this crap. Zhang Liang is STUPIDLY AGGRESSIVE, his deflection timing demands perfection, and while you DO have an AI partner for the fight, he's practically useless since he barely ever does anything like (oh I don't know) ATTACKING THE BOSS TO DRAW HIS AGGRO!!! Oh, and when you deplete his HP, he goes into a second phase where he turns into a monster. Why do I have to grind like crazy just so I can get past the first boss?!!! *Mutated Human Kite 2 - South Park: The Fractured But Whole -We're not done with South Park. This one's also a pain. At first, he isn't too bad, but then he'll pull a BS rule. Instead of getting to go once everyone on your side has had their turn, he'll declare that he gets to go once ANY PARTY MEMBER ENDS THEIR TURN! And to leave him vulnerable to an onslaught, you have to use the new time fart you got in the level to change the time of day. The problem is, it told you that you have to be near a fan in order to use it, so I thought you had to move the New Kid to the tile directly in front of the fan and then use the time fart. I WAS LOSING BECAUSE I THOUGHT THERE WAS MORE TO THE FIGHT THAN THERE ACTUALLY WAS!!! Talk about a sharp contrast, his first two fights were jokes. *Barbados Goetia - Tales of Vesperia -Green Scorpion wasn't kidding how much of a hypocrite he is in combat. First is is mystic art, "NO ITEMS EVER!" (Yes, that's seriously what the move is called) he uses this move EVERY TIME YOU USE AN ITEM! Plus, if you haven't attacked him enough, he'll use "World Destroyer," basically an unavoidable total party knockout. And there's "eliminate," which he only uses when playing on simple mode, this move instantly kills all filthy casuals! In other words, you have to play by HIS rules, otherwise he just flips the table! *Any Boss In A Card Based Game - Various -You know what I'm talking about, games like Plants vs Zombies Heroes, South Park: Phone Destroyer, the card side game in FF7 Rebirth, etc. These kinds of games will have RNG screw you over in the worst way possible. Like stacking the deck in your opponent's favor, stacking your deck against you, or giving your opponent whatever cards they want. Even worse when the game gives them exactly the right cards they need to counter whatever move you make, and you vetter pray to lady luck herself that the AI has a brain fart and just decides to not play them. It's not just bosses either, sometimes these kinds of problems spill over into the regular duels.
I think the fact that Dark Souls's Day 1 patch was what added the checkpoints for the Bed of Chaos tells you all you need to know about the fight. Even the devs realized the mistake they made and took pity on the playerbase. If you bought Dark Souls Day 1 and didn't have an internet connection on your system, you would've had to fight the Bed of Chaos all in one go.
Miyazaki himself stated that The Lost Izalith and Bed of Chaos are his biggest regrets as a Game developer and we’re talking about a game with Sen’s Fortress and Tomb of the Giants
@@graveslayer9666 Well Sen's Fortress is at least well-designed, even if it's irritating on purpose. Tomb of the Giants though I'll wholeheartedly agree.
The Flower already existed in a Rhythm game, its name is Tohoku Evolved. I’ll just talk about its Difficult chart, as its Expert and Challenge charts are too psychotic for me. The song mostly runs at 340 BPM, incredibly fast already, but it’s full of tiring gallops and a mean slowdown that then runs at double-speed. But its ending note has all the evil in the world, across all difficulties, because not only is it 1020 BPM, it’s RANDOM. Meaning you have just a handful of frames to recognize which of the four corners you have to hit, and hope your reflexes are on point enough to hit it. Or you can bracket.
@@graveslayer9666 I have beaten Grey Prince Zote in the Radiant difficulty but haven’t fought the much stronger version of the stupid moth yet but maybe I will fight it in the PC version
What annoys most about Alatreon is that, without Escaton Judgement, it's actually an amazing fight. All of Alatreon's attacks are wonderfully designed to be tough to dodge but give wide openings for you to exploit, and since it acts more like a spellcaster while on the ground, often moving relatively little while unleashing it's power, the fight has a unique feel to it compared to most other monsters in the game, who move around much more. But then they had to ruin it with this awful super attack. EJ is not only an extremely harsh punishment for failing the two DPS checks, it's also completely out of proportion from the other guaranteed OHKO nukes the game had so far. Let's review: Behemoth: You must hide behind comets to protect from Ecliptic Meteor. The comets may be broken by Behemoths attacks, but it's unlikely to happen to all of them. Before properly fighting him, you get a tutorial quest that shows all his mechanics including EM, but even if without it it's pretty clear what to do. When fighting the Extreme version of Behemoth, less comets are available per EM, and in phase 3 he has a DPS check to get a comet, but this version an optional superboss that only gives cosmetic rewards, so it doesn't bother me. Safi'jiiva: Tutorial quest before the actual battle. Sapphire of the Emperor has longer windup than EM and is more visible when he does it (plus, Safi flies into the air to cast SotE, so players won't be able to keep attacking and ignore what's going on, unlike with Behemoth). You always get multiple rocks to hide behind and they can't be destroyed by normal attacks. The windup of SotE makes waves of energy fly outwards that clash against the rocks, letting you see that those are safe spaces Alatreon: No Tutorial. You are only told to bring elemental weapons. You don't even know which element you should bring beforehand. When the battle starts, the Handler and the Field Team Leader remind you once more that you need elemental weapons, but you aren't allowed to use farcasters so you can't go to camp to switch to one. You don't even know you have a dps check, Alatreon just falls over when you succeed and you are informed you have "contained Alatreon's power" without further elaboration. Fail the DPS check? EJ just kills you by causing a massive DoT effect, you just die without knowing what went wrong. And if you're new to the fight and just learning the moves and patterns, you sure as hell won't meet the DPS check. Succeed the DPS check? You still get a high DoT, and if you mistime your healing you can still die from it. Escaton Judgement is guaranteed death because you don't know what you're doing. Both previous nukes not only had the game show them and explain how to survive in a separate, mandatory tutorial fight, but you could still easily figure out how to survive even if you didn't pay attention the first time around, and Behemoth and Safi are intended to be multiplayer fights, so you can just watch what the other players are doing. Alatreon however barely explains anything, with only painful trial and error to learn what's going on, many players are likely to go in solo their first time around to fully experience the fight with no distractions, and even if you take other hunters with you, you can't exactly see what to do from them, they can at most explain what to do in the lobby beforehand, which won't help you if you use the SOS signal.
I can't believe they thought that move was well designed, like it isn't even hard to counter when you know how to do it but it's just inconvenient and annoying having to potentially change your build and even playstyle because of this one single monster just had to have a tedious mechanic.
The fact that a couple people have somehow managed to defeat most things in MH blindfolded, including Alatreon (outside that one big cheater, she got what she deserved in shame and ridicule, It has been done by others) is a miracle. The worst part is that boss wasn't as bad in Tri G or if you have the right setup/team comp. This is a World exclusive problem somehow that is compounded by many other issues exclusive to World.
As someone who absolutely loves Sonic Frontiers, the trials were pretty overly hard and this boss rush was no exception, I only managed to beat it by switching the game to easy mode for it as it'll restock your rings to max 400 for each Titan, unlike normal. Even then it was still bs on the Wyvern, at least the final boss of the dlc was fun and epic as all hell.
I really don't get why that trial won't let you use your actual ring max. The boss rush likely would still be hard with 999 rings, but it should be much more doable.
I think unfair dungeons would make for a good list. My top pick The true final millennium tower with all level 99 enemies that can still tank you even at max level meaning also upgrade weapons to near maximum to win too and I swear it was created that way to tempt you into buying the upgrade dlc’s.
Well hope Touhou’s “American fairy FROM HELL” Clownpiece gets a mention cause holy hell she’s dangerous… so dangerous that she got an entier meme made about how brutal she is… 00/99+ Context in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom there’s a practice mode so you can master the bosses “spell cards” or special attacks Piece(Clownpiece’s cannon nickname) is notorious for how brutal her attacks are regardless of difficulty
I’m surprised you brought up Paper Mario Sticker Star without mentioning the final fight with Bowser. The fight requires you to have a bunch of specific thing stickers just to stand a chance. This is the only fight where you can’t run, so if you don’t have what you need, you have to die/reset back to your last save. The fight is multiple phases, so you might have to die and backtrack for what you need multiple times
It funny as most of the other bosses in smt nocturne are fair and usually don't spam beast and dragon eye. My guess was that someone forgot to add it code to not make bosses spam it.
Pre-Patch Radahn better be on here. Went through the entirety of the shadow of the herd tree DLC beating every boss in 1 to six tries. I still have the tally marks up on my whiteboard for how many tries it took me to beat him before they nerfed his speed and damage down a little. For those curious, 79 fails one success.
Fun fact: Yugioh 5Ds has such a boss. Remember Lotten (from the Crash Town arc)? yup, he is unfair. he uses a quick burn deck that can and will burn you in 2 turns unless you make a pretty specific Deck to counter his. He will always, somehow, be able to deal half your LP in damage on turn one. And that's if you tried to stop him, otherwise, he will OTK you.
Any strong quick burn deck can feel unfair. I had one of the DS games where the absolute hardest opponent is actually mid-rank- Gorz the Emissary of Darkness. Secret Barrel and Just Deserts hurt, and you always know that last card left in his hand is a Gorz.
@@WhiteFangofWar However, unless you remembered the anime, you wouldn't be expecting Lotten's Deck. And even if you did, you would have to rebuild your Deck from scratch because you would need a very specific strategy to win.
A fun story: There's a case in which a boss's difficulty spiked due to changes to the rules of the game. In Yu-Gi-Oh Link Evolution, the game initially used the link era rules. That means, no matter what extra deck summon you performed, it had to be done on the only extra deck zone, or an area affected by a link monster. When around a year after the release of the game that rule got updated to only affect link and pendulum monsters, allowing you to set Fusions, Synchros and XYZs wherever you wanted the game got updated as well. Now, in the story mode, there's an opponent, Zarc, that was prepared for the initial rules. He has 7 dragons in his extra deck, all synchro, fusion and XYZs, and all with broken effects. From clearing your board, to stealing all your attack and possibly insta killing you with it, to stealing your effects and give piercing to ALL his monsters, ignoring your defense. In fact, one of them was even banned in general play, but allowed for the specific battle. In release, the story deck you're given was balanced against him, since he could only summon those behemoths one at a time. But if you played after the update you had to face the possibility that he would summon 2 or even 3 SIMULTANEOUSLY. Is quite the particular case in which balancing the real game unbalanced the videogame boss.
There's actually something you forgot to say during Anti-Black Coat Nightmare's segment: When he's doing his Shadow Steal, he can still attack you while Shadow Steal is still going. Yeah, the attack where he restrains you and drains your health till you only have a sliver of it left can have other attacks mixed with it, meaning that he can basically insta-kill you if he feels like it. I literally couldn't beat him while on EASY MODE until I got the Balloon spell because of that. That's how BS he is.
Imma say it, there are MORE unfair Pokemon bosses than Whitney. *points angrily at Wallace from Emerald* Also, ooh. Camp Lazlo reference at the #1 segment.
Whitney was pre-mainstream internet, so you had to figure her out yourself, or have a friend tell you at school. Gold/Silver also didn't have the forced-easy grind modern Pokemon has, so a lot of time with headphones... Finally, you had very limited resources at that point, and your starters had little ability to cheese the fight.
Emerald Wallace I can kinda forgive since I think it was meant to balance the level 70 Rayquaza you can use. It's a nasty fight in a nuzlocke with level caps though.
Kid Danger: *wearing his mighty pup movie outfit and has Rise Raph's voice* "Get out of the fire, you *goat baa* moron!" *in his own voice* creaks me up!
Not gonna lie, i loved the Alatreon boss fight in world, getting a good team together and fighting it was always so much fun and getting past the dsp check was honestly so satisfyingly, really its biggest sin was that its not explained well enough to you for the first time round.
Saw DDS and Pokemon Ranger in the beginning. I feel content. My personal unfair bosses in no particular order - La Saia from Dark Cloud Beta Brain Tank (second phase especially) Psychonauts Caine from Shining Force Neo Ninjamon from Digimon World 1
I wanted to suggest Malenia from Elden Ring because even though souls games aren't known for being easy, they're still beatable and if you know what you're doing it can be very fun! Then you get to this woman...with her rapid fast attacks, fast paced mobility, the fact she HEALS EVERY HIT(Regardless if you block or not), some of her moves are multiple strike, she gets a second phase that gives her 75% of her health AND her attacks become faster and more deadly(Not to mention adding scarlet rot to the mix...) AND SHE STILL GETS HER HEALTH ON HIT PASSIVE. and I don't think I need to explain my understandable disdain for waterdance fowl...(Which yes still gives health on hit for every hit she gets you with that move...)
Counterpoint: Commander Niall in Castle Sol. If I’m remembering this correctly, he starts off with two of the hardest Stormveil Knights in the game. He also keeps lunging at you, causing Frostbite to build up, and even when you dodge, you barely even get enough time to hit him. And finally his fucking electric leg, which is the bane of my existence! Oh yeah, he can also resummon the knights he had at the start of the battle. You also have to fight him in order to even reach the Haligtree. I genuinely despise this fight, because of how BS it feels. This is the one fight in the game to make me change my playstyle, just so I could take him down without pulling out my hairs. I hate this Winter Soldier.
Well done and can't wait for that video about unfair fighting game bosses (I AM THE PERFECT SOLDIER!!) My dishonorable mentions would be these 2: - Xiazmat from FF12: An optional boss, certainly, but an absolute sponge with 5 million HP and a reflect desperation that can refill all of his health - Dr Muckley from NAM-1975: First game of the Neo-Geo AES and the final boss is unfail. You lose all of your lives, it's Game Over and back to the beginning of the game. As one Jokster says "That's not funny....that's not...URK!"
Unfair Boss Dishonorable Mention: Delirium, The Binding of Isaac. - It's AI is a crapshoot splice of every single boss you've faced on your current run, it swaps between forms erratically and without warning, it has over 10 thousand HP, Damage Reduction in any form that isn't its base form, and the closer it gets to death, the faster it moves and changes forms. You could be dodging a bullet hell with expert positioning, then it swaps into Mom's Foot and stomps you before the sound cue gives you time to react. Also keeping in mind that you will take full hearts of damage in levels post-Mom's mandatory boss encounter, and you have no indication which boss room in the Void is Delirium's, so chances of earning additional items from the other boss rooms are essentially a Russian Roulette. You're not even always guaranteed to go to the Void, unless you defeat Hush, which is the superboss precursor to Delirium. In order to get to Hush you have to defeat Mom's Heart/It Lives! in under 30 minutes, which means getting lucky with items to blow through enemies, and getting lucky with floor layouts and not getting lost. Hush itself is a bullet hell with 6,666 HP and high Damage Reduction, as well, but at least Hush follows patterns depending on his health stages, and you're given two treasure rooms, four chests and a shop for extra items and even healing if you have enough keys and coins stocked up, whereas Delirium and The Void is closer to pure prayer to RNGJesus, which is aptly befitting the biblical themes of TBoI. Possible recommendation for the Fairy Bosses video: Titania from Final Fantasy XIV, purely for her theme "What Angel Wakes Me"
Oh GOD Something Unto Death in the high difficulties of Divergent Universe is an actual nightmare (no joke intended). The fact that it halves your party immediately on starting a new phase, and has a timer to take out more party members is so infuriating. Then there's also the fact that its normal attacks hit like a truck for your remaining party.
*segment for number 1 starts* "there is no fucking way there is a rythem game boss here" *realization* "we talking drakengard 3 arent we" FUCK that boss. WHO THOUGHT CAMERA FUCKERY IN A RYTHEM GAME IS A GOOD IDEA
Some of my picks: Seto 3 (Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories) -Cheating AI with some of the most broken cards in the game, and he’s part of a six fight gauntlet without any checkpoints. Really, the entire Final 6 could be on this list if you were willing to bend the rules a bit. Black Knight (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance) -5 turns. 5 freaking turns to beat an entire boss with just a single unit (plus an accompanying healer). At least you’re given the option to run if you can’t beat him. Fallen Takumi (Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest) -Massive AOE effect combined with his troops bum-rushing your units from every which way. Also, he comes with a clone of himself to add insult to injury. Have fun. Fawful Express (Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story) -Timed boss that needs to be fought near perfectly to beat, and comes with several annoying gimmicks to slow down progress. Absolute Virtue (Final Fantasy 11) -Josh covered this in his longest bosses list already. Go watch that if you’re curious. Darkrai (PMD: Explorers) -7 against 3, with one of your troops being nigh-on useless. Hope you stocked up on Reviver Seeds. Slogra (Super Castlevania 4) -Wonky hitboxes, annoying patterns, and taking minimal damage from your attacks. Thank goodness SotN made him much easier. Boobeam Trap (Mega Man 2) -Let’s make a boss that’s immune to every weapon except for one with only seven shots! Yaaaaay. Beowulf (Devil May Cry 3) -Attacks with massive range combined with soaking up damage like a sponge. To further pour salt in the wound, you don’t even get the satisfaction of taking his weapon; Virgil steals it from you until you beat his second fight. Queen Ga’ran (Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice) -Bends the rules to her favor anytime she feels even the slightest bit inconvenienced. Get ready for a looooong day in court.
Seeing Entei in the introduction was a flashback. I'd say he would count as an almost dishonorable mention. He is the last of a gauntlet of bosses, you fight Raikou and Suicune beforehand. At the start of the fight, he has a shield of flames that will only disappear once encircled enough times before he will start to take damage. Then we get to how damage is dealt in the original Pokemon Ranger. You have to continuously loop wothout lifting the stylus, touching the Pokemon, or taking damage yourself until the Pokemon is captured... or else you start right back at the beginning. Entei has 30 health if I recall correctly. His attacks aren't that hard, and you do have access to at least one water type and your partner, both will stop him in his tracks, but to a kid below 12ish or so, it's brutal. He was the reason I never beat the game as a kid. I can do it almost flawlessly now, but he sucked when I was younger. There is another boss that's worse, though. Steelix. You know that whole, loop without taking damage thing? When Steelix touches your capture line, he deals damage, no exceptions. That was another road block that I could never figure out a good way to do, I just got lucky every time I played the game. On my most recent playthrough (after not playing in about 7 years) I used a fighting type on Steelix and only had to restart twice compared to my normal ten. Much easier.
I remember how when the final boss of the Nier raids in FFXIV was revealed to have the Flower's rhythm game mechanics, every player figuratively (and a few literally) screamed in terror.
I respectfully disagree with Alatreon being unfair, but I understand why so many do take issue with him. A fantastic fight that needed better execution with Escaton judgement
Elemental DPS check aside, unlike Fatalis Alatreon does leave his head exposed quite alot this time around. Most of his attacks have a wind down that puts it close to the ground that even sword and boarding can break and punish effectively. When you aren't worrying about the check it's alot of fun to dance around his attacks and weave in counter attacks. Sadly I don't get to use my boomstick for the fight.
Escaton judgement was such a poory designed move even on paper if they wanted to make alatreon have a mechanic with its elemental instability then why not something more optional like if you hit it with the proper element then it will fall over and change to a stabilized phase for a short time where it can use all it's elements but they do far less damage.
@@VashimuXIV Yeah, EJ is the one thing that keeps me from liking him a lot, also his overall poor elemental hit zones and how two elements are essentially useless to use (water + thunder). The fact that even getting the nerfed version can still faint the player if they don't heal at the right time, and that it's just an unavoidable attack in general, just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Unfair bosses feel more like a punishment to a player than an occasion that players would be thankful for. I have a few that I would put on my list. 1. Jasper Batt Jr. Particularly the second form that never gives you a chance to stand up as he teleports around the arena and throws Hurricane punches your way. 2. Demyx from Kingdom Hearts 2. Dance Water Dance will never leave your head! 3. Lady Comstock from BioShock Infinite. She raises the dead, she's annoying to damage on a regular basis and you need to fight her three times!
1. If it's only the second phase, then I doubt he would count it. Especially since the first phase is intentionally-easy and the third phase is just easy by itself. (Outside of one attack which is entirely unblockable and unavoidable unless you use the invincibility.) ... Unless, of course, Josh includes it out of spite... In which case, he'll have lost a lot of credibility in my eyes.
I completely disagree with 2. I've heard people go on and on about how much the fight with Demyx sucks, I don't get it. I had no trouble with it at all... when I finally learned how to equip extra attacks. I was a dumb fucking kid.
@matttestani8105 I had that skill equipped all the time so I also didn't have much of a problem with him. I was just thinking about what Josh would pick.
Yes, that bloody Entei boss fight from Pokemon Ranger, thank you!! (From the intro, mind you) Edited to add: ALL of the Sticker Star bosses had me look up guides on how to beat them all, as there were NO IN-GAME hints about how to handle them at all!! I'm dead fucking serious.
@@BJGvideos I only managed to clear Sticker Star as I had a guide up throughout my entire playthrough. If I have to have a freaking guide up at all times just so I can clear the game once, your game design is SHIT. At least for other games I've played, I've had guides up just so I'd have reference points of where I need to go and what I need to do next, then I'd handle the rest from there. For Pokemon ScarVi, I only used them to find overworld Trainers and to plan my course of action regarding the 3 main arcs, based upon level-scaling. I took care of the rest from there. :P At least for Entei, I was eventually successful. And I was playing blind.
The 1st Commander from Guardian Tales. It's actually a really fun gacha that filled in my void for 2D Zeldas until Echoes of Wisdom, but the bosses aren't the best. Season 2 gave us a really good and fair boss that forced you to use a preset character and build and it was so popular that they kept the idea for the rest of the season. Unfortunately, only the season's final boss was as good if not better as many of them ignored what made that boss so special: a fast paced multi-phase battle of equals where you still had a way to heal. Instead, you were pit against enemies that massively outmatched you in DPS and health in all their phases. By far the best example was the boss I mentioned because she also has a unique gimmick that wasn't seen anywhere in the world. On the contrary, the game has constantly taught you that if an enemy drops *anything* that's your cue to leave, even if the attack didn't have prediction lines. This fight suddenly changes things to make it so that not touching enough of those very bullet-looking blue orbs you are insta-killed by an unavoidable attack. I had to look up a guide because everything up to that point had told me they're something I want to avoid and why I kept dying on the spot. And despite being able to make you instantly lose, she still has a massive health pool and a second phase. The second half of the fight changes the rules *again* by now adding a red booster (that looks even more hazardous to you, might I add) to help shatter her barrier and give you the blue boosters that now don't directly apply the boost to you and instead a small area that acts as a safe zone. Did I mention that the Knight moves a lot when attacking so you might die because he moved too far? The worst part is that World 18 has a rematch for *every single major boss of Season 2* and they're just as strong as before. If last time you decided to just brute force the fight by using your gems to respawn as many times as necessary, allow me to introduce you to the season finales' special gimmick: limited respawns! Don't worry, they still cost gems.
Within reason I can sort of accept fights that are difficult beyond measure as long as I get to keep fighting over and over and adapt; but fights with long backtracking that make you waste time away from the fight that prevents engagement is crossing the line.
I actually had the biggest laughing fit during the flower fight. I guess my lack of anger for this fight comes from expecting it. Between the fourth wall breaks, and times I deal with fake outs in games (like MGS 3) I guess I'm either numb or find it interesting when a scenario does punish a player for not playing attention (though I know this isn't always great like in Arkham City)
You know of vtubers, have commented on videos of SAO abridged and your content has become much more refined over the years since your early days of top ten lists I used to watch many years ago. Dude you're as awesome as ever
The thing with number 1 is, the others are pretty easy to see that they end up being frustrating because of design flaws, but Yoko Taro? It's pretty clear that evey bit of frustration is intended, and probably it's because I didn't play the game myself but I cannot help myself but respect the coldly calculated animosity that this fight has towards the player. Hell, he even made the control sightly different from the Drakengard 1 fight so people who thought that it'd be the same would need to reset at least once.
If you think the Flower on Drakengard 3 is this bad, try doing it while colorblind. I have really bad color blindness and then having the game forcibly switched to a monochromatic color pallet was an exceptional FU to players like me
I got to number one and was like "Oh, yeah. The random rhythem game boss at the end of Drakengard 1 really deserves to be #1 here. It really is just a piece of- ... *WHAT DO YOU MEAN DRAKENGARD 3!?!?!* THEY ACTUALLY REUSED *THAT* BOSS OF ALL THINGS?!!?!?!?!?!"
Any number of ATLUS RPG's have bosses that could make this list. Everyone talks about SMT III's fight against Mot with his endless extra turn spamming, but I for one think Shekinah from SMT Strange Journey Redux deserves a mention. Not only is the fight your standard true ending ATLUS final boss, but she plays dirty. Once you finally get her health down to near zero after a lengthy fight, she just fully heals herself by forcing her compatriot to sacrifice herself, starting the whole fight over again with no recovery for you. She then becomes tanky AF sponging all attacks including almighty with only same alignment co-op attacks doing any reasonable damage. But the BS continues because when her health starts dropping below half again she starts using unique Torah skills that reflect all attacks from a set demon alignment, forcing you to swap out all of your demon stocks with different alignments just so you can keep the pressure, and even then she can just use Torah again to block all the attacks from the new alignment co-op attacks she uses, forcing you to do it AGAIN and again. Even with the easy level grinding DLC that would trivialize difficulty in this game, the fight was still insanely hard and unfair. Shekinah felt more like an optional sadistic superboss than a mainline story boss...
14:21 For those struggling with the boss here’s what you need to do. Chica and monty: self explanatory shut the door/vent on them before they get to close. Roxy: when possible if your in the suit MASH THE CHICA VOICE BOX BUTTON! that’s what your supposed to do to get rid of roxy. The blob is a similar story: get in the suit and use the voice box. I don’t remember exactly if thats what your supposed to do. But i remember the blob having a weakness to freddy. Hope this helps!
My favourite part about Alatreon's bullshit has to come from the fact that _the game doesn't tell you what element you need to bring before starting the mission._ The Special Assignment version of the fight, "Blazing Black Twilight," always starts Alatreon off in fire mode, but you can't repeat that quest, so repeat fights for materials have to be done through the Event Quests. *Quests. Plural.* Alatreon has _two entirely separate_ quests that _also_ don't tell you what element you need to start with. The only indication you get is *THE NAME OF THE QUEST ITSELF.* "The Evening Star" will always start on fire, and "Dawn of the Death Star" will always start on ice, but you'll never know that unless you find out _from someone else,_ or just went in completely unprepared and got your ass handed to you. As an added bonus, these quests also rotate daily, meaning you have to _actively check_ which one you have if you're doing multiple runs, and unlike the other Event Quests in MHW, the rotation *IS PLAYER SPECIFIC.* The rotation starts when the player beats the Special Assignment version of the fight, meaning depending on when you beat Alatreon for the first time, you could have "The Evening Star" on the same day that someone else has "Dawn of the Death Star," which *THEN* means communication with your hunting buddies is *PARAMOUNT* before even starting the fight! They also didn't properly gate off Alatreon or Fatalis, for that matter. It's generally recommended to reach Master Rank 100 before fighting them since then you can augment Master Rank armour to its maximum values, but the MR requirement to do the quest is still MR 24, the same rank as most of the other post-game quests, despite being designed like it's assumed that you are MR 100.
Goddamn. That Monster Hunter entry. Good thing I stopped playing World after finishing the main story because I can imagine tearing my hair out trying to defeat it. Also, that Wyvern rematch at the Master Koco Trial is one of the reasons I didn’t even finish the DLC story. Here are a few unfair bosses on my own: -Astral Void (Kirby: Star Allies) -Clyde (Pac-Man World 2) -Stygian Zinorge (Monster Hunter Stories) -Primordial Malzeno / Narwa the Allmother (Monster Hunter: Rise) -Booga (Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age) -Black Dragon / Fang the Sniper / Egg Fortress Zone Boss (Eggman) (Sonic Superstars) -Shekinah (Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux) - Captor Spider (Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth) -Erebus (Persona 3: Reload - The Answer) -Lou (Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock) -Telethia (Xenoblade Chronicles) -Gate / Nightmare Mother (Mega Man X6) -Wily Capsule 7 (Mega Man 7)
Hey Josh. For the Wyvern fight, did you know you can hold down the parry button and as long as it’s held down it counts? You don’t have to time the button press. Just hold down the button when he starts to swing. I discovered this on my own in my playthrough and it really helped with the difficulty.
I flippin' knew that the Ending E boss fight in Drakengard 3 was gonna be on this! I never played it, but when I heard how this fight goes down...yeah, I'd be losing my marbles over it. For me, personally, the most unfair boss I've fought was that stupid Gilded Knight in Code Vein. Yeah, I'm sure that there are a good number of people who were able to beat it, but for me...I died from the thing over 24 TIMES!!! And I still can't beat it!!! I had moments where I was just one hit away from winning the fight and it struck me down at the last second! I winded up rage quiting the game! I want to go back to it because the lore of Code Vein is compelling...but I keep reminding myself of that darn boss...
I know she’s from a fighting game, but PARACE L’SIA. I almost broke my controller trying to beat her for the umpteenth time! Also, there is that one Scarlet final boss fight from the Touhou series that is 150% impossible.
Interesting video topic to see. Oh, and regarding the bosses in Fighting Games, look up the term ***SNK Boss*** and you'll have PLENTY of options for that kind of Unfair Boss.
One I would like to add is Minotaur from Shin Megami Tensei IV. Now, many would like to compare Minotaur to Matador from Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne as a similar early game roadblock, but I would say that there are quite a few differences that makes Minotaur way worse. First of, Matador actually has a central gimmick that you can actually work around and you are given plenty of tools to deal with it. Central to Matador's kit is the move Red Capote which maximizes his evasion. He also uses wind magic as well as a mix of buffs and debuffs to deliver devastating physical attacks. Now here is the thing, there are plenty of things you can find just before the boss that resists wind magic and there are several ways to get both evasion debuffs for Matador and accuracy buffs for yourself to deal with Red Capote. Also, Matador's most powerful attacks require quite a bit of setup to pose a real danger. If used without that setup then they are little more than a slight nuisance. There is also that fact that if you have been diligent with your grinding, you might even have a party wide heal spell by this point. and finally, Matador is the third boss you will encounter in the game. You have already come across two others that help you get acclimated to the games systems. Now compare this with Minotaur. It has no central gimmick and instead is focused on raw physical attacks. Now the problem is that this is the very first boss of the game, so you are very limited in what resources you have available, and anything that resists physical attacks this early is near non-existent. Things such as buffs and debuffs are also in short supply and those few available aren't really useful in this fight, not only due to the type, but also cause you are very limited in how many times you can cast it before going dry. But the real problem here is that in this game, everything hits like a two-trailer semi and Minotaur is no exception. But not only does he hit hard, he also can act three times per turn, contrast this with Matador's two. and not only that, someone thought it wise to give this boss elevated crit rate meaning not only does he get the chance to hit even harder, but due to the games systems, he get's extra turns. Oh, and this game also has something called Smirk which grants near perfect evasion and guaranties that the next hit will be a crit. And wouldn't you know it, critting grants Smirk. Also unlike Matador, Minotaur can use it's most powerful moves without any setup, and as these moves benefit from Smirk, it can end your party right there in a single hit. Thinking you can just grind to get past it? Hahaha no. Killing mobs in this game hardly gives any experience as most experience you get in this game is from side quests, something that is very limited this early in the game. This also means, not party wide heal, and things such as healing items are in short supply. Most of what you need to actually have a decent shot at this fight is only available "after" you have beaten it. And then finally, what truly elevates this fight into unfair territory is that it can be lost before it even starts as you have some companions with you, and it will be picked randomly which one will join the fight. Here's the thing, one of them casts magic that the boss is immune to, and being hit by something you are immune to grants Smirk. So yes, you can get completely screwed over by something completely out of your control. You can prepare all you want, if you get that companion with you in that fight, you might as well reset and try again as you ain't gonna win. Now that is why I rant Minotaur as such an unfair fight.
Honestly, Whittney can take a rain check in terms of honorable mentions for pokemon, I'd frankly argue theres a significantly more irritating and pokemon boss who rightfully deserves that slot more. Evice, the final boss of pokemon colluseum. To start with, colluseum is an incredibly slow game, with very limited exp to go around for team building. It also has incredibly slow battles, as every battle is a double battle. So, cue one final boss gauntlet later, with no breathing room to heal between fights, and potentially limited pokeballs between battles, and you encounter the enemy whos been forehadowed as the final boss, with a tyranitar as their catchable pokemon ( a friendly remkmder that nearly every battle in the gauntle also contains a shadow pokemon to catch), which youll no doubt use your one master ball on first time though Only for twist, the phenac city mayoy was the true villain all along, sporting a slacking and skill swap slowking as their leads, a combo SO BROKEN, its the reason skill swap has been banned in competitive battling to this day. On top of that, evice also has a pseudo legendary shadow pokemon of his own, bei g a shadow metagross. Same BS catch rate as the tyranitar, and likely one master ball poorer. If we're talking annoying bosses, he takes the cake by a landslide.
Funny how this countdown which has Mike Tyson from Punchout as one of the picks came out the same day the real Iron Mike fights Jake Paul live on streaming services.
there are 2 boss fights, that I have never been able to beat and just gave up on how difficult / unfair they are -Jevil (Deltarune), I know that he's a super boss, but Spamton at least gave me moments where he did nothing (I was able to beat him first time, with only Susie with a teensy bit of health left) -Becky (Nefarious), the control sceme is super annoying + it having 3 phrases, no clue on what to do in each phase and being send back to phase 1 if you lose in the other 2
Jevil is insanely tuned, yeah. It took me quite a while to beat him, and that was also with the help of having a list of the effects that can happen on the side. He's...doable, but I agree Spampton was a lot easier.
Unfair bosses are just ones that you can't believe how they exist and how frustrating they can be without being a fun challenge. Basically, bosses like this can only be won by pure luck instead of gradually being skilled.
Shadow Okumura from Persona 5 Royal is a common pick for unfair bosses. You have to beat down multiple waves of robots that all share a weakness. Sounds easy enough, but they start to get beefier and beefier as the fight goes on. They only focus on one party member at a time, meaning you're in REAL trouble if Joker is targeted. Okumura frequently debuffs your allies and buffs one of his minions (though you can easily nullify that with certain skills). You'll also notice that you can't perform All-Out Attacks after knocking all four robots down, and that's due to a single coding oversight(?). Okumura himself is counted as an active enemy, but can't be targeted. And since not all enemies all on the ground, you can't do an All-Out Attack. And the biggest frustration? You have two turns to kill all of the robots before they run away or explode. And I put emphasis on "kill". If even ONE of the robots flees, then another set of four FULL HEALTH robots enters the fight, forcing you to redo the wave, but without the resources you just used. Speaking of time limits, did I mention that THIS FIGHT IS TIMED? You have 30 minutes to win, or it's game over. Making matters worse is the final two phases. You first have to face a GIANT robot that soaks up damage like a mattress, AND he can ONE-HIT KILL you if you don't prepare for it. Make it past him, and you face against Cognitive Haru. After one full turn in the fight, she will self-destruct, which can ALSO kill you instantly if you're not prepared (and this is the LAST PHASE, by the way). Knowing all of this, is it any surprise that a lot of people REALLY do not like this fight? And yet, you can blow through it without problems if you know how to exploit the Baton Pass mechanic. Don't use multi-hit attacks immediately. Use single-target attacks and elemental items to build up your Baton Pass damage, THEN use a multi-hit attack once it's at max power. Use Dekaja and Dekunda to remove the robot buffs and party debuffs whenever necessary. Make sure you have Makoto in your party, as she can use Makajam on the giant robot and prevent him from ever using his super move. And when Cognitive Haru explodes, make sure you're healthy and buffed enough to survive it. Once you have a firm grasp over how the game works, Okumura becomes a complete joke.
Couple other things about the blazing black dragon. The dragon element applies to the DPS check throughout the entire fight so if you can’t reliably break the horn focus on weapons with that instead. Dual blades are the most effective weapon against him because they profit from elemental damage the most.
Dishonorable mention! Son of the Beach - CrossCode (A New Home) Effectively the only Super-Boss of the game. It is a re-skin of Son of the East, a boss that serves as both a mid-boss and a 2-on-1 boss that is the gatekeeper between the Mid-Game and End-Game. Son of the Beach however is a post-game post-DLC superboss that uses of the idea of a boss that switches elements and ups it by giving it all of them rather than just the two of Son of the East. Problem is in later phases of the boss, each element comes with a brand new flavor of bullshit and cheesing the boss is just off the table because the cheese combat art is off the table due to the boss having the ability to dodge. It may be the only Super-Boss of CrossCode, but by God, does it ever suck.
special mention to Commantis from KHDDD, specifically in a level 1 critical run(w/ ng+ Dream eaters which're required), both the light cycle and actual boss fight. the light cycle's painful cuz Riku can only take 3 hits from it before dyin. the back attack it does is nigh unavoidable even if you attempt swerve out of the way, which is how it can be avoided, but most of the time Riku gets hit. the pain of doin the cycle section over is not that bad, but it is bad considerin no save til after that section, or you leave and save somewhere else. the actual boss fight's even worse cuz depending on riku's commands, he could send himself into to the flow motion rail which is a death sentence since he can't activate a normal command during flow motion til after he lands again Slow is Commantis's weakness, but that is actually helping it more than its helping you even though its the best way to beat it. cuz its Sleep Bomb becomes a multi-bombardment attack while slowed, which is bad as it insta-reduces Riku's hp to 1. its even worse considering after getting hit, esp in air, there's a 1-1.5 sec delay before you can select a command like cura/curaga, so its disc throw attack can and will Clip and Kill riku before he can even heal after its sleep bomb hits
Glad you’ve incorporated the word BS bosses in this video I applaud you for including it dude. Since I use it for some selective problematic bosses I’ve encountered. Especially Xaldin from KH2
For me, it mot from shin megmai tensei nocturne. The fact he can spam more turns with magic increase buff and megidolaon is just bull. Best thing you can do it spam eletric attacks and evasion buff and debuffs and hope for the best
Honestly thought when you mentioned Dream Drop Distance your entry was going to be Julius. Honestly the only way I was ever able to beat FrankenPete was to do the Balloonra spam. My entries. Slogra: Super Castlevania 4, resists more damage than Dracula, damages you with a seismic shake and then the freaking beak attack! Wily Capsule: Mega Man 7, To quote Caddicarus he can SUCK ON COLD MEAT! Bad case of the teleports, vulnerable to a wonky weapon and if he catches you slipping, you're cooked! Kaiser Sigma: Mega Man X3: Like Dracula his only weakness is his head, his very tiny head on his Warhammer 40K Dreadnaught body! Oh and if you screw up the lava sequence after you do beat him you have to fight Darth Mr Clean all over again! Yozora: KH3 Re:Mind DLC, Microscopic windows to hit him, he hits like a freight train while he can apparently access the Speed Force with how fast he is and he can steal your health, items and potentially your Kupo Coin if you're not careful. Masakado: SMT V Vengeance, Post game extra bosses are one thing but a boss that heals every time you strike his weakness (which is everything BTW but is balanced out with his massive health pool and 8 press turns) while dealing ungodly amounts of damage. Yeah if you knock this down to safety mode I won't blame you.
It also has the side effect of the achievers defending the bad content because they lose the perceived prestige of forcing themselves to do it.
Oh no, not that stupid silver Hedgehog again
Jokes on you I’m a masochist
Would you say they are lunatic or phantasm difficulty?
Insultingly easy: The fish bowl from Earthworm Jim, not even a boss
Torture: Basically any Touhou fight
I think I'm gonna tack 1 more tier onto your list: "Joke/Gimmick". These are boss fights where there _is a fight you can lose,_ but if you know the specific gimmick of the fight, it's trivial.
So ones like Gogo from FFVI. Where you can LOSE the fight, unless you play to the gimmick.
@@gimmeyourrights8292 lunatic and phantasm are Touhou difficulties, sooo yeah
Scott, your a good man but NEVER Go Triple A, EVER AGAIN
.......Talk about shooting yourself in this foot _and it wasn't even on purpose._
Dammit Scott why why didn't you wait till ruin to retire, you made Ennard this is like second nature to you!
@@massgunner4152 What about Ennard?

With an arrow pointing at him to boot, yeah that was on purpose 🤣
He's not a masochist, he just wants to see if his body can take it. :P

Pretty sure having a lung problem would stunt anyones stamina
@k96man he was known for doing lines so thats to be expected.
Is that why Mr Sandman in Wii stands there like a dumbass for a long ass time once he does the last Dreamland Express? I mean, I'm pretty sure he was based on him.
@@TheCrimsonCoon I want to say he was based off of Joe Fraizer not Iron Mike. He even hails from Philidelphia, the same city Joe is from.

Ah yes, Anti-Black Coat Nightmare! Who could possibly forget the poorly telegraphed stun locks that make Heartless Angel look sympathetic?
As soon, AS SOON as you put in the skit about a perfect rhythm chain, ALL OF THE MEMORIES CAME BACK!
TO THIS DAY, I still have yet to beat it!
There was a time when a bunch youtubers made a modded Borderlands 2 server to allow for over one hundred players in a lobby and they all fought Master Gee together and it still took forever
Like a REAL raid boss!
I don’t think a “real” raid boss is supposed to be only killable by a random mechanic that you’ve never used or had knowledge of before then.

I'd be able to figure it out!"
And yet I'm willing to bet that while I probably _COULD_ do it...and could probably even do it easier than the average rson (due to having a musical background meaning I'm more used to timing) it'd still probably take me multiple attempts and I might even give up at some point because I have a tendency to rage quit for years before trying again lol. So I could probably do it....but will, A. Never do it (mainly because I'm not really interested in the game), and B. Don't want to.
That game was meant to be a middle finger to people at the end. I would not hesitate to resort to cheating if I had to
My dishonorable mentions:
Dr. Kahl’s Robot (Cuphead)
Danger! Danger, Will Robinson!
Wily Capsule (Mega Man 7)
Fun fact, Keiji Inafune actually wanted this boss to be insanely hard.
When I beat that boss, I actually screamed. Completely unconsciously. Grim Matchstick? The Phantom Express? King Dice? None of them took me that many attempts!
(Granted the last one randomly bugged out and I was MORE than happy to take advantage of that after being sent back to the start so much, but that's neither here nor there)
Seriously… f(yay)ck that robot.
My dishonorable mention:
Odin (Final Fantasy VII Rebirth)
That infamous Zatetsuken insta-kill you have little to no chance at surviving!
Dishonorable Mentions:
*Mitch Connor - South Park: The Fractured But Whole
-This whole entire boss is the equivalent of a kid on the playground repeatedly going "Nuh-uH, DiDN't hUrT Me.
*Zhang Liang, General of Man - Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
-This was a boss that was way too hard and appeared WAY TOO EARLY in the game. How early?
*Mutated Human Kite 2 - South Park: The Fractured But Whole
-We're not done with South Park.
*Barbados Goetia - Tales of Vesperia
-Green Scorpion wasn't kidding how much of a hypocrite he is in combat.
*Any Boss In A Card Based Game - Various
-You know what I'm talking about, games like Plants vs Zombies Heroes, South Park: Phone Destroyer, the card side game in FF7 Rebirth, etc.
Mitch Conner is basically Cartman being, "Im trying to be GOD!"
Dude... Bancholeomon in Cyber Sleuth is on a whole different level. 3 words: Flashy Bancho Punch!

Oh lord, Grey Prince Zote… HOW DOES ONE MOVE SHARPLY TO THE RIGHT DURING THE MIDDLE OF THEIR LEAP DOWN.

Let's review:
Behemoth: You must hide behind comets to protect from Ecliptic Meteor.
The windup of SotE makes waves of energy fly outwards that clash against the rocks, letting you see that those are safe spaces
Alatreon: No Tutorial.
Mike Tyson has gone from being one of the hardest bosses of all time to losing to Jake Paul. What happened?
Jake Paul cheated.
Age and dump trucks full of money.
About time, it’s been a few months since the poll on this. I can’t wait to see what made the list

Can’t have a “Annoying boss” list without the bed of chaos.
Even die-hard Dark Souls fans hate this fight
Pre-Patch Radahn better be on here. Went through the entirety of the shadow of the herd tree DLC beating every boss in 1 to six tries. I still have the tally marks up on my whiteboard for how many tries it took me to beat him before they nerfed his speed and damage down a little. For those curious, 79 fails one success.
He wasn’t even that hard in my opinion. At least he doesn’t have a bad walk back to his boss room
Nobody remembers Rex Raptor from Eternal Duelist Soul?
Fun Fact, you can ABSOLUTELY save Zote without fighting him in Godmaster.

@@TennoWolf I haven't yet. Fought him a few times, decided it wasn't worth it, and left. Zero wins against Zote so far.
A fun story:
There's a case in which a boss's difficulty spiked due to changes to the rules of the game.
*points angrily at Wallace from Emerald*
Also, ooh.
Even more than Whitney, the Entei fight he shows near the beginning, from the first Ranger. That fight is rage-quit bait
Oh, you’re going to *love* Explorers of Sky’s true final boss.
Emerald Wallace I can kinda forgive since I think it was meant to balance the level 70 Rayquaza you can use.

Saw DDS and Pokemon Ranger in the beginning. I feel content.
My personal unfair bosses in no particular order - La Saia from Dark Cloud
Beta Brain Tank (second phase especially) Psychonauts
Caine from Shining Force Neo
Ninjamon from Digimon World 1
I would put Entei way higher than Whitney as an unfair boss
Well done and can't wait for that video about unfair fighting game bosses (I AM THE PERFECT SOLDIER!!)
My dishonorable mentions would be these 2:
- Xiazmat from FF12: An optional boss, certainly, but an absolute sponge with 5 million HP and a reflect desperation that can refill all of his health
- Dr Muckley from NAM-1975: First game of the Neo-Geo AES and the final boss is unfail.
Possible recommendation for the Fairy Bosses video: Titania from Final Fantasy XIV, purely for her theme "What Angel Wakes Me"
An Unfair Boss or Bullsh*t boss for me would be the Collector from Dead Cells and Something Unto Death from Honkai Star Rail
I genuinely have no idea how you couldn't put the first Wizpig race on here.

Seto 3 (Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories)
-Cheating AI with some of the most broken cards in the game, and he’s part of a six fight gauntlet without any checkpoints. Really, the entire Final 6 could be on this list if you were willing to bend the rules a bit.
Black Knight (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance)

Fallen Takumi (Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest)
-Massive AOE effect combined with his troops bum-rushing your units from every which way. Also, he comes with a clone of himself to add insult to injury. Have fun.
Fawful Express (Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story)
-Timed boss that needs to be fought near perfectly to beat, and comes with several annoying gimmicks to slow down progress.
Absolute Virtue (Final Fantasy 11)
-Josh covered this in his longest bosses list already. Go watch that if you’re curious.
Darkrai (PMD: Explorers)
-7 against 3, with one of your troops being nigh-on useless. Hope you stocked up on Reviver Seeds.
Slogra (Super Castlevania 4)
-Wonky hitboxes, annoying patterns, and taking minimal damage from your attacks. Thank goodness SotN made him much easier.
Boobeam Trap (Mega Man 2)
-Let’s make a boss that’s immune to every weapon except for one with only seven shots! Yaaaaay.
Beowulf (Devil May Cry 3)
-Attacks with massive range combined with soaking up damage like a sponge. To further pour salt in the wound, you don’t even get the satisfaction of taking his weapon; Virgil steals it from you until you beat his second fight.
Queen Ga’ran (Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice)
-Bends the rules to her favor anytime she feels even the slightest bit inconvenienced.
(Outside of one attack which is entirely unblockable and unavoidable unless you use the invincibility.)
...

The humble Flesh Prison:
Yes, that bloody Entei boss fight from Pokemon Ranger, thank you!!
(From the intro, mind you)
Edited to add: ALL of the Sticker Star bosses had me look up guides on how to beat them all, as there were NO IN-GAME hints about how to handle them at all!! I'm dead fucking serious.
I KNOW RIGHT?!
At least for Entei, I was eventually successful. And I was playing blind.
@@PRT95 I think it's been explained to death how legit BAD Paper Mario: Sticker Star is.
Seeing the icon of sin in the end of the intro speaks to me on a spiritual level.
The moment in the number one part when it said sike. I said, "Drakengard?" Outloud and shouted i knew it when the boss theme started to play! XD
didn't realize people found grey prince zote that annoying
like idk it's not a fight i'd say is overly frustrating but that might just be me
Within reason I can sort of accept fights that are difficult beyond measure as long as I get to keep fighting over and over and adapt; but fights with long backtracking that make you waste time away from the fight that prevents engagement is crossing the line.
Its hilarious you put out this video around the time Mike Tyson got cheated out of what is likely his final fight with Jake Paul
My roommate did the Drakengard 3 boss a year or two ago, with a video guide to help with the timing
The catch? **HIS COPY WAS LAGGING**
They not only reused it.
THEY MADE IT MUCH WORSE!
I mean, the actual company literally said they "get off on your tears".
@@MasterZebulinyep.
They could have easily made it on this list, considering as you mentioned, they posted on an update: "We get off on your tears."
@@AznOmega What a bunch of jerks, lol.
Nice, Josh. I’m looking forward to the list about FAIRY GAME BOSSES(!!!)
Never stop making videos Josh.
*Quests. Plural.*
Alatreon has _two entirely separate_ quests that _also_ don't tell you what element you need to start with.
Here are a few unfair bosses on my own:
-Astral Void (Kirby: Star Allies)
-Clyde (Pac-Man World 2)
-Stygian Zinorge (Monster Hunter Stories)
-Primordial Malzeno / Narwa the Allmother (Monster Hunter: Rise)
-Booga (Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age)
-Black Dragon / Fang the Sniper / Egg Fortress Zone Boss (Eggman) (Sonic Superstars)
-Shekinah (Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux)
- Captor Spider (Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth)
-Erebus (Persona 3: Reload - The Answer)
-Lou (Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock)
-Telethia (Xenoblade Chronicles)
-Gate / Nightmare Mother (Mega Man X6)
-Wily Capsule 7 (Mega Man 7)

Hey Josh. For the Wyvern fight, did you know you can hold down the parry button and as long as it’s held down it counts? You don’t have to time the button press. Just hold down the button when he starts to swing. I discovered this on my own in my playthrough and it really helped with the difficulty.
#9 you are so right, i DID block that from my memory, thanks for bringing it back.
@@kadajsnightqueen flandre, she is just kinda hard but not the worst
If he does a list on unfair fighting boss fights, I will be surprised if Parace L'Sia ISN'T the most unfair.
So, cue one final boss gauntlet later, with no breathing room to heal between fights, and potentially limited pokeballs between battles, and you encounter the enemy whos been forehadowed as the final boss, with a tyranitar as their catchable pokemon ( a friendly remkmder that nearly every battle in the gauntle also contains a shadow pokemon to catch), which youll no doubt use your one master ball on first time though
Only for twist, the phenac city mayoy was the true villain all along, sporting a slacking and skill swap slowking as their leads, a combo SO BROKEN, its the reason skill swap has been banned in competitive battling to this day.
I was watching an Onion Sketch and heard the announcer use the term "Time Vampires" which is the perfect thing to describe these kinds of bosses
I love you joshscorcher!
there are 2 boss fights, that I have never been able to beat
and just gave up on how difficult / unfair they are
-Jevil (Deltarune), I know that he's a super boss, but Spamton at least gave me moments where he did nothing (I was able to beat him first time, with only Susie with a teensy bit of health left)
-Becky (Nefarious), the control sceme is super annoying + it having 3 phrases, no clue on what to do in each phase and being send back to phase 1 if you lose in the other 2
Jevil is insanely tuned, yeah. It took me quite a while to beat him, and that was also with the help of having a list of the effects that can happen on the side. He's...doable, but I agree Spampton was a lot easier.
Good grief, these are more savage than anything I’ve ever played…
Unfair bosses are just ones that you can't believe how they exist and how frustrating they can be without being a fun challenge. Basically, bosses like this can only be won by pure luck instead of gradually being skilled.
A new video to add to the binge watch of top 10 vids, wooo!!
EVERY BOSS IN SNK THERE A REASON WHY SNK BOSS SYNDROME IS A THING!
Predictabo!
Genocide Cutter!
Koku Desu Ka!
These words have traumatized players.
As soon as the SIF footage started, I knew what number 1 was gonna be.
I love the concept of the final boss of Drakengard 3.
The South Park fractured but whole Mitch Conners bosses should be here because it’s literally cartman cheating their game.
Couple other things about the blazing black dragon. The dragon element applies to the DPS check throughout the entire fight so if you can’t reliably break the horn focus on weapons with that instead. Dual blades are the most effective weapon against him because they profit from elemental damage the most.
13:10 not the true ending. The princess quest ending is the real one
Let's talk about Zelda II.

Dishonorable mention!
Son of the Beach - CrossCode (A New Home)
Effectively the only Super-Boss of the game.
It may be the only Super-Boss of CrossCode, but by God, does it ever suck.
special mention to Commantis from KHDDD, specifically in a level 1 critical run(w/ ng+ Dream eaters which're required),
both the light cycle and actual boss fight.
the light cycle's painful cuz Riku can only take 3 hits from it before dyin. the back attack it does is nigh unavoidable even if you attempt swerve out of the way, which is how it can be avoided, but most of the time Riku gets hit.
the pain of doin the cycle section over is not that bad, but it is bad considerin no save til after that section, or you leave and save somewhere else.
the actual boss fight's even worse cuz depending on riku's commands,
he could send himself into to the flow motion rail which is a death sentence
since he can't activate a normal command during flow motion til after he lands again
Slow is Commantis's weakness, but that is actually helping it more than its helping you even though its the best way to beat it.
cuz its Sleep Bomb becomes a multi-bombardment attack while slowed, which is bad as it insta-reduces Riku's hp to 1.
its even worse considering after getting hit, esp in air,
there's a 1-1.5 sec delay before you can select a command like cura/curaga,
so its disc throw attack can and will Clip and Kill riku before he can even heal after its sleep bomb hits
HDR version was nerfed, the beast eye spam doesn't occur anymore.
Very happy to know I've beaten several of these with little issue. Course that was years ago, so who knows if I still have the skills.
The moment I heard the golden rule for this list, I immediately thought of King Coco Wyvern. So cathartic to see it on the list. That fight broke me.
