As a white kid and teen growing up in the Mississippi delta, Aretha was a goddess for me. She may have been from Detroit but her music spoke to the delta obviously.

She did remake it. "Still Waters Run Deep" and other gospel lines are not in the Paul Simon original version. Get this: Navy Pier in Chicago, early 70s (?), after wonderful concert with her band, Aretha came out alone for her encore, sat at the piano and sang this. Summer night on the lake.

The Queen of Soul was a musical genius, a record breaking history maker, an icon.
This particular cover which won 5 Grammys in '71 (one of my favorite anthems by her growing up that won Song of The Year) is just one of the many jaw-dropping, incomparable covers that she has mastered and owned since the early '60s. Check out her version (Arista) of The Temptations' '60s hit, "I Wish It Would Rain". Fire!
Listening to Lady Soul, be it her Columbia Records, Atlantic Records, or Arista Records years, is like attending school with your ears and soul being satisfied and shook. There will never be another Aretha Franklin
